      Book Description

A compelling book that examines Gordon Brown's rise to power, his years as Chancellor, and his dramatic decision to give the Bank of England independence

"An essential read for anyone who wants to properly understand political and economic policy developments over the past 15 years and enjoy some good insights about the future."

Neil Kinnock, Vice President of the European Commission and former leader of the Labour Party.

"For twenty years one of the most sceptical and authoritative voices on economic affairs in the British press."

      Robert Harris, best selling author.

"A splendidly vivid account of the background, outlook and record of the most powerful Chancellor of modern times."

Anthony Howard, biographer and political commentator.

The economic policy of new Labour has been fundamental to its success. Gordon Brown has been at the very heart of new Labour's economic policy since the late 1980s and has been highly instrumental in convincing both the British public and the City that a Labour government can run the economy responsibly. He has generally been a popular and well-respected Chancellor - during his early years in office, he was highly praised for his prudence and yet now, well into the second term of office many of the issues on which the Blair government was elected, such as health and education, have not yet been satisfactorily addressed, and Gordon Brown is now being criticised for what many see as his imprudence in handling the nationâs finances.

Examining how successful Labourâs economic policy has really been, when allowing for the good fortune of a world-wide economic boom, Keegan provides insights into the policies of new Labour, Gordon Brown's rise to power, the impact of his policies and how future policies might influence the economy.

William Keegan is Associate Editor (since 1983) and Economics Editor (since 1977) of The Observer newspaper. A graduate of Trinity College, Cambridge, he has previously held posts with the Financial Times, Daily Mail and Bank of England Economic Intelligence Department. He has sat on a range of advisory committees, including the BBC Advisory Committee on Business and Industrial Affairs, the Employment Institute Council and the Department of Economics Advisory Board, University of Cambridge. He is visiting Professor of Journalism at Sheffield University and is the author of a variety of successful books.

                    Book Description

Volcanic eruptions are generally viewed as agents of destruction, yet they provide the parent materials from which some of the most productive soils in the world are formed. The high productivity results from a combination of unique physical, chemical and mineralogical properties. The importance and uniqueness of volcanic ash soils are exemplified by the recent establishment of the Andisol soil order in Soil Taxonomy. This book provides the first comprehensive synthesis of all aspects of volcanic ash soils in a single volume. It contains in-depth coverage of important topics including terminology, morphology, genesis, classification, mineralogy, chemistry, physical properties, productivity and utilization. A wealth of data (37 tables, 81 figures, and Appendix) mainly from the Tohoku University Andisol Data Base is used to illustrate major concepts. Twelve color plates provide a valuable visual-aid and complement the text description of the world-wide distribution for volcanic ash soils.

This volume will serve as a valuable reference for soil scientists, plant scientists, ecologists and geochemists interested in biogeochemical processes occurring in soils derived form volcanic ejecta.

                      Description:
The effects of a white clover (Trifolium repens) living mulch on the soil detritus food-web during maize (Zea mays) culture were studied on Andosols for 2 years. In the first year, the use of white clover (W) and Italian ryegrass (I; Lolium multiflorum) was compared against the control treatment in the absence of fertilization. In the second year, combinations of white clover and inorganic fertilizers were studied. Bacterial and fungal substrate-induced respiration and the population densities of protozoa (flagellates, naked amoebae, ciliates), nematodes, and microarthropods (mites, collembolans) increased with the use of white clover living mulch. In the first year, nematode and microarthropod populations increased throughout the growing season in the living mulch plots. In the second year, the communities of soil organisms under the white clover living mulch had reached a more mature successional stage and were characterized by increased populations of organisms in the fungal pathway of organic matter decomposition and by a high population density of higher trophic groups (e.g., mesostigmatid mites and ciliates). The higher litter decomposition rate in the living mulch plots suggested that the function of the detritus food-web was enhanced under the living mulch system. On the other hand, inorganic fertilization only increased populations of nematodes and mesostigmatid mites in mid-summer, possibly owing to better maize growth, and had no effect on other soil organisms.

