In the last two decades, our knowledge on regulatory peptides and their cognate receptors, most of which are members of the seven transmembrane receptor families, has increased enormously. Regulatory peptides are small proteins which, besides their hormonal functions in regulating cellular metabolism in various tissues, may also act as neurotransmitters, and thus they often carry the prefix "neuro". Many of the cognate receptors involved in transducing the peptidergic signal across the cell membrane via a family of G proteins exist in multiple forms, the number of which frequently exceeds that of the corresponding peptide ligands. In this book, various peptide-receptor systems are discussed, e.g. CRF, somatostatin, TRH, opioid peptides, vasopressin, and oxytocin. Sedimentary geology as an integrated discipline..........2002-10-18

I think Leeder's textbook will appeal to anyone who's striving to learn more about sedimentology and dynamic stratigraphy. It's a concise, yet thorough introduction to many topics selected within the vast, ever-expanding (and worryingly so! ) field of sedimentary geology... The author's main goal was probably to provide readers with a clear sense of how well integrated sedimentary geology now is with many other branches of earth and life sciences, physics and chemistry. And in my opinion that aim is succesfully achieved. The book will be suitable read to all those who have already taken an introductory, comprehensive course in sedimentology, on the look for something else to be inspired in their reflections. Reading through many of the chapters, newcomers will learn how sedimentology gained many precious contributions from other sciences, as well as just how much of a contribution the discipline itself can be to the whole bandwagon of geology. It takes a holistic approach to Earth system science to highlight this, and the book hits this mark real well...
I appreciated particularly a brief, separate chapter dealing with the properties and stuctures of fine, cohesive sediments, which is a refreshing perspective on the physical and dynamical sedimentology of muds... And a longer one introducing sediment sources as resulting from the interaction of tectonics and erosional processes. What left me rather disappointed was a too cursory mention of base-level control on sedimentary successions, and its logical development into sequence stratigraphy, not as a preconceived model but as a new philosophy in tackling with the complexity of the stratigraphical record. But something had to be probably neglected or the tome would have become real cumbersome to handle physically! Also, I wonder whether Coriolis force really bears any influence upon such small-scale systems as lakes...? But this is an aside... All in all, the book is enjoyable and informative, the author's style pleasant and clear, the artwork excellent, and if you wanted to try out something alternative for mumbling on the hidden meanings of sands, muds and other slimy stuff we like so much, having a go at this book would be very much worth the price...

Not the high culture you might be looking for.......2007-02-08

The stories in this book, first published in 1855, are wonderful. All of the famous Olympian heroes and gods are here in well-told stories, written in fine prose at a level simple enough for small children. The back cover says that the book contains, "Evocative myths of Greece and Rome; Action-packed tales of the Norse gods; Original text, untouched and unabridged; First full-color illustrated edition of a timeless classic." All true.

However, what the back cover also says is that the book contains, "Specially created illustrations and maps by a world-renowned artist." Very misleading. Don't let the "world-renowned artist" phrase fool you. Treat it like the throw-away phrase, "critics rave" applied to movies in the daily newspaper.

My first issue is with the artist's drawing ability. His is on the same level as those who draw the cheap superhero cartoons on Nickoleon on Saturday morning. Not really a problem in itself, it's just disappointing that such well-crafted stories should be coupled with such bad "art."

The other, much bigger, problem is the way the people are posed and the way their features are presented. I do not object to nudity per se; I am very familiar with Greek, Roman, and Christian high art. But Giovanni Caselli's drawings are not the tastefully done nudes of antiquity. They are more like the drawings seen in men's magazines. They are not classically beautiful, not even romantically seductive. They are just cheaply sexual. There are dozens of these inappropriate drawings, spread liberally throughout the book. They will be very distracting to your child and -- if you have any culture at all -- distressing to you.

Just because something is childish does not mean it is fit for children. Unless you are looking to introduce your children to poor art and soft porn, I would recommend you skip this book. The good Christian, Jewish, Heathen, Asatru, etc., parent who wants to raise a classically educated child should get the original stories without these illustrations.

Great Book.......2001-03-20

This amazingly illustrated book(s) is so enjoyable. The read is quite fun and the pictures make it look spectacular. It keeps you interested at every piont, with the amazing stories of ancient mythologies. The Age of Fable is the best on information for world mythologies, though mainly that of Greece and Rome. Still there are stories I have never read before of the all-powerful gods of these old religions. There are three volumes altogether, and they are all very fun to read and the pictures help you imagine what things might have looked like.

The battles with British forces, the native Indian tribes, and the elements in a harsher climate took a terrible toll on men, women, and children, but with a doggedness and a steely character inherent in their culture, the brave Scots-Irish pioneers won through, initially to the Appalachian states of Virginia, Tennessee, the Carolinas, Kentucky, and Georgia, and eventually to points west and south, like Kansas, Nebraska, Missouri, Texas, and Ohio.

