Written both for employees and entrepreneurs, The Seven Deadly Skills of Competing is much more than just another business book: it presents an entire philosophy of success, arguing that the secret of competitive excellence ultimately lies in your attitude towards your own goals and towards the people with whom you do business. It will encourage you to make the most of your potential and streamline you for success. The Seven Deadly Skills of Competing supports its argument with extensive real-life examples of world-beating businesses. The organizations whose activities are profiled include Dyson Appliances, The Bloomberg Corporation, The IDOM Group and Lush. Racy, highly entertaining, pithy and full of ideas, The Seven Deadly Skills of Competing will change the way you think about business.
Customer Reviews:
Great advice to re-energise you in the battle for success!.......2000-01-14
Seen 'Seven' , that film about the psycho whose murders follow the Seven Deadly Sins? This very readable and persuasive book does the same with what the authors describe as the Seven Deadly Skills of Competing. the only difference is that nobody gets murdered, although mediocrity certainly takes some hard knocks.
The authors regard these seven deadly skills of competing as the following - - know yourself - know your customer - outsmart your competition - make your staff your evangelists
- learn to enjoy solving customers' problems - when it comes to marketing - think first, and spend later - learn the tactics of competitive warfare
It's all in here, and very lucidly and cogently argued. There's plenty of reference to successful organisations from the world of business today, including Dyson Appliances, The Bloomberg Corporation and Pret a Manger - they of the delicious sandwiches.
A real pleasure of the book is the writing and the simple and clear logic of the arguments. I finished it feeling inspired and re-energised in the battle for success!

Very amusing and entertaining; makes a great gift.......2001-10-23
I thoroughly enjoyed reading this book of short stories. I bought 2 of these books as gifts for lawyers. It also makes a great gift for paralegals and legal secretaries.
funny and touching.......2000-04-02
Real-life anecdotes from a criminal defense lawyer. As a third-year law student, it made me alternately hopeful and cynical about the profession I'm about to enter. Some of the stories are downright laugh-out-loud funny, some show you the way justice can be done, some show you how justice is (sadly) often ignored. (The coin-flip story is particularly horrifying, although there's no doubt in my mind that it's absolutely true.) Everyone will be entertained by this book, as Matthews' style is more storyteller than legalese, but it will hit home with lawyers, and defense lawyers in particular.

Book Description
In many geological epochs, glacial sediments are widespread. This type of sedimentation results from the interaction between atmosphere, cryosphere, hydrosphere and biosphere under temperatures ranging from 0 to -80. Two types of glacial sediments exists: those from sea-ice and those from icebergs. Both types can be subdivided into various subfacies. Most widespread in the Northern Hemisphere is the Siberian subfacies, characterized by silt and clay and often misinterpreted as sediments of temperate zones. This reference book for researchers working on this kind of sediments provides a complete overview of the various glacial deposits in the ocean.

Description:
We model iceberg flow paths from the Eurasian Ice Sheet, and the associated meltwater production and sedimentation rates within the Norwegian-Greenland Sea during the last glaciation. Results from a numerical ice sheet model, an atmospheric general circulation model and an ocean general circulation model are collated and used to provide iceberg production rate, wind field and surface current forcings to an iceberg trajectory model. The iceberg model then determines how icebergs issuing from the Eurasian Ice Sheet travel across the ocean and eventually melt. In addition the release of iceberg sediments is also predicted. The results show that iceberg trajectories are complex and that common features of iceberg movement are clustering in zones of convergence and exit into the North Atlantic through the Iceland-Faeroes Channel. Eurasian icebergs do not penetrate into the interior of the Arctic Ocean. The gathering of icebergs produces a complex meltwater pattern that does not follow the conceptual idea of decreasing meltwater production with distance from the ice sheet margin. Sedimentation results are compared with the meltwater configuration and are found to be a poor indicator of past zones of iceberg melt, with zones of sedimentation extending significantly less far.

