    2 out of 5 stars A disaapointment.......2000-10-25

.... [This] book says it proves the Black-Scholes equation. Hence why
does it reveal anything new about trading options as you have
indicated that you have done personally and why would anyone pay [this much money]
or more not to find out anything of use? .... I might have paid [half of the price] for the comic relief,
such as the following. Your comment that you have proven why markets
rise when the market aggregate put/call ratio increases doesn't seem
to make sense. Put premiums maybe prepaid costs of default ( in a
perverted sense as discussed below) but the point of a put is to earn
a return above the premium, ie it is expected that the market will
decline; no one pays a premium to incur an overall loss. I don't
think you have explained it at all. Almost any theorem can be
justified by (selective) statistics. As Mark Twain said; 'there are
lies, damn lies, and statistics". Further I believe you play
with words as much or more than the experts you condemn, many of them
Nobel prize winners (Black, Scholes, Merton, Samuelson). All
specialties create their own jargon but I don't think this is a
reflection of shimary. For instance your use of the phrase that
'options are prepaid costs of default' is a complete distortion of the
word 'default', which is defined to be a breach of contract on an
obligation; whereas under an option contract no one breaches anything
in complying with the contract. Instead your complaint that an option
is not a right to anything , but an obligation, is a total
misrepresentation of the fact that the right exists before exercise or
expiry pending the future price results of the underlying. For
instance, in the case of a call, 'I have the right to acquire the
underlying, which I will do if the price increases before expiry'. At
least the right was a right for a period of time; your default never
occurs and is totally vacuous. Finally you say that that while tha
B/S equation is right for stocks, it is wrong for everything else. Yet
you quote no statistics to support your case; would this have not been
a good time to go to the stats and perhaps earn your $60? As Einstein
    said, all theories are worthless if not based on empirical evidence;
    or was he another idiot? However in terms on showmanship, I applaud;
but intellectual rigor? I think not!

    5 out of 5 stars An in-depth look.......2000-07-16

Finally, a book that has an in-depth, technical review of options and derivatives is here. Helpful explanations follow the analysis made. A great book to use to learn and to think about options and option valuation. I enjoyed it!

Paperback. Visualization in Modern Cartography explores links between the centuries-old discipline of cartography and today's revolutionary developments in scientific visualization. The book has three main goals: (1) to pass on design and symbolization expertise to the scientific visualization community - information that comes from centuries of pre-computer visualization by cartographers, and their more recent experiences with computerizing the discipline; (2) to help cartographers cope with the dramatic shift from print cartography to a dynamic virtual cartography for which their role is changing from that of map designer to one of spatial information display (and/or interface) designer; (3) to illustrate the expanded role for cartography in geographic, environmental, planning, and earth science applications that comes with the development of interactive geographic visualization tools. To achieve these goals, the book is divided into thr

                Book Description

Geometric ideas and techniques play an important role in operator theory and the theory of operator algebras. Smooth Homogeneous Structures in Operator Theory builds the background needed to understand this circle of ideas and reports on recent developments in this fruitful field of research. Requiring only a moderate familiarity with functional analysis and general topology, the author begins with an introduction to infinite dimensional Lie theory with emphasis on the relationship between Lie groups and Lie algebras. A detailed examination of smooth homogeneous spaces follows. This study is illustrated by familiar examples from operator theory and develops methods that allow endowing such spaces with structures of complex manifolds. The final section of the book explores equivariant monotone operators and Kähler structures. It examines certain symmetry properties of abstract reproducing kernels and arrives at a very general version of the construction of restricted Grassmann manifolds from the theory of loop groups. The author provides complete arguments for nearly every result. An extensive list of references and bibliographic notes provide a clear picture of the applicability of geometric methods in functional analysis, and the open questions presented throughout the text highlight interesting new research opportunities. Daniel Beltitâ is a Principal Researcher at the Institute of Mathematics "Simion Stoilow" of the Romanian Academy, Bucharest, Romania.

