      Book Description

This book reveals significant lessons on how economic prosperity was secured for people over three decades in eight Asian countries. It focuses on the careful way in which these nations designed and implemented pro-growth, liberal economic and financial policies. A new phenomenon - namely financial fragility - in the more liberalized fast growth Asian economies is also examined. The authors explore why only some of the early reformers among China, India, Indonesia, Korea, Malaysia, Pakistan, Singapore, and Thailand succumbed to a serious financial crisis in 1997 while others did not. They also analyze the impact of policies implemented by the crisis-hit economies, either under the IMF restructuring programs or independent pursuit of capital and currency controls. The book goes on to identify the weaknesses of the banking sector in order to explain the reasons behind the financial crisis. The book concludes with lessons for other emerging economies undertaking economic and financial development through liberalization. These examples reveal policies that could be prescribed in order to prevent future problems. Focusing on post-crisis reforms and their policy impacts, and on post-crisis evaluation of restructuring implemented in the financial sector, this book will appeal to academics and those with specific interests in Asian studies and/or banking and finance. Policymakers - in particular those at central banks and treasuries - along with professionals in financial institutions and multinational firms, will find the book to be a fascinating read.

          Book Description

In this powerful and disturbing book, Rogers Smith traces political struggles over U.S. citizenship laws from the colonial period through the Progressive era and shows that throughout this time, most adults were legally denied access to full citizenship, including political rights, solely because of their race, ethnicity, or gender.

Civic Ideals is a book every american should read.Prof.Smith has demonstrated clearly how trough history the United States have had diferents meanings about the citizenship. In the case of Puerto Rico-the last colony of the world-we the Puerto Ricans have a second-class citizenship. The author sumarize very well our case with the insular cases and Balzac vs. People of Puerto Rico. Also Smith analize the legal debate in the Harvard Law Review, but do not mention the Yale Law Journal(Adams,Elmer B.,"The Causes and Results of Our War with Spain from a legal Standpoint."VII(1899),pag.119 and Parker,Le Roy,"The Constitution of Porto Rico",X (1901),pag.136.)and Columbia Law Review;Fuller,Paul,"Some Constitutional Questions Suggested by Recent Acquisitions"I(1901),pag.108).For people who want to know the real constitutional history of The United States this book is excellent. Is one of my favorites books.

This is one of the few books that I have started and then quit part way through. I had to force myself to continue reading after about page 50 and then quit at 200. It was very dry content and read too much like a doctoral dissertation. In addition, assumptions were made about the readers knowledge of court cases related to civic rights.

          Book Description

Most people understand property as something that is owned, a means of creating individual wealth. But in Commodity and Propriety, the first full-length history of the meaning of property, Gregory Alexander uncovers in American legal writing a competing vision of property that has existed alongside the traditional conception. Property, Alexander argues, has also been understood as proprietary, a mechanism for creating and maintaining a properly ordered society. This view of property has even operated in periods—such as the second half of the nineteenth century—when market forces seemed to dominate social and legal relationships.

In demonstrating how the understanding of property as a private basis for the public good has competed with the better-known market-oriented conception, Alexander radically rewrites the history of property, with significant implications for current political debates and recent Supreme Court decisions.

1 out of 5 stars Hypes minor legal thinkers, misrepresents major ones.......2000-03-28

Alexander's book reads like a standard history of property law turned upside down; it is as if the footnotes and text had been reversed. He glorifies obscure, minor, and in many cases simply bizarre theorists of American property law. Conventional wisdom holds that the winners write the history; in this case Alexander not only writes the losers' version of history but argues that they haven't even lost. To understand the thrust of the book, consider that although it contains 386 pages of text and another 82 pages of endnotes, it presents no substantive discussion of the takings clause of the Fifth Amendment, despite (or perhaps because of) that clause's seemingly unambiguous constitutional affirmation of the "property as commodity" view (Richard A. Epstein, Takings: Private Property and the Power of Eminent Domain). John Locke gets only a handful of passing mentions. By contrast, the views of many obscure and long-forgotten theorists receive extended discussion.

