Customer Reviews:
If you need to improve, you need this book.......2000-05-12
Not only is this a great book for professionals who do a lot of public speaking, but it is also great for those of us who only rarely have the opportunity to speak or give presentations.
The level of nervousness is much higher for those who do not consistently practice speaking, so they need a lot of practical advice that they can put into practice immediately, and they also need only that advice that has already been proven to work well. This book provides both.
I discovered this book before my last presentation and my delivery was immediately improved by using the practical tips Mr. jeary provided in the book. If you need to improve and you need it in a hurry, you need this book.
Outstanding!.......2000-01-28
As a professional trainer for a major U.S. web site design software tool company, I fly all over the country teaching our nation's teachers about our tools.
I wanted to improve my presentation / speaking skills and happened to come across Mr. Jery's book.
It was just the thing I needed. Why do I rate it outstanding? Because I have put many of Tony's ideas into practise, and they work!
There is so much good advice in the book (love the stuff about having a "conversation" with the attendees, not lecturing them) here that I am now going to pass it along to many of my assocaites I work with.
I am so impressed with the book, I'd like to now sign up for one of his seminars!
Tony, if you read this, were do I sign up!
Good job!
Yours,
Richard

Robert Reid explores the history of the Net from a business perspective--how a communication system nominally built for national defense and in effect taken over by education and research came to erupt as the most important medium since television--and with greater speed and intensity than any communication medium ever. Each chapter examines the Web's business development through the story of one of its pioneers--including Marc Andreeson of Netscape, Mark Pesce of VRML, Jerry Yang of Yahoo!, Halsey Minor of CNET, and more. Its an exciting story of frantic activity in a whirlwind environment and of the individuals who rode the tornado to success.
Book Description
"A terrific book that captures the explosion of creativity and business evolution at the center of the Internet phenomenon. A tantalizing mix of diverse players with utopian visions, animated by equal parts aggression and delight. A true saga of our time."-James F. Moore author, The Death of Competition; Chairman, Geo Partners Research Inc.
Architects of the Web presents the dynamic history of the Web's creation and evolution-as well as its emergence as a dynamic business tool-through revealing profiles of its architects, the brilliant minds who have helped thrust the Web onto desktops and corporate agendas around the world. A diverse, ambitious group, the architects of the Web are:
* Marc Andreessen, Netscape
* Ariel Poler, I/PRO
* Rob Glaser, Progressive Networks Andrew Anker, HotWired
* Kim Polese, Marimba
* Halsey Minor, C/NET
* Mark Pesce, VRML
* Jerry Yang, Yahoo!
Customer Reviews:
Some of the background, but not the full story.......2003-11-18
It has been a few months since I read the book, just never getting back to writing a review. For whatever reason tonight is the night.
I found it to be an interesting book, to learn the firsthand accounts of some of the important architects of the WWW; and then some not so important. Opening my eyes to what was really going on in other parts of the world while I was just barely learning the WWW.
The reading was for the most part smooth, and easy read actually. If you want to learn part of where we have come from over a weekend go ahead and pick this up.
A pre-dot bomb period piece.......2003-10-31
Reid's book can safely be characterized as a pre-dot bomb period piece. He writes the history of the Web as the history of making money in wonderously new ways. The actual Ponzi-scheme techniques by which much of the Web's money poured in (for a while) are not explored. But that is fine. Internet historians will refer to this now primary document as financial and cultural historians refer to the U2-can-get-rich books of the late 1920s -- that is, the ones written before the Great Crash of October, 1929.
A ghastly revisionist history for businessmen.......1999-04-05
This book is a revisionist history which attempts to give the credit for the development of the web to businessmen, and almost completely ignores the people who actually designed the architecture of the web. Even Tim Berners-Lee gets only a token mention; and Ted Nelson, who invented hypertext, multimedia and "linking", is completely ignored.
The first chapter tries to credit Netscape with the invention of the web, and pretends that they lead the development of HTML. The truth, of course, is that Netscape has never managed to fully implement any of the HTML standards, let alone improve on them. Most of the HTML "improvements" thought of as Netscape's were defined in HTML 3.0 long before Netscape implemented them via gratuitously incompatible tags.
As the book goes on it gets even worse. CNET and HotWired as architects of the web? Yeah, right, and I suppose the Psychic Friends Network invented the telephone? I'll be generous, and assume that this book happened because some poor soul started believing the nonsense Internet companies put out in their press releases. The alternative is that it's a deliberate attempt to re-write history. Unfortunately, judging from the 'professional' reviews there must be plenty of suckers who actually do think CNET and WIRED magazine invented the web. I wish it was possible to give this book a score of zero; you could learn more about the real history of the web by spending half an hour browsing the W3C web site.
Interesting, Timely, but flawed.......1997-07-21
The main impression you take away from this book is that there are a lot of millionaires in
the Internet world that got there by accident and timing rather than outright brilliance. Written as if Microsoft is a dark malevolent force (which is how it is obviously perceived from the other side), this book goes too far in trying to canonize the newcomers. While many recent books have been written from the " MS is great" side, this counter view can be interesting, but takes many cheap shots. The hardest part of reading this is the horrible editing. You realize that you are noticing constant typos, grammar and layout problems as you go.
In many cases, it looks like a quick spell check was done on dictated text as same sounding words show up totally out of context in their other spelling. This apparently was rushed to the press. The best part of this book is recognizing the significance of the sub-title.
It truly has only been 1,000 days since the Web exploded
An education and entertaining as well........1997-06-14
You learn about the web; what it is and where it
might be going. The introduction by Neil Weintraut is a primer on the facts, figures and
infrastructure of the web and, in itself, is quite worth the reading. The author is an excellent story teller and his documenting of the events in the development of the web is entertaining reading
and is a recounting of real life, as well. Great
reading for professionals as well as surfers of the web.

