5 out of 5 stars Nothing like It!.......2005-03-29

The Good Corporate Citizen: A Practical Guide is a very detailed and complete handbook on corporate philanthropy for those corporations that that wish to make a meaningful contribution to the improvement of their communities, but it is extremely useful for individuals and family foundations that want to make a difference as well. Ms. Rubenstein has done an excellent job of raising the questions that donors must answer in this extremely complex area of philanthropy. And the book is just what the title says - it's an extremely practical guide with lots of examples and helpful detail.

    5 out of 5 stars A Handbook to Keep.......2004-09-25

What I appreciate about "The Good Corporate Citizen" is that it is an engaging blend of the very practical ("Why Conduct a Corporate Citizenship Program?" because among other things, customers "are likely to continue doing business with the company") as well as the ethical and near spiritual. In the latter category, eight steps on the ladder of charity are identified from the work of a medieval Jewish wiseman, Rabbi Maimonides. At the bottom level you can do charity with the zeal of Scrooge; at the top, you can help set up conditions such that people can avoid charity in the first place. Author Rubenstein deftly weaves modern-day parallels to all steps. The book is really a handbook in that it provides straightforward information on difficult subjects such as evaluating nonprofits on how they have made use of grants to providing a lot of useful sample forms on budgets, grant approval and "regret" letters as well as letters of agreement with recipient organizations and the basic elements of a corporate giving plan. Rubenstein also introduces new concepts, such as "social entrepreneurism" which is modestly revolutionizing approaches to making higher education more accessible to underprivileged groups in the US (www.collegesummit.org). She tantalizes with brief but insightful discussions on "quality of life" matters such as international and environmental philanthropy. One has a sense that she has much more to say on such subjects and, given the increasingly interdependence of the world in which we live, hopefully her next volume will treat these in greater depth.

5 out of 5 stars Navigating Your Corporate Philanthropy Journey.......2004-08-31

At a time when corporate philanthropy is rapidly changing, Doris' guide is helpful in navigating your journey. She provides smart and insightful analysis for corporate decision-makers and fundraisers seeking support. The Good Corporate Citizen helps the business executive develop a practical plan for giving and helps the nonprofit executive better understand the motivations and needs of companies wanting to be engaged in the community they serve.

We bought this book for our financial investments advisory firm, to create a good citizenship program; but we found that the information it contains is equally useful for some of our clients who are considering starting private family foundations. The lessons offered for most policy areas can apply for either kind of business: for profit and non-profit.

Every executive and business owner should read this book! It's important for today's leaders to recognize the vital role that business plays not only in our community but how it's relationship with community affects the bottom line. Book Description

The advanced state of computer networking and telecommunications technology makes it possible to view computers as parts of a global computation platform, sharing their resources in terms of hardware, software and data. The possibility of exploiting the resources on a global scale has given rise to a new paradigm - the mobile computation paradigm - for computation in large scale distributed networks. The key characteristic of this paradigm is to give programmers control over the mobility of code or active computations across the network by providing appropriate language features. The dynamism and flexibility offered by mobile computation however, brings about a set of problems, the most challenging of which are relevant to safety and security. Several recent experiences prove that identifying the causes of these problems usually requires a rigorous investigation using formal methods. Functional languages are known for their well-understood computational models and their amenability to formal reasoning. They also have strong expressive power due to higher-order features. Functions can flow from one program point to another as other first-class values. These facts suggest that functional languages can provide the core of mobile computation language. Functions that represent mobile agents and formal systems for reasoning about functional programs can be further exploited to reason about the behavior of agents. Mobile Computation with Functions explores distributed computation with languages which adopt functions as the main programming abstraction and support code mobility through the mobility of functions between remote sites. It aims to highlight the benefits of using languages of this family in dealing with the challenges of mobile computation. The possibility of exploiting existing static analysis techniques suggests that having functions at the core of mobile code language is a particularly apt choice. A range of problems which have impact on the safety, security and performance are discussed. It is shown that types extended with effects and other annotations can capture a significant amount of information about the dynamic behavior of mobile functions, and offer solutions to the problems under investigation. This book includes a survey of the languages Concurrent ML, Facile and PLAN which inherit the strengths of the functional paradigm in the context of concurrent and distributed computation. The languages which are defined in the subsequent chapters have their roots in these languages. Mobile Computation with Functions is designed to meet the needs of a professional audience composed of researchers and practitioners in industry and graduate level students in Computer Science.

