Customer Reviews:
No Cash No Fear.......2007-07-27
Funny man, Terry Alen, writing about his roller coaster ride in the world of business, revealing tips on how to start even when you have no money.
May not work in some countries, read the book, you will find out!
Enjoy!
Dreamers - Stay Clear - This 1 is for the Serious Entrepreneur.......2006-02-09
The only people who will ever really appreciate this book by Terry Allen are those who are deadly serious about being self employed. Those of us DO-ERS who are LIVING the "dream" have already woken up to the fact that yes - living the dream is fun and rewarding and also acknowledge that its at the same time a nightmare rollercoaster of ups and downs. Terry captures this perfectly. THERE IS NOT a real step by step guide to setting up business and being successful - if there was everybody would do it - and those looking for one are just dreamers and are bound to fail ! Why? because its all about Entrepeneurial spirit, enthusiasm and learning along the way. In the very rare instance of the lucky chips all lining up and your business being an immediately huge success - then thank your lucky stars! - but success brings all types of problems of its own and each situation and business is unique. So even these lucky few face problems at some point.
Every page of this book speaks of a fascinating insight into what true Entrepreneurs are like and for those who can truly "SEE". - This book is full of great advice and warning.
Those who spout about not getting anything from this book are solidly in the "dreamers only camp" and would clearly do better working up through management and hopefully reaching Director / or even Chairman where they rely on everybody around them to be the brains and creative ones driving the business forward!
If you really have the passion and desire to be your own boss - then buckle-up and keep re-reading this superb biography. I was given this book from a fellow sucessful entrepreneur and we have thoroughly enjoyed what Terry Allen has had to say. As a business owner of three different businesses, two failed businesses behind me and percentage interests in another two businesses - I have certainly taken on board one or two of his more creative methods of solving problems.
BTW - All entrepeneurs fall over at some point in being in business. They dont stay down (The "also-runs") they get back up and say NEXT. You dont ever fail until you give up !!! ;-)
WASTE of Money and Paper.......2005-07-31
Too bad, the lowest rating is a "one" star....because I would have given it "0" stars.
Very disappointed and a complete waste of money and time. I broke the cardinal rule, I bought the book on a 'whim' and didn't even open the book before purchase...my ERROR don't let it be yours!
I skimmed the book in less then 30 minutes, less I actually think, because there is NOTHING of value in it! Terry Allen wrote strictly of his personal experiences, which were very one sided and lacked ANY substance. For example, he states, he sold 100 worth of options to his family for $1 each, then sold the stock years later for $100,000 each. Question is how!? Why would anyone buy stock from members of his family for $100,000 each? What did the investors get in return, what was the basis for the sale? No information is given.
There is just a bunch of incomplete thoughts and ideas in this book. Sad and totally disappointed with myself for spending any money but mostly disappointed to think that apparently anybody can write a book with absolutely no value in it and still get it published. Did the publisher even read the book? Did anyone? Doubt it because it is a complete waste of paper and ink.
Its nonsense, not even fun.......2004-08-16
I read this book, had to look hard to find all that is advertised. 4 ingredients to cook up a business idea, 4 commandents for running a solid, profitable company. Well, three stories about his business experience would have been sufficient to explain his business idea. It was a tiresome read about all his business disasters. I tried the no money down route to buying a house. Never found a guillable person to agree to this. I tried to purchase a business this way as well. If a business is for sale, everyone that is selling wants their money. Even if the business is not worth what they are asking, some fool will come along pay the price. Its the American dream being a business owner. I tend to think now all these books on how to do it with no cash are full of nonsense. If i find out the secret to making money, why would I tell anything else?? If I make it, i dont need to boast. Save your money. Read good books on business and try to form relationships with people that are successful so you can learn from real life successful people who did it the first time around because they had sound business experience.
Fascinating reading for the TRUE entrepreneur.......2004-02-22
I loved this book. Despite the handful of negative comments, let me tell you: they are simply wrong. The commenters seem more to judge the author, as opposed to the book itself. This book is actually quite good. I really enjoyed reading about the author's entrepreneurial adventures and how he bootstrapped himself through it all. You will learn from it, and it may give you some inspiration. This is a "real world" entrepreneur's story, unlike so much of the bloated theory you see in other books out there. I've bought thousands of 'theory' books over the years, so when I spot something like this, it's a real treat. If you love the idea of being an entrepreneur, and want to learn from someone who has done it, by all means, get this book. I think you'll thoroughly enjoy it, as I did.

Good source of hard-to-find Small Scale Agriculture tools.......1999-01-13
This book is Loaded with sources for, difficult to find, small scale agriculture or homesteaders tools.
But remember this book was published in 1978. So some of the businesses listed are no more. And some better solutions might be out there.
Also look for titles by Gene Logsdon. He is THE source for small scale farmers and wanna be's.

