A Quick and Dirty Introduction to Accounting Methods.......2004-07-06

This is one really great book in an impressive series of publications. Everything you need to know to have a passing familiarity with accounting statements is presented in easy read and understand fashion. After reading this book, you can use and understand some of the more basic jargon of business, investment and finance.

As is the tradition with every great business book, the text ends with Chapter 7 (you know, of bankruptcy fame!). Each chapter presents a different aspect of financial statements, beginning with the income statement, the balance sheet, and the statement of cash flows, and integrates the three to demonstrate how they can be used for financial analysis, inventory tracking and allocating for depreciation. Each chapter starts by explaining the topic fully, and offers several examples of its use in actual business practice. Although the book is a slim volume, it packs a lot of information, being brief, to the point and insightful all at the same time. Additionally, its small size also means that it will not take up too much space on one's shelf of must-have and must-keep books.

I highly recommend this book to anyone having the need to understand financial statements at a glance. Interested readers should also check out some of the other titles in the Agile Manager Series which may be helpful.

Book Description

In The Art of Alibi, Jonathan Grossman reconstructs the relation of the novel to nineteenth-century law courts. During the Romantic era, courthouses and trial scenes frequently found their way into the plots of English novels. As Grossman states, "by the Victorian period, these scenes represented a powerful intersection of narrative form with a complementary and competing structure for storytelling." He argues that the courts, newly fashioned as a site in which to orchestrate voices and reconstruct stories, arose as a cultural presence influencing the shape of the English novel.

Weaving examinations of novels such as William Godwin's Caleb Williams, Mary Shelley's Frankenstein, and Charles Dickens's The Pickwick Papers and Oliver Twist, along with a reading of the new Royal Courts of Justice, Grossman charts the exciting changes occurring within the novel, especially crime fiction, that preceded and led to the invention of the detective mystery in the 1840s.

Excellent and Imaginative.......2003-12-16

This fascinating book looks at the relationship between the trial narratives of criminal defendants and their literary counterparts from the late eighteenth century through the mid nineteenth century. Grossman discusses a number of well-known British novelists including Gaskell, Dickens, and Godwin, along with some lesser-known writers. Unlike much 'law and literature' research, Grossman has thought carefully about both areas, and his readings are fascinating and nuanced. He also makes some interesting observations about the rise of the detective novel in 19th century England.

An examination of the role of infinity in mathematics........2004-07-19

Zippin's engaging text examines how infinity arises in mathematics. It requires only a solid grounding in high school mathematics and a willingness to think. However, it will most profitably be read by those who are familiar with calculus.

After a brief overview, Zippin begins within the natural numbers. He shows how inductive reasoning is used to search for patterns that can be used to prove results about infinite sequences and series. He examines limits of sequences and series from a geometric point of view. In particular, he considers geometric series and the Fibonacci sequence, using the latter to explore the properties of the golden rectangle. He concludes the text by discussing recursive definition, proofs by mathematical induction, and the pigeon hole principle.

I found the material intriguing and the exposition generally clear. However, there were places where I felt that definitions were imprecise. His proof that the square root of 2 is irrational, while elegant, is harder to generalize than other proofs of that result. Zippin uses numerous examples to illustrate the results that he proves.

Zippin's decision to examine limits from a geometric standpoint provides an interesting alternative to the analytical approach taken in calculus courses. It also helps the reader understand his arguments in his chapter on how the golden rectangle is related to the golden mean and the Fibonacci numbers.

The exericses, for which answers are provided in the back of the text, are thought-provoking and some are quite challenging. I found reading his solutions instructive.

Zippin provides a now dated (the text was published in 1962) bibliography so that the reader can explore the topics he discusses further. The reader may wish to consult the texts Invitation to Number Theory (New Mathematical Library) by Oystein Ore and Numbers: Rational and Irrational (New Mathematical Library) by Ivan Niven while reading this text.

GREAT INTRODUCTION TO INFINITY!.......2001-02-28

This book was my first introduction to the infinite. Although it is easy enough for undergraduate study, all will find Zippin's book scintillating and fascinating. A great read for anyone interested in this subject!
