This book provides a review and an economic and policy assessment of the first and second rounds of designated environmentally sensitive areas (ESAs), five years after their inception. Seven chapters examine particular case studies, covering a range of agricultural ecosystems from England, Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland. Other chapters describe the background to the setting up of ESAs, how the benefits of the policy can be measured and how it compares with alternative policy options. ESA schemes are now being initiated in France and Denmark. The book addresses a topical issue and is aimed at a wide range of readers concerned with agricultural and environmental economics, policy and management.

                              Book Description

" The Work of Writing is a deeply mature piece of scholarship involving dozens upon dozens of authors from all over the long eighteenth century. Not only is its sense of the 'textual' very broad, ranging from literature, to philosophy (which, Siskin argues, once occupied the disciplinary space that Literature does today), to economics and sociology, but in requiring that we wake up and think about enlightenment processes of cultural formation, it is itself exemplary of that process. Thinking very hard and on every page, it passes its own test in an exhilarating manner." -- Stuart Curran, University of Pennsylvania

" The Work of Writing establishes Cliff Siskin as one of our most subtle and theoretically sophisticated scholars of Romantic cultural studies and the New Historicism. This book, breath-taking in its range, documents the growing professionalisation of writing in England in the eighteenth-century, as well as the ways in which both nationalist and entrepreneurial impulses worked to exclude women writers from the new category of 'professional writer' in the nineteenth century." -- Anne K. Mellor, University of California, Los Angeles

In an enterprise strikingly termed 'dedisciplinary,' Clifford Siskin's book undertakes a daring fusion of literary and social theory. Drawing with remarkable breadth on scholarship in history and in the social sciences, Prof. Siskin aims not just to understand a group of literary texts, but to rethink on a historical basis the whole concept of literature. Meticulously detailed and closely argued in its attention to a large range of major and minor writers, to questions of the public, the nation, gender, and genre, it has had an immediate impact on Romantic studies and is essential reading for any scholar wishing to know what matters in the field today." -- Marshall Brown, University of Washington

"This book has an audaciously grand sweep to it-Siskin appears to have read everything composed between the Restoration and Victorian England-and a vast conceptual territory-the emergence and interrelation of three central abstractions: discipline, profession, and literature. As with all of his previous work, this too effectively combines vast historical knowledge with theoretical sophistication. I know of no one else who can move so easily among Dryden, Wordsworth, and Foucault, and hold all three in rich historical relation. The results are everywhere startling." -- Thompson, University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill

" The Work of Writing is a tour de force that pulls together Siskin's work on Wordsworth and Austen with an extensive array of lesser known literary figures and represents them all as major players in the historical drama of professionalizing writing, a drama whose outcome determined the kind of work we now perform as literary scholars." -- Nancy Armstrong, Brown University

"Clifford Siskin's important and original new book provides a sustained and often provocative material history of writing during what some now call the long eighteenth century. He questions received wisdom on the relation of writing and work, remaining alert to the implications of his findings for our own moment of disciplinary crisis. His comments on disciplinarity and professionalism, gender and georgic, nationalism and 'novelism' should reach a wide audience." -- Robert Folkenflik, University of California Irvine

"This powerful book is at once a contribution to theory and to the literary history of the long eighteenth century. Siskin brilliantly engages terms such as 'profession,' 'disciplinarity,' 'nation,' 'lyric,' 'novel,' and the two nouns of his title to give these words a new resonance as he maps out the profound changes that British literature and society underwent during the 18th and early 19th centuries." -- Herbert Lindenberger, Stanford University

"Siskin is a magnificent synthesizer, perhaps the best in the field of British Romanticism. He assimilates data from many different disciplines and puts them all together with a new clarity and economy and energy. Not only does he synopsize work in literary studies, history, sociology, and political theory, but he makes the so-called Augustan and the so-called Romantic periods cohere--a major feat. The book is as clear and as thrilling as any work in the field I have recently read." -- Kurt Heinzelman, University of Texas

"Siskin successfully relocates literature within a broader history of culture, writing, social change, economics, sociology, and communication theory."-- Choice

As today's new technologies challenge the reign of writing, Clifford Siskin puts our current concerns about such change into history. In the 18th and early 19th centuries in Britain, he argues, the "new" technology was writing itself. How did its proliferation -- in print and through silent reading -- coalesce into the dominant forms of literary modernity, and with what consequences?

