It's Time.......2000-01-08
This important book examines the "stories" of 300 women who have somehow overcome all manner of barriers in a work environment to achieve success in their career. Swiss duly acknowledges that many of these barriers are unintentional. In this instance, the problem presumably is one of ignorance. OK, but we all know that there are many in the work environment (intimidated females as well as self-serving males) who are well aware of these barriers and either tolerate them or defend them. In this instance, the problem is one of attitude. Whatever, many barriers are illegal; the remaining barriers are dumb (because precious human assets are underutilized) and/or punitive (because someone feels threatened). The 300 women who are "on the leading edge of change" are to be commended for their achievement. But let's not lose sight of a key point: Most (if not all) of them should not have had to experience the resistance, at times the hostility and perhaps even the abuse, they did.
This book (published in 1996) is based on the results of a survey in which 300 women participated. When "Taking Stock", Swiss shares several facts about women at work, at least in 1996:
* The salary gap mirrors the gender gap.
* Moving women into the managerial pipeline has done little to advance deserving ones into senior management.
* Gender, not talent, is often the deciding factor in who is offered committee leadership or the golden client.
* Progressive policies on paper are meaningless in the absence of support from top management and line supervisors.
* Sexual harassment continues to be a silent partner in maintaining an unsupportive work enviroment for women.
* Gender bias, not parenting responsibilities, is the factor most likely to slow a woman's advancement.
Granted, since 1996, there has been substantial improvement in at least some of these areas and men in the workplace deserve at least a portion of the credit. However, there should be zero tolerance of any illegal or inappropriate behavior in the work environment. Period. During the course of Women Breaking Through, Swiss focuses on "10 obstacles at work." Based on the results from the survey, she offers equally specific suggestions as to how to eliminate those barriers.
At some point, hopefully very soon, there will no longer be a need for a book such as this. But our society is nowhere near that point yet. There have been so many important technological "break-throughs" in the business world just within the past few years, most notably the WWW. If we can develop highly sophisticated machines, why can't we also develop highly sophisticated people for whom the behavior Swiss and others have cited is unconscionable? It's time.
Great book for every woman that wants to move up!.......1998-02-14
I loved this book, I wish I had it when I started my career 12 years ago. The advice in the book can be used as your little "female executive mentor" guide. Men executives should also read this to better understand how some of their behavior or comments are taken by their female employees.

Book Description
The continuing uproar over top executive pay packages in American companies calls attention to an even larger and more important issue: in general, do we compensate highly educated people in the United States in ways that serve the best interests of the nation? Are some people paid too much and others too little? What effect do differences in earnings have on the career choices of the talented? Do we pay executives and professionals in ways that motivate them to work hard at the right things?
In the most revealing study yet undertaken of compensation practices in the fields of business, law, medicine, higher education, teaching, and government, Derek Bok, renowned for his extensive writings on professional ethics, law, and labor relations, argues persuasively that the compensation paid to top executives, lawyers, and doctors cannot be justified, nor is there evidence that huge bonuses and other financial incentives motivate them to do better work. Moreover, Bok asserts, the lucrative rewards of Wall Street, the elite law firms, and the medical specialties act as a magnet to deprive poorly paid but vitally important teaching and public service professions of desperately needed talent.
Bok argues that as our economy becomes more complex, the demand for able, highly educated people increases constantly and takes on greater and greater importance. Losing our most talented individuals to the lure of high compensation will affect the very nature of health care, the progress of the economy, the effectiveness of public policy, the pursuit of justice, and the quality of education in America.
President Clinton's tax proposals to curb excessive executive pay now before Congress are only a first step toward reform. Bok concludes that as we enter a new period of national development, we must rethink our deepest values, motivations, and priorities -- reflected in our compensation practices -- in order to better serve America's long-term interests.