5 out of 5 stars An admirable and penetrating essay!.......2006-01-07

The number of golden books written with such panache, distinction and touch of inimitable genius is not so abundant like it seems. De Qincey makes an admirable dissection, plenty of fine irony, elegant eloquence, intelligent humor and seductive charm around the crime, going far beyond the superficial causes and making a fabulous and delirious journey through the ethic, moral and customs with zealous intellectual rigor blended with that peculiar touch we use to perceive in Bernard Shaw, Thomas Carlyle or Oscar Wilde.

This is an impeccable exercise of erudition around this mysterious but always present enigmatic feature of the human soul, that transcends frontiers, socio cultural barriers or ancestral beliefs of any nature.

                Absolutely recommended, without reserves.

1 out of 5 stars A Great Work Ruined by a Poor Publisher.......2005-08-06

I don't want to ruin the delight of discovery for the reader of this marvelous satire. Its title alone prepares you well enough for its contents. Instead, I intend for this review to steer the unsuspecting victim away from this edition in particular, and away from Kissinger Publications in general. Kissinger prides itself on the preservation of rare and out-of-print books, offering these ugly, unsatisfying chapbooks as though they were faithful reproductions of great literature.

De Quincey's satire, at least as exemplary an instance of the genre as Swift's "A Modest Proposal," becomes a bundle of kindling in Kissinger's presentation. The book is thin, but the xerox-quality paper they choose is almost letter size, as uncomfortable in the hand as it is on the bookshelf. Its cover and binding offend the eye with their jaundice-yellow color. The spine bears no lettering to identify it next to others of its foul ilk. And that's just for the outside.

Inside, De Quincey's text is set in a blurring type. But the most criminal mutilation Kissinger commits is in its omissions. The original work contains numerous footnotes by the author elaborating on historical and biographical points. Kissinger deletes these entirely! Where De Quincey quotes directly from Greek authors, Kissinger doesn't even try to set the Greek type or even transliterate, but substitutes for the quotation the insulting annotation, [Greek text here]. They provide neither translation nor excuse for these glaring elipses, which make for a confusing, frustrating read.

In short, Kissinger has butchered one of the most undeservedly unknown masterpieces of English essay literature. If Kissinger's edition is to be the only easily accessible edition of De Quincey's greatest short piece, then it will certainly die out entirely. No renaissance of De Quincey will ever be sparked by this disaster. In short, it is impossible to be satisfied with this book. Don't buy it, and don't buy anything else by Kissinger Publications.

                    Book Description

From the ratification of the Constitution to the outbreak of the Civil War, few persons played a greater role in American history than Daniel Webster. He was a spokesman of New England commercial interests in the War of 1812, approving the threat of state interposition by the Hartford Convention; later an apostle of the industrial system and advocate of protective tariffs; a brilliant expositor of the Constitution as an instrument for national economic growth and strong central government; the architect of a foreign policy that brought permanent peace between the United States and England; the Great Compromiser who, as much as any other public man, tried to reconcile the clashing interests of North and South.

Despite his importance Webster has never been the subject of a full-scale, scholarly biography. Maurice C. Baxter's One and Inseparable traces the interrelated evolution of the public career and the private life of this imposing and controversial Yankee. He portrays Webster as an unswerving patriot, an advocate of nationality, and a champion of peace and the Union--but also reveals him as a self-promoting politician who varied his positions to suit the interests of his constituents and was sometimes insensitive to the great moral issues of his day. This devoted family man, enterprising if not altogether successful farmer, and genial companion could he egotistical, immoderate in his drinking habits, and careless about personal finances. Reading Baxter's lucid, moving biography it is possible to understand why Ralph Waldo Emerson so detested Daniel Webster but also called him "the competest man" produced by America, adding: "Nature had not in our days, or not since Napoleon, cut out such a masterpiece."

"Evidence of a flight from reason is as old as human record-keeping: the fact of it certainly goes back an even longer way. Flight from science specifically, among the forms of rational inquiry, goes back as far as science itself... But rejection of reason is now a pattern to be found in most branches of scholarship and in all the learned professions."--from the introduction

In the widely acclaimed Higher Superstition: The Academic Left and Its Quarrels with Science, Paul R. Gross and Norman Levitt offered a spirited response to the "science bashers", raising serious questions about the growing criticism of scientific practice from humanists and social scientists on the academic left. Now, in The Flight from Science and Reason, Gross and Levitt are joined by Martin W. Lewis to bring together a diverse and distinguished group of scholars, scientists, and experts to engage these questions from a wide variety of perspectives.

