5 out of 5 stars The big picture.......2004-08-16

A great primer introducing the trader/investor into the importance of economic indicators and how it relates to trading fundamentals. I was really impressed how Mr. Kettell simplifies the myraid of economic indicators into specific groupings such as market sensitive-indicators, consumer expenditures, and investment spending. The text does an excellent job in providing trading scenarios into the asset classes and how economic indicators can turn short or long positions into potential profits. I'd also recommend "The Traders Guide to Key Economic Indicators," by Richard Yamarone for novice traders desiring to get an inside look into the economy.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent book on how to interprete economic indicators.......2000-11-29

Have you ever asked why economists and investment analysts wait eagerly for and devote their attention to new economic indicators published by various agencies in the U.S. every month? Furthermore, how do you interpret these interrelated economic and psychological signals and what are their impacts on financial assets? The author has managed to address these questions in a very comprehensive, sensible and easily accessible way, making "What drives Financial Markets" a great book for all who are interested in the link between economics and the financial world.

            5 out of 5 stars EXCELLENT ENCYCLOPEDIA!.......2004-02-15

This book is the best encyclopedia for atmospheric sciences I have ever seen so far in my 20 years of meteorology experience. College Libraries across the nation must have this book, especially the ones that offer meteorology programs. This book is much depth...more than any of the other meteorology dictionary or handbook. It would be a great book for students, especially meteorology students to own for their reference purposes. It is not great that these books cost $1,400 dollars. However, when students get their income, They should buy it! Like I own a set of these myself after I was able to save for it!

              Book Description

Optoelectronic devices are currently being developed at an extraordinary rate. Organic light-emitting diodes, photovoltaic devices and electro-optical modulators are pivotal to the future of displays, photosensors and solar cells, and communication technologies. This book details the theories underlying the mechanisms involved in the relevant organic materials and covers, at a basic level, how the organic components are made.

The first part of the book introduces the fundamental theories used to describe ordered solids and goes onto detail on concepts applicable to localised energy levels. Then the methods used to determine energy levels particular to perfectly ordered molecular and macromolecular systems are discussed along with a detailed consideration of the effects of quasi-particles. The function of excitons and their transfer between two molecules is studied and, in addition, the problems associated with interfaces and charge injection into resistive media are presented.

More technological aspects are covered in the second part, which details the actual methods used to fabricate devices based on organic materials, such as dry etching. The principal characterisation techniques are also highlighted. Specific attention is paid to visual displays using organic light-emitting diodes; the conversion of photons into electrical energy (the photovoltaic effect); and for communications and information technologies, the electro-optical modulation of signals.

                Book Description

Appalachia continues to produce some of our country's finest writers. The region's rich oral tradition feeds a strong literature—fiction, poetry, and memoir—shaped by the mountains of Appalachia but universal in scope. The work of women writers is particularly noteworthy. Despite the uncertainties of jobs and of homes, several generations of women writers have earned critical and national acclaim. But because their work is sometimes regarded as purely of regional interest, acquiring this artistic bounty oftentimes can be difficult.

Listen Here: Women Writing in Appalachia is a landmark anthology that brings together the work of 105 Appalachian women writers, including Dorothy Allison, Harriette Simpson Arnow, Annie Dillard, Nikki Giovanni, Denise Giardina, Barbara Kingsolver, Jayne Anne Phillips, Janice Holt Giles, George Ella Lyon, Sharyn McCrumb, and Lee Smith. Editors Sandra L. Ballard and Patricia L. Hudson offer a diverse sampling of time periods and genres, established authors and emerging voices.

From regional favorites to national bestsellers, this unprecedented gathering of Appalachian voices displays the remarkable talent of the region's women writers who've made their mark at home and across the globe.

If you have an interest in Appalachian cultre, history, literature, or women this is a must. I discovered this book while doing research on female Appalachian writers (a genre largely ignore by the literary communiy). These writers will touch your heart, bring a tear to your eye, bring a smile and make you laugh out loud. The best collection of Appalachian writing I have had the good fortune to come across. A wonderful way to experience Appalahia if you are a stranger to the culture, an even better way to remember it if you've left the area, and finally a wonderful stroll down memory lane if you are living it.

