I have personally adopted a number of suggestions Paul has made in his book, and let me tell you, it works. This guy has it all in one bag!

One of the quickest and easiest changes to make is that of "volunteering". As a result of my volunteering for everything that came sailing by, I got a 25% raise and it happened in the first 30 days of new employment! And I didn't have to work all that hard to get it!

Another item Paul illuminates is thinking about how to get "it" done. Being willing to stick my neck out a little and vocalize the problem and offer workable solutions has the "Boss" sitting back in his chair and saying, "Go for it. Sounds like you know what you are talking about." Paul calls this making yourself 'useful' and what it really means is ultimately being useful to yourself!

This is an easy read full of 'Wow', 'Aha' and 'I'll be darned'! 'I gotta try this stuff!'

I believe that if anyone is serious about a rewarding and enjoyable career, no matter what it is, this book is a must read. Paul Bauck puts it down in writing and makes it understandable, useable and rewardable.

This is information that is fun to learn!

Quantitative Modeling of Derivative Securities demonstrates how to take the basic ideas of arbitrage theory and apply them - in a very concrete way - to the design and analysis of financial products. Based primarily (but not exclusively) on the analysis of derivatives, the book emphasizes relative-value and hedging ideas applied to different financial instruments. Using a "financial engineering approach," the theory is developed progressively, focusing on specific aspects of pricing and hedging and with problems that the technical analyst or trader has to consider in practice. A useful introduction to modeling of derivatives.......2002-12-02

This book is written by the two well-known applied mathematicians - Marco Avellaneda of the Courant Institute and Peter Laurence of the University of Rome. Avellaneda has been involved in financial mathematics for a number of years, while Laurence's interest in this subject is more recent. The book can serve as a useful introduction to the quantitative analysis in financial markets. As such, it covers a lot of ground stretching from an exposition of the standard Black-Scholes theory to an interesting description of the HJM framework. In addition to the standard material, it contains several original results developed by the authors themselves. The first printing had so many typos that its study was difficult for a novice. Most of these typos had been corrected in the second printing. In its present form, the book can be strongly recommended to a general reader with interest in the mathematical finance.

This book is no doubt written in haste and typos are galore. I have read this book in its entirety and I highly recommend it. Concepts well covered include Binomial trees, Brownian motion and stochastic calculus, APT, HJM formulation, etc. It is a great stepping stone to get to Duffy's book. A second edition would be a great idea.

Avellaneda's worse performance.......2000-03-23

This is a surprisingly sloppy book written by a known academic in the financial engineering world. That is Marco Avellaneda. At first sight, this book is a good idea. It is suppose to bridge the gap between literature that are too simplified for quants and the high level books that are too mathematically rigorous for pratitioners. However this book is presented in such a sloopy manner that any profit driven company would sack these two authors. There are typo mistakes in almost every page and some fundamental errors. There are numerical examples there are completely wrong. On top of that, who writes a quant book without giving any exercises. The authors should comprehend that mistakes in quantitative books can be very misleading to the reader especially if the reader is trying to learn. If you don't have a Ph.D. in Math, don't read this book. It might do more harm than good.

Obviously I followed the wrong review. Those who feel that thetypos are immaterial are misleading. I lost many hours trying tounderstand what the book was doing in many places only to realize that the book was just wrong. So, if you don't have a lot of spare time, and don't wish to be an editor, please do yourself a favor and skip this book. END

Although nominally protected by a plethora of laws, and championed in several well-intentioned declarations and charters, today's worker often feels adrift on an uncharted sea subject to unpredictable currents that have nothing to do with the quality of his or her work.

Can we get at the root of this serious problem? We can at least determine if our existing legal systems, especially in the area of collective bargaining, discrimination, social security and European integration are able and ready to tackle the world-of-work challenges that confront us. And if they are not, we can begin to formulate a basis for new and effective labour and social security laws. This was in fact the essential impetus for the European Conference of the International Society of Labour Law and Social Security held in Stockholm in September 2002, a ground-breaking conference of which this book is the written record.

In general, the papers stress the European situation, as it is in the EU, both as it exists today and as it is likely to be in the foreseeable future, a community of twenty-five nations, that the major work challenges are felt, and that the legal debate on relevant issues is strongest and most open. However, the twenty-four distinguished authors include representatives from countries as far-flung as Belarus and Congo, Korea and Turkey, and with these contributions the analysis extends to a study of fundamental rights as they actually exist under a wide variety of labour and social security law regimes in today's world.

GREAT LAB BOOK.......2007-09-15

This book is a very helpful, practical lab book for college biology. It can be used for 2 semesters so is also a great value. I was lucky enough to have Ed Devine as an instructor for Bio, and just like his lectures, his book is very understandable, and information and labs follow in an order that makes "sense" and is very informative.

The title of this book is a slight misnomer, since author Richard Fisher seems to get out of a volcanic crater only long enough to board a plane bound for another one. This is a professional rather than personal memoir, although Fisher's wife of nearly 52 years, Beverly, pops up engagingly in several chapters. Fisher lyrically describes the physical landscapes in which he did his field work, amply revealing his own inner life--in particular his quiet conviction that the earth is a sacred place with workings human beings may study and marvel at but never fully comprehend. A volcanologist specializing in pyroclastic rocks (the kind shot out of a volcano during its explosive phases), Fisher was a professor of geology at the University of California, Santa Barbara, from 1955 until his retirement in 1993. Totally Pyroclastic!.......2000-04-23

Mr. Fisher, besides being a world-renowned volcanologist, is also an amazing storyteller. I enjoyed every page of his book. What is wonderful about this professional journal is its appeal to all types of audiences. A young adult reader to a professional in earth sciences can enjoy this type of non-fiction literature. Not only did I learn general information about volcanology & pyroclastic eruptions, but I also laughed out loud when reading about Mr. Fisher's travelling mishaps -specially about Napoleon, the cantankerous mule he met in Mexico. The career path he chose was a result of significant events in his life, including being witness to two atom bomb explosions at Bikini atoll. The passion he holds for his career is felt as a reader and it truly is "geologically and culturally stimulating" as he describes the culture and geology of his research sites around the world.

This is a novel approach to teaching dynamic aspects of the operation of semiconductor and opto-electronic devices. The traditional approach emphasizes an understanding of the steady equilibrium operation. However, dynamic aspects often determine the steady state conditions and the dynamical operation is of increasing importance as modern methods of communicating data and information require electronic devices that switch electrical or optical signals at ever faster rates. The opening chapter considers a number of simple problems, several drawn from daily experience, where the rates of movement can be used to determine equilibrium states. The remainder of the book concentrates on specific problems in semiconductor physics: the rates at which transistors and diodes can switch, and the rates at which electrons and holes can interact with photons, and photons with photons.

Classic.......2001-07-20

Patrick White is of course Australia's most famous novelist. He lived for some time in exile but returned to Australia and lived there for some years before dying some years ago. He was a somewhat prickly character but his winning of the Nobel Prize for literature helped solidify his reputation.

This book is unusual in is clarity and sheer joy. A number of White's books are heavy going, densely written and pretentious. This book however was simply sheer delight. It concerns two old men who live together and are brothers. One is reasonably intelligent and has worked in a library. The other is what might be described as intellectually simple. The book consists of both of these characters speaking and talking about their lives and their past.

White was a gay man who lived most of his life with a companion who he was deeply attached to. One suspects that the book is loosely based on their later life, but of course this is only speculation. The character who is most hardly done by is the librarian who clearly is White.

It is hard really to describe the delight and joy of the book, however once I picked it up I could not stop reading it.