      Book Description

The 38 chapters of this Field Manual provide the tools required for planning experiments with entomopathogens and their implementation in the field. Basic tools include chapters on the theory and practice of microbial control agents, statistical design of experiments, equipment and application strategies. The major pathogen groups are covered in individual chapters (virus, bacteria, protozoa, fungi, nematodes). Subsequent chapters deal with the impact of naturally occurring and introduced exotic pathogens and inundative application of microbial control agents. The largest section of the Manual is composed of 21 chapters on the application and evaluation of entomopathogens in a wide range of agricultural, forest, domestic and aquatic habitats. Mites and slugs broaden the scope of the book. Supplementary techniques and media for follow-up laboratory studies are described. Three final chapters cover the evaluation of Bt transgenic plants, resistance to insect pathogens and strategies to manage it, and guidelines for evaluating the effects of MCAs on nontarget organisms.
Readership: Researchers, graduate students, practitioners of integrated pest management, regulators, those doing environmental impact studies. The book is a stand-alone reference, but is also complementary to the laboratory-oriented Manual of Techniques in Insect Pathology and similar comprehensive texts.

This is an excellent book, with lots of up-to-date information which will be of great use to those interested in microbial control of insect pests. It serves as a complement to Lacey's "Manual of Techniques in Insect Pathology." Unfortunately, the book is ridiculously priced, which will greatly limit its availability. Imagine spending over [price] in Latin America or Africa for ONE book. It won't happen.

        Book Description

The Field Manual of Techniques in Invertebrate Pathology is designed to provide background and instruction on a broad spectrum of techniques and their use in the evaluation of entomopathogens in the field. The second edition of the Field Manual provides updated information and includes two additional chapters and 12 new contributors. The intended audience includes researchers, graduate students, practitioners of integrated pest management (IPM), regulators and those conducting environmental impact studies of entomopathogens. Although it can function as a stand alone reference, the Field Manual is complementary to the laboratory oriented Manual of Techniques in Insect Pathology and to comprehensive texts in insect pathology.

The Editors have structured the 40 chapters of the Field Manual into 10 sections to provide the tools required for planning experiments with entomopathogens and their implementation in the field. The basic tools include chapters on the theory and practice of application of microbial control agents (MCAs) (Section I), statistical considerations in the design of experiments (Section II), and three chapters on application equipment and strategies (Section III). Section IV includes individual chapters on the major pathogen groups (virus, bacteria, microsporidia, fungi, and nematodes) and special considerations for their evaluation under field conditions. This section sets the stage for subsequent chapters on the impact of naturally occurring and introduced exotic pathogens and inundative application of MCAs. Twenty-three chapters on the application and evaluation of MCAs in a wide variety of agricultural, forest, domestic and aquatic habitats comprise Section VII of the Field Manual. In addition to insect pests, the inclusion of mites and slugs broadens the scope of the book. Most of the chapters in this section include step by step instructions on handling of inoculum, design of field experiments and experimental plots and application and assessment of efficacy of dozens of MCAs. Several of these chapters include supplementary techniques and media for conducting follow up laboratory studies for confirmation of infection, determination of persistence, etc. The three final chapters include: special consideration for evaluation of Bt transgenic plants (Section VIII); resistance to insect pathogens and strategies to manage resistance (Section IX); and guidelines for evaluating effects of MCAs on nontarget organisms (Section X).

Due to uncertainty regarding the future availability of organophosphate and other conventional chemical insecticides, MCAs will play increasingly important roles in IPM. The Field Manual will provide researchers and IPM practitioners with techniques and practical guidance for the study and optimal use of MCAs in a variety of settings.

Why do women stabilize our societies? Why can we enjoy and understand Shakespeare? Why are fruitflies uniform? Why do omnivorous eating habits aid our survival? Why is Mona Lisa’s smile beautiful? – Is there any answer to these questions? This book shows that the statement: "weak links stabilize complex systems" holds the answers to all of the surprising questions above. The author (recipient of several distinguished science communication prizes) uses weak (low affinity, low probability) interactions as a thread to introduce a vast variety of networks from proteins to ecosystems. Many people, from Nobel Laureates to high-school students have helped to make the book understandable to all interested readers. This unique book and the ideas it develops will have a significant impact on many, seemingly diverse, fields of study.

5 out of 5 stars Primer on real-life networks with a theme .......2007-02-02

If you ever needed another good reason to value your grandmother even more, you'll find the answer in "Weak links".

