Closed-End Investment Companies (CEICs) have experienced a significant revival of interest, both as investment vehicles and as the subject of academic research, over the past decade. This academic research has focused on the nature of closed-end funds' discounts and premiums and on the share price behavior of these firms. The first book by the authors, "Closed-End Investment Companies: Issues and Answers," addresses closed-end fund academic articles published prior to 1991. This second book addresses those articles that have appeared since that time.
Closed-End Fund Pricing: Theories and Evidence is designed for the academic researcher interested in CEICs and the practitioner interested in using CEICs as an investment vehicle. The authors summarize the evolution of CEICs, present the factors thought to cause CEIC shares to trade at different levels from their net asset values, provide a complete survey of the recent academic literature on this topic, and summarize the current state of research on CEICs.

Charging for the use of transport infrastructure has very different traditions in the various modes, reflecting the different nature of their infrastructure (nodal vs. linear), but also different historical traditions of open access, system integration, etc.

Since the early 90's various European Commission initiatives took on this issue, looking mainly at the road sector, where many countries had no (direct) access charges. Heavy goods vehicles were systematically identified as the primary targets for a renewed approach to this problem.

What seemed an easy catch has proved to be much harder, with the various countries adopting almost exclusively national approaches, and the European institutions unable to drive the process.

This book looks at the challenges posed by this objective, recognising that there are multiple objectives for application of road tolls and charges, and discussing the various possible solutions, in the technical, institutional and legal dimensions. The multiplicity of national situations in Europe is put in perspective, the impacts of various charging schemes on regional development and on the environment are estimated, and the recent policy process is analysed, allowing a global view of the remaining difficulties and to make recommendations about the next steps in the process.

This volume comprises fifteen papers exploring the consequences of applying modern time-series methods, particularly co-integrated time-series methods, for the analysis of forest economics problems. The methods represent the forefront of econometrics in this area, and the volume is the first of its kind.
An introductory paper explains the econometrics of unit-root processes. Much of what follows in the other papers depends upon only a few of the ideas presented in the introduction. The volume includes tests of, e.g., the Law of One Price, land valuation models, demand and supply models, Granger-causality, and forecast models.
The reader will learn a great deal about forest economies, particularly in Northern Europe, and about the practical use of modern time-series methods. The methods presented are applicable to other fields of economics.
The volume is aimed at researchers in applied economics and as a supplement to (advanced) theoretical textbooks, mainly in Natural Resource Economics.

When I browsed the Academic Press title, "Environmental Magnetism: Principles and Applications of Enviromagnetics", at the AGU meeting in San Francisco this past December, I thought the term 'enviromagnetics' was presumptous -- just like a Aussie-Canadian (Evans) to spam new techno-babble. That was before I put my credit card down (at a 20% show discount!) and cracked it open at my hotel. Well, yes, I have been enlighted -- Ted Evans and Friedrich Heller are justified in coining the term ENVIROMAGNETICS -- this book delivers and how: It truly is an indispensable reference work for undergraduates, researchers, lecturers, and professionals in geomagnetism, geology, pedology, archaeology, oceanography, climatology, and earth system science. In a macadamia shell, their writing is clear and accessible. Thanks guys, with your talent you should write a general geophysics textbook.

The seminal history of the pre-removal Cherokee Nation.......2004-11-13

This is THE seminal history of the Cherokee Nation prior to removal. Written by a professor of religious history at Brown University, it is easy to see how he got swept away from his area of expertise and into the amazingly interesting story of the early years of the Cherokee Nation.

McLoughlin does not romaticize the Cherokee Nation, as many other historians do, but tells a clear story of a complicated time and place. His research is impeccable, and the book is well written. As to the merit of his historical analysis, it is mind-numbingly and brilliantly ground-breaking: the sort of stuff that a historian goes his entire life looking to discover. All that I can say is that this book completely changed the direction of my personal study and when I get a PhD in early American History with a concentration on the Cherokee Nation, it will be entierly due to this book.

I also heartily recomend "Cherokees and Missionairies." McLoughlin also has a very good essay on Samuel Worcester in the book "Massachusetts and the New Nation" which is a major undiscovered gem.

