its been years since i read this book & i just wondered tonight if it was still in print.

like the previous reviewer, i also felt the book to be an easy read with valuable insights from a very successful man.

as i recall, he was the first executive to hit the one million dollar a year salary.

some might say his advice tends to be simplistic. and it is which is why its such a good book. the advice is REAL and isn't the trendy trash that authors hawk today simply to make a buck.

for example, he reminds the reader that your mistakes in life are worth their weight in gold. the bigger the mistake, the MORE valuable it is ! ( " so long as you survive it." ) the meaning of course: don't be discouraged in life. we all make mistakes. LEARN from your mistakes to be a more successful person.

he stresses honesty and points out that the safest route through life is " well within the line. not on the line and certainly not over the line." in other words, don't be an enron ceo. value your honesty in life & your honesty will take care of you more than dishonest gain will take care of you.

this last concept has served me well. never having had a good upbringing and coming from a fractured family life with an ex-con father, i followed the author's advice. and he was right. i've been considered a bore by many. i've been laughed at. other people have thought themselves superior to me in their life skills. but, well, guess who came from a poor lad without even enough food in the kitchen to a net worth of nearly a million bucks... with good health ... and eating top of the line food... and taking cruises to tahiti, etc.? yep. honesty works just as he said it would. ( oh, and those other people who thought they were smarter than me? well, lesse. prison. drug addicted. dead. ).

the book is simple to read. nearly too easy. but for a person who needs help for lack of family or close friends, its a winner. then you graduate to the next level: proverbs.

This a readable book by a very successful man, who shares the basis of his success (and of others he's worked with, including Norton Simon). He is a noncomformist in a business suit, who has questioned orthodoxy and the status quo, to the benefit of his bank account. I'm surprised it is out of print, because it deserves to be the business classic that the lesser (but still valuable) WHAT THEY DON'T TEACH YOU AT HARVARD BUSINESS SCHOOL is.

A Good Reference Piece.......2004-03-08

This book has a somewhat too academic feel. Meant more as a history book than a treatise on HY bonds - it does provide an excellent backdrop for future thought processes and how the current market's recent tightening fits with empirical analysis.
I recommend this book for any junk trader or bond manager with manadates for HY as a must-read for added perspective BUt do not expect to be over-whelmed by insights into CDOs, CSOs, or trading strategies in the current markets.

In the Republic of Benin, aquatic ecosystems are subject to poisoning risks due to the inappropriate use of pesticides, such as washing of empty bottles in rivers and using pesticides to catch fish. In some areas, cotton fields are located near riverbanks, increasing the probability of pesticide emission to the river. To assess contamination levels in the Oueme River catchment area, different fish species were collected from different geographical areas along the river. DDT, its metabolites and isomers were the most frequently identified pesticides in fish flesh, @a-endosulfan, @b-endosulfan, dieldrin, telodrin, lindane and octachlorostyrene were also detected. Concentrations of pesticide residues in fish ranged from 0 to 1364ng/g lipid. A preliminary risk assessment indicated that the daily intake of chlorinated pesticides by people consuming fish from the Oueme River still is rather low and does not present an immediate risk.

The levels and distribution patterns of the selected organochlorine pesticides (OCPs=p,p'-DDT, o,p'-DDT, p,p'-DDE, p,p'-DDD, @a-, @b-, @c- and @d-HCH) in surficial sediments from the Haihe River and Dagu Drainage River of Tianjin were investigated by means of gas chromatography coupled with micro-electronic capture detector (GC-@mECD). Concentrations of OCPs in the sediments from the Haihe River ranged from 1.88 to 18.76ngg^-^1 (mean 7.33ngg^-^1) for @?HCH, 0.32-80.18ngg^-^1 (mean 15.94ngg^-^1) for @?DDT. Compared with the Haihe River, the Dagu Drainage River was much more contaminated by HCHs and DDTs, wherein @?HCH ranged from 33.24 to 141.03ngg^-^1 (mean 87.74ngg^-^1) and @?DDT ranged from 3.60 to 83.49ngg^-^1 with a mean value of 35.52ngg^-^1. The concentration distribution of @?DDT and @?HCH was different indicated their different contamination sources. Composition analyses indicated that a recent usage or discharge of HCH and DDT into the Dagu Drainage River.