I discovered "Listen Here" while browsing with girlfriends in a bookstore in Spruce Pine, N.C. this past weekend. I was completely charmed by the book's contents. So much so, that while I and my four friends ran errands around town,I read selections from the book from the backseat of the car. We laughed and cried over the things I read, identifying so well with the stories, feelings and images of women's everyday lives which are so eloquently depicted in "Listen Here." This is a wonderful addition to any library of fine, deeply-felt writing. Men will enjoy it; women will celebrate it.
I am in the process of publishing my own book and hope that it will touch readers the way this book has touched me. Congratulations to Sandra Ballard and Patricia Hudson - you've produced a masterpiece. That's all I have to say before the season starts - a line which will make sense to you if you read "Listen Here."

                    Book Description

World War II changed the face of the United States, catapulting the country out of economic depression, political isolation, and social conservatism. Ultimately, the war was a major formative factor in the creation of modern America. This unique, twelve-volume set provides comprehensive coverage of this transformation in its domestic policies, diplomatic relations, and military strategies, as well as the changing cultural and social arenas. The collection presents the history of the creation of a super power prior to, during, and after the war, analyzing all major phases of the U.S. involvement, making it a one-stop resource that will be essential for all libraries supporting a history curriculum.

5 out of 5 stars Fascinating overview of People Power.......2005-12-22

Worldwide media coverage of disasters over the last 12months have shown everyone the power of the people when we all act together for or against something.

Like so many others, I found the outpouring of real concern - as well as money and help - in the wake of the Tsunami last Boxing Day very moving to witness. This is what it might have been like had the anti-slavery campaign been conducted under the floodlights of today's global media. I am sure it would have created just this sort of dramatic groundswell of world opinion - and world outrage.

Consequently, I jumped to buy this book when I came across it on Amazon, and was not disappointed. It is not a mushy overview of the subject, but a considered and very welcome historical introduction. I didn't find it a particularly difficult read, but I must admit to being very interested in the subject to start with, so I'm biased anyway. I think it offers a really interesting angle on and into some of the most important issues in world history.

Where perhaps I disagreed with the author was when he questioned the impact of world opinion on some local customs - where there is imperviousness or deafness, I think this is often because at the local level "world opinion" is still hard to hear, for example against child labor.

The technological faciltiies for sharing the information necessary to generate anything approximating world opinion are comparatively recent, but the author argues well that world opinion is already a powerful force in the world and in the big scheme of things this is very significant.

While national governments may feel they have the international leverage or club membership to ignore world opinion and shrug off negative reports, I do agree with Stearns that at some point in the not too distant future financial and political forces will be brought into line with world opinion, and it will exert a very powerful force in even these areas, and he gives examples of where it has already.

His suggestion to solicit research on world opinion to feed back into national the national arena would find a ready audience among the many who today feel disempowered or alienated from national politics by the sense that their views are not being listened to.

A really good book on an important subject.

4 out of 5 stars Misleading Title, Difficult Read, Useful Observations.......2005-10-26

The title is misleading--Global Outrage is a bit strong--the book is actually a very long narrative about the emergence of "world opinion," a phrase that appears innumberable times on every page. it is therefore a difficult read with no illustrations, charts, or tables. Somewhat tedious.

Removing one star, then, the book is never-the-less quite interesting in its topic, which the author says has not been systematically reviewed in the past, and its findings. The author reviews the early days of anti-slavery, women's rights, labor rights, child labor, and the environment, concluding with the new campaigns against McDonald's wrappers, sweatshops, and Central American death squads.

Among the gems that made the purchase and the effort worthwhile:

                      1) World opinion, when it does mobilize, is generally right.

                      2) World opinion is insufficient to deter a great power such as the USA from its chosen course, but it can impose great and lasting costs on that power as time goes on.

                      3) World opinion is equally helpless against local customs and conditions, including the economic need for child labor and the deep cultural attachment to female mutilation in some regions.

                      4) World opinion is a force that rises and ebbs, whose tools and techniques change across issues and times, but it is a constant force in that it exists and it can have an impact.

                      5) World opinion has been reduced in force by the demise of the U.S. Information Agency and the once powerful labor unions whose AFL-CIO did so much to nurture labor rights around the globe. I had two thoughts as I contemplated this observation: first, that the US and the multinationals were short-sighted in ending the one and crushing the other--it is only now that we appreciate the intangible power for good they both represented; and second, as we grapple with the needs of Public Diplomacy and Strategic Communication, it is clear we need to reinvent both.

