The book all working Americans need today--how to speak money to your boss...and get it!
Customer Reviews:
anogueira@hotmail.com.......1999-01-30
You probably won't get a raise in 7 days just because you read this book, but it helps to have someone explain how your boss ('power') sees the issue of a raise ('money): how to talk money to power. The authors also provide some useful information on patterns of compensation and the whole psychology of HR departments. Recommended (but don't expect a raise, ok?)

Customer Reviews:
Excellent review.......2005-10-19
I find Satyajit Das's books to be quite comprehensive. Indeed, the material is encyclopedic in its coverage of swaps, derivatives and other structured products.
Mr. Das provides original source material on swap structures and paces the reader through difficult material with ease. Anybody who is willing to spend the time will find the material well written from structurer, marketer and client perspectives. This makes it very useful for trading desks of investment banks and hedge funds. The level of detail may appear daunting at first but is necessary to acquire knowledge in this specialized field.
I have bought most of his books including the current boxed set of 4 books that covers newer areas of credit and interest rate derivatives, and structured products. I am therefore at a loss to see where one of the reviewers has given him a poor rating which I feel is wholly undeserved!
I'd encourage Mr. Das to continue his prolific output as it serves a real need in the investment community.
Comprehensive coverage.......2000-10-01
This is a very comprehensive book on this subject. Covers all the aspects of Swaps and related issues. Although, some isues like BIS guidelines are changed since the last publication of this book, it gives good idea of the regulatory and taxation issues of swaps & other related derivatives. This book can be used as a reference in this field. (not for first time reader of this topic)
Dense, mostly unreadable.......2000-06-28
This book is probably useful as a reference for practitioners. (Or was useful -- as another reviewer points out, much material is dated.) As a text or learning tool it is not particularly good. While I understand that my disppointment was probably from a misunderstanding of the books target, in the sections that I have read, the author sometimes suffers from failing to see the forest for the trees.
Comprehensive, but information/technology is dated........1998-03-29
Good source of basic information, but not much on hedging which is key. Also, information is somewhat outdated. Good to have for a reference book on daycounts, basic structures, etc.
Book Description
This collection of original essays from distinguished legal philosophers offers a challenging assessment of the nature and viability of legal positivism, an approach to legal theory that continues to dominate contemporary legal theoretical debates. To what extent is the law adequately described as autonomous? Should legal theorists maintain a conceptual separation of law and morality? These and other questions are addressed by the authors of this carefully edited collection, which will be of interest to all lawyers and scholars interested in legal philosophy.

Heart-gripping Tales Filled With Mystery, Suspense, and Unexpected Love
The special value volume combines two of George MacDonald's most beloved novels. The Baronet's Song tells the enchanting story of "Wee Sir Gibbie of the Highlands." Gibbie is a seemingly destitute orphan, whose lifethough he is unable to speakcommunicates truth, innocent love, and goodness. The Shepherd's Castle continues the story of Gibbie's best friend, Donal Grant, in a classic tale of love, dark secrets, and true Christian character.
Customer Reviews:
A beautiful character portrayed!.......2003-11-18
Being a disciple of C. S. Lewis, I wanted to read from George MacDonald--an author who is known to have influenced Lewis.
I read the "Curate's Awakening" with interest, but the story of Gibbie is a cut above, absolutely touching and meaningful. MacDonald artistically and movingly paints a picture of this young, neglected, then orphaned, mute boy who has a beautiful heart, despite his difficult life.
What "gets" me is that he refuses to play at being a victim, although one might jump at the chance--for he is cruely treated in several instances. The book kept me throughout Gibbie's youth until his young adulthood.
The beauty of the characterization and the fictional storyline make a thoughtful, heartwarming read and healthy escape.
Hats off to Phillips for the edit.

Book Description
Robert C. Kriebel's sympathetic biography of the prominent nineteenth-century Lafayette family weaves the story of four fascinating individuals into the web of state and national history and culture. The family members include John A. Stein, the distinguished state politician who devoted years to the founding of Purdue University; the indomitable mother, Virginia, who pursued a career in the local library when left widowed and penniless; the talented, albeit disreputable, Orth Stein, who achieved prominence as a journalist and illustrator but was also tried for murder; and the sheltered Evaleen Stein, who achieved local fame as a poet and author of children's books.