Crystal structure analysis from powder diffraction data has attracted considerable and ever growing interest in the last decades. X-ray powder diffraction is best known for phase analysis (Hanawalt files) dating back to the 30s. In the late 60s the inherent potential of powder diffraction for crystallographic problems was realized and scientists developed methods for using powder diffraction data at first only for the refinement of crystal structures. With the development of ever growing computer power profile fitting and pattern decomposition allowed to extract individual intensities from overlapping diffraction peaks opening the way to many other applications, especially to ab initio structure determination. Powder diffraction today is used in X-ray and neutron diffraction, where it is a powerful method in neutron diffraction for the determination of magnetic structures. In the last decade the interest has dramatically improved. There is hardly any field of crystallography where the Rietveld, or full pattern method has not been tried with quantitative phase analysis the most important recent application.

Statistics in Language Research gives a non-technical but more or less complete treatment of Analysis of Variance (ANOVA) for language researchers. ANOVA is the most frequently used technique when handling the outcomes of research designs with more than two treatments or groups. This technique is used in all parts of linguistics which deal with observations obtained in survey studies and in (quasi-)experimental research, like applied linguistics, psycholinguistics, sociolinguistics, language and speech pathology and phonetics. Most statistical textbooks in the social sciences take examples typical of their own field and, in addition, omit subjects which are particularly relevant for language researchers, like power analysis, quasi F, F1, F2 and minF'. This book offers a thorough introduction to the basic principles of analysis of variance, based on examples taken from language research, and goes beyond the conventional topics treated in introductory textbooks, as it covers topics like 'violations of assumptions', 'missing data', 'problems in repeated measures designs', 'alternatives to analysis of variance' (such as randomization tests and multilevel analysis). Each chapter consists of four sections: treatment of the subject under discussion, a summary of relevant terms and concepts, a section devoted to reporting statistics, and finally an exercise section. After the first introductory chapter, in which fundamental concepts like 'variables', 'cases' and SPSS data formats are presented, the book continues with two 'refreshment' chapters, in which the principles of statistical testing are revised, focusing on the well-known t test. These chapters also deal with the essential, but often neglected concepts of 'statistical power' and 'sample size'. In every chapter examples of SPSS input and output are given.

A COMPACT OVERVIEW OF THE RIETVELD METHOD.......1999-03-10

Professor Young's must be congratulated for having made a great effort in putting together an up-to-date book on the Rietveld Method. The books gives a rather comprehensive overview of the underlying principles of this very important technique of powder diffraction. It may be quite useful for the uninitiated scientist in this exciting field. Hence, the book should be considered an 101 level course in Rietveld Analysis. Although, each chapter is rigorously written and all the chapter arranged in a systematic fashion, the book simply lacks "case studies" in the step by step application of the technique. Therefore, only a 3 star rating given. Most of the "newcomer" suffer from the lack of guides on how to perform Rietveld refinements and resources in this area is extremely scarce. To sum up, those who wish to have an idea on what the Rietveld method is all about and what it can do for you, this book would most certainly be a valuable reference (especially references cited therein would come in very handy!).

The Rietveld method allows the quantification of crystalline phases and amorphous material identified by X-ray powder diffraction (XRPD) and other diffraction methods. The method assists in determining the speciation of contaminants in solid matrices both qualitatively and quantitatively in a statistically defensible approach, as it does not focus on a microscale. Rietveld was applied to chromite ore processing residue (COPR), a cementitious waste containing hexavalent chromium. Calcium aluminum chromium oxide hydrates (CACs) were the crystalline phases identified by XRPD that bind Cr^6^+ in COPR according to their chemical formula. Rietveld quantification, combined with mass balances on Cr^6^+, showed that CACs may bind Cr^6^+ in variable percentages, ranging from 25% to 85%. Analysis of duplicate samples showed that material variability is the predominant factor of uncertainty in evaluating the role of CACs in Cr^6^+ speciation, provided that a consistent quantification strategy is pursued. The choice of strategy was performed on the basis of the pertinent literature, preliminary analyses of the equipment and the software settings, and mass balances. The correlation between the average CAC-bound Cr^6^+ concentration and the total Cr^6^+ for five samples (R^2=0.94), extracted from different zones and soil borings, suggests that CACs are a primary sink for Cr^6^+ in COPR.