Structurally, his book starts with an exposition on network theory and
terminology, then the application and discussion of these concepts to
real-life complex systems on many scales and applied to many domains (physical, natural, technological, social). His main point is, as the reviewer noted above, that 'weak' links (weak: additional/removal does not statistically affect the average of some metric) stabilize systems.

The book has thorough footnotes, one can delve as deep as one would like
into the professional papers. In addition, Csermely is an honest scholar - he shows his hands when there is mere speculation (you have to see the book's unique pictograms to appreciate the effects)

After pouring through several alternatives, I have adopted this book as a
textbook for my Science of Networks class (I'm CS fac at an elite US liberal arts school), and I recommend it to anyone without hesitation for a readable, and learned exposition.

I only have two or three caveats from a specialist's point of view: The
phenomenological discovery of power laws in complex systems is not unusual
and may not be evidence of any SF properties. Scale-free is an abused
term, and I wish the controversy about it were explained a bit more. Also, from a modelling point of view, I wish Doyle and Carlson's work on HOT systems were discussed in more depth.

But these are minor points, relatively speaking. This is a gem of a book:
erudite, humane, funny, accessible and thoroughly fascinating. On every
page, there are delights that lead down new intellectual paths.

Csermely did a great service to pedagogy and to this budding science with
this magisterial survey. Outstanding in its ease of access for intelligent
undergraduates and commendable for intellectual honesty - I wish more
books (textbooks and otherwise) were written this way.

5 out of 5 stars Weak Links Stabilize Complex Systems.......2006-05-13

            It is an intriguing concept.

Weak links, invisible in many networks, are critical to its stability. In this book, Peter Csermely shows that all networks, from the universe to molecules are governed by the same principles. Regardless of the system -- atoms, cells, companies, web pages or countries -- surprisingly, the weak links stabilize each.

Csermely, a professor at Semmelweis University in Budapest, a former Fogarty Fellow at Harvard University, is a molecular chaperones specialist. In 2003, he became fascinated by the concept of affinity -- a network's stabilizing components of must have weak links to the other components. These weak links act as hubs. Attack the hubs; disrupt the network.

Csermely demonstrates the concept hold true in field after field. The professor begins his study with a discussion of the Granovetter study of a job search and then proceeds to describe network dynamics. By chapter four, the reader is ready to be introduced to the concept of weak links as universal stabilizers. Then, the professor conducts a network tour ranging from macromolecules to the planet earth. Finally he ends with a discussion of weak links, stability landscapes and game theory.

Surprisingly, his book is understandable, even to non-academics. It is loaded with gems that can be applied to the reader's networks and relationships.

This is not a book I would have ever picked up on my own. Thankfully, Professor Csermely sent me an advanced copy. It is a unique book that takes a thorough look at an intriguing concept.

              Book Description

A concise, comprehensive introduction to the topic of statistical physics of combinatorial optimization, bringing together theoretical concepts and algorithms from computer science with analytical methods from physics. The result bridges the gap between statistical physics and combinatorial optimization, investigating problems taken from theoretical computing, such as the vertex-cover problem, with the concepts and methods of theoretical physics.
The authors cover rapid developments and analytical methods that are both extremely complex and spread by word-of-mouth, providing all the necessary basics in required detail. Throughout, the algorithms are shown with examples and calculations, while the proofs are given in a way suitable for graduate students, post-docs, and researchers. Ideal for newcomers to this young, multidisciplinary field.

              Book Description

When physicists and others construct models to explain the phenomena and laws of nature, do those models actually simulate what's really out there in the world, or do they only synthesize the way we think the world is? And how does our cultural upbringing affect the way we think about the world? In this far-reaching yet penetrating book, two world-class physicists, one born and raised in the West, the other in the Far East, examine these and many other intriguing questions not yet resolved by modern scientists.

5 out of 5 stars The book survives a world of only questions........2003-09-02

a must read book for beginners like me.
The sheer vastness of topics these guys cover amazes you. It might at times make u uncover the old physics fundamentals books, if u wish to really understand an off-hand remark by an imaginary academician.

In case U have an appetite for questions & moreover, if U can digest many conflicting ideas, all struggling at the same time in ur stomach, go for it! And that's an important quality required in the reader. Because the book survives discussions with no describable results. There are observations, questions, explanations, irony of those explanations, further explanations & further ironies of these explanations. There are no ready-made solutions. The book makes u think.

