The Future Of State-owned Financial Institutions (World Bank/IMF/Brookings Emerging Market)
Manufacturer: Brookings Institution Press ProductGroup: Book Binding: Paperback ASIN: 0815713355 |
Book Description
Research suggests that if the majority of a country's financial institutions are owned by the state, that country will experience slower financial development, less efficient financial systems, less private sector credit, and slower GDP growth. Yet more than 40 percent of the world's population live in countries in which public sector institutions dominate the banking system. In this volume, noted experts discuss the challenges presented by state-owned financial institutions and offer cross-disciplinary solutions for policymakers and banking regulators. Included are case studies exploring varying methods of privatization, such as initial public offerings, employee stock ownership plans, and strategic investors. The Future of State-Owned Financial Institutions is a product of the sixth annual Financial Markets and Development conference organized by the World Bank, the International Monetary Fund, and the Brookings Institution.

Testimony and Advocacy in Victorian Law, Literature, and Theology (Cambridge Studies in Nineteenth-Century Literature and Culture)
Jan-Melissa Schramm Manufacturer: Cambridge University Press ProductGroup: Book Binding: Paperback ASIN: 0521026350 |
Book Description
This original and wide-ranging study shows how changing attitudes to evidence, trial and revelation in law and theology had a profound impact on literary narrative in the nineteenth century. Jan-Melissa Schramm, who is both a lawyer and a literary critic, argues that authors of fiction created a style of literary advocacy that both imitated, and reacted against, the example of their story-telling counterparts of the criminal Bar, and traces the ongoing debate over rules of evidence, eye-witness testimony and codes of ethical conduct that helped shape Victorian realism as a narrative form.Download Description
The eighteenth-century model of the criminal trial - with its insistence that the defendant and the facts of a case could 'speak for themselves' - was abandoned in 1836, when legislation enabled barristers to address the jury on behalf of prisoners charged with felony. Increasingly, professional acts of interpretation were seen as necessary to achieve a just verdict, thereby silencing the prisoner and affecting the testimony given by eye-witnesses at criminal trials. Jan-Melissa Schramm examines the profound impact of the changing nature of evidence in law and theology on literary narrative in the nineteenth century. Already a locus of theological conflict, the idea of testimony became a fiercely contested motif of Victorian debate about the ethics of literary and legal representation. She argues that authors of fiction created a style of literary advocacy which both imitated, and reacted against, the example of their story-telling counterparts at the Bar.

Exploratory Analysis of Spatial and Temporal Data: A Systematic Approach
Natalia Andrienko , and Gennady Andrienko Manufacturer: Springer ProductGroup: Book Binding: Hardcover Similar Items:
ASIN: 3540259945 |
Book Description
Exploratory data analysis (EDA) is about detecting and describing patterns, trends, and relations in data, motivated by certain purposes of investigation. As something relevant is detected in data, new questions arise, causing specific parts to be viewed in more detail. So EDA has a significant appeal: it involves hypothesis generation rather than mere hypothesis testing.
The authors describe in detail and systemize approaches, techniques, and methods for exploring spatial and temporal data in particular. They start by developing a general view of data structures and characteristics and then build on top of this a general task typology, distinguishing between elementary and synoptic tasks. This typology is then applied to the description of existing approaches and technologies, resulting not just in recommendations for choosing methods but in a set of generic procedures for data exploration.
Professionals practicing analysis will profit from tested solutions – illustrated in many examples – for reuse in the catalogue of techniques presented. Students and researchers will appreciate the detailed description and classification of exploration techniques, which are not limited to spatial data only. In addition, the general principles and approaches described will be useful for designers of new methods for EDA.

Group III Nitride Semiconductor Compounds: Physics and Applications (Series on Semiconductor Science and Technology, 6)
Manufacturer: Oxford University Press, USA ProductGroup: Book Binding: Hardcover ASIN: 0198501595 |
Book Description
This book was motivated in large part by the tremendous interest shown in nitride semiconductors by the scientific community in recent years. The interest is due to the wide range of commercially viable industrial applications such as visible and ultraviolet optoelectronics. The aim of this book is to elucidate the physics of nitride-based materials and related devices, and to provide to graduate students and young researchers a rapid introduction to this burgeoning field. Chapters of tutorial style are of medium length, and have been commissioned from some of the very best experts on each topic, both from academia and from industry. All aspects arising from the dual challenges of achieving high-quality, single crystal material and engineering optoelectronic devices are addressed. In the first chapters, the reader will learn about the nitrides in the context of other semiconductors, and will be exposed to the methods used to grow these materials. The chapters which follow discuss the materials' performance from the point of view of electronic transport, optical and structural properties. Finally, an extensive review of device applications is provided in the area of modern transistors, ultraviolet detectors and light emitters.

Book Description
In this unusual collection of stories and fables, Goncourt prize-winner Patrick Chamoiseau re-creates in truly magical language the stories he heard as a child in Martinique.Customer Reviews:
Wonderful use of langauge.......2002-04-05
Examples of the tales:
The Rainmaker is a tale of disbelief in the ability of a rainmaker - disbelief that leaves the people with misery.
Lil' Fellow the Musician is a tale of a child with magical musical abilities - whose lack of caution is his downfall.
Ti-Jean Horizon is a delightful trickster tale in which the trickster "steals" his birthright.
The Most Beautiful One Is Under the Tub is a tale where a parrot's nonsense ultimately is meaningful - in the right situation.
The stories are told in an oral style but not in a simple style. An example: "So she was famine's best friend, which proves without a doubt that a friendship is not necessarily one of life's true pleasures." But this book is pure pleasure.

Stars and Keys: Folktales and Creolization in the Indian Ocean
Lee Haring Manufacturer: Indiana University Press ProductGroup: Book Binding: Hardcover ASIN: 0253348684 |
Book Description
n Stars and Keys: Folktales and Creolization in the Southwest Indian Ocean, Lee Haring introduces readers to the rich folklore traditions of the islands of the southwest Indian Ocean. The culture of Madagascar, Mauritius, Seychelles, Réunion, and the Comoros is a unique blend of traditions that have been brought from Africa, South Asia, Europe, and the Middle East. The folktales from these islands reflect the diversity of this culture and provide a rare opportunity to observe the fluidity of traditions and the process of creolization. Haring presents the tales in a uniquely innovative style: he interrupts the text as if he were reading aloud and directly addresses the reader. His words and those of the storytellers are clearly distinguished, making this folktale collection useful to a wide range of readers and scholars.
