Book Description
The best strategies for investing in the utilities industry
With the deregulation of the utility industry, the entire landscape of the power economy has greatly changed. This has had a dramatic impact on consumers, corporations, and especially investors. The only book focused on investing within the energy, communications, and water industries, Power Hungry offers a comprehensive look at the considerable opportunities arising from these industries. Along with providing one-of-a-kind investment strategies for investing in utilities and other essential services, Power Hungry provides a framework for readers to construct their own model portfolio of stocks, commission-free, so they can reap the rewards of a field with enormous profit potential. Established companies may no longer hold the lion's share of the marketplace, but this book corners the market on investing in these profitable industries.
Customer Reviews:
Good for a General Business and Historical Perspective, Bad for Investment Purposes.......2006-07-04
Those of you looking to invest in the energy, (electric) utility or other critical service areas would do well to heed this advice: all of these industries deal in commodities, and all of them require participation in financial markets (large capital spending requirements and active involvent with derivatives to manage delivery of the commodity at various points in time), so it behooves you to look very closely at the management and the debt levels of these outfits. Read this book to obtain a good, general business perspective, and more important, a historical perspective of these industries, but also read a book like Buffettology by Mary Buffett and David Clark so as to avoid making some very big mistakes.
I say this because the author tries to sell the reader on the growth potential in energy, telecommunications and water, especially in developing countries (without, at the same time, disclosing that the median, and not the average, incomes in many of these nations generally precludes the vast majority of these inhabitants from ever having access to these essential services). The author also tries to sell the reader and potential investor on the merits of size and diversification (from the standpoint of generating capacity within a firm and from participation in activities spanning two or more regions or countries), but the author does not disclose the risks associated size or diversification as they relate to the energy and natural resources businesses in particular. The reader/potential investor should note that Calpine Corp. had size going for it, but is now in Chapter 11, and who can forget Enron, which was heavily diversified and a global heavy-hitter, but now is the nation's most spectacular bankruptcy. You could argue that Calpine failed because of its near total exposure to California, and you could also argue that Enron failed because of its fraudulent accounting practices, but one thing is certain: at the level of play for these companies(which runs into the hundreds of billions easily), even a small mis-step can lead to disaster.
Warren Buffett has publicly referred to derivative instruments as 'financial weapons of mass destruction'. The use of derivatives in these industries has received absolutely no treatment in this book. The next great financial catastrophe is highly likely to involve derivatives and a critical service, so potential investors would do very well to scrutinize this aspect of any crtical services purchase.
In sum, this book did a very good job of making clear how the energy, telecom and water services got to be the way they are, and gave an accurate snapshot of the key factors at work in each industry. However, the information in this text represents about one third of the information you need to know in order to invest successfully in any critical service. Written in 2002, because of the turbulent nature of the critical services industries, the contents are already dated for the most part, and are only of use from a historical standpoint. In the future, the author would do well to write an update to this book which would explore the ever more complex regulatory and financial landscape, and also include some coverage on the waste disposal industry, another critical service that has promise as well.
Power Update.......2002-04-27
A good, well written update on the power industry. Conrad is balanced, shows no bias but is obviously concerned about the future power situation. 20 years of underinvestment, in his opinion, will start taking their toll and it is up to us to rethink this and take a long, hard look at the changes taking place in the industry.
Good for the investor and a must read for the Analyst (if there are any left) on Wall Street.
Power update.......2002-04-27
A very well written, balanced and unbiased update on our power situation.
The author is not trying to "push" his viewpoint but rather attempts to show us where we are and what we should be thinking about to start us on the road to a new power infrastructure.
Highly recommended for the individual and the Wall Street Analyst.
Power-FUL insights.......2002-04-26
Essential reading for anyone interested in how to take advantage of the changing forces shaping the energy and telecom utility industries. Well-written & interesting. I'm a subscriber to Conrad's excellent newsletter, which I also recommend.
A Great Book for Consumers and Insiders.......2002-04-25
Conrad is one of the top independent analysts of the essential services industry--utilities, pipelines, telecom, etc. Here he steps back to give readers the historical context of deregulation in the power industry, how it came about, what it's implications are, and how to benefit from it.
Part investment book, part history book, part current events book, it does a great job integrating all these varied aspects into an interesting, edifying read. For anyone interested in what's going on with the most necessary services within our economy this book satifies on numerous levels.

