What is great about this book is that is very short in pages but at same time full with content. I got a lot of insigths on how the human relation works and how this applies in the working place. This book is very easy to read, well organized, and contains a LOT of essential information for anyone looking to purchase a home. I recommend it without any reservations.
One issue: I'm not sure if there's a newer edition of this book than I received last year, but it's a bit out of date. For better or worse, a lot of mortgages floating around out there today - especially for first time homeowners - are not your standard 30 year fixed. The financing section of the book needs an update detailing the pros and cons of the newer and more complicated types of financing that are more common today. It does this to an extent, but it's insufficient. Also, the figures used in the book are completely unrealistic. Mortgage rates are very different and so are housing prices. Not a problem if you can handle the math on your own, but certain tables are completely obsolete at this point in time.
Just one point on a personal note: This book really tells you about all the BAD things going on in real estate today. This isn't a fault - it's good to know about the million different potential pitfalls when buying a home - but it never tells you to put things into perspective. In other words, you can come away from reading this feeling very pessimistic and cynical about the entire process, which doesn't have to be the case. If you arm yourself with knowledge, a good attitude, and surround yourself with good people - namely the best real estate attorney and home inspector you can find - you'll find the experience isn't as bad as the book can make it seem.

I disagree with the people here who criticize this book for being about "buy low, sell high" and investment purposes. I have a feeling that these people are referring to some of Robert Irwin's other books aimed at real estate moguls in training; however, I took this book as being aimed at people who want to buy the house to actually live in it and to have a home of their own.
I used this book prior to buying my home and took much of the advice to heart. I interviewed several buyer's agents until I found one I liked and trusted, something that is spoken about in the book clearly. I also got some great advice from the finance sections that kept me from paying PMI and helped deal with the mortgage broker.
I bought this book for some friends who were looking at buying a house and it helped them when one deal went sour. I also loaned my copy to two friends shortly before they bought their houses... of course they didn't read it and got screwed on several points (mainly during inspection and negotiation). Oh well... you can lead a horse to water...
Buy and read this book if you're interested in looking for a house. It's well worth it.

This is a must have for first time home buyers. Or Even if you have been burned the first time around. This book was very informative and easy to read. I would also reccomend that you buy "The Dictionary of Real Estate Terms". This is a great book to have also. Keep both books close at hand when shopping for a loan. There are tons of loan programs out there. But remember an educated shopper ALWAYS WINS!

Many people reading this book will be law students, but even for those who aren't, Kermit Hall's collection is a terrific resource for readers of history and politics. In a real sense, if you're looking for a "road map" to see how America got to where it is, the "legal" history in many respects trumps military, political and economic histories. Here you'll find ll the usual suspects - Magna Charta, the Glorious Revolution of 1688, the Colonial Charters, the American Revolution, Dred Scott, Griswald, Miranda, Roe v. Wade. Expect the next edition to carry Bush v. Gore.
greatest hits of the law.......1998-02-05
This is a terrific book. I use it for teaching Law & Public Policy to political science masters students. The authors have done a great job winnowing the dusty tomes of legal history to the essential nuggets. In addition to the classics, they've selected some hilarious "voice of the people" sources one might never come across in standard legal history texts. I really enjoy this book!

A great teacher, a great book.......2002-08-21
Like the reviewer below, I was one of Presser's student at Northwestern University. This book was the most important, most influential book I purchased at NU. It begins with the confrontation between Sir Edward Coke and James I about whether the common law controlled the King's prerogative. Presser exploits the drama inherent in this piece of history to set up one of the main themes in the text: if one is going to have any conception of human rights at all, the restraint of arbitrary power is fundamental; the rule of law is vital.
This book should be required reading for anyone interested in the English common law, the U.S. Constitution, or the rights of a people to throw off a government (or a politician) guilty of an abuse of power. I was a better citizen for having read it.
In the classroom, Presser's love of the law, of legal history and reasoned debate was awe-inspiring. His book re-establishes an important cultural meme that appears to have gone underground in the 21st century:
the idea that liberty can not exist unless there is law, and law can not exist without morality.
Brilliant overview of American Legal History.......2000-04-18
I was fortunate to take Professor Presser's American Legal History class while I was on exchange at Northwestern University and this was our textbook.
As an Australian studying law in the US I was very interested in finding out about how the American Legal System developed. I felt the only way I could understand the present would be to look to the past and Presser's book was perfect for this purpose.
This book struck me as being exceptionally well put together; with insightful commentary on the selected readings and questions to enhance your understanding of the issues.
Perhaps the most refreshing characteristic of this book is its balance - it puts both sides of the controversial issues it considers so that we can make up our own mind.
It has given me a much deeper understanding of the American Legal System and American Society in general.

