Since the collapse of the Bretton Woods system in 1971 and subsequent free-float of currencies, the capital markets have been deregulated. But the benefits of international liberalization, according to John Eatwell and Lance Taylor in their boldly argued Global Finance at Risk, "have been tarnished by considerable costs"--namely, more volatile foreign exchange and domestic interest rates, a greater susceptibility to contagion, and the threat of destabilizing financial crises.
The problem with the current network of regulatory authorities, write the authors (Eatwell is president of Queens' College at Cambridge University and a member of Britain's House of Lords, and Taylor is a professor of economics at the New School in New York), is they offer too little, too late and just don't manage the threat of systemic risk. To rectify this hole in the soul of the capital markets, they propose (some might say fancifully) a World Financial Authority, to be built on the back of the Bank for International Settlements, which would spearhead and manage international capital-market regulation, make policy, oversee the markets, and provide an enforcement mechanism as necessary. The authors don't fuss: their superregulator would supervise all markets. They make the further case, very much against the current grain in OECD countries, for restrictions on short-term capital inflows to developing countries during time of crisis and for the "management" of foreign exchange rates between the U.S. dollar, euro, and yen.
Along the way, Eatwell and Taylor recap (at times controversially) various financial crises over the last 30 years and cover hot-button issues ranging from moral hazard, regulatory arbitrage, and value-at-risk modeling to the risks posed by the increasing complexity of derivatives and the need for greater international accounting standardization. The book does not discuss the Basel Committee's newly proposed capital adequacy framework or the structural changes altering the markets as a result of electronic trading. These omissions, however, don't detract from the authors' feisty argument that the international financial markets--with their "remorseless dynamism" and destabilizing prospect of contagion--need activist leadership rather than mere babysitting. --Nina Mehta
Book Description
Now in paperback, a "timely" (Library Journal) argument for an international body that will foster a more stable, viable global financial system. In Global Finance at Risk, now available in paperback, two economists whom John Kenneth Galbraith has hailed as "accomplished scholars of the first rank" propose a bold solution to the financial crises that threaten us all: a World Financial Authority with powers to establish worldwide best-practice financial regulation and risk management. Expansion of finance in industrialized economies, including that of the nineteenth-century United States, was accompanied by the same kind of turbulence now afflicting Asia, Russia, and Latin America. Then, the solution was to establish national banking and securities regulators, create deposit insurance, and empower lenders of last resort. But in our increasingly globalized times, an account opened at a local bank can be based on bad debt from anywhere in the world, including places outside the jurisdiction of those national agencies. And when banks fail, it is not only their account holders who suffer, but all of us. This is why, argue John Eatwell and Lance Taylor in this timely and urgent book, effective regulation of international finance is crucial to the economic health of all nations. Global Finance at Risk casts a welcome light on the deepening intricacies of world financial systems.
Customer Reviews:
Best book on International Financial Market.......2004-05-05
John Eatwell was a professor of mine - a wonderful individual and an accomplished economist. This book is a lucid yet comprehensive account of world financial markets. The way it is written and organized makes it easy for almost anyone to read. Although it can be complex at times, this book is an excellent, compelling argument for International Regulation. Dont think twice to buy this one.
Where Global Currency is Headed; Excellent Book........2001-03-28
This is an excellent review of what has happened to, may happen to--and will happen to--the situation of Global Finance. Eatwell makes strong points about both currency in global markets, and its pejorative effects in local or regional areas. He brushes on many of the key issues concerned in golbal economic concerns, including Bretton Woods, IMF, the EC, the Asian economic crisis. In the end, he seems to suggest action of major restructuring of current currency guidelines, even to the point of 'support' for currencies or other like dimensions.
Overall, a very good book.

Great compilation.......2001-10-18
This is a collection of 6 articles from various anthropologists such as Lovejoy, Walker, Stringer, and Conkey. The book does a great job covering the major transitions in human evolution from Lovejoy's article on primates, sex, and Australopithecines to Walker's article on the origins of the Genus Homo and Homo erectus, an article on stone age technologies, Stringer's article on the origins of H. sapiens, Conkey's article on paleolithic art, and the final article on culture and its evolution.
This is a great book for someone who already has introductary background knowledge and presents some new theories and thinking in human evolution.
Each chapter is concluded with a list of references and a list of suggested readings. The end of the book contains a pretty extensive glossary. The inside covers also contain useful information (time line and family tree on the front and pictures of a human and chimp skeleton with labels on the back).
I originally checked this book out at the library for some research I was doing on the Nariokotome skeleton, but enjoyed it so much that I went ahead and purchased my copy.