I rate it cent percent. And I really think, more books of this kind are required, which try to break the notion of fixed iron bars around physics ideas.

2 out of 5 stars Great Premise For a Science Book, But Fails To Deliver.......2002-10-22

There is much to commend in this book. The sheer scope and breadth of subjects it covers are amazing. The premise of the book is interesting and novel: a fictional version of Plato's Academy debating the issues at hand in a series of questions and answers. However, many issues are covered too glibly, especially ones dealing with quantum mechanics and unified theories. Another problem is Tony Rothman's prose stylization of the material. George Sudarshan, the scientist of the writing duo, does an admirable job of explaining the properties, but much of the information is mangled by Rothman's antic writing and examples. It makes the book seem gimmicky, and much of it, truthfully, is bad, ornery writing that almost single-handedly hampers the book's service to inform the reader. The book has its merits of covering a vast amount of scientific knowledge, and is even entertaining to read in spurts. But if you're looking for books that deal with subjects more in-depth and appropriately, or those that are written in more truthful, elegant prose, look elsewhere.

              5 out of 5 stars 10 star book.......2001-08-08

Similar books by Hawking, Penrose, Capra and others usually present their authors' views. This book also tackles the fundamental questions (Is reality describable? Is math describing it? Symmetries? Arrow of time? etc) but also presents notable opinions from other physicists and philosophers. This way the reader gets a great overview.

5 out of 5 stars Brilliant and Thought Provoking........2000-07-18

This book is undoubtedly a landmark in the history of scientific literature. Written by two world class physicists steeped in Wetsern and Eastern thought and cultures, the book achieves a unique synthesis of brilliant and thought provoking ideas on an astonishing range of scientific questions.

One marvels at how the authors offer penetrating analyses on some of the most difficult and fundamental scientific questions of our time, dispassionately presenting every point of view, and yet stopping short of imposing their own dogmas.

Lucidly written and liberally illustrated with figures, this book will tantalize both the scientifc novice and the expert, presenting its vast possibilities on the one hand, while simultaneously exposing its limitations on the other.

This is an extraordinary book and a "must read" for anyone interested in science and philosophy.

4 out of 5 stars Of 'Sphinx' and other substantive issues.......2000-03-06

Thanks to Professors George Sudarshan and Tony Rothman, now I am fully qualified to can carry on an intelligent conversation, for about five minutes, on Particle Physics, the Upanishads, Cosmology, Cosmetology, the Sphinx and 'Zeno Effect', and of course everything else under and above the sun and beyond.

One thing I learned form the book is this and that is, I know now how to look at the Sphinx in a whole new perspective if I ever run into one but I wonder what prompted the authors to bring in the 'Academy' into the mix. Certainly the subject matter was worthy of 'Academy-treatment' but I thought the 'style' lacked 'Hellenic' attributes.

Since Prof. George Sudarshan and I are from the same neck of the woods I hope he doesn't mind if I go along with what I know to be 'certain',

"Existence or nonexistence was not then. The bright region was not,nor the space (vyoman) that is beyond. What encompassed? Where? Under whose protection? What water was there-deep unfathomable?

Death or immortality was not then.

There was no distinction between night and day. That one breathed, windeless, by itself. Other than that there was nothing beyond.

In the beginning there was darkness concealed by darkness. All this was water without distinction. The One that was covered by voidness emerged through the might of the heat of the austerity.

In the beginning, desire, the first seed of mind, arose in That. Poet-seers,searching in their heart with wisdom, found the bond of existence in nonexistence.

Their [visions] ray stretched across [existence and nonexistence]. Perhaps there was a below; perhaps there was an above.

There were givers of seed; there were powers; effort below, self-giving above.

Who knows the truth? Who here will pronounce it whence this birth, whence this creation? The Gods appeard afterward, with the creations of this [world]. Who then knows whence it arose? Whence this creation arose, whether it created itself or whether it did not?

He who looks upon it from the highest space, he surely knows, or may be He knows not..."

              -Rig Veda X.129.1-7

Seriously though, the book is certainly a brave and worthy attempt in tackling complex scientific, mystic, religious and other issues facing the human mind. Though a difficult read (for me) I thoroughly enjoyed the book and appreciate the authors efforts in making the complex subject matter easy on the brain.

Having just finished reading the book I am wondering what to read next! I think I pass on Deepak Chopra but Stephen Hawkings and Prof. Amit Goswami sound interesting...naaah I think I go with O.V.Vijayan. OK 'The Legends of Khasak' it is.