The authors take on critics of science whose views range from moderate to extreme, from social constructivists to deconstructionists, from creationists and feminists to Afro-centrists. They discuss the rise of "alternative medicine" and radical environmentalism (here skewered as "ecosentimentalism"). They explain why the "uncertainty principle" does not work as a metaphor for ambiguity, and why "chaos theory" cannot be invoked without an understanding of mathematics. Throughout, they grapple with the paradox inherent in arguing with opponents who contend that reason itself, and thus logic, is suspect.

4 out of 5 stars An important collection of lectures........2005-06-21

A broad but restrained look at various aspects of the irrationalist fad. The lectures put forward clear and calm arguments exposing the disturbing trends in academia that are hopefully losing popularity as their lack of substance is revealed. This was never meant to be a popular book, but for anyone with an interest or a stake in the pursuit of knowledge, or the standard of our education system, it is a useful reference.

                    4 out of 5 stars A Critique of UnReason.......2000-08-05

To write a review of this book is actually to exercise the very constructivist principles which the Enlightenment bestowed on the humanities. Most of what passes for criticism these days is so de-constructivist that one wonders exactly what qualitative judgement is being passed, and exactly on what subject. These are writings by academics, and so what? They remind me of the early-Christian monks in Ireland, transcribing the surviving wisdom of the ancients and periodically fleeing from barbarian hordes farther and farther West. Well, this is as far West as we can go, folks. It's time to turn and face the barbarians. Unless you're one of those bored citizens who're looking forward to them, like the ones in Cavafy's "Waiting for the Barbarians."

5 out of 5 stars The style of this book.......2000-07-14

To the critics of this book's style rather than content: This is a collection of conference proceedings. This means that the articles are basically transcribed lectures. The slightly awkward style of writing stems from the origins of the articles as speech, not text.

                    As for the content: superb.

4 out of 5 stars Necessary work, but overly academic.......2000-04-24

As a history major, and someone who is fed up with post-modernist nonesense at the university, this book was a must-read for me.

I only have two concerns with this otherwise solid title.

                    1) The text is too academic -- how about a short, readable book for the masses? I propose a FAQ (Frequently Asked Questions) format that would enable students and others to confront unargued post-modern dogma.

                    2) I would have loved an examination of the historical roots of post-modernism and other forms of irrationalism. For those who are interested, Wendy Kaminer's book 'Sleeping with Extra-Terrestrials' is a good examination of American irrationalism.

Finally, if anyone else reading this review is a student (or teacher) at a university who is concerned with the stifling of free inquiry in education, please e-mail me and initiate a discussion. Thank you.

4 out of 5 stars A scholarly collection of papers.......2000-03-15

Those looking for some more (well deserved) bashing of the postmodernist academic left, such as that found in Gross and Levitt's previous book "Higher Superstition" may be disappointed. This book is a collection of papers delivered at a conference held under the auspices of the New York Academy of Sciences, organized by the authors. The papers vary both in quality and in thrust depending on the author.

The book is divided into 11 sections, each containing three to five papers that fit into the general category. Categories include "The Public Image of Science", "The Foundations of Physics", "Health", "Environment", "Feminism", "Humanities", "Religion" and "Education", among others.

It being proceedings from a conference, few papers actually delve into particular examples of bad science. Notable exceptions are "Building bridges to Afrocentrism" by Ann Macy Roth and "Whatever happened to historical evidence?" by Mary Lefkowitz, both of which contain criticisms of many afrocentrist claims regarding the egyptians, among a handful of others. Other papers talk about the philosophical underpinnings of the postmodernist movement, or survey some of the literature, or encourage scientist to speak up in defense of science against the attacks by those championing the irrational. Many authors try not to get into discussions of validity in order to not be seen as "preaching to the choir", which can leave the lay reader looking for more postmodernist howlers feeling ill-served.

On the other hand, the articles contain a wealth of information in the form of references, and mark trends both of the anti-science academic left and her critics. Not recommended to non-scientist (read Gross and Levitt's other book instead), but those with a keen interest in the debates what what science "is" will find it an interesting and thought provoking read.