Customer Reviews:
Short-range Wireless Telecommunications.......2007-03-12
This is a good book to give you an overview of the topic, but do not expect any indepth coverage. There is also a demo version of Mathcad, useful with the worksheets provided.
A Great Introductory Text.......2005-08-22
I read the book from cover-to-cover and found it to be very well-written with a good assortment of pertinent topics. The field is so diverse that no single text of reasonable size could possibly hit on every aspect of wireless communication, but Mr. Bensky does an excellent job of presenting what would be of interest to the engineer either just out of college or switching focus into the realm of WLAN, Bluetooth, RFID, etc.
Beginning with the basics of transmission lines and the Smith Chart, the book progresses naturally through modulation techniques, transmitter and receiver fundamentals, and on through system design and regulatory requirements. This book is definitely one that a newbie would appreciate. Oh, and the CD with my book worked just fine (one reviewer claimed to have problems with it).
In my own effort at publishing the RF Cafe website, I seek out sources of information at all levels of complexity to provide accessible resources for visitors to the site. Mostly I focus on entry-level content for pages I create and provide hyperlinks to sites with all the in-depth material. The content of "Short-range Wireless Communication" represents precisely the type of content I would include on RF Cafe, so that explains why I think highly of the book ;-).
Short-range Wireless Communication.......2005-08-02
Its a good introduction into wireless communcation in general. It is the starting point of a more detailed investigation into 802.11.2 or 802.14.4.
First Edition SRWC Book.......2004-09-15
I found this book very useful and I often refer to it for reference purposes, however the mathcad worksheets on the CD were not correct. I obtained the correct updated worksheets and they work great. The worksheets are downloadable from the WEB Site www.shortrangewireless.net
Highly recommend this book, for people getting into low power radio.
Great Book For Engineers and Technicians.......2004-06-27
The CD for this version DOES work, the last version was published by a different publisher and didn't work but this one is great! This book covers the a-z's of the short range wireless communication. It starts out with coverage of the radio signal propagation, communications protocols and modulation methods, information theory, antennas and transmission lines, receivers, transmitters, radio system design, and; ends up with how to successfully implement a short-range wireless system - This book is an A++

Book Description
Introducing Special Relativity provides an easy and rewarding way into special relativity for first and second year university students studying physics. The author establishes the fundamentals of relativity at the outset of this book so readers fully understand the principles and know how to them before moving on to subjects, like time dilation, that often are a source of difficulty for students. The primary topics addressed include conserved relativistic energy and momentum, applications of the Lorentz transformation, and developments in 20th-century physics. This volume also reviews some of the early experiments in the development of special relativity.

Book Description
What is the process by which literature might provide us with access to knowledge, and what sort of knowledge might this be? The question is not simply whether literature thinks, but whether literature thinks theoretically—whether it has a capacity, without the external aid of analytical methods that have determined Western philosophy and science since the Enlightenment, to theorize the conditions of the world from which it emerges and to which it addresses itself.
Suspicion about literature’s access to knowledge is ancient, at least as old as Plato's notorious expulsion of the poets from the city in the Republic. With full awareness of this classical background and in dialogue with a broad range of twentieth-century thinkers, Gourgouris examines a range of literary texts, from Sophocles’ Antigone to Don DeLillo’s The Names, as he traces out his argument that literature possesses an intrinsic theoretical capacity to make sense of the nonpropositional.

