Book Description
all Street stands alone as America's preeminent finan-cial institution, serving the world's largest economy's needs for capital, risk management, and advising. Why then does it continue to fail in these roles so miserably? Through personal experiences and anecdotes, Erik Banks shows how Wall Street continues to make mistakes in raising capital, granting corporate and personal advice, managing risk, and acting as a trusted fiduciary. All is not lost, however. There are ways to address these problems, and The Failure of Wall Street explains what they are. By fostering greater deregulation and competition, creating more transparency, and implementing stronger oversight procedures, it is possible to stem the tide of failures. These solutions, while not quick, easy, or cheap to implement, will help make Wall Street become the sound, consistent, and efficient financial expert it is meant to be, making this book a must read for anyone concerned about a healthy financial future.

Wall street and Greed, or should I say profit maximisation........2005-07-07
The book highlights numerous failings of wall street, and the role regulators play in disciplining the street. A useful read for all kind of investors, sophisticated or otherwise. It is also a useful read for current and aspiring wall street employees, as it will lift the veil of some of the dodgy business that invariable happens on the street, hopefully keeping them on the straight and not too narrow (as rightly said in the book many times, risk is risky).

Book Description
One of the problems in global water management is the sharing of watercourses by neighbouring countries, a situation that continues to lead to many long-lasting conflicts. The authors of this book make a valuable contribution to ongoing attempts to find sustainable solutions to this problem and to the debate on global water scarcity in general. They examine the law and practice relating to co-operation between Finland, Sweden and Norway with respect to international watercourses, and provide an analysis of numerous bilateral and multilateral instruments, which demonstrate that even between States with different political and social systems and different policy goals, co-operation with respect to water can also be beneficial to all parties. The authors also examine the wider regional co-operation between these Nordic countries and Russia; co-operation which provides a blueprint for watercourse co-operation in other regions of the world. This book will appeal to both practitioners and academics.

Book Description
This is a biography of farmer and writer A.G. Street, written by his daughter Pamela.
Book Description
This valuable reference book is unique in its coverage of examples from the geological sciences, many centred on applications to mineral exploration. The underlying principles of GIS are stressed and emphasis placed on the analysis and modelling of spatial data with applications to site selection and potential mapping. The book commences with a definition of GIS and describes a case study of mapping mineral potential. The ways in which spatial data are organized with models (raster, vector, relational) are discussed and data structures, such as quadtrees and topological structures are introduced. Data input including digitizing, geographic projections and conversions is covered together with output (visualization, representation of colour and spatial query). Spatial data transformations are dealt with thoroughly and attention is paid to map analysis and modelling as related to single maps, map pairs and multiple maps respectively. Methods of quantifying the associations between pairs of maps are emphasized. Finally, examples of landfill site selection and mineral potential mapping illustrate the application of map algebra for combining maps and tables with models, employing Boolean logic, index weighting, fuzzy logic and probability methods such as weights of evidence. There is an extensive glossary of terms, and references accompany each chapter. Contains 40 pages of colour illustrations.
Customer Reviews:
Great text for learning GIS in the Geosciences.......2000-01-02
This book is a great library addition for those interested in the use of GIS in geosciences. Most of the examples are given from the SPANS program but translate easily into other software. Reading the book will give you a good understanding of aspects of spatial analysis in the Geosciences. There is a lot of detail and good examples.

