A primer and guide for the home-based business owner.......1998-10-13

Money-Smart Secrets is an thorough guide for both new and experienced small business owners. The book is particularly suited for home-based, small businesses, but the principals are applicable to any size business.

The book provides concise business tips on budgeting, taxes, family vs. business balances, common sense, fee setting, and hiring. While none of the topics, fortunately, is covered exhaustively, the information provided is adequate for most people and serves as a good basis for discussing issues with a business advisor.

The most enjoyble part of the book is the practical discussion of topics in plain English -- eg, basing spending decisions on after-tax dollars. The book is obviously written from the experiences of a business owner. The most important tip, emphasized many times, is taking vacations. This may sound like an odd tip for a money-smart (not to be equated with cheap) guide, but vacations are an extremely necessary part of running your own business. This type of practical advice lends credibility to the book.

What I did not like: -- too much emphasis on home-based businesses -- some topics seemed to contain minor errors (computers and IRAs)

Many of us think that we are good at dealing with office dilemmas but when it actually happens to us we are at odds end and so I have immense praise for this work.

Charles E. Watson, Ph.D., describes a variety of problems that can occur at work and tells you how “smart people” deal with them effectively. By smart, he means “good,” his point being that good is smart. He organizes his management-oriented scenarios according to a series of themes that highlight the best policies to adopt, such as sticking to your principles, accurately weighing your options and seeking to do what’s right, not what’s popular. The book mixes behavioral tips with solutions to problems, emphasizing the need to be trustworthy and responsible and to follow the path of morality and integrity. Sometimes the book seems scattered, since the author distances the solutions from the dilemmas by dropping tips in between them, but the point and purpose survive this wrinkle. Since we at [web address]— like most of you — find it pretty easy to advocate goodness, truth and fair dealing, we liked Watson’s approach. Funny how doing the right thing turns out to be practical.

When Stupid People Get Book Deals........2001-03-31

Wow. I never thought I'd get a chance to write a negative review of a book, because my ability to pick personal winners has served me so well in the past. However, I caught this hardcover on sale and now I know why it was so cheap: it's terrible.

The format is basic: a dilemma, one or more tips, and a solution. Some of these dilemmas are so obvious that you wonder if the 'smart people' in the title is just a trap for large egos.

The tips are likewise obvious and of little help, but the maddening solutions cement my opinion. There is nothing written about how the solution actually worked in reality, so the reader is left to wonder if the dopey tips or solutions were of any use or not.

If I wrote this, I'd be embarassed. In fact, I'm embarassed about reading it, but since it's now part of the bathroom reading material (no more perfect venue than that), it makes for a good laugh or two.

"Some officers could now spend as many as four years at a duty station before getting a new assignment.

The Air Force is now looking for ways to reduce the number of station-to-station moves for officers, particularly for those in the United States.

By extending the average assignment length for an officer from three years to four years, the Air Force believes it can reduce the number of yearly officer PCS moves. Any moves occurring before four years would primarily be for professional development reasons only, said Lt. Gen. Roger A. Brady, deputy chief of staff for manpower and personnel.

"We don't necessarily want to move people around as quickly as we may have in the past, if there is not a developmental reason for that," he said. "And there is a lot of development that can take place in your first few years of service, wherever you are."

The general said that for many young officers, lieutenants in particular, the greatest professional development comes from gaining expertise and experience at one stable location. For higher-ranking officers, professional development comes from attending schools or by taking a command position. Real professional development, the general said, does not come from simply moving to a new assignment.

"We have always been a force that wanted to develop people, and part of developing people is to give them different opportunities," he said. "But if you are not careful, you can confuse movement with development. So what we are looking at are policies that might create moves that are not necessarily related to development."

General Brady also said fewer moves for officers will put less stress on their families by allowing children to stay in a single school for a longer time and by allowing spouses to find more stable careers.

While the change to PCS policy will mostly affect officers inside the continental United States, it will also affect officers stationed overseas, especially at those assigned to European bases.

"We find that some of our traditional overseas assignments... are perhaps as stable as (in the Continental United States,) and so it begs the question as to whether or not you really need to have that disparity in how you manage units," he said.

Manning overseas units at higher levels increases PCS moves and the costs associated with them. The Air Force will now be more amenable to extending officers that want to stay longer at an overseas tour and will look closer than it has in the past at officers who want to shorten their overseas tours, General Brady said.

The Air Force has other reasons for limiting the number of officer PCS moves. One of those reasons is recouping the cost of the moves and applying that funding in other places.

"We have a budgetary issues in a lot of areas: fighting the global war on terror, high ops tempo, ageing aircraft fleets and growing manpower costs," the general said.

General Brady said more effective management of officer moves will better help their professional development, and will also free up funding so it can be applied to winning the war on terror and to recapitalizing ageing Air Force aircraft."

All 3 books from Standard and Poors (the S&P 500, the mid-cap 400, and the small-cap 600) are fantastic resources. You get the last 10 years of financial data for each company (those that have been around that long), including pre-computed values for things like profit margin, return on equity, debt-to-equity, and other ratios that are essential to making value-based investment decisions. Note that these are reference books, not "how to" books.

The Caitanya Caritamrta is an early-seventeenth-century Bengali and Sanskrit biography of the great saint and Vaisnava leader Caitanya (1486–1533 c.e.), by the poet and scholar Krsnadasa, who has been given by Bengali tradition the title Kaviraja—"Prince of Poets." The text is of interest to theologians (Caitanya was, in Krsnadasa's view, an androgyne of Krsna and Radha), philosophers (his theory was that aesthetic and religious experience are much the same in kind), historians of religion (the movement that Caitanya inspired has encompassed the great part of the eastern Indian subcontinent, and Krsnadasa has some interesting observations on his own times), and appreciators of literature (in Krsnadasa's very long poem are embedded some lyric gems).

This book is extraordinary. The multiple prefaces and introductions alone are worthy of five stars. I find the translations of the text itself to be well-balanced.

Scholarly Translation of a Seminal Religious Text.......2000-12-15

Dimock and Stewart's translation of the Caitanya Caritamrta (The Nectar of the Acts of Caitanya) is a readable and extremely well-researched edition of the biography of Sri Caitanya, a 16th century Bengali ascetic who is believed by Gaudiya Vaisnavas to have been the androgynous dual incarnation of Krsna and Radha. The lengthy introduction and notes on translation provide readers unfamiliar with the tradition with all the background they need to appreciate the layers of meaning hidden in the text and the narrative strategies of Krsnadasa that come across so well in this translation. For more background, read Dimock's 1966 book, "The Place of the Hidden Moon". a true classic in the literature of South Asian studies. Highly recommended.