30 years of Cherokee History.......2003-10-08

From 1794 until 1834 the Cherokee Nation underwent a change unlike any civilization in the world, past, present or future. It is this time period on which the book focuses. The author covers the years before and after his "Cherokee Renascence" in the first and final chapter.

When people write the history of the Cherokee in Georgia it is understandable that they concentrate on the years leading up to the "Trail of Tears." This tragic event overshadows the history of this Nation, and as William McLoughlin shows us, it is a history rich with acheivement and accomplishment, from the development of a written language by Sequoyah to the adaptation of that language by a majority of the Nation in a 6-month time frame, establishment of a government and newspaper (the Cherokee Phoenix, first American Indian newspaper) and many other accomplishments.

McLoughlin does not pull punches, as many who cover the time period and he does not have an agenda. He accurately recounts the details of the flourishing civilization while describing the evolution of a second society, those who disagreed with the decidedly nationalistic moves of its leaders to protect itself against the desires of the United States and the government of Georgia. Interestingly, Sequoyah was one of the Cherokee against the movement towards nationalism.

A compelling read, factually backed and well researched.

A gripping history.......1998-02-18

A comprehensive history of the Cherokees up to the Trail of Tears. This history covers the building of a great nation that was able to maintain its own culture while integrating with the developing America, and its subsequent downfall.

One Of The Worst Books I've Ever Read.......2007-08-05

I read this book three years ago. It was the first and last book I read by this author. I read many thriller books and quite honestly, I'm pretty easy to please. In fact, this is about the only Thriller book that I didn't enjoy at all in the last 5 years. This is my first review and I'm writing it because I don't want people see the 5 star reviews and waste their time with this book. It's truly awful. It started off okay and then the characters and the plot take a horrible nosedive. I've never felt so cheated out of my time.

This was another great Woods' book.......2006-07-29

I listen to most of Stuart Woods' books on tape and really enjoy them. This one was a particularly good one and carried you along from the first page to the last. Obviously, the suspected villain may not be the true culprit, but then when are they? It was a great story of stalking a celebrity and it was chilling. I thought the book was great, but then I've become a Woods' fan because none of his books are ever boring.

Disappointed But Not Ready to Give Up.......2004-04-05

(...) unfortunately I started with Dead Eyes. I felt as though I was reading a suspense story from a beginner romance novelist. The dialogue at times was laughable and I agree with another reviewer that the ending was thrown together. The few sex scenes were like something from Barbara Cartland. My biggest complaint was the portrayal of the cop Jon Larsen - he came off as an incompetent dolt. Through the entire book, the stalker was one step ahead of him to the very end. However, this writer gets such high praise from other reviewers that I'm not quite ready to quit and plan on checking out the Stone Barrington series.

Don't miss this book. Trust me........2003-10-20

This is the 15th Stuart Woods book I have read. I can't believe that anybody who is even a semi-Stuart Woods fan could have put this book down. It is the first Woods book that I read from noon to midnight and could not stop reading it. I grant you, this is not your typical Stuart Woods, but almost a combination of King and Woods. He went all out on this one. And I loved every word of it. Read it and you'll see. This is not for the faint of heart. It kept me riveted. P.S. You might want to check the locks on your doors and windows before reading this.

Not So Good for Woods..........2003-01-30

I am so glad that this was not the first Stuart Woods book that I had read, because I probably would not have continued on. Stuart Woods is a superb writer, however, this book is not some of his finest work. The story is set around an actress who is about to make it big, her gay hairdresser, her stalker, and the police detective who is helping her with the stalker. All of the characters seem very flat and are never fully developed. I would have never guessed the ending to the book only because Woods never steered the story toward the ending that occurred. It was almost as if he thought to himself, I need an ending and he just shoved it in without making sure that it flowed or made any sense. Kind of a disappointment after reading the whole book. If this is your first time reading Woods, I would suggest one of his Stone Barrington series novels which starts with "New York Dead". One of the best in this series is "Worst Fears Realized" or "Swimming to Catalina." After reading some of his other books, you will realize that this one was just a miss for him.
