As an ESL teacher, I use this book every year. The pictures are just amazing (I'd like to see the real clay pieces) and the poem appeals to young children. There is enough new vocabulary to make it a worthwhile educational endeavor and yet the predictability helps the students to quickly memorize the poem. Years later, they often ask me to read it to them again.

Beautifully Illustrated!.......2005-10-17

My child is now a teenager. I'd lent her original copy of The New Baby Calf to someone, and realized I was saddened by not having a copy of this lovely book in the house any more, so I bought this partly for old time's sake, and partly because Barbara Reid's illustrations are so rich and cleverly detailed, it's a pleasure just to sit and look at them from time to time. What she's done with clay is like nothing I've ever seen. The text is also sweet. Her work is much enjoyed by adults and children. Also check out the Zoe books, Subway Mouse, and others.

I've been reading this book since I was young and still immensely enjoy it, mostly because of the illustations. Edith Chase uses a different kind of medium for the pictures...clay! The blended colors and textures are eye-catching and witty...very appropiate for children of all ages.

The text is actually a rhyme written by a different author before the whole book came together. I'm pretty sure Edith Chase rewrote it, though. The rhythm of the words make them fun play for your voice.

The Storming Media report number is A162724. The abstract provided by the Pentagon follows: On the modern battlefield, successful and fast communications is a critical issue. So the need for transmitting information in larger amounts through a military high-speed network increases. Thus the military is seeking viable and effective solutions that may fulfill these requirements in an operational environment. This thesis develops a prototype system based on appropriate low-cost software and hardware solutions. This system is able to detect, analyze and process wireless 802.11g signals. The evaluation of the newly designed system proved that it is effective up to distances of about 400 m with a low packet error rate and could be a useful tool for detecting wireless 802.11g networks. After evaluating the system, it was used for capturing wireless signals so that we would determine the effective transmission range and the data throughput of an 802.11g network. We determined that such a wireless network could be used in military operations because it offers high data rates up to 200 m, while it maintains a connection of the wireless clients for distances up to 400 m. In addition, the performance data collected can be used as guidelines for estimating the expected performance in an operational situation and can provide useful information for successful planning.

Description:
The principal aim of the present study was to clarify how stop-signal modality affected the speed and efficacy of stopping, using ERP components as converging measures of stop processes. Both performance and ERP latency findings suggested faster processing of stop signals in the auditory than visual version of the stop task. The effects of successful versus unsuccessful stopping on the amplitude and topography of N2/P3 components elicited by the stop signals appeared to be largely independent of the modality of the stop signals. Stop signals elicited a fronto-central N2 that was much larger on unsuccessful than successful stop trials in stimulus-locked waveforms. N2 was followed by a P3 component that showed a fronto-central distribution on successful stop trials. P3 elicited on unsuccessful stop trials showed a posterior-parietal focus, but this topography was manifested more clearly in response-locked than stimulus-locked waveforms. A dipole source analyses confirmed these topographical differences of P3, and further showed that the location of the corresponding dipoles remained largely identical across the visual and auditory versions of the stop-signal task. Taken together, the present findings support the suggestion that ERP components in the stop task reflect endogenous aspects of stop-signal processing, such as effective inhibition of responses on successful stop trials and detection of errors on failed inhibition trials.

The Loom of God takes an entertaining, indeed playful, look at numbers and mathematical patterns and the mystical properties that have often been ascribed to them. Clifford Pickover takes you on a romp through numerological history, introducing both its characters (such as the great mathematician Pythagoras) and its concepts: triangle numbers, "perfect" numbers, Fibonnaci numbers, and more. Pickover describes how ancient--and sometimes no-so-ancient--cultures and religions interpreted the significance of various numbers; he examines the geometry of Stonehenge and considers the probability of earth's annihilation by collision with an asteroid. While many authors could chronicle the history of mathematics and its relationship with mysticism and religion, few could do it with the verve and flair that Pickover manages.

Rarely can you find a mathematical theme devloped in such a complete and beautiful way. The photographic content alone is priceless yet one goes into the story and inmediatly you start calculating. This is a book for all ages and a true collectors item.

The Loom of God is a rich source for bored programmers.......1998-08-11

If you've gotten bored of hunting the wumpus, check out The Loom of God. It covers vast mathematical areas, many of which make excellent computer programs. One intriguing concept presented was that of "sociable numbers." That is, numbers A, B, C, D, E (or more) for which the factors of A add up to B, the factors of B add up to C, and so one, until the factors of E add up to A. As you might imagine, the search for sociable numbers requires either VERY powerful computers, or VERY innovative algorithms... none of which are discussed in the book. It does however, provide an excellent introduction this and many other mathematical topics.

Entertaining bored programmers is not, of course, the primary focus of the book, but it alone makes the book worth buying.

Math made fun, non-fiction and fiction in one.......1998-06-21

The author has done a wonderful job in taking math and making it interesting. By weaving non-fiction and fiction into one coherent story, Pickover has been able to take math and give it a life of its own. Certainly a good addition to any mathematicians library, but an even better addition to everybody's library because everybody can understand it!