I enjoyed this book. It gives insight from raisers of peafowl, and I think that any information is welcome since books on peafowl are rare. This book is best intended for people not terribly familiar with peafowl, however, at times it seems more like a show-and-tell by the authors rather than a purely informational book. Still, I found it interesting and fun.
Wacky is Right.......2002-05-27
This book is not so much instructional as it is story telling. Many examples are constant references to other animals the author has (unrelated to the raising of peafowl). The information is also cut short as the author had only limited knowledge of a couple of the breeds. If you are looking for a book on Peafowl husbandry, this falls short. But it is pretty good for a 10 year old to get familiar with peafowl.

Too many references to Vol.I for the information. Reads like a childrens story.

Not the greatest introduction to spatial information systems.......2004-12-11
I am a Ph.D candidate in GISs and when I was an undergraduate this book was the first one recommended to me as the "bible" on the topic. Well...it definitely is a commendable effort from the authors (especially considering it was written circa 1990) but absolutely not the bible.
The book tries to cover most aspects, theories, and topics that come together to comprise a GIS and does not have a particular focus on any of the sub-disciplines. There are many examples and figures which enhance understanding of some difficult concepts, however, there also major weaknesses.
The primary one, at least to me, is the lack of structure and organization. One would expect the provision of some fundamental theoretical starting points at the beginning and then incremental building and expansion on those concepts as chapters progress. Unfortunately this is not the case as many topics are interweaved and repeated at several parts of the book and the chapter-structure does not seem to have a well-thought rationale. There is in general an abrupt and rapid introduction to many different topics without some provision for allowing the readers to consolidate and digest the incoming knowledge incrementally. In the end this might leave novice gis readers more confused than informed.
Another problem is the omission of precise definitions for many terms commonly used in GISs or their substitution with descriptive narratives instead.
Finally, this book is old and hence, outdated. As such it does not include references to significant advances in the field that took place in the 90's. For example, two important topics not addressed are uncertainty and qualitative reasoning. In addition, the examples often refer to software implementations of the era, which now might be completely ouf of play.
There are much better and newer introductory books for GIS and spatial information systems and two that I would recommend are Michael Worboy's "GIS: a computing perspective (second edition)" complemented with Nicholas Chrisman's "Exploring Geographic Information Systems". This book serves to me only as a quick reference on certain topics and it does so only in very rare occasions.
If you are a collector of GIS literature you might want to buy it. If you are looking for a good introduction to the field, buy another book instead.

quintessential Feynman.......2007-01-29
This is probably not the first book to read about Feynman. I think the best introductory read is Surely You're Joking Mr. Feynman. However, this one is unique in that it gives a first hand objective account of his life, personality and achievements (particularly in Physics). It's unfortunate that I have had to skip parts of certain essays (written originally for Physics Today) because they required the kind of Physics knowledge that I do not have, in order to understand and appreciate what Feynman's contribution was to the problem. Nonetheless, the book is a pleasure to read, and some essays are gems in that respect. I especially liked Richard Feynman and the Connection Machine by W. Daniel Hillis. Just when I'm thinking I've learned all of the interesting Feynman stories that I will ever get to know, I come across yet another one that makes me smile and shake my head. I wonder if there are any left after reading this book :)
The Most Personally Satisfying of All the Feynman Books.......2002-08-06
Divided into seven sections (The Early Years, At Los Alamos, The Cornell Years, The Research Physicist at Caltech, The Teacher at Caltech, The Public Physicist and Consultant, and Feynman--The Man), this fine book presents Richard Feynman as he was seen by those closest to him--his friends and colleagues. To their credit, they present him as they knew him, the qualities with the flaws.
The book is especially successful in communicating Feynman's way of thinking, the processes he used in attacking problems. The essay entitled "Richard Feynman and the Connection Machine" by W. Daniel Hills is notably successful in this regard, and by itself justifies the purchase of the book. I found it especially interesting that Feynman was fascinated, as I am, by the potential of cellular automata for modeling fluids. Readers with the same interest should also consider purchasing Seek! by Rudy Rucker.
Five or so essays by other physicists who knew Feynman contain mathematics that is proably beyond the ability of the average reader (certainly mine), but even these contain gems of insight that reward readers who wade through them.
All in all, a most satisfying experience.

Amusing anecdotes, touching tributes, and glimpses into the private life of a genius who was also extremely human and persevered through very painful personal problems to help create the atomic bomb while his wife was seriously ill, yet keeping his spirits up and his sense of humor. Never a person to rest on his laurels Feynman is shown in this book as a person who listened intently to other people's theories, no matter how odd they sounded and never assumed anything was right or wrong until he worked it out for himself from first principles. It's all here, his life, his work, his friends, family and colleagues - but most of all his spirit.