Book Description
Phosphorus is one of the major nutrients limiting the productivity of terrestrial, wetland and aquatic ecosystems. Over the last decade several research projects were conducted on Florida's ecosystems from state and federal agencies and private industry to address water quality issues, and to develop management practices to control nutrient loads. Phosphorus Biogeochemistry in Sub-Tropical Ecosystems is the first thorough study of the role of phosphorus in ecological health and water quality ever published. Because of its vast and extensively studied ecosystems, Florida has often served as a national laboratory on current and future trends in ecosystem management. The reader will find studies at all levels of biological organization, from the cellular to entire ecological communities. The book is a definitive study of the role and behavior of phosphorus deposition in the upland/wetland/aquatic environment. The papers presented in this book are organized in specific groups: ecological analysis and global issues, biogeochemical transformations, biogeochemical responses, transport processes, phosphorus management, and synthesis. Although Florida's ecosystems are used as a case study, the results presented have global applications.
Book Description
Statistical mechanics is one of the crucial fundamental theories of physics, and in his new book Lawrence Sklar, one of the pre-eminent philosophers of physics, offers a comprehensive, non-technical introduction to that theory and to attempts to understand its foundational elements. Among the topics treated in detail are: probability and statistical explanation, the basic issues in both equilibrium and non-equilibrium statistical mechanics, the role of cosmology, the reduction of thermodynamics to statistical mechanics, and the alleged foundation of the very notion of time asymmetry in the entropic asymmetry of systems in time. The book emphasises the interaction of scientific and philosophical modes of reasoning, and in this way will interest all philosophers of science as well as those in physics and chemistry concerned with philosophical questions. The book could also be read by an informed general reader interested in the foundations of modern science.
Customer Reviews:
Should be read by every student taking stat phys.......2006-09-08
(NB. This book really deserves 4.5 stars.)
Much of my work concerns applying statistical physics in novel contexts. With that in mind, a few years ago I undertook to take a look at foundational issues. Although this book contains few equations, it is sophisticated and clear, and also a page-turner. My copy is jammed with Post-Its serving as placemarkers.
That said, a few more equations and better references/attribution would have been nice. For instance, Sklar mentions a "pantamicrocanonical" ensemble at one point, but he neither elaborates nor gives a usable reference. I have been unable to track down the origin or precise meaning of this term, to my annoyance.
There are biases in coverage as well: most philosophers of statistical physics are (perhaps rightly) preoccupied with the arrow of time. Personally, however, I found the distinction between ergodicity and mixing far more relevant, insightful, and useful. The coverage of information theory and MAXENT is weak. Many people familiar with MAXENT often come to notice some of its limitations, and a more thorough philosophical treatment (incorporating views from e.g., Jaynes to Grad) of the subject would have been welcome.
But all in all, this is an excellent book, and a worthy read. I recommend it especially highly to the student of statistical physics: buy Sklar, and check out Krylov from the library.

Excellent update.......2003-05-26
As a child of the Vietnam era, I've long been curious to find out what became of the people that populated the Time magazine of my youth. Shillue brings up to date with a personal look at the lives and times of the Vietnamese. It is reassuring to hear about the resiliency of the Cambodian people and I was glad to see that Shillue's first-hand accounts bring us right into the lives of those we left behind. I particularly liked when she compared contemporary Americans to their counterparts in Asia.
Alright..........2001-10-27
This book was alright, a good description of Vietnam for those that have never been and want to know what is about over there. I studied in Hanoi for four months during college and it was a real trip back for me while reading this, especially when the author speaks of her visit to Hanoi. I stayed in Bach Khoa while I was there and lived in that very neighborhood for four months and it made me very nostaligic. However, the author tended to irritate me at times with what I saw as an attitude towards the culture and traditionalism of the northern region. Frankly, I didn't like this book as much as I thought I would...but then again I'm very biased when it comes to Vietnam since the country means a lot to me...
At last we see Vietnam as a place and not a war.......2000-04-17
Excellent Read! In the early 1990s I was an American businessman living in Vietnam and this well written book takes me back to the country and a time which I still miss every day.
It reminds Americans that Vietnam is a place and not a war.
If anyone wishes to see and feel Vietnam and Cambodia as they are today this is THE book to read. I look forward to Ms Shillue's next book.
Compelling, but needs a good copy edit.......2000-02-12
I am enjoying this book, but the numerous grammatical errors (ex.: the use of "it's" to indicate the possessive, as opposed to "its") are beginning to prove distracting. In this day and age, there is no excuse for such inattention to detail on the part of the publisher.
Wonderful sense of Vietnam today.......1998-08-29
This book is unusual, for it offers readers a sense of the sights, feelings and sounds of Vietnam in the late 1990s. Shillue is an honest reporter, who travels to Vietnam without war baggage. She writes like a dream and the only criticism I have of the book is that I wanted more. Read it.