A Real "Who Cares" Sort of Book.......2000-05-01
While I bought this book some time ago, I just got around to reading it. A fan of Bok, you must wonder about why he wrote this book and why the publisher published it. Must have been "star struck". Talks about why lawyers make more than others and makes judgements about who is more valuable than who. Of course college professors and teachers come out on top--why not janitors and iron workers? I hauled this book around on several plane trips and was wishing I would lose it in the seat pocket.
This is a guy people would have listened to. He could have built an interesting and important model about executive pay and been instrumental in influencing how organizations value to top talent they have. The book needed a severe editing job. It shows that people you expect a lot from just don't come through consistently.
A valuable and perceptive work.......1999-08-10
This book delves into a very critical aspect of current American society; namely, the exorbitant salaries of America's executives and high-level professionals, and the growing disparity between them and the rest of the people, especially the most underprivileged members of society. Although the findings cited in the book might suffer from methodological shortcomings, they are justified and confirmed by any person's observations of modern America. For instance, many of our corporate executives and lawyers own $1,000 suits, $60,000 cars, and have kids in private schools (not to mention enjoy $100 lunches on a daily basis) while there are countless homeless and welfare ridden persons who have very little mobility, regardless of work-ethic. There are clearly unjust differences in the amount of wealth and resources available to the most privileged members of American society and the poorest ones (also becoming known as the "under class"). This book is a valuable resource for anyone concerned with crucial societal issues that face the US in the years to come.

Book Description
The central theme of Twining's book is that law is a marvellous subject of study, but to do justice to its potential requires an enlargement of vision, multiple perspectives, and a radical reappraisal of the role, culture, and practices of law schools. Treating theory, education, scholarship, publishing, and professional practice as complementary activities, the author explores the history, philosophy, and practical problems of attempts to broaden the study of law in a disciplined way. He draws upon his personal experience of law schools throughout the common law world and his special knowledge of jurisprudence, evidence, torts and legal method to examine a wide range of topics in depth. These include, for example, the nature and tasks of legal theory, different kinds of legal literature, and access to legal education and the profession. This provocative and readable book will appeal to all those with an interest in the roles of legal theory, law schools, and lawyers in a changing world.

Product Description
Green China emerges as a biennial book associated with a permanently updated website - Greenchina.eu - with the purpose of being able to contribute to a mutual understanding between the Chinese and the Westerners, namely the Europeans, regarding two decisive subjects: the role of the countryside in this new China, and how the country will be able to influence the world in a positive way, both seen under a constructive ecological perspective.
The main attention will be on rural development, considering the huge importance of the countryside: around 57 % of the Chinese citizens live there. This dramatic influence of rural life instead of being a barrier for the country's development is a great opportunity for its sustainable future, if rural development is to be well planned and implemented, with a widely informed ecological vision.
Green China selects the good efforts in the country to achieve such a development with the contribution of writers from China and Europe.
It also includes an extensive photographic report of a beautiful rural region. In this issue it is about Yangshuo: the legendary door to China's countryside.