                        Description:
In Ethiopia land degradation in the forms of soil erosion and declining soil fertility are serious challenges to agricultural productivity and economic growth. Despite the general recognition of the threat from land degradation on agricultural productivity, few studies have been made to quantify the extent, rate and process of soil fertility depletion under various land use systems and management practices in the country. In this study we assessed soil chemical and physical property responses to deforestation and subsequent cultivation along a chronosequence of closely located farmlands of different ages (7, 10, 26, 34 and 53 years) since conversion from a tropical dry Afromontane natural forest in Ethiopia. These properties were compared with soil properties under an adjacent natural forest. The changes were used as indicators to evaluate the sustainability of the farm management. All the soils in the study were Mollic Andosols/Humic Haplustands. Soil bulk density (gcm^-^3) in the 0-10 and 10-20cm soil layers increased significantly while percent pore space decreased significantly in a continuum with increasing cultivation period. Soil C and total N contents (gkg^-^1) in the 0-10cm soil layer declined significantly and exponentially with increasing years under cultivation. However, in the 10-20cm soil layer both soil C and total N on the farmlands were significantly higher until after 34 years of continuous cultivation compared to the same soil layer under the natural forest. Consequently, the soil C stock (gm^-^2) of the upper 0.20m mineral soil was not significantly lower on the farmlands until after 26 years of continuous cultivation compared to the natural forest soil. Available P and K (mgkg^-^1) in the 0-10cm layer were higher in the soils of the farmlands throughout the 53 years of continuous cultivation compared to the soil under the natural forest. Exchangeable Ca, CEC and base saturation in the 0-10cm soil layer declined more or less throughout the cultivation period while in the 10-20cm soil layer they followed the patterns of soil C of that depth. Generally, the magnitudes and rates of degradation of the soil properties following conversion and subsequent cultivation were lower than expected for a low input tropical farming system as the one investigated. Nevertheless, almost all soil quality attributes showed overall declining trends in the long perspective. This continuous decline, albeit slowly, in soil quality with increasing cultivation period indicated that the present land management is not sustainable. Therefore, improved management is imperative to sustain the soil quality and maintain long-term productivity of the farmlands.

                          Description:
The carbon in soil pore water from a Histic Andosol from Western Iceland was studied at three different scales; in the field, in undisturbed outdoor mesocosms and in laboratory repacked microcosms. Pore water was extracted using suction cup lysimeters and hollow-fibre tube sampler devices (Rhizon samplers). There were significant differences in all measured variables, dissolved inorganic carbon (DIC), dissolved organic carbon (DOC) and pH values between the scales of the experiment. Gaseous constituents of soil solution and pH were more susceptible to changes in scale and the type of sampling devices used. Dissolved inorganic carbon concentrations did not differ significantly between field and mesocosm solutions but where up to 14 times lower in microcosms compared to mesocosms solutions. Rhizon samplers yielded solutions with up to 4.7 times higher DIC concentrations than porous cup lysimeters. Mesocosm surface horizon DOC concentrations were 20 and 2 times higher than in field and microcosms respectively. There was difference in DOC concentration between sampling methods (up to 8 times higher in suction cups than rhizon samplers) above 50 cm depth. Soil solution pH values did not differ between field and mesocosms and mesocosms and microcosms respectively down to 80 cm depth. Direct comparison between field and microcosms was not possible due to the nature of sampling devices. Soil solutions sampled with Rhizon samplers yielded lower pH values (up to 1.3 pH units) than those sampled with suction cups. Twenty percent of annually bound organic carbon at the soils surface under field conditions was lost by leaching of DOC and through decomposition to DIC in disturbed non-vegetated microcosms. This percentage increased to 38% in undisturbed vegetated mesocosms highlighting the importance of surface vegetation in importing carbon to soils. Increased influx of nutrients will increase growth and photosynthesis but decrease carbon sequestration in near surface horizons. Although field studies considering long-term anthropogenic changes in pedogenesis require considerable experimental duration, more rapid experiments can be conducted with confidence in micro- and mesocosms as in this research.

                            Description:
The retention of ^1^3^7Cs in various types of Andosols in Iceland was investigated. Soils were sampled at 29 sites with varying precipitation and environmental conditions. Samples were obtained from 0 to 5, 5 to 10, and 10 to 15cm depths. The amount of radiocaesium present was quite variable, ranging between 300 and 4800Bqm^-^2 and correlated closely to total annual precipitation (r^2=0.71). The majority of ^1^3^7Cs, 82.7% on average, was retained in the uppermost 5cm of the soil. The greatest penetration of ^1^3^7Cs was observed for organic Histosols (76.3% in top 5cm). The Icelandic Vitrisols (barren, poorly developed Andosols) are coarse grained with only 2-5% clay content and contain little organic matter ( <1%). Yet these soils retained 74% of ^1^3^7Cs in the top 5cm. The results indicate that radiocaesium fallout is strongly retained by colloidal materials characteristic of Andosols, such as allophane and ferrihydrite. Most soils in Iceland are subject to severe and prolonged freezing and waterlogging; despite this, ^1^3^7Cs is retained in the upper soil horizons and vertical migration is negligible in Icelandic Andosols. However, erosion and aeolian activity can markedly influence the amount and vertical distribution of radiocaesium in Icelandic soils.