Book Description
Is the universe infinite or just really big? With this question, the gifted young cosmologist Janna Levin not only announces the central theme of her intriguing and controversial new book but establishes herself as one of the most direct and unorthodox voices in contemporary science. For even as she sets out to determine how big “really big” may be, Levin gives us an intimate look at the day-to-day life of a globe-trotting physicist, complete with jet lag and romantic disturbances.
Nimbly synthesizing geometry, topology, chaos and string theories, Levin shows how the pattern of hot and cold spots left over from the big bang may one day reveal the size and shape of the cosmos. She does so with such originality, lucidity—and even poetry—that
How the Universe Got Its Spots becomes a thrilling and deeply personal communication between a scientist and the lay reader.
Customer Reviews:
Beyond Classification........2007-01-07
A glance at the table of contents reveals a list of scientific topics, so one might expect to have found a popular science book. Flipping through the illustrations uncovers an assembly of star maps and human silhouettes in kaleidoscopic patterns -- so perhaps a fantasy novel? Reading a page unveils a discussion of decrepit London apartments, a failed relationship, and the internal monologue of a 30-something suddenly feeling lost in her life, as in an autobiographical work. So which is it? In truth: all of the above.
As a work of pop-sci, Levin's book uniquely contributes to the preexisting canon, in that it deals with the notion of finite universes. No other pop-sci book considers this fascinating proposal as seriously or extensively. At the same time, it also covers the pop-sci basics, introducing the ideas of relativity and quantum mechanics in prose easily comprehensible to any literate adult with no background in science. There are also brief digressions describing the uncanny personalities whose names are shared with the relevant physical theories.
While nothing in the book is fictional, the possible universes explored could easily be mistaken as such. The twisted topologies Levin walks the reader though are tantamout to a scientific discussion of an MC Escher painting brought to life. But the story told alongside the physics is not one that takes place on a Klein bottle or Mobius strip. The book is structured as actual letters from the author to her mother, letters that were never sent. Levin shares with the reader intimate details of her personal life, revealing the circumstances under which academic life takes place. Her gift for elegant prose is unique among scientists, and she uses her engagingly artistic writing to give the lay reader insight into the way a physicist's perspective makes life and the universe a place of unfathomable beauty.
Given that the vast majority of popular physics books potentially shelved next to this one essentially just repeat each other in both content and style, you'd be doing yourself a tremendous disservice choosing any of them over How the Universe Got Its Spots: Diary of a Finite Time in a Finite Space.

Dissapointing End.......2006-11-10
Great beginnings but a poor end. The sceintist fails to take a position on her scientific observations and opinions, and tries to relate it to her personal life. Very good book, but dissapointing end. Yes, I am over age 13. My son is a theoretical mathematician, so I understand the peculiarities of the abstract thinkers.
Easy-to-read pop science.......2006-11-03
Some of the reviews of "How the Universe Got Its Spots" express disappointment that it's not a more comprehensive scientific text, and that, unfortunately, misses the point of the book. It's more a memoir than a reference work. Working in tech, I am frequently faced with the dilemma of having to explain to members of my extended family what I do for a living, and it's tough, especially when there's no context, no base knowledge. Levin's explanations are simple without being pandering or condescending. Her insights are not as deep as you'd find in a PhD dissertation, her histories not as well-researched as you'd expect in a historical tome, but again, that's not the point. It's a catching-up written by a daughter to her mother explaining what she does for a living, an attempt at explaining how she got to where she is, why she took her life in that direction, and why she loves what she does. The science is secondary, but wonderfully described.
If you're looking for an overview of theoretical physics, look elsewhere. If you want a quick read that will educate you about the state of theoretical physics, math, and current ideas about our universe, written in an accessible, heartfelt manner, this is a great choice.
A good book........2006-10-19
A friend of mine recommended this book. He is a chemist and reads a lot of scientific books. This book is rather short (about 200 pages), but still worth picking up and reading.
The subjects covered in the book are very theoretical but Ms. Levin makes them very readable and understandable. The book is a collection of letters written by Ms. Levin to her mother in an attempt to explain some of the ideas that she works with on a daily basis.
I found Ms. Levin's writing to be very enjoyable. She explains complex concepts, and also part of her everyday life. This mix of physics and parts of her life are an interesting combination. They combine the abstract with the commonplace.
Even though I was disappointed when I finished this book because I had reached its end, I think the length of this book contributes to its success. If the reader wants to pursue the subjects presented in this book further (like I plan to do), there are plenty of other books out there about physics.
A decent first effort.......2005-05-11
In general, I am in complete agreement with those critical but supportive reviews below. As popular science, HUGIS is mediocre. Up to the last few chapters, in which Levin discusses her own scientific interests and contributions, the exposition is far inferior to other popular works on cosmology/relativity. (Among those which Levin cites at the beginning of her book I would single out Kip Thorne's Black Holes... as an exemplary introduction to the field, and a hugely entertaining piece of writing).
When, in due course, Levin does turn to her work -- topology -- HUGIS does get interesting. The book would have been much better, in my view, had Levin devoted the greater part of it to topology, and had she done so at greater depth. That said, the final chapters of HUGIS introduced me to a range of ideas I had not encountered before. I am very eager to learn more about Levin's and others' work in this highly abstruse subfield of astrophysics.
Science aside, a not insubstantial portion of HUGIS is taken up with various personal matters, mostly to do with Levin's (then) difficult relationship with a musician named Warren and her/their anguish about professional/geographic moves. Had the personal material in HUGIS had more to do with Levin's experiences as a scientist, a female scientist, etc., it would have greatly enriched her book and made the conceit of a book-as-a-series-of-letters worthwile. As it stands, however, the personal material in HUGIS was largely uninteresting and irrelevant, and transitions between Levin's personal reflections and her reflections on science were often forced and trite.
All that said, HUGIS is a quick and easy read. It is a decent and gentle introduction to some very difficult concepts. For those readers with little scientific background, it is a fine, abeit light, overview. For those with a deeper background, HUGIS has little to offer save for a sketchy but tantalizing introduction to the work (topology) with which Levin is mostly (and most passionately) engaged.
Another reviewer suggests that Levin had the makings of an excellent book, in HUGIS, had her editor only pushed her further. I agree. HUGIS is a respectable first foray into popular science writing. Here's hoping Levin continues to write and that she matures as a writer. I think she has tremendous potential.