Book Description
On a warm summer night in Oslo, Martin draws Stella into one of the risky games that have defined their ten years together: a balancing act on the edge of their rooftop, nine stories up. Amid the shouts of horrified onlookers, Stella stumbles, falling for a moment into Martin’s arms before plummeting to her death. (Did he try to save her?)
So begins Linn Ullmann’s transfixing tale of Stella—jealous wife, forbearing lover, angelic nurse, unloved daughter, devoted mother, and finally, a woman possessed of a secret now for-ever lost to the living. As Stella’s life unfolds in the recollections of those she has left behind, we observe the fabric of many lives unraveling. And as Stella herself bears witness from a place beyond death, we come to understand how precarious her life was behind its facade of loveliness and order.
With a quiet power,
Stella Descending gives us the backlit dailiness—and the dark metaphysical underworld—of life in a fabled metropolis. And in brilliantly evoking the loneliness that haunts all our intimacies, it becomes a fable of life everywhere.
Customer Reviews:
Amazing, thought-provoking read!.......2005-01-03
I read and loved Before You Sleep five years ago and I cannot believe that I waited this long to read another Linn Ullmann novel. The Scandinavian author is known for writing strange, imaginative literature with a great deal of magic realism. Her novels are more fables than anything else. She has once again floored me with Stella Descending. This dark story set in Oslo, Norway, centers on the mystery surrounding a married couple. Martin and Stella are on a rooftop where she plummets to her death. No one knows how it happened. Did she lose her footing, or did her husband kill her? Further speculations begin. Were Martin and Stella happy? How do their children feel about their parents? Martin is quite an enigmatic individual. He neither admits fault nor defends himself against the allegations. What transpires is a disarming story that centers on marriage, family and fidelity (or lack thereof). There are a lot of twists in this novel.
Linn Ullmann uses different kinds of narrative throughout the novel. Even Stella narrates part of the novel after her death. Not only is the story told in various points of view, there are several stories within the story, fables as such, and has some rather bizarre magic realism and disarming erotica to boot. She did this with Before You Sleep, and it can be quite confusing if you don't follow the story. But that is what I love about this author. Ms. Ullmann writes with beautiful, stark prose. Her novels have a mixture of brutal truth and confounded metaphors. She is like Amanda Filipacchi in that she writes obscure, complex stories with magical realism and dark humor in the mix. This novel is though provoking to the max -- one that you will think about for days to come. I for one have placed this in my re-read pile. Are you in the bargain for a deep, literary read? I recommend Stella Descending.
mystery-esque and character-driven: read in one sitting.......2004-01-06
Linn Ullmann seems to have a great talent for character development, and Stella Descending survives on that talent. The psychology of Stella, and the psychological testimonies of those who surround her and affect her eventual, final fate provide for a captivating, well-executed mystery-esque novel. Slightly reminiscent of "Smilla's Sense of Snow," but with more personal intrigue than physical adventure. An enjoyable read; great for one sitting.

Book Description
Recorded history is a finely-woven magic fabric of intricate lies about events predating the sixteenth century. There is not a single piece of evidence that can be reliably and independently traced back earlier than the eleventh century. This book details events that are substantiated by hard facts and logic, and validated by new astronomical research and statistical analysis of ancient sources.