In many cases when Alexander actually does discuss major historical figures, his interpretations of their views are incorrect. For instance, Alexander reprises the old story that Thomas Jefferson was actually a "civic republican," rather than a believer in the liberal theory of property (chap. 1). He rejects the contrary opinion of the historian Joyce Appleby ("What Is Still American in Jefferson's Political Philosophy?" in her Liberalism and Republicanism in the Historical Imagination) because--you guessed it--she does not think dialectically: "I view Jefferson's writing as consistently preoccupied with the same basic dialectic, a dialectic of stability and dynamism. Professor Appleby's commitment to a linear framework prevents her from seeing it dialectically" (p. 392 n. 12). Subsequent historical research has tended to confirm Appleby's understanding of Jefferson and to cast further doubt on Alexander's characterization of Jefferson as a civic republican (see John Majewski, A House Dividing: Economic Development in Pennsylvania and Virginia before the Civil War).

In the end, Alexander's attempt to construct a dialectic between his two visions of property fails. He has written a book describing the views of some dissenters from the dominant American view of property as commodity. A dialectic requires two evenly balanced and coherent positions. The thinkers described by Alexander are an incoherent grab-bag of minor and uninfluential thinkers of varying quality who do not constitute a coherent philosophical or legal tradition, but rather a desire to justify governmental incursions on liberty and private property rights. Some actually may have been sincere civic republicans; most simply mouthed republican jargon as a cover for private rent-seeking. Few of them added anything valuable to the historical and contemporary debate over property. Send these guys back to the footnotes, where they belong.

            Book Description

The Métis people of Canada are experiencing a coming of age, a new beginning. Weary of living below the poverty line, amid poor social conditions, and with minimal educational opportunities, for the past several decades their leaders have addressed these issues with an increasingly effective voice. Frustrated at having been ignored for so long by historians and the government bureaucrats, they have fought hard to obtain what they deem to be their legal right to status as Aboriginal people. We Are Included! provides the historical background necessary to understanding the long struggle of the Métis. Having won their case in the Supreme Court of Canada in September, 2003, the decision has given new hope to the Métis people.

                Book Description

In this readable yet sophisticated survey of treaty-making between Native and European Americans before 1800, Robert A. Williams, Jr. argues that Native Americans were active participants in the crafting of a shared legal culture. Legal historians have too often depicted Indians as merely acted upon by the white man's laws and institutions. In contrast, Williams looks at the numerous treaties Indians actively negotiated with whites and explores how they drew on their own unique traditions of diplomacy to resist and even influence the conduct of European law. Linking Arms Together recovers a deeper understanding of how Indians tried to forge a new society with whites on the multicultural frontiers of North America-an understanding that may enlighten our own task of protecting Native American rights and imagining racial justice.

                        Book Description

Throughout history, works of literature have helped to shape public discussion of social, legal, and political issues. In this book, Barry R. Schaller draws on examples from American literature in presenting an analysis of the legal aspects of several major problems facing our society. After identifying the key legal relationships in society, the book focuses on problems of violence, loss of authority, diminished faith in the American dream of progress, and the challenges posed by immense social and technological change. The author offers a set of standards to serve as a guide to effective judicial decision making and to assist the public in evaluating the soundness of those decisions.

                                  Book Description

This book presents an up-to-date overview of the characterization, risk assessment and remediation of mercury-contaminated sites. Many industrial activities, including the mining of gold, silver, and mercury itself, have caused mercury contamination of terrestrial and aquatic systems. Unlike other metals, which are generally not very volatile, mercury from contaminated sites can have a significant impact on remote ecosystems via the atmospheric pathway. Thus, mercury contamination is not only a local issue, but also has global dimensions. This book summarizes, for the first time, works from Europe, Russia and the American continent. Review chapters are supplemented by detailed, international case studies.

When Charlie Evans finishes his last and most humiliating music gig, he tosses his violin aside and takes up life in a skid row boarding house populated by drifters, a dominatrix, and an unforgettable huckster named Tinsel Greetz. As in his first work, Lord of the Barnyard, Tristan Egolf's novel Skirt and the Fiddle swiftly brings readers into a world that is near--but nothing like--the one we know. Charlie and Greetz strike up a contentious friendship and commit spontaneous pranks around Philth Town, a fallen city populated by cruel bodega owners, dark alleys, and shady bars. They start thinking bigger when they land an illegal but lucrative gig killing sewer rats. But then Charlie falls for Louise Gascoygne and his friendly chemistry with Greetz goes awry. What follows is the duo's most interesting caper of all. As an author, Egolf has been compared to John Kennedy Toole, but his work also summons references to Jonathan Lethem and George Saunders. Beneath its bravado, the novel ultimately forces Charlie to make a choice between his passions: the adrenaline-pumping good times he begrudgingly shares with Greetz or the more profound passions he can experience by making music and love. --Jane Hodges