What changed, strikingly and fundamentally, were ways of knowing and of working. Admonitions against young women reading novels were not merely matters of Augustan conservatism but signals of those shifts: they warned against the capacity of the technology to change those who used it. Despite such caution, Britain saw, between 1700 and 1830, the advent of both modern disciplinarity and modern professionalism. These new divisions of knowledge and of labor were the work of writing, as was the engendering, at their intersection, of the discipline that took writing itself as its professional work -- Literature.

                                      Book Description

Focusing on the Native Americans the Spanish called Tequesta and their ancestors, Ancient Miamians covers the 10,000 years from 8,000 B.C. to A.D. 1761, painting a vivid word portrait of a resident from each of six eras as they make tools, obtain food, deal with their fellow humans, and seek harmony with the forces that govern their lives. From first light to evening firelight, McGoun presents for the non-specialist a series of narratives depicting a single day in each of the lives of six typical men and women who once lived on the land around present-day Biscayne Bay.

This concise and readable tale of the remarkable predecessors of Miami-Dade's current 2 million residents is the first such treatment of Florida's pre-European and early historic native people. Without violating archaeological fact, McGoun includes the major cultural periods and significant archaeological sites in the region, all in terms of day-to-day life rendered in engaging narrative. The story begins with the first settlers, who moved down the Florida peninsula more than 10 millennia ago, pursuing large animals that are now mostly extinct. It draws to a close with the 250 years that saw the Tequesta themselves become extinct, beginning with a time when "the English and their friends just won't take 'Go away' for an answer, and they become such pests that finally even the Spaniards look good, or at least better."

                                      Book Description

Here's the perfect introduction for people who want to go organic but don't know how to get started—or aren't always sure they know what "organic" means. At last, environmental consciousness and organic living have moved beyond mere good intentions to become workable lifestyle choices. The author reviews the history of organic practices, starting in the 1930s with a certain Mister Kellogg (of cereal fame), who was then thought to be eccentric, and continuing to the present day. She goes on to discuss the following idea in depth: Why go organic? ... Buying organic foods and what the many certification symbols mean ... Growing organic food, with tips on choosing vigorous plants ... Cooking organic, including recipes and preparation methods ... Teaching kids the benefits of organic living. A concluding chapter points out the limitations of going organic and offers a few simple rules to live by. The book features approximately 250 illustrations, all in full color.

This book has been very helpful to me in learning how to incorporate more ways to be organic in my life/home/eating/etc.
Practical advise & ways to make a difference, even if it is only a small one.
Effective ways to go organic in regards to babies (glass not plastic bottles!, pesticides in kids), building homes (low voc paint, no voc paint), painting, eating, gardening, banking and a lot more.
Of the 4 "green" books that I own so far, this one has the most & best advice in it.

Oddly enough one of the best pieces of organic food advise I have heard that this book seems to drive home is read labels as if you were reading a medication prescription, and know what is in the item you are buying, whether it is food, clothing, cars, furniture. Then stop and ask yourself if you really need the item or simply want it. Less is best and thinking as if you lived pre WW2 helps because this was an era where people grew more of their own foods, wore clothes out, repaired items rather than toss them out and buy a new item.

5 out of 5 stars Great introduction to Organic living.......2001-09-28

Loved the simple approach, but best of all learned Organics is not a marketing hype, but an increasing, interested way of life for many. This motivated me to search out organics, laws, labeling, government agencies and other web sites. I have learned Americans are bombarded with unnecessary chemicals, and consumerism, and we should have a choice about what we purchase. Some states are ahead in this lifestyle than others. Unfortunately, we trust the products with the small amounts, but fail to think about its build up. I am learning. Great book, and making the transformation into organics-food, cosmetics, cleaning etc. And have saved money by living a more simple life.