Calculations are only as good as your numbers.......2007-08-03
Yes, we can all agree that mainstream history is nearly 100% BS due to politics, economics, ego, problems with dating techniques, and various conspiracies. Agreed. But, I've been researching the distinct possibility that human history (in terms of civilizations) are much more ancient than we've been told, so coming across this book was very interesting to me. I wondered how Fomenko could be wrong (if at all) because he is very persuasive in his presentations. Then it dawned on me. If at previous times in prehistory, due to the various catastrophies that are well documented (comets, asteroids, planetary disruptions, plasma discharge, pole reversals, etc) the Earth was in a different position in relation to the sun, different tilt on its axis, different orbit, different rotation (in terms of velocity and DIRECTION), and the continents were in different positions, then would this not cause the ancients to see the sky (constellations) differently? In other words, is Fomenko making erronious assumptions about the physics of the Earth in pre-history, which then corrupt his data with regards to dating the relevant astrology? The last event to seriously disrupt our planet occured roughly 3500 years ago, according to other good researchers, so is it possible Fomenko has been confused by this? The vastly different physics of our planet in the not so distant past may explain this confusion, which is not to say the "mainstream" version of history is correct; on the contrary. I am not an expert in these fields, but wanted to see if this idea could spark discussion.
Pants on fire?.......2007-07-19
Will people ever read before spamming? Yes, Jesuits could not rewrite world history alone, they had help. Anyway, Dr Prof Acad A.Fomenko does not point to jesuits as the driving force of world wide history manipulation in published volumes 1,2,3;, actually he barely mentions the poor devils. Check it with 'Search inside' feature, please. China is rarely mentioned either, in fact, Dr Fomenko is completely eurocentric. Right, his theory contradicts all mainstream schools of history, because in their actual state they are all built on blatantly erroneus chronology. You don't need a mysterious cabal (conspiracy) to falsify history, the falsification is its modus operandi. It is inherent to history(ians) to falsify (distort) events, as it is inherent to humans to boast as it is inherent to power (authority) to legimize itself by referrring to glorious past made to its own order. Dr Prof Fomenko and team have identified scores of instances of such manipulation in Russian, European, etc.. history, and delivered valid statistical proof thereof. His own 'reconstruction' is completely another story. Forget c14 as a valid method of dating. W.Libby has initially discovered a brilliant method of INDEPENDENT dating. Too bad, c14 method has become a joke after a forced marrige with dendrochronology with consensual chronological scale inbuilt. Radiocarbon method can't stand blind tests, but is so very productive as a rubberstamp.
Accepted History & Chronology Must Be Changed. .......2007-04-09
There is no doubt that history as most know it is a sham, & institution's version of History both University & Church is fradulent & inaccurate. Everything was established with an agenda, The real "Dark Ages" are now when we have access to incredible amounts of information past authorities & more important 'common folk' didn't have but our institutions & educators are slow to evolve because of what has ignorantly & arrogantly been taught for too long. This is on many subjects not just Chronology.
For anyone to question "Why would a Mathematician have anything credible to say of History?" The answer is from Dr. Fomenko's preface in the book: "It would be worthwhile to remind the reader that in the XVI-XVII century Chronology was considered to be a subdivision of Mathematics." These volumes could possibly be some of the most important works to date & should be read by everyone with an interest in History, especially professors & educators who have a duty to the public. I have read both books & must say that 'Chronology 1' has some very eye opening & revolutionary information. Even if these volumes are part true the implications are profound & opens the doors to further investigations & questions which must be done. I speak several different lanquages & must say the logic Dr. Fomenko uses with "inflection" of words & words being read from left to right in one region & right to left in another then written backwards, the removal of vowels & get down to basics of words, or different cities & locations having the same name etc. is correct. Vowel usage has always been optional & varied, actually complicating linquistics & study. The first thing one has to understand is that words never had a fixed spelling in history like we do now, the spelling of words was mutable & regional, as well as names & titles of people were vast, varied & changed, NOTHING WAS FIXED or understood linear. Matters of Life & Death as well as financial profiteering yesterday & today were & are made with ignorant, illogical & conspiratorial views of history & reality, it's time people get closer to the Truth & society collectively grow up.
Very Interesting.......2007-03-07
It is a good proposal and I believe it will mature into something even better in the future. I think it deserves to be read.
History as Science Fiction.......2007-01-10
Anatoly Fomenko has written a very intriguing book, full of pictures, charts, and computer 'proof' of his thesis: backwards of AD900 we don't really know what happened or when. Between AD900 and AD1600 there is more certainty, but there is still a lot of fuzzy ground, and things don't get reliable until we get past the 1600's where the printing press made it very difficult for the perpetrators of this timeline manipulation to change anything that had been committed to print. The Dark Ages did not happen. Books were burned for a reason. One organization has doubled the actual length of its existence by expanding the real chronology. Read why.
I had always wondered why Christ died about AD33 and yet men waited until the 11th century to form the Knights Templar, the Cathars, etc and go after the Holy Land by force. Why the 1000 year gap? Turns out there wasn't more than a 10-12 year gap and he proves it using astronomy. This also implies that the planet is not as old as we have been told, and current Christian and other creationist scientists are already championing that idea without being aware of Fomenko's book. The two groups, creationist scientists and the Russian mathematical analysts corroborate each other. Fascinating.
Of course, all this flies in the face of what we have been told traditionally is the 'proper' chronology of western civilization, and most readers will experience 'cognitive dissonance' in reading this book. It means that our history going backwards from AD1600 becomes progressively more incorrect and unreliable until it cannot be trusted at all... in the space of 700-800 years.
Naturally, the curious, open-minded reader will want to know WHO did this, WHY, and did any of the events we think of as really ancient ever happen?
Dr. Fomenko is a respected scientist/mathematician at Moscow State University who has already answered these questions to the satisfaction of his initially skeptical colleagues. Most of them are now believers, a few still refuse to believe (the usual diehards), and of course the western press has ignored Fomenko's work -- for obvious reasons when you read the book. The ones who perpetrated this chronology ruse have a lot to answer for. They are still with us. That's why this book is a well-kept secret.
I gave the book a 4-star rating because I was unable to check out some of his claims; those I checked were as he said. But if even 1/3 of his claims are true, this punches a big hole in what we think is our history, the meaning of western civilization, our educational process (for repeating the ruse as gospel), and the trustworthiness of the organization that perpetrated this ruse, well-intentioned or not.
This book relates to current research into a Young Earth paradigm, to John Keel's discoveries about our planet, and Fr Malachi Martin's insights (in his now out-of-print books). We are indeed sheep who are manipulated and kept ignorant -- for a reason. While knowing what these men have to say may be the "booby prize" (as in: 'what can you do with this knowledge?'), it will provide interesting reading. Didn't someone say: "...and the Truth will set you free."?? For you to judge if this book contains the truth.