Book Description
Arkansas has frequently been omitted from surveys of the South and from national history. One reason has been the limited archival resources; another, the absence of a university press. Recently, however, archives have proliferated, and a solid mass of scholarship has come from the University of Arkansas Press and the Arkansas Historical Society. This bibliography shows that there is no shortage of research materials on Arkansas. The only full bibliography on Arkansas, it provides an essential guide for historians and librarians wishing to bring Arkansas into the mainstream of America history. The volume provides a guide to the growing literature on Arkansas rich prehistory and to the pre-American colonial period, which lasted some 250 years. Two chapters focus on the statehood period. The volume then includes a series of topical chapters covering such subjects as minorities, business and economics, education, social history, and cultural and intellectual areas. There are also separate chapters on local and county history, general histories, archives and museums, and historic sites. The volume opens with a short chronology and provides subject and author indexes.

Book Description
Bill Clinton's own writings and speeches, as well as journal and newspaper articles about him, reflect his consistent long-term interest in key policy issues, such as job growth, economic development, worker training, health care, international trade, and education. This unique volume, providing sources of information on Clinton's earlier career, will facilitate background research on our current president. Covering the period from his first bid for public office in 1974 to the eve of his inauguration, this volume will also facilitate research on his Arkansas political career, his presidential campaign, and the transition period. The work is divided into three major parts. Part one opens with Clinton's own writings and speeches. It then covers his Arkansas political career from 1974 to October 3, 1991, when he announced his candidacy for president. The presidential campaign from October 4, 1991, to November 3, 1992, is covered in Part two, and Part three provides sources on the transition period from November 4, 1992 to the inauguration. Sources are arranged chronologically within sections, and access is enhanced by full author and subject indexes.
Book Description
This celebration of Naga culture, art, music, and way of life is the first comprehensive examination of the tribes that comprise the "World of the Naga." It contains a wealth of never-before-published images of Naga artworks from museums and private collections.
For centuries the Naga, composed of more than 30 individual tribes, have lived in relative isolation in the mountainous area of Northeast India upper Burma. This magnificent book explores the art and culture of the Naga peoples living in a remote region known as the "Last Great Mystery of Asia." Looking beyond the Nagas' past as fierce headhunters, it focuses on their unique way of life that rarely separates the spiritual from the social. Images of important festivals and ceremonies reveal a proud people whose animist beliefs and shamanic practices are displayed in gorgeous artwork, jewelry, costumes, traditional architecture and musical instruments.
Book Description
Cline recounts the development of quantum theory, capturing the atmosphere of argument and discovery among physicists in the 1920s. She explores the backgrounds of the major figures—Rutherford, Bohr, Planck, Einstein—separately, but draws them together as they begin to consider each other's questions about the nature of matter.
Customer Reviews:
The development of the Quantum Theory and its contrast to relativity are explored........2006-09-03
This book outlines the personalities of the major figures of physics, Rutherford, Bohr, Plank, Einstein, Schrodinger, Dirac, Born, etc. while explaining the development of quantum theory. The book also talks about relativity and compares it to quantum theory; that is, it compares the thought processes of the creators of both theories. To quote the book, 'in one important sense relativity theory is not a radical departure from traditional scientific thought. It does not challenge determinsim, the burning question, Erwin Schrodinger called it.' Quantum theory does challenge determinism; that is, in quantum theory, one cannot obtain exact information, and as a consequence, make exact predictions. This is due to the uncertainty principle of Heinsenberg. Einstein did not like this, and the book in the end details the conversations between Einstein and Bohr at the Solvay conference and beyond.
Excellent; Brings the characters to life!.......1999-05-11
The authors have done a great job with this book. Apart from explaining some of the Physical principles in "lay speak", they have also succeeded in conveying a deep sense of the human characters involved. The triumphs, the tribulations, the friendships and the intellectual rivalries - they are all here!
A delightful read - highly recommended to ALL with an interest in Science and DEFINATELY for those who wish to pursue the study of Physics.
Wonderful book.......1997-07-02