Book Description
Since the development of the first commercially available antibiotic, penicillin, in the 1940s, the high expectations for the healing power of these "wonder drugs" has not been fulfilled. This is due to the evolution of antibiotic resistance in bacteria; a problem which has increased dramatically in recent years with the emergence of multi-resistant strains. These organisms cannot be treated by currently available antibiotics. The numerous warnings of the World Health Organization emphasize the relevance and importance of this serious global health problem and the pressing need to develop new classes of antibiotics with novel mechanisms of action. This book presents an overview of the current research in this area and provides for the first time a coherent picture of the emerging strategies for the development of novel antimicrobial compounds. Leading international researchers from academia and industry have contributed to this uniques collection of highly acclaimed reviews covering every aspect of this important topic. The book is organized into three sections: Section 1 focuses on the origin and evolution of antimicrobial resistance, as well as on strategies for its containment. A more sophisticated and prudent use of antibiotics is advocated. Section 2 is devoted to the field of microbial genomics and finding new targets. Section 3 covers the development of novel peptide antibiotics based on host defense peptides. The interests of scientists of quite diverse disciplines are addressed: biophysics and biochemistry, molecular biology and genetic engineering, microbiology, medicine and pharmacology. In addition, this book is essential reading for physicians, who are confronted with antibiotic resistant bacteria in their daily work, in particular at hospitals where infections caused by multi-resistant bacteria are often prevalent.

Optimal State Estimation: Kalman, H Infinity, and Nonlinear Approaches
ASIN: 0387984852 |
Book Description
This applied mathematic text focuses on Fourier analysis, filters and signal analysis. Scientists and engineers are confronted by the necessity of using classical mathematics such as Fourier transforms, convolution, distribution and more recently wavelet analysis in all areas of modelling. The object of this book is two-fold - on the one hand to convey to the mathematical reader a rigorous presentation and exploration of the important applications of analysis leading to numerical calculations and on the other hand to convey to the physics reader a body of theory in which the well-known formulae find their justification. The reader will find the basic study of fundamental notions such as Lebesgue integration and theory of distribution and these permit the establishment of the following areas: Fourier analysis and convolution Filters and signal analysis time-frequency analysis (gabor transforms and wavelets) The book is aimed at engineers and scientists and contains a large number of exercises as well as selected worked out solutions. The words `Translated by Robert D Ryan' should be included in ALL promotion material regarding the book.
Customer Reviews:
An excellent text for Fourier Analysis.......2002-05-23
I bought this book hoping to find a self-contained, semi-rigorous introduction to Fourier Analysis and its applications, and indeed I'm very pleased with the purchase. One aspect of the book's format that I enjoyed in a self-study setting is how it is partitioned into lessons (which are in turn divided into chapters). Indeed, it seemed that each lesson took me about 60-90 minutes to absorb, which is the average time most students (including myself) devote to one lesson.
Another aspect of the book I enjoyed was the fact that, on one hand the author took the time to introduce mathematically sophisticated ideas such as Lesbesgue measure and Hilbert spaces in order to make the proofs run more smoothly, but on the other there where more practical lessons on the fast Fourier transform, filters, and even wavelet analysis (last lesson). Such a blend of theory and practice in a relatively compact text seems quite rare.
Finally, I highly recommend this book for students of all levels; but especially to graduate students in mathematics, physics, and engineering.

Edith Wharton is recognized as one of the twentieth century's most important American writers. The House of Mirth not only initiated three decades of Wharton's popular and critical acclaim, it helped move women's literature into a new place of achievement and prominence. The House of Mirth is
perhaps Wharton's best-known and most frequently read novel, and scholars and teachers consider it an essential introduction to Wharton and her work. This casebook collects critical essays addressing a broad spectrum of topics and utilizing a range of critical and theoretical approaches. It also
includes Wharton's introduction to the 1936 edition of the novel and her discussion of the composition of the novel from her autobiography.

Book Description
Written by William Blanchard Jerrold, who was an English journalist and author. He was born in London, and was the eldest son of the dramatist, Douglas William Jerrold. Abandoning the artistic career for which he had been educated, he began working on newspapers at an early age. He was appointed the Crystal Palace commissioner to Sweden in 1853, and wrote A Brage-Beaker with the Swedes on his return. In 1857 he succeeded his father as editor of Lloyd's Weekly Newspaper, a post which he held for twenty-six years. On his death, he was occupied in writing the biography of Gustave Doré, who had illustrated several of his books.