Book Description
The harrowing history of the Nazi attempt to annihilate the Jews of Europe during the Second World War is illustrated in this series of 320 highly detailed maps. This atlas traces each phase of the Holocaust, beginning with the anti-Semitic violence of prewar Germany and leading to the German conquest of countries in which the Jews had lived for centuries. Presented in chronological order, the maps document in compelling detail the story of the Holocaust, from the spread of the early random killings of Jews and their systematic mass expulsion from thousands of towns and villages to the establishment of ghettos and the setting up of the death camps. Also shown on the maps are more than two hundred acts of resistance and revolt, as well as areas of Jewish partisan activity and other avenues of escape and rescue.
Customer Reviews:
Tracing the horros of the Shoah.......2007-07-12
In this volume, Martin Gilbert, who is possibly the most prolific historian on the history of the Holocaust, traces the geographical history of the Holocaust using maps accompanied by detailed commentary to illustrate the scope and horror that took place between 1941 and 1945. Also included in this volume is a detailed account of antisemitic violence that was rife in Europe in the early 20th Century.
Gilbert painstakingly covers each region of Europe and North Africa, where Jews were targeted, interred and murdered. Gilbert gives an account of the systematic attempts to exterminate the Jews: the random killing and anti-Jewish pogroms, the forcing of Jews into ghettos, the deliberate starvation of these Jews, deportations and death camps, slave labor and mass killings.
Gilbert also enumerates the countries where many Jews fled to escape Nazi persecution. Between 1933 and 1938, 500 000 German Jews emigrated or fled abroad, including more than 33 000 to Palestine, where they joined tens of thousands of recent Jewish immigrants from Poland. After the war, 200 000 survivors of the camps immigrated to Palestine, hence, Holocaust survivors and their descendants make up a substantial part of Israel's population today.
Gilbert record the names, ages and places of birth of some specific Holocaust victims whose cases he examines. He also details lesser-known locations of the Nazi persecution such as Morocco, Libya and Tunisia which were under Nazi occupation. Every period is intensely covered, as is every geographic region where Jews suffered and died.
The atlas is supplemented with photographs, some of which are very graphic. Two important maps are placed at the end of the book estimating how many Jews from each country were murdered during the Holocaust, and how many Jews returned to their countries of birth after the war.
Through his use of maps to illustrate the destruction of European Jewry and eyewitness accounts of the Nazi atrocities, Gilbert succeeds as always in combining the recording of the larger events, with a ground eye view.
More knowledge about History's greatest Evil.......2005-05-04
One of the way the human mind learns is through ordering complex realities into diagrams and pictures and illustrations and maps. These somehow give us a sense of really comprehending what we understand only vaguely.
So these maps which tell the story of the Holocaust , from the time of initial German violence against the Jews through the time of the destruction itself, and then for the remainder, the aftermath.
In collecting this material Martin Gilbert one of the great modern historians , and one of the major historians of the Holocaust provides the reader with still more information, more means for knowing about, if not completely understanding, what is arguably the greatest act of collective Evil in human history.
Very thorough facts and figures.......2004-11-26
This detailed account of horrendous facts will bring tears to the eyes of the hardest ones.
Each of the numbers reported concerns human persons with their wives, family, parents, children. Behind each figure there is a drama. It is not a book about the holocaust, it's just figures and maps. There is no human aspect in these inhuman statistics.
Ever since the Greek classic period, the ones reporting a defeat are no longer killed. Martin Gilbert is supplying a very detailed, thorough and actualized report on one of the greatest defeat of humanity. He should be praised for that.
His book doesn't cover the documents which permitted the holocaust or the proofs substantiating what is not to be proven. It simply attempts at tracing each and every deportation by the nazi (no capital N, please, they have lost such a right). This is an essential working tool for historians, if they can avoid loosing the human faces behind the figures.
I still rather work with Raul Hilberg, Richard Breitman, Walter Laqueur, Randolph Braham, Yitshak Arad, Gerald Reitlinger, Lucy Dawidowicz, Saul Friedlander, Yeshuda Bauer, John Mendelsohn, Henry Friedlander & Sybil Milton, and many other with the same approach but Martin Gilbert book is always next to each of them, it maintains a synthetic global view and it is a reference as well.
If you have an interest in the nazi mass murders, you simply cannot afford not to have Gilbert's atlas. By the way why don't we have a similar Atlas on the goulag as yet? This lack shows how Gilbert's book filled a hisorical need.
Don't be satisfied with Martin Gilbert's Atlas, but don't do without it.
People dying in the camps were begging for us to tell: Jewish or not Jewish, let's keep on telling.