Book Description
Part One During the 1998 Clinton Scandal, Sue Garoutte started writing pro-Clinton comments to the Wichita Eagle. She continued to write comments to the paper on other subjects. When the editor of the Op-Ed page started the Opinion Maker Program, Sue started writing on whatever subject she was assigned. This made her a mini celebrity in Wichita. People would say, "Oh, you are Sue Garoutte. You are probably right" (about the subject of that day). The editor describes her writings as both poignant and pithy. Her subjects range from politics to the war, to everyday struggles, stimulating public debate. The best of her writings appear in this book, What Does Sue Think About That? Part Two With Jim''s Help (My Most Unforgettable Character) After Sue''s husband, Tony, had a stroke, she hired a man, Jim Lakey to help care for him. She needed Jim, since she had schizophrenic catatonic episodes. Later, she was cured of this condition when her new doctor used a new, never before tried treatment. It relieved all her symptoms almost instantly. Her husband''s career had spanned three cities, as he rose-grade B inspector to Engineering Manager! A story of the little guy making it in America. To quote Tony: "I have had the most fantastic life anyone has ever had!"

Book Description
England in Conflict 1603-1660 tells the story of the disintegration of the early modern polity. By questioning the meanings of the body politic it is able to bridge not only the high and low but also divergent approaches to the period. The book's opening explorations of the practices and assumptions of politics, of religious life in center and locality, of social relationships and of economic patterns, are followed by a turn to narrative. The drama of the slide from royal peace into civil war and revolution, and the trauma of the failure of that revolution, are caught with a clarity that does not come at the price of distortion. Derek Hirst has blended his own continuing researches with more than a decade of challenging scholarship that appeared since his Authority and Conflict (from which this book is descended). The result is a wholly fresh work. Centered around ambiguities of community in early modern England--the community of the realm embodied in the king, the local communities with all their strengths and subversions, the political community as an autonomous agent--the text enlivens such debates as those over revisionism, Puritanism, the church, and witchcraft while at the same time making sense of the complexities of crisis and continuity.

Book Description
The strange new disease SARS erupted apparently out of nowhere and has spread at an astonishing rate. Scary as SARS itself is, the disease is also a warning of many possible such outbreaks to come. Featuring the disturbing story of SARS—where it came from, what it is, and how to protect yourself from it—as well as those of many other recently evolved deadly scourges,
The New Killer Diseases is a shocking call to arms.
All around us—in our homes, workplaces, and public spaces—bacteria and viruses are evolving at a feverish rate, and our best defenses against them are in danger of being overwhelmed. The threat posed by emerging infectious diseases is as formidable as any challenge the human race has ever faced, and the evolutionary scales may be tipping in favor of the microbes.
In
The New Killer Diseases, a respected immunologist and a veteran science author introduce the vital facts the public must know about the astonishing range of killer microbes we are up against. From the SARS and West Nile viruses to mad cow and Ebola, thirty new deadly diseases have arisen since the 1970s, and twenty old scourges, such as plague and cholera, are reemerging. But the FDA only recently approved the first new type of antibiotic in thirty-four years, and vaccines for many of the most lethal viruses are a long way from development. In addition, researchers have only lately discovered that bacteria have been swapping resistance genes—genes that help them evade the drugs meant to kill them—and are evolving new mechanisms to fight off even our best drugs at a startling pace.
Featuring many remarkable stories of people who have contracted bizarre new afflictions, including that of the doctor who first diagnosed SARS and then died from it,
The New Killer Diseases empowers readers by revealing in a gripping, detailed fashion the way these new diseases manifest themselves, the symptoms to watch out for, and how to get a correct diagnosis in time. The book also goes to the front lines of the war being waged by researchers and medical professionals across the country, profiling the pioneers who are leading the fight and introducing the latest scientific developments, from new genetic techniques to promising drug programs, which may allow us to beat back the microbe menace.
The New Killer Diseases arms us with the knowledge to protect ourselves and our families, leaving us alert and fully informed about the troubling extent of the formidable threat we face.