                              Description:
Depletion of soil organic matter (SOM) is a major component of soil degradation that threatens the sustainability of smallholder farming systems in Ethiopia. In this study, soil organic carbon (SOC) and total nitrogen (N) dynamics following deforestation and subsequent cultivation were evaluated using natural abundance of ^1^3C and ^1^5N along a farm field chronosequence cleared from tropical dry Afromontane forest in south central Ethiopia. Soil samples were collected from five closely located farm fields cultivated for 7, 10, 26, 34 and 53 years after clearance and from an adjacent natural forest soil. All the soils in the study were Mollic Andosols/Humic Haplustands. The @d^1^3C values of the SOC of the farm fields in the 0-10 and 10-20cm layers were significantly elevated compared to the natural forest soil. In the 0-10cm layer, the lowest @d^1^3C value of -23.17%%+/-0.36 was recorded from the natural forest soil and the highest value of -15.7%%+/-1.50 from the 53-year-old farm field. Fractionation of the SOC of the bulk soil based on the @d^1^3C values showed that in the 0-10cm layer the SOC of the forest origin declined by 74.6%, which is equivalent to 54.1 Mg C ha^-^1 or 740kgha^-^1year^-^1, where as SOC input from the agricultural crops was low (240kgha^-^1year^-^1). However, part of the SOC of the forest origin lost from the surface 0-10cm soil layer was translocated to the 10-20cm layer. The SOC derived natural forest approached steady state around 30 years after cultivation while the SOC derived from agricultural crops reached steady state already after 10 years. The results show that the remaining forest derived SOC is recalcitrant while the SOC derived from agricultural crops has a relatively short mean residence time. The soils of the farm fields also showed increasing @d^1^5N values indicating a loss of N from the system. The increasing @d^1^5N values were consistent with the loss of total N along the chronosequence. A continued loss of N combined with insufficient input of fertilizer will result in a decreased productivity of the studied farming systems.

5 out of 5 stars Very easy to follow........2005-11-17

I've read several books concerning Biology and this by far is the best of them all. One The thing that makes this book stand out from the other biology texts, is it's easy to read feel. While most biology textbooks offer standard information about the subject, this textbook takes a more informal route. Mixing past information about how certain biological findings came about with detailed explanations of biology, Morton gives the reader a deeper understanding of the subject. The book also gives analogys and easy to decipher explanations that give you a better understanding.

I inherited this lab manual when I started teaching physical geology this semester, and I told my students to return it to the bookstore. It contains factual errors (such as referring to hornblende and other non-metallic minerals as metallic, which they are not - metallic minerals are opaque in thin section), and the pedagogy is highly questionable. In the rock and mineral sections, it relies too heavily on photographs. Students already have a tendency to want to simply match minerals and rocks to pictures, which doesn't work, and this book encourages this. The book is too much talk and not enough action. Students in a lab should be guided to work with objects, not to simply answer questions out of a book. There is too much explanation provided, with little left for students to figure out on their own. Labs should be presented to students as mysteries to be solved, and this book takes all the mystery out of everything.

This "lab manual" is VERY thick and far too wordy. Really, it's more of a spiral-bound textbook than a lab manual. Additionally, the lab questions appear in list format at the end of each section, so there is virtually no standardized answersheet for students to record their work on. That not only makes it harder on the students, but efficient grading is nearly impossible unless the instructor makes his/her own taylor-made answer sheets for the students to use on EACH lab. As if that weren't bad enough, the lab manual's companion web site is horrid. I am amazed that the AGI and the NAGT produced this lab manual.

I bought this book for school, since my school was out of the book and this one was cheaper. It does the job, it is probably less expensive than your school, and you can't get a used one because usually some of the pages you need are missing.

Publishers are driving me nuts with their inflated prices...they made a small number of edition #6 which was considered their best one and then let their supplies run out so that schools would have to buy their "new" one. After flipping through it, it is clear that it is nearly identical to the sixth edition lab manual. Such a waste.

Geoscience Laboratory has been revised for 2004. Many college students these days enter college with no earth science background, then find they are required to take a science lab course. Geoscience Laboratory addresses this deficiency by using many 'real world' examples and geology in the news as example of geological principles. Geoscience Laboratory encourages students to answer questions based on the materials they have studied, not merely to look up answers in the book. Exercises in this book have been extensively tested in a real university setting before publication. The book attempts to serve two audiences--students for whom a basic geology course is their only college level lab science, as well as potential majors taking their first college class, and, from a teaching assistant's point of view, does a good job as the basis for the lab classwork.

I used this lab manual in a college geology class. The book is terrible. The lab questions are absurd and rarely pertain to the reading. There is a page that is completly missing text. Two questions are supposed to refer to the text. I would not recomend this book to anyone. I would advise people against using it.

                                                                      • These timeless, charming, and humorous tales have survived through the centuries and have resurfaced in most of our popular moral fables.

                                                                      • These tales have received the highest praise from authors of some of the world's finest literature.

The tales of Kalila and Dimna from the Fables of Bidpai originated almost 2000 years ago in a Sanskrit collection of animal stories called the Panchatantra. These charming and humorous stories have found their way in one form or another into the folklore of every major culture and tradition. They have influenced all our fables from Aesop to La Fontaine, including Uncle Remus, The Arabian Nights, and The Canterbury Tales.

Here the first two books of the Panchatantra's five are brilliantly rendered by Ramsay Wood in a captivating, contemporary version that can be read on many levels. These stories within stories ostensibly constitute a handbook for rulers, but in their slyly profound grasp of human nature they are clearly meant as helpful guidance for us all. These are tales that will be treasured by young and old alike. In addition, the tales are graced with Margaret Kilrenny's beautiful illustrations based on paintings in rare Arabic manuscripts.