Book Description
Atlas of the Holocaust, the product of seven years' research, is a comprehensive record of the Nazi attempt to annihilate the Jews of Europe during World War II.
World-renowned historian Martin Gilbert has drawn each of the 316 maps especially for this atlas. All are fully annotated and are based on documentary evidence from a wide range of sources.
The atlas traces each phase of the Holocaust, beginning with the anti-Semitic violence of prewar Germany and leading to the German conquest of countries in which the Jews had lived for centuries. Presented in chronological order, the maps document in compelling detail, month by month and week by week, the story of the Holocaust, from the spread of the early random killings of Jews and their systematic mass expulsion from thousands of towns and villages to the establishment of ghettos and the setting up of the death camps. The atlas ends with the death marches and executions in the final days of the Allied liberation. Also shown on the maps are more than two hundred acts of resistance and revolt, as well as areas of Jewish partisan activity and other avenues of escape and rescue. Many maps tell the stories of hundreds of children deported to their deaths. Others bear witness to individuals active in revolt and tell moving sagas of their courage and defiance.

Tracing the murder of 6 million through maps.......2007-06-01
Martin Gilbert is possibly the most prolific historian on the history of the holocaust.
In this volume gilbert has compiled 316 maps, together with a commentary t o illustrate the scope of the horror that took place between 1941 and 1945.
He begins by tracing the history of anti-Semitic violence in Europe, with maps and history of anti-Jewish violence before the First World War, and anti-Jewish violence in Europe between 1918 and 1932.
One fascinating map details the two thousand year history of Jewish life in Europe by 1933, explaining how long Jews had lived in each country in Europe covered.
Gilbert painstakingly covers each region of Europe and North Africa, where Jews were targeted, interend and murdered. He details the greater massacres and the lesser known killings.
He also outlines the countries to which German Jewish refugees were recieved.
From Germany between 1933 and 1938, 500 000 Jews emigrated or fled abroad, including more than 33 000 to the then 'Palestine', where they joined tens of thousands of recent Jewish immigrants from Poland.
After the war, 200 000 survivors of the camps emigrated to "Palestine".
Hence descendants of refugees from Nazism and holocaust survivors make up a substantial part of Israel's population today.
Gilbert does not spare the horror when he describes the random killing and anti-Jewish pogroms, the anti-Jewish measures taken in different countries, the forcing of Jews into ghettos, the deliberate starvation of Jews in these ghettos, the deportations and death camps, the slave labout systems and the mass killings.
This is a very comprehensive digest, and although there were so many whose names have not been recorded, Gilbert does record the names, ages and places of birth of some holocaust victims whose cases he examines.
He also details lesser known locations of the Nazi persecution, such as the fate of Jews in Morocco, LIbya and Tunisia under Nazi/Axis occupation during this period.
Ever period is intensely covered, as is every geographic region where Jews suffered and died.
Several maps detail the cases of some of the children deported to from various places in Europe, and from various countries, such as maps showing the names, ages and places from which several children were deported from France.
We wonder about the lives and cruel deaths of the precious children whose ages and names we see, but whom we know little else about.
The atlas is supplemented about 40 , sometimes very graphic photographs, and two important maps are placed at the end of the book estimated how many Jews from each country were murdered during the holocaust, and how many Jews returned to their countries of birth after the war.
Always keeping the human touch and concern for each individual victim and survivor, Gilbert provides the stories of three of several children who survived and were taken to the children's home at Ulm: Idel Levitan, Renja Fraum and Zlata Tauber-with their photographs.
Gilbert succeeds as always with combining the recording of the larger events, with a ground eye view.
Very informative.......1997-09-29
To read this book is a mitzvah. I showed this book to a survivor whos village no longer exists. She started to cry when her village was mentioned and she said "someone does remember us". This was very touching and I think that all survivors should know that there are many who still remember.
The thing that I felt that was lacking, is that there was very little detail of when of Jews of Italy and Greece were deported to the camps.