Book Description
India is a land of enormous diversity. Cross-cultural influences are everywhere in evidence, in the food people eat, the clothes they wear, and in the places they worship. This was ever the case, and at no time more so than in the India that existed from 1200 to 1750, before the European intervention. This beautifully illustrated book takes the reader on a journey across the political, religious and cultural landscapes of medieval India. It is fluently composed, with a cast of characters that will educate students and general readers alike.
Customer Reviews:
Lovely.......2007-07-18
This is an excellent book of lucid essays that helps orient one to Indian history. Splendid on political history, art and religion.I greatly enjoyed reading it.
India 1200-1750 .......2007-04-02
It must be pointed out that books on India History seem to be rather scarce if compared to other civilizations (such as China, Islam or Europe). So when I found this book I decide it to give it a chance, in despite of not finding previous comments on it.
I have the impression that Asher and Talbot want to cover its subject with a new approach, and for that they blend the following matters in a peculiar way: (i) politics, (ii) architecture as a tool for power to display and claim legitimacy (they spent many interesting pages describing mosques, palaces, temples, shrines and so on); (iii) court and elite culture. If compared to other more common explanation schemes, economics are treated succinctly. No data on the way the common folk lived are provided. Besides, the authors stress that presenting Islam and Hinduism as confronted realities would be an anachronic simplification laden with present-day political views.
All that (and much more that I do not mention in this summary) is developed in 300 pages, the book being divided in the following chapters: 1.- Introduction: situating India. 2.- The expansion of Turkic power, 1180-1350. 3.- Southern India in the Age of Vijayanagara, 1350-1550. 4.- North India between empires: history, society, and culture, 1350-1550. 5.- Sixteenth-century North India: empire reformulated. 6.- Expanding political and economic spheres, 1550-1650. 7.- Elite cultures in seventeenth-century South Asia. 8.- Challenging central authority, 1650-1750. 9.- Changing socio-economic formations, 1650-1750. Epilogue. Biographical notes. Bibliography (no footnotes are include in the text).
The book is no very engaging, but it is not dry either. It can be savoured by the professional historian, and, perhaps, by the educated layperson too. Therefore, my rate is between 5 (content) and 3 (pleasure, sometimes falling to 2, sometimes raising to 4).
Other book that I would recommend to read would be "Gem in the Lotus: The Seeding of Indian Civilisation" by Abraham Eraly. "Al-Hind" by Andre Wink (an intended work in five volumes, three of which have already been published) also seems interesting (although I have not read it yet). And, above all, I would reccomend "The Shape of Ancient Thought: Comparative Studies in Greek and Indian Philosophies" by Thomas McEvilley.