Book Description
We can do better than just slow down global warming. We can fix it. This book shows how. Increasing the organic matter in the world's soils is the only practical and cost-effective way to stop the worldwide catastrophe of global warming. By switching to sustainable energy sources that don't add carbon to the atmosphere, we can keep global warming stopped. Yet these proven solutions are poorly understood, scattered among specialties, and surrounded by confusion and conflict. Priority One shows how to combine these proven solutions so we can stabilize the world's climate, bolster lagging economies, and enhance human health. But we need to act now, before this one-time opportunity is gone.
Customer Reviews:
Interesting ideas, some inaccuracies.......2007-08-09
The idea of sequestering carbon in organic soils is interesting, particularly the idea of no-till farming which requires much less energy and chemicals than "modern" farming methods. Understanding carbon cycles in agriculture and forestry is currently a subject of intense study. The sheer quantity of land involved makes this an important component of any plan to reduce carbon emissions. The book is worth reading for the author's willingness to consider unorthodox ideas and methods. I doubt his assumptions regarding the ease of disposal of nuclear waste, in light of the mess we are now trying to clean up next to the Columbia River in Washington State. This, and other leaps of logic, seemed to conflict with reason. Glean the unique ideas, but you are better off reading scientific papers in peer-reviewed journals for accurate information.
The only complete book on the problem.......2007-03-11
An intrepid, thorough exploration of the issue of global warming, focused on proven solutions. Al Gore and others have done great work in bringing the problem to the awareness of many, but if our only antidote is restricting emissions, we have no way of reducing excess atmospheric carbon, no way of solving the problem. The message becomes, "let's wreck the planet more slowly."
If that message seems lacking or indifferent to you, then you owe it to yourself and your descendants to read this book.
The soil contains twice the carbon that the atmosphere does, in organic matter. Generations of moldboard plowing, nitrogen fertilizer, and other agrochemicals have put this carbon into the atmosphere to a far greater extent than most realize. There are huge potentials, based on solidly proven and economically sound techniques, for reversing this flow, for removing the excess carbon from the atmosphere and stabilizing it in soil organic matter. Perennial grasses are key, and yield tremendous auxiliary benefits. The 8 percent or so of the earth's surface that is agricultural and pastureland soils, over which we have great influence through food and farm decisions and policies, could remove the excess atmospheric carbon fairly quickly.
Many have recognized the potential of increasing soil carbon to mitigate or stop global warming. But it has been a difficult concept for an urbanized population to comprehend. It is far easier to focus on emissions from smokestacks and exhaust pipes. Allan Yeomans has been in agriculture most of his life, and he does an excellent and thorough job of explaining soil carbon and other relevant topics to nonexperts.
Yeomans points to biofuels and nuclear energy as the solution to continued high energy needs. Again, these are not speculative potentials, but solidly proven. His comparison of the risks of nuclear to those of coal and oil are fascinating and revealing.
This book contains provocative, inconvenient truths. It is NOT conventional thinking. The climate change discussion will never be the same.
Viable Solutions Instead of Platitudes--In Public Service.......2007-03-06
This 492 page book is the work of a a seriious pioneer in Australia who decided that the public could use a serious book with serious solutions, instead of the range of platitudes, fear-mongering, or outright misrepresentation (energy companies like Exxon lying about the facts).
It is an over-size book that ships from the USA and reached me in a few days instead of the 4-6 weeks that Amazon shows. It is very well laid out, two-column, 12 chapters, listing 50 specific local, national, and global strategies that can be implemented today. I regard this book as the graduate school equivalent of "50 Simple Things You Can Do to Save the Earth."
What I find especially powerful about this book is that it focuses less on the industrial undermining of the atmosphere, and more on agriculture, which suffers from a range of problems including top soil rather than deep root farming, very unwise use of toxic chemcials that pollute aquifers (while failing to separate animal feces from water feeding into spinach fields, as the US found to its horror recently).
The author also does a superb job of pointing out that global warming is an ENERGY problem as much as it is an emissions problem. It is down-right nuts for the US to contront Iran over the need for nuclear energy while pretending that the US is not the primary proliferator of both nuclear technologies and the weapons of death. Safe nuclear energy as well as many forms of renewalbe solar and wind energy, and portable energy such as hydrogen from water using a renewable energy to make it effective, are all with us now.
Bottom line: this book should be in every educational program that seeks to understand solutions, and this book should be required reading for everyone that respects "Inconvenient Truth." This book is the book you read after you agree with Al Gore, and recognize that he is summarizing, very eloquently, the problem, without actually providing any solutions.
Winston Churchill, God-Father of the English-speaking peoples, is smiling down at Allan Yeomans, the author and self-financed publisher of this volume--he's fighting the real war for our future, rather than the false war against terrorism.
A book like this would normally sell for US$75 or so, but the author, as a public service, ordered it to be priced close to cost plus Amazon commision plus shipping from Australia, and only recently found a US distributor so the book could be listed in the world's single greatest library catalog, Amazon.com.

Customer Reviews:
The first tourist guide to Florida.......2005-07-31
This is the book that started the popular rush to the Land of Flowers - Harriet Beecher Stowe's 1874 essays covering everything from picnics up Julington Creek to the mass destruction of Florida's beautiful birds for their plumage. Although Mrs. Stowe was concealing her real reasons for coming south every year from 1866 to 1884 and there were other essays too dangerous to publish in this volume, it is still a treasure trove for modern sojourners to the Sunshine State. No wonder 14,000 - 15,000 people flocked south in the first year after it was published (1875) and they haven't stopped since!
If you come to Florida and get stuck in traffic, you can blame Harriet Beecher Stowe and this book.