Atlas of the Holocaust: Maps Tell the Story.......2002-07-02
The Holocaust was such a singular event in the annals of evil that it is audacious for any one book to try to sum up its genesis and causes. The HISTORICAL ATLAS OF THE HOLOCAUST does both eminently well. The book is divided into nine sections:
I: Europe Before the war
II: The Holocaust in Eastern Europe
III: Nazi Extermination Camps
IV: The Holocaust in Western Europe
V: The Holocaust in Central Europe
VI: The Holocaust in Southern Europe and Hungary
VII: Rescue and Jewish Armed Resistance
VIII: Death Marches and Liberation
IX: Postwar Europe 1945-1950
Each section manages to take its topic and reduce it to maps and diagrams. Some of these pictorial aids are the type often seen in innocuous surroundings: encyclopedias, almanacs, high school texts. The first section contains a full color map of the European Jewish population circa 1933. This map serves to remind the reader what was lost. The numbers of living Jews then was comfortably large, measuring in the hundreds of thousands and the millions. Other pictures in the first section begin to use color and numbers as a way to force the reader to view history not as an impossibly long ago event that does not touch us now, but as a living reminder that behind each color, each number beat a heart that was most often Jewish, but was also Gypsy, Slav, priest, racially 'impure', the sick, the old, the non-Aryan.
Some of these maps are the kind like a camera lens can produce for a 'big picture' effect. You can see a vast range of land, colors, cities, camps. Others allow the lens to zoom in for a street length image. You can see individual houses for each camp. It is almost as if the editors cannot decide what is the greater horror: to see death up close or from a distance.
Each map and illustration is accompanied by text that is simply not available in one volume anywhere else. The list of camps well-described and well-illustrated is depressingly long:
Chelmno, Belzec, Treblinka, Auschwitz, Majdanek, Treblinka, Dachau, Ravensbrueck. The list seems endless, but it is necessary for all people who call themselves enlightented to plow through them all. The stories behind each dot on a map represent a chilling mixture of a centuries-long hatred of Jews with what these haters did with that hate.
Numbers have a way of acting like an anaesthetic. Throughout this book, you wonder how and what and why did all this occur. The maps and numbers tell the answer for this generation to read to think. For the generation of the 'impure' in Europe in the early 1940s, the numbers were truly life and death. Reading this book ought to allow the next generation not to forget that.

On the Origins of Dangerous Frauds.......2003-12-16
The ordeal referred to in the title is the difficulty which Jews had, during and following their emancipation, with acquiring and practicing the civility, politeness and decorum of the greater Western culture into which they were trying to enter. Having formerly lived in villages, surrounded by family, friends and familiars, they were shocked to discover an urban life where just about everyone they met were strangers not only to them, but to each other. This required them to learn the stylized manners of an Emily Post (the part about Einstein encountering her book is hilarious), adopt polite speech, give up bargaining for fixed prices, and acquire the art of eating without crumbs gushing all over. This, according to Cuddihy, caused such a strain on their psyche, that they produced the "geniuses" displayed in the title in some sort of perverted, self-conscious retaliation.
This incredible thesis is made with all the seriousness of a professor, in the turgid prose of a good man, made nearly unintelligible by his contact with a Doctoral program of a major American university. I don't know whether the thesis is really true, but he puts up an astonishing amount of evidence for it.
The style of the book reads as if it was out of the middle of the 19th century, rather than three quarters of the way through the twentieth, peppered as it is by untranslated quotes and words from French, Latin, German and Yiddish, as well of those recently coined by the pseudo-scientists and deconstructionists who infest every university department of English today. References to hundreds of obscure works abound, and an intimate knowledge of the intellectual curiosities of the early twentieth century is required.
It does make you wonder, though, about the greatness of the intellectual geniuses of the title. Let see, Freud founded a school of psychoanalysis that believed that the love of little boys for their mothers is sexual, and little girls are screwed up because they mourn for what is missing between their legs. He retarded the progress of scientific psychology by about a century, I think. Marx, well, invented communism, the Soviet Union and Stalin. Enough said. Levi-Strauss and his followers in the Frankfurt school tried to reduce Western Civilization to a pathology. With some success, I might add.

Book Description
Protected areas operate within complex ecological and social systems, presenting challenges to protected areas that cannot be resolved by technical solutions alone. Achieving the management objectives of protected areas requires a social approach in which strategic communication is a key instrument. This book explores the often underestimated potential of communication, sharing valuable experiences from protected areas across the world, drawing on papers presented at the Vth IUCN World ParksCongress, 2003 and others
