Great book, especially for new managers!.......2005-03-20

If you own or manage a business, your employees should be your biggest asset. If they're not, it's more than certain that you have a problem. Dignity and Justice for All is ideal for those beginning their careers in business, and especially for first-time managers.

I'm always appreciative when a book's subtitle provides valuable insight into it. The subtitle of Dignity and Justice for All is no exception, because the subtitle is A Blueprint To A Positive Work Environment. Filled with numerous examples from her years in the business environment, Camille Cances has given some remarkable illustrations, both of what works and, perhaps equally important, what does not work. I especially enjoyed the chapters entitled "The Four C's" (which are communication, compromise, control and care) and "Becoming the Leaders We Want to Be." The traits Ms. Cances lists as valuable for leaders (honesty, vision based, goal oriented, knowledgeable, asking for help, being fair, self-confident, creative, handling change, self-motivation, and follow through) are certainly benchmarks for everyone, whether or not they work in the business climate.

Having worked in the business world for a number of years, I would have benefited greatly from this book early in my career. However, now is better late than never! The chapters were short, and further divided into smaller sections, making this a good book to read on the run. There were several typographical errors in the book that detracted from the content.

Overall it is a very informative book. However, I wish it would expand on how to file adversary complaint and other more aggrssive approach from getting pay by the bankrupt Debtor if they fall under some of nondischargeable terms.

Thomas Bulfinch retells the classical myths for the masses.......2005-10-02

At the end of his Author's Preface for "Bulfinch's Greek and Roman Mythology: The Age of Fable," Thomas Bulfinch (1796-1867) quotes from Coleridge's "The Piccolomini" to represent the connection between mythology and literature. An accountant at the Boston Merchants' Bank, Bulfinch had been educated at Harvard and was a teacher early in his career. Seeing a need for something more than a formal translation of the myths and legends of antiquity, Bulfinch decided to popularize classical literature for all of us who did not know how to read Ancient Greek and Latin. Throughout his business career he collected hundreds of myths and legends, not only of the pagan era of Greek and Roman gods, but also Oriental deities, and Norse sagas. "The Age of Fable" was first published in 1855, and created the identification of the name of Bulfinch with that of mythology for the general population. For the last half of the 19th-century and the first part of the 20th, the volume was as much an American classic as "The Last of the Mohicans," "Uncle Tom's Cabin," "Uncle Remus," "Tom Sawyer," and "Huckleberry Finn."

When Bulfinch told these ancient tales the archeological study of Greece had not really begun (Troy was still considered a mythical location) and historians had yet to formulate any acceptable explanations for how these myths originated. Bulfinch was interested in telling these stories simply and for their own sakes, without being caught up in the Dead Language issues of the poems he excerpts (except to the extent that he uses the Latin versions of the names of the gods and goddesses rather than the Greek). Nor was he interested in drawing moral lessons from these stories, because Bulfinch's goal was to make the classical references found in the educated poets of his day accessible to the common folk.

The opening chapters deal mostly with the gods and goddesses, starting with the tales of Prometheus and Pandora, and ending with the "Monsters" such as the Sphinx and Pegasus. The next section is devoted to the great heroes, from Jason and Atalanta, to Hercules and Theseus, and then the lesser heroes such as Orpheus and orion. We then get to the epic poems of antiquity with chapters on the Trojan war, the adventures of Ulysses, and the adventures of Aeneas. The final section of "The Age of Fable" covers a lot of ground, including Egyptian deities, the Oracles, Poets of Mythology, Eastern Mythology, Hindu Mythology, and Norse Mythology, including Beowulf. I was weaned on Edith Hamilton's "Mythology," but I still appreciate Bulfinch's approach in telling pretty much the same stories in a more straightforward manner. More importantly, these stories have really become literature in their own right, and can be read for that enjoyment rather than for scholarly knowledge. This edition has the additional virtue of being illustrated by some of the world's greatest paintings, which is perfect because mythology has been the subject of so many great works of art from "The Birth of Venus" on down the list.

Not the high culture you might be looking for.......2007-02-08

The stories in this book, first published in 1855, are wonderful. All of the famous Olympian heroes and gods are here in well-told stories, written in fine prose at a level simple enough for small children. The back cover says that the book contains, "Evocative myths of Greece and Rome; Action-packed tales of the Norse gods; Original text, untouched and unabridged; First full-color illustrated edition of a timeless classic." All true.

However, what the back cover also says is that the book contains, "Specially created illustrations and maps by a world-renowned artist." Very misleading. Don't let the "world-renowned artist" phrase fool you. Treat it like the throw-away phrase, "critics rave" applied to movies in the daily newspaper.

My first issue is with the artist's drawing ability. His is on the same level as those who draw the cheap superhero cartoons on Nickoleon on Saturday morning. Not really a problem in itself, it's just disappointing that such well-crafted stories should be coupled with such bad "art."

The other, much bigger, problem is the way the people are posed and the way their features are presented. I do not object to nudity per se; I am very familiar with Greek, Roman, and Christian high art. But Giovanni Caselli's drawings are not the tastefully done nudes of antiquity. They are more like the drawings seen in men's magazines. They are not classically beautiful, not even romantically seductive. They are just cheaply sexual. There are dozens of these inappropriate drawings, spread liberally throughout the book. They will be very distracting to your child and -- if you have any culture at all -- distressing to you.

Just because something is childish does not mean it is fit for children. Unless you are looking to introduce your children to poor art and soft porn, I would recommend you skip this book. The good Christian, Jewish, Heathen, Asatru, etc., parent who wants to raise a classically educated child should get the original stories without these illustrations.

Great Book.......2001-03-20

This amazingly illustrated book(s) is so enjoyable. The read is quite fun and the pictures make it look spectacular. It keeps you interested at every piont, with the amazing stories of ancient mythologies. The Age of Fable is the best on information for world mythologies, though mainly that of Greece and Rome. Still there are stories I have never read before of the all-powerful gods of these old religions. There are three volumes altogether, and they are all very fun to read and the pictures help you imagine what things might have looked like.

I personally find mythology pretty fascinating. On some levels it is an attempt to explain the human psyche. On others, it is an attempt to answer "why." This text is inferior to no other in its stories of myth and legend. With a twist, the author explains many of the verses and dialogue in many of the classic dramas and writings of some of the world's most famous author's throughout the centuries.