                                    Book Description

Author of the internationally acclaimed Lord of the Barnyard, Tristan Egolf has established himself as one of the most audacious and inventive young writers in America. With Skirt and the Fiddle, Egolf has given us a novel that is equal parts headlong plunge into the joys and absurdity of infatuation and a love song to the maddening folly of friendship. Charlie Evans is a brilliant violinist who, embittered by a truly horrendous gig, has kissed the fiddle and the entire straight world good-bye. He lives in a flophouse among misfits like Armless Rob, Emmylou Mattressback, and Tinsel Greetz, an ersatz anarchist and 200-proof charlatan. Mutually antagonistic and joined at the shot glass, Tinsel and Charlie nevertheless make a great team, and when they get a highly illegal, extremely lucrative gig killing rats in the sewers, they are a deadly, unstoppable force. The morning after dissipating their hard-earned money, the boys wake up in a strange (five-star!) hotel room with the worst hangovers of their lives. And when Charlie meets the bewitching Louise, who's offered them shelter — well, then he's in trouble of a whole new sort.

This book is, above all else, very catching. I saw it while I was browsing at my local bookstore and started to read the first page. I had a great deal of trouble checking myself and remembering to buy the book instead of just reading the whole thing standing there. With moments of both insanity and downright strangeness, this book entertains from cover to cover.

4 out of 5 stars Stephen Hawking vs. Christopher Reeves.......2003-02-20

After the absolutely amazing 'Lord of the Barnyard', i went into this book hoping for the best and, admittedly, expecting the worst. What i got was much closer to the former than the latter, but still this book is as nothing compared to Egolf's first book. I would definitely recommend this if you're not looking for too much meaning in a book. it's one of the most fun reads i've had in a long time, and it only took me one night, so if you're strapped for time, you've got a winner. however, i can't write this review without stating that Tristan Egolf's first book is the finest piece of literature i've ever had the pleasure of reading.

This book was my introduction to Egolf who is an interesting writer. At times this was so hip, I really wasn't sure what was going on. Charlie is a half Cambodian, half black, alcoholic violin virtuoso whose gigs fall through and decides to live in a flop house. He works at a deli and moonlights bashing rats in the sewer on a pay per carcass basis. He buddies up with his friend sometimes called Tinsel, sometimes called Greetz, who does not believe in bathing or cleaning, calls himself an anarchist, and dreams of robbing a bank someday. After several spurts of bad behavior, the guys meet up with Louise Gascoyne, a wealthy jetset reporter who circles the globe looking for danger. She lures the guys out to an elegant restaurant, dresses them in Armani, gets Tinsel to take a bath, and then suffers from crabs which she extracts from the anarchist. The boys create havoc for a movie crew filming just outside of the upscale hotel as Charlie falls for Louise. Escaping through the lobby, Tinsel steals Louise's purse and camera. To get back at him, Charlie goes back and robs the deli, steals their truck, and sets up Tinsel to rob a bank as revenge. It's a fast-paced, improbable, but quite fun romp, filled with lunacy. We don't really get a sense of character which is sacrificed for the witty barrage of dialogue and the ambiance of the street. Eglof handles dialogue exceptionally well. Maybe the sequel will allow us to know the characters' motivating force. This one goes down quick and sweet. Enjoy!

2 out of 5 stars He must have wrote this over a long weekend........2002-09-20

I loved Lord of the Barnyard. This was not good, plain and simple. The chapters didn't connect with each other, therefore a coherent story was never formed. Another problem is that you never really care about the characters. The chapters are such "skits" that they never seem remotely real or compelling. Finally, there is zero follow-through in anything that occurs. Everything is what it is with no resonance or greater importance. I'm guessing his next book will be better.

4 out of 5 stars Still a breath of fresh air to modern Lit.......2002-09-09

Over all I believe this Novel was one step below Lord of the Barnyard, but the sole reason is the length of the book. If you liked Lord of the Barnyard then you will love this as well, you will also be let down with how short it is.
Fortunately for Egolf fans that is the only flaw I really see in this book, I partially expected a sophomore slump, especially with the long wait for this release. But no, it held all the wit and humor that Barnyard held.
With such mediocrity in lit now a days, I dearly hope egolf continues to write, and is right now hard at work for a third novel... I just hope it doesn't take 4 years for his next one.