This book records for posterity the daring exploits of a people who tamed the frontier. It is a story that deserves retelling so that the light of democracy and freedom can shine brightly in the complex world in which we live. These were indeed a people undeterred--the Ulster-Scots who moved to America in the 18th century. Their exploits deserve our recognition.

Handle with care.......2006-01-23

This book is attractive, but it has many flaws in content and in many ways is just plain sloppy -- poorly written and poorly edited. The author has no notes, so it is very difficult to tell his sources unless they are from very well known individuals (generals, religious leaders, etc.), and when one compares the original words of these people with what Kennedy quotes them as saying, one finds that Kennedy often misquotes them. Much other information is inaccurate as well, so this book cannot be trusted by genealogists or anyone else. The book is full of statements like "Davy Crockett was elected to represent Tennessee in the White House" (no, he was elected to Congress) that show that the author either wrote too quickly or did not have anyone review his work or worse. Too bad, because the subject matter has great appeal.

A tedious and self-serving paean to the Scotch-Irish of the American frontier. Billy Kennedy has a knack for recycling his own material and presents us nothing new, he simply trots out the usual vainglorious accounts of the American frontier and a few of the more famous people of Scotch-Irish descent who lived there.

My great grandmother always told us that we were "Part Scotch-Irish, part Indian, and a little bit French," so I bought this book hoping I would learn something about this aspect of my heritage, but I didn't. For the reader who wants to learn real history and not just a parade of famous names, a book like The Great Wagon Road gives a much more honest and balanced look at the Scotch-Irish and other settlers of the Appalachian frontier. The Great Wagon Road, firmly buttressed by facts, gives real insight into the conditions and challenges faced by our ancestors. For a more detailed look at a microcosm of the frontier, a work like Carolina Cradle traces in excruciating detail the settlers of the northwestern Carolina frontier. There are any number of good solid history books treating the Appalachian frontier in general and the Scotch-Irish in particular, so skip the works of Billy Kennedy.

An excellent reading book.......2001-08-09

If you have ever wondered if your Tennessee ancestor was Scots-Irish, then this book will answer some of your questions. The book is an easy read and one I will be recommending to the relatives that want to know why ancestors left Scotland, went to Ireland and ended up in the colonies. Especially interesting for those wanting a nice-to-read book is the treatment of well known people like Daniel Boone, Sam Houston, TN Gov. Blount., and others. If you want a comprehensive treatment for further research, then this is probably not the book for you. I found Mr. Kennedy to be very entertaining while delivering excellent summaries of genealogical and historical information.

I found this book to be very informative. It provides some information genealogically and describes the historical perspective of the region. I bought both the Carolinas and the Tennessee book and found that there was repetition. Therefore, I recommend buying one book on the Scotch-Irish written by Mr. Kennedy. I preferred the Carolinas book.

Affectionate Look at the Pursuit of an Impossible Dream.......2001-04-29

Mr. Ord-Hume, an engineer himself, wrote this book after being entreated to aid with a television show on the subject of Perpetual Motion in Britain; he had already kept a file on perpetual motion machines as a curiosity he kept running into while studying the history of machines, and evidently was inspired by these two separate things to write an entire book on the subject. His book reads as more than a history of individual inventions and their creators than an engineering treatise, which puts not only the machines but the whole pursuit of perpetual motion into perspective; originally conceived as a way to simply save work, then as the holy grail of early engineering, and finally as a way for con men to bilk investors out of their money, the author catalogues the efforts of very interesting and often brilliant men. He explains how the machines were supposed to work, why they won't, and even occasionally gets inside the head of the inventors. He never makes fun of them however, and even credits them with inadvertantly furthering science and physics by building ever-more complex machines that won't work due to various physical principles that are discovered. Many brilliant men who could have been famous contributors to science wasted their lives and fortunes (and occasionally their sanity) pursuing the idea of free energy, no to avail. There was one exception...a clockmaker named Cox who built a perpetual clock powered by a barometer. But is it true perpetual motion? You decide.

My only quibble with the book is that his qauint style of writing does become more than a bit convoluted at times in trying to make his point, and that he does not go into enough detail at times explaining why a machine does not work, apparently assuming (and probably correctly) that the reader will not be able to follow the physics involved. However, the book is very entertaining and thought-provoking to anyone interested in mechanics. Some of the concepts are truly brilliant, especially considering how long ago they were conceived; except for the annoying fact that they wouldn't work. No matter how big a skeptic, the reader will probably find himself (or herself) doodling their very own machine on a piece of paper...and convincing themselves it could work. An esoteric and highly entertaining work for mechanics enthusiasts.