                      6) The book excels at pointing out across several examples that world opinion is powered by information sharing. The most important information sharing is from the bottom up--from those who are persecuted to the outside world, and then back again in the form of petitions, letters, emails, etc. Information sharing is also important across national and cultural boundaries, helping raises expectations and standards as well as the costs of non-compliance with expectations.

                      7) Finally, "world opinion" is put forth by the author as the means by which humanity agrees on common standards and expectations that co-exist with regional and cultural differences, and provide a shared vision for humanity.

I found the author's concluding suggestions quite relevant to the global Information Operations campaign that the USA is about to embark upon: he suggested that we need to research as deeply and broadly as possible where popular opinion rests on a wide variety of issues, and use that as a benchmark for evaluating the acceptability and sustainability of governmental politices as well as corporate practices; and we should, at least once a decade, examine the organizations, tools, and techniques of "world opinion" to see who they are changing, and if they are changing in the composition of constituencies or the focus of effort.

Concluding, the author is slightly optemistic about "world opinion" being a countervailing force against both militant Americans and radical Islamists, but he notes that "world opinion" is by no means a steady or assured power, only one that will have some form of influence, always varied.

This is an academic work, with a good index, notes, and recommended readings for each chapter. It can be tough going, but all things considered, a useful reading on that intangible power called "world opinion."

                      Book Description

The recognition of animal pain and stress, once controversial, is now acknowledged by legislation in many countries, but there is no formal recognition of animals ability to feel pleasure. Pleasurable Kingdom is the first book for lay-readers to present new evidence that animalslike humansenjoy themselves. It debunks the popular perception that life for most is a continuous, grim struggle for survival and the avoidance of pain. Instead it suggests that creatures from birds to baboons feel good thanks to play, sex, touch, food, anticipation, comfort, aesthetics, and more. Combining rigorous evidence, elegant argument and amusing anecdotes, leading animal behavior researcher Jonathan Balcombe proposes that the possibility of positive feelings in creatures other than humans has important ethical ramifications for both science and society.

                      4 out of 5 stars Don Graves.......2007-08-06

An excellent if somewhat concise read for anyone interested in examining how the evolutionary fitness of animal species may be influenced by individual's needs for pleasure. Science can not measure many of the diverse qualities that make up human or other animal interactions, nor should it try to do so. Whatever the evidential shortcomings of anecdotes or experiential observations, the author encourages the reader to draw on their own life experiences to corroborate the thesis that animal nature is not an inherently fearful nor a brutal competitive struggle for survival of the strongest, most ruthless or toughest. However unpleasant that any life may end, much of daily life existence is instead balanced with hedonistic individuals and inter- or intra-species collectives, benefiting from collaborative, companionable and enjoyable actions.

As an animal lover, a rabbit and bird fancier, I literally could not put this book down. I search out books on animal behavior and intelligence and there is little out there. The info on insect behaviour I found the most fascinating. It's about time that scientists are proving what us animal lovers have known all along.

                      5 out of 5 stars a really suberb book!.......2007-04-06

This book could open new directions for serious scientific work on subjective feelings and emotions of non-human animals. At the same time, the approach provided by Balcombe sheds new light on evolutionary explanations and their applicability to explaining human and non-human behavior and psychological/mental processes. A remarkable book indeed. Don't be misled by the sentimental cover-picture... it's a really important scientific achievement. A pioneering work.

5 out of 5 stars Focusing on the postive aspects of animals' lives.......2006-09-15

It was a pleasure to discover 'Pleasurable Kingdom'. In fact, I read Balcombe's book in one go - I could not put it down - and have been totally inspired by it. It has changed the way I am observing and relating with the animals who share my home. There were several aspects of "Pleasurable Kingdom" that I was particularly taken with: the author's astute critique of wildlife documentaries which concentrate on the violent deaths of animals (the 'struggle for survival' narrative in such films is relentless), and neglect all the other positive moments - and times for leisure -in a creature's life; Balcombe's respectful inclusion of insect, chicken and fish pleasure; and his compelling analysis of the implications for the future of our knowing non-human animals feel and appreciate pleasure as much as human animals do (albeit in different ways). The author's use of personal anecdotes is also very effective. I will be setting 'Pleasurable Kingdom' as a text for my course in human-animal studies. It will be challenging for students - in the very best kind of way.
