Incredible style guide with CDROM.......2007-05-07

I'm an instructor / developer with a large midwest insurance company. In that role, I teach writing skills to our employees. While I have many other style guides, this book by FranklinCovey is a delightful surprise. It has 440 magazine quality pages with vivid color illustrations, side bars, explanations, definitions, descriptions, and examples. If you're looking for a comprehensive style guide that you'll be happy with on your first purchase, make this book your first choice.

This is a wonderful reference book. Unfortunately, it embodies a politically correct communication philosophy that makes it worthless. Don't waste your money. There are better reference books out there and they don't promote a polical/social philosoply.

This Style Guide Has Everything!.......2003-01-07

This book tells you how to do everything! It can be used by both students and professionals. This book has everything from how to properly use a comma to writing bibliographies; from how to use photographs in presentations and documents to writing resumes. This guide gives you hints on how to manage meetings effectively. I use this book at both work and home. People come to me to borrow this fantasic book constantly. I have the CD installed on my computer and love using the program - it is very user-friendly. I don't think any student or office should be without this wonderful tool.

This original and wide-ranging study shows how changing attitudes to evidence, trial and revelation in law and theology had a profound impact on literary narrative in the nineteenth century. Jan-Melissa Schramm, who is both a lawyer and a literary critic, argues that authors of fiction created a style of literary advocacy that both imitated, and reacted against, the example of their story-telling counterparts of the criminal Bar, and traces the ongoing debate over rules of evidence, eye-witness testimony and codes of ethical conduct that helped shape Victorian realism as a narrative form.

The eighteenth-century model of the criminal trial - with its insistence that the defendant and the facts of a case could 'speak for themselves' - was abandoned in 1836, when legislation enabled barristers to address the jury on behalf of prisoners charged with felony. Increasingly, professional acts of interpretation were seen as necessary to achieve a just verdict, thereby silencing the prisoner and affecting the testimony given by eye-witnesses at criminal trials. Jan-Melissa Schramm examines the profound impact of the changing nature of evidence in law and theology on literary narrative in the nineteenth century. Already a locus of theological conflict, the idea of testimony became a fiercely contested motif of Victorian debate about the ethics of literary and legal representation. Exploratory data analysis (EDA) is about detecting and describing patterns, trends, and relations in data, motivated by certain purposes of investigation. As something relevant is detected in data, new questions arise, causing specific parts to be viewed in more detail. So EDA has a significant appeal: it involves hypothesis generation rather than mere hypothesis testing.

The authors describe in detail and systemize approaches, techniques, and methods for exploring spatial and temporal data in particular. They start by developing a general view of data structures and characteristics and then build on top of this a general task typology, distinguishing between elementary and synoptic tasks. This typology is then applied to the description of existing approaches and technologies, resulting not just in recommendations for choosing methods but in a set of generic procedures for data exploration.

Professionals practicing analysis will profit from tested solutions – illustrated in many examples – for reuse in the catalogue of techniques presented. Students and researchers will appreciate the detailed description and classification of exploration techniques, which are not limited to spatial data only. In addition, the general principles and approaches described will be useful for designers of new methods for EDA.

Andrienkos' take a functional view of data and based on two components of data build a functional taxonomy of data analysis tasks. The authors have done a excellent job and provided lot of examples to support their arguments. The book is worth buying. Though I don't own one (My advisor is very generous to lend his copy), I definitely would like to buy one.

Wonderful use of langauge.......2002-04-05

Folktale books are frequently viewed as "children's" books or books of interest only to the specialist. This book is of interest to anyone who enjoys good stories and Chamoiseau's use of language.

Examples of the tales:
The Rainmaker is a tale of disbelief in the ability of a rainmaker - disbelief that leaves the people with misery.

Lil' Fellow the Musician is a tale of a child with magical musical abilities - whose lack of caution is his downfall.

Ti-Jean Horizon is a delightful trickster tale in which the trickster "steals" his birthright.

The Most Beautiful One Is Under the Tub is a tale where a parrot's nonsense ultimately is meaningful - in the right situation.

The stories are told in an oral style but not in a simple style. An example: "So she was famine's best friend, which proves without a doubt that a friendship is not necessarily one of life's true pleasures." But this book is pure pleasure.

Creole Folktales is fantastic! His use of language creates an atmosphere that is alive with beautiful images. The underlying meanings of each story (12) are so powerful. When you read it you won't be able to put it down and when you're finished you'll never forget them!

Creole Folktales is awesome! The tales are full of vision and magical twists leading the reader to understand the Creole folklore tradition. Patrick Chamoiseau's stories are timeless, almost like each word was dusted with magic--you'll hang on each Folktale wanting more inspiration and laughter. Warning: After reading this book, you'll want to fly to Martinique and experience that country--or--like me, read more of Patrick Chamoisseau's books.