We are all familiar with America's stereotyped images of black men: criminals, sexual predators, and intellectually challenged athletes and entertainers. In Black Man Emerging, psychology professors James H. Cones III and Joseph L. White outline the evils that befall black men in modern society (drug addiction, gang violence, apathy, and limited educational and economic opportunities) and help contribute to those stereotypes. But they also detail another image of the African American male, honoring his triumph over slavery, Jim Crow, segregation, police brutality, and miseducation. While they feel that African Americans and whites can both solve America's racial problems, they write: "Black men will have to face up to their responsibility for the Black-on-Black crime and violence in the inner cities, teen pregnancies, paternal absence and family deterioration." They show how the legacy of the ancestral traditions of Africa, the survival of the Middle Passage to America, and the slave revolts created a glorious past of Afro-American male heroics that inspired leaders from Martin Luther King to Malcolm X--and can continue to inspire, along with those latter examples, today. --Eugene Holley Jr.
Book Description
In the face of centuries of institutional and interpersonal racism, in light of the signals they receive from society, and given the choices they must make about what they want from life and how to go about getting it--how can Black men in America realize their full potential? br br In i Black Man Emerging, /i psychologists Joseph L. White and James H. Cones III fashion a moving psychological and social portrait that reflects their personal views on the struggle of Black men against oppression and for self-determination. Using numerous case histories and biographical sketches of Black men who have failed and those who have prevailed, the authors describe strategies for responding to racism and entrenched power--underscoring the healing capacity of religion, family, Black consciousness movements, mentorships, educational programs, paid employment, and other positive forces. They also explore the concept of identity as it applies to being Black and male and ithe influence of Black men on American culture. br br i Black Man Emerging /i is a poignant and personal discussion of the issues facing and felt by Black men in this country and an important commentary on the conflicts born of human diversity.

Customer Reviews:
how music moves people.......2005-08-10
Rebeccasreads recommends THE SECRET OF TEACHING SCIENCE & MATH THROUGH MUSIC is a short & curious read, in need of editing & layout work, which offers compelling evidence that music & scholastic motivation are intrinsically entwined.
THE SECRET OF TEACHING SCIENCE & MATH THROUGH MUSIC delves into lives of scientists, mathematicians, engineers, physicians & educators, Dr. Frank offers insights into how music can help your children & students with their learning.
MUSICAL NOTES ON MATH by the same author is also an excellent teaching book.
Finally! How to stimulate kids to do better academically.......2005-04-09
REVIEWER: Cassandra Lynne, author of LoveSpeak: The Married Woman's Guide to Love and Romance. www.romancewiz.com
I'm convinced!! Dr. Frank's thought-provoking book, "The Secret of Teaching Math and Science through Music," provides convincing evidence that providing children with the opportunity to play a musical instrument gives them the advantage of additional stimulation necessary to do better scholastically.
Dr. Frank's extensive research substantiates her conviction that children who have studied and played musical instruments reap the benefit of learning self-discipline, cooperation, motivation, concentration and self esteem. This is good news for teachers and for parents who are searching for ways to help their children do well in school.
A solid case for the importance of music education.......2005-04-07
Madeline Frank presents a solid case for the benefits of music education for the young. She "names names" of the famous and great who played instruments and contributed important scientific developments to mankind. Frank recites a telling story of how Einstein may have conceived much of his Theory of Relativity while playing the piano. The discussion of music therapy is compelling. This book provides a fundamental argument of the importance of teaching children music appreciation.
Marta Monahan is the author of The Courage to be Brilliant: How Five Acts of Improvement a Day Will Make You Shine. For more information see www.martamonahan.com.
Music is good for the brain.......2005-04-04
If you've ever wondered about the relationship between the left and right hemispheres of the brain and how music relates to them, this book will give you a lot of great information. It gives the results of many difficult-to-do brain experiments and studies throughout the world. It also shows how MANY highly developed left-brainers found harmony:) with their right-brain through music, as well as overall good brain development.
Great way to boost your child's learning potential.......2005-04-01
What do Albert Einstein, Albert Schweitzer, and numerous medical doctors, physicists and Nobel laureates have in common? All studied a musical instrument at a young age and continued to play throughout their lives.
Madeline Frank's book not only enumerates striking examples of the music-genius connection but also investigates the relationship between music, math and science. She discusses how the study of music enhances intelligence: playing music develops and strengthens our neural pathways. Music can stimulate memory. So students who study music will score higher on tests, regardless of their socioeconomic status.
Frank, a concert violist, teacher and parent, is not suggesting that everyone who studies music will become a math whiz. What she does make an excellent case for is that studying and playing music will enhance a child's academic achievement and societal behavior. Even children who didn't enjoy their musical studies were found to have reaped important benefits from them.
This book is not for everyone, however. The writing is laden with attributions for various facts and quotations, which can make for tedious reading. But those who forge through this work will discover some real nuggets. "By putting instruments in their hands, [children] can be taught to be disciplined, cooperative, gain self-esteem, learn teamwork." And by playing in orchestra or band, "these children will become a part of something good and positive."
There are moments of true lyrical writing: "The vibrating strings of the universe are the ways that can unlock these doors." There is also a fine bibliography for additional reading.