Shocking! Informative! Powerful Book You Don't Want to Miss!.......2004-02-22
I could not put this book down and found the information extremely valuable and frightening! Forget reading a Stephen King novel, pick up this book and you will be horrified at the number of killer viruses, bacteria, and even prions (the substance responsible for Mad Cow Disease.) The authors have done an excellent job of showing the path of the newest killer diseases! A prolific book on the subject of newly emerging diseases!
Lions, tigers and PRIONS, beware!.......2003-10-23
This is not the sort of information that one should talk about at the next wedding reception; especially if there stands a food buffet complete with salad bar --- salad bars are the 'Typhoid Mary's' of our modern, super-infectious times.
Authors Elinor Levy and Mark Fischetti talk intelligently about 'super-spreaders."...No - not merely persons possessing big booties, but instead, people infected with nasty germs and viruses that pass it on to an inordinate number of unsuspecting saps. One day a person boards a bus, and by the next morning, they find themselves in isolation for treatment of SARS. Nurses and Doctors also become sickened by these 'superspreaders' and pretty soon, the World Health Organization declares an epidemic of one type of pneumonia that is tough to treat.
Well, the discussions about SARS,E Coli 0157, AIDS, Hepatitis C and over usage of antibiotics rage on throughout the 292 page labor of medical research.
Once again, the message to bring home is to WASH YOUR HANDS!
For God's sakes! Get up from this computer and knock those germie germs off su manos immediamente! Caramba!
On page 117 -- Chapter 4 -- Here come the PRIONS...oooh --- they're scary little non-living things...an entirely new class of pathogen that for years, scientists scoffed that they even existed. But PRIONS is what caused Mad Cow Disease in Britian, or the other fatal disease in humans referred to as Cueutzfeldt-Jakob disease. THe brain literally is eaten up by these cells that act wildly. Imagine a normal neuron is like a fold-up chair, and your brain is like a huge auditorium filled neatly with folding chairs lined up nice, orderly and neatly in rows. only Prions trigger your folding chairs to suddenly fold up wildly, like a metal folding chair that was hit by a car. Prions make your chairs mangled by their influence. Once the prions get a hold of your neurons, it passes on messages and in no time at all, your brain is a messed-up avalanche of a tangled mess of metal folding chairs, as if an 18 wheeler truck mistakenly drove through.
PRIONS our our newest microscopic foe, and doctors don't know how to kill them without also killing the victim.
The victim gets the prion infestation by eating infected meat, and for all we know, those cows in Britian had an outbreak and the heards were slaughtered in order to prevent them from infecting other cattle world-wide.
Sure hope it worked.
After scaring the bee-jezus outta the reader, the book finally winds down to what we can do about germ warfare, overuse of antibiotics and development of probiotics and other potential weapons against microbes that mutate and reconform their outer membranes to keep fooling man kind from killing them.
Hey - it's gonna be us or them.....somebody please pass the Ciprofloxacin!
Disturbing.......2003-10-14
In this disturbing new book, authors Mark Fischetti and Dr. Elinor Levy look at the recent trends in the evolution of germs and demonstrate the threat that they represent to all of humanity. Beginning with the recent advent of SARS, the book examines a plethora of naturally occurring pathogens, and how they have changed since the post-World War 2 years, when antibiotics seemed to represent the ultimate victory of man over disease. Increasingly, doctors have found that familiar (and treatable) pathogens are returning in new forms that are more deadly than those seen before, and are increasingly immune to existing medical treatment.
This is not a book for the complacent. In this book, the authors are sounding an alarm at recent trends, and are recommending quick action in the war between humans and germs. The book is crammed full of stories of the effects of the newer generations of diseases, and will shock and disturb anyone who doesn't take them seriously.
But, the book is not primarily sensationalistic, but instead treats the topic as a serious subject that must be explained to the lay reader. Indeed, at times the authors are quite optimistic, informing the reader of new and developing fields of immunology that promise whole new fronts being opened up in the war against germs. So, if you are interested in the present trends in medicine and diseases, then I would highly recommend this book to you. Indeed, if you have heard tales of SARS and Mad Cow Disease, and want to know what's going on, then you must get this book!
Well worth reading.......2003-09-21
I had no idea we were each under such serious threat from infectious diseases until I read this book. I ignored how vulnerable we all are. The book details the rise of infectious diseases in the past 25 years - 30 new ones in that short time.
The new killers are all here: SARS, West Nile, Mad Cow, flesh-eating bacteria, hepatitis C, HIV, plus possibilities of bioterrorism, and more.
Detailed stories of many of the victims are riveting; some died, some survive. I couldn't stop reading accounts of these people, what they endured, and the course of their illness. I learned how to recognize symptoms of the diseases, how these illnesses operate in our bodies, and how our immune systems, and drugs, try to battle them.
The book reveals how we have made things worse, but explains what scientists and politicians can do to protect us. Now I'm aware, and I know what to look out for to try to protect myself.
It's well worth reading.
