Book Description

In post-colonial countries such as Guyana, the legacy of colonialism and its influence on policing and society is of crucial significance in developing an explanation for police violence and police-caused homicide. Mars applies a contextual approach, grounded in the conflict theoretical perspective, to explain and understand variations in police violence over time, and she extends her study to include the social, political, and legal structure in which such actions are embedded. Her findings support the notion that police violence is a function of decades of coercive state rule under British colonialism, as well as the state's legitimization of violence in police work. In this first study on police violence and homicide in Guyana, Mars presents and analyzes data covering a 14-year period. She also provides comparative and descriptive information on the use of excessive and deadly force by the police, and, in addition, discusses laws relating to such incidents. Mars finds little support for the community violence hypothesis in reference to Guyana and concludes instead that the level of violence in the community and the everyday dangers of police work does not significantly influence the rates of police-caused homicide in that country.

"Number Theory in Science and Communication" is a well-known introduction for non-mathematicians to this fascinating and useful branch of applied mathematics . It stresses intuitive understanding rather than abstract theory and highlights important concepts such as continued fractions, the golden ratio, quadratic residues and Chinese remainders, trapdoor functions, pseudoprimes and primitive elements. Their applications to problems in the real world are one of the main themes of the book. This revised fourth edition is augmented by recent advances in primes in progressions, twin primes, prime triplets, prime quadruplets and quintruplets, factoring with elliptic curves, quantum factoring, Golomb rulers and "baroque" integers.

[A review of the 4th Edition 2006.]

It is possible when teaching number theory to drown the reader in theorems, lemmas and corrolaries. So much so that she can get lost in the thickets and fail to appreciate the broad motivating ideas. Schroeder refrains from such a presentation. He is certainly rigorous enough, when needed. But the book is a graceful exposition. Explaining key concepts and proving enough along the way to satisfy most readers.

So Euler, Fermat, Gauss and other luminaries make their appearance at numerous points. Along with the classic and still unproven Goldbach Conjecture. Many readers will probably turn to the sections on modern applications, notably in cryptography. The explanation of the public key algorithm is elegant.

Other applications include making random numbers. Something quite subtle and difficult to do well. And vitally necessary for cryptography.

The last chapter on fractals and self similar transformations is accompanied by a few pretty pictures of fractals and Julia sets in the plane. Though by now most readers must be familiar with fractal art.

The only drawback of the book is the lack of problems. Pity, as it reduces the book's suitability as an undergrad text.

Number theory for cryptoheads.......1999-02-19

This is a great book for helping would-be cryptographers to convince other would-be cryptographers that they understand the number theory behind some of today's popular crypto algorithms. While not primarily a cryptography book, it does cover residues, Galois fields, primitive roots, indexes, and the Chinese Remainder Theorem. The book seems to expect the reader to have some minimal exposure to calculus, liner algebra, and statistics, as well as some modern physics. I highly recommend this book! Don't think, just buy it.

This book deals with 2-spinors in general relativity, beginning by developing spinors in a geometrical way rather than using representation theory, which can be a little abstract. This gives the reader greater physical intuition into the way in which spinors behave. The book concentrates on the algebra and calculus of spinors connected with curved space-time. Many of the well-known tensor fields in general relativity are shown to have spinor counterparts. An analysis of the Lanczos spinor concludes the book, and some of the techniques so far encountered are applied to this. Exercises play an important role throughout and are given at the end of each chapter.

A strange and enigmatic book..........2006-04-15

A friend gave me this book a couple of years ago and I find that I return to it again and again. It is a series of 365 short meditations on being in relationship with God. The meditations can be, at times, astoundingly difficult to understand. But every now and then one pops out that is so perfect I am convinced that this crazy Spanish mystic must have been on to something.

If you are trying to deepen your relationship with the Divine, do yourself a favor: Get this book.