a CBI GI in the Greatest Generation.......2006-08-08
Lou, a young GI left his newly-wed wife Lottie for battle fields of India and China. He kept her connected and informed through his mailbag of sharp observation in words and talented artistic sketch so vivid that people described almost popped out from the pages. His letter never had a dull moment and was loaded with concise interesting background information so that his wife understood what he observed and felt culturally, politically and historically. He witnessed the reality from a far away modern country to war-torn nations without the arrogant and superior attitude. He saw the good, the bad and the ugly. Readers would easily comprehend the devastated China and the suffering of the innocent and helpless victims assaulted by the invading Japanese.
His smiling helpful attitude won him many friends. After the war, he promoted the friendship between American and Chinese people. Should he work for State Department, Asia history would have a different outcome. I had the fortune of sharing my love and respect to him by email in 2004. He related his 60th Wedding Anniversary honeymoon trip to China with wife Lottie to refresh his memory before he passed away last year.
I treasure his friendship and I feel we became bosom comrades by reading his book with cheering "Gan Bay" drinking party. Lou belongs to the Greatest Generation. My recommendation is that Lou's book should be classified as a must-read literature for the American idol generation to learn and carry on the mission of humanity, freedom and justice.
A must-have for any libray with an East Asia or WWII history collections as well as WWII buffs........2005-08-25
This book depicts life in China and India in such colorful and humorous ways. For a chinese-American who knows so little about China of the 1940s, it is a godsend. It helps me udnerstand the social, cultural, military, and economic aspects of life in China during that era. I feel very fortunate to have read and be in possession of this incredible book. It is without any doubt a collector's item for any WWII buffs.
Letters to Lottie.......2000-10-08
China Mailbag Uncensored-- a stunning book full of color, character, and the atmosphere of India, Burma, and China during World War 11. The story is told through the culture-shocked eyes of a young U.S. Army lieutenant as he writes illustrated letters to his bride at home. Punctuated with pictorial cartoons and picturesque art, this page-turning book takes the reader through experiences on a Jim Crow train as it races toward the Pacific to launch its soldiers on an adventure through submarine-infested waters to get to the China-India-Burma theater of war. The drama unfolds in the crowded streets of Calcutta, sweeps you across the Himalayan Mountains, and impresses upon you the scenes of war-torn China. Lou Glist, the artist-author, is there to join the Chinese in their fight against a Japanese foe who has conquered and occupied more than one-half of their country. Lou pictures starving soldiers, coolies carrying impossible loads, farmers working rice fields with oxen, Buddhist temples, hardships, disease, misfortunes, and life situations where there is no clean water, electricity, air conditioning, heating, and all the comforts of home. Imagine yourself in a strange land, living with people who have strange customs, a strange language, strange food, feeling the pain of anxiety, and laughing at yourself and your own reactions. If you do this, you will appreciate what this gifted , young soldier went through to give us a stream of human interest episodes on his odyssey of 18,000 miles. As you are drawn through this steady flow of observations, you will understand why these letters to Lottie are such an enduring treasure. You also will have a new appreciation for the sacrifice American soldiers, sailors, and marines made to give us global peace and prosperity today.
Wonderfully written, this book draws you in.......2000-07-24
China Mailbag: Uncensored, is a wonderful book. It drew me into the story because the book is made up of first person accounts of war, of the movements during WWII in China and India, and of the love an American GI had for his newlywed wife. The book is extremely interesting because it paints a detailed picture of what life was like for troops during WWII and contains a vast amount of entertaining anectodes, telling of funny meetings with chinese locals, and how difficult it was for soldiers to live the lives they were accustomed to in a foreign land. The book made me feel as though I too, had received letters from a GI abroad - the more of the book i read, the more i couldnt wait to turn to the next page. This is a book that any person, from young adults to fellow veterans of war would love to read. An entertaining, educational, overall lovely story is waiting for you! I encourage you to read it!

The Lincoln Myth.......2006-02-26
This book os simply another attempt to perpetuate the Lincoln Myth. He almost certainly did not write the Bixby Letter, John Hay, his secretary almost certainly did. Lincoln in fact wrote very little himself, leaving most of the work to his two secretaries, Nicolay and Hay. As for his writing all his own speeches, this too is untrue, certainly not after he became President. There is not a shadow of a doubt that his Secretary of State, William H. Seward had a hand in most of his speeches and in fact was virtually the power behind the throne throughout Lincoln's presidency. Lincoln was a nice enough man, though a manic depressive, as for a genius and great emancipator, GIVE ME A BREAK!!
Look out revisionists, Lincoln is back!.......2006-02-05
This is a very good and readable collections of the major writings and speeches of Abraham Lincoln. Unlike many collections of writings and speeches of that era, this is no dull melange of dated issues, but wisdom of the ages.
In one early piece, Lincoln waxes nostalgic by comparing the lethargy of his generation to the generation who fought in the Revolutionary war (talk about the "good old days" is nothing new). In an 1848 letter, he makes some stinging comments against the then-president's "lies" that got America into the Mexican War(sounds similar to modern complaints about you-know-who getting us involed in you-know-where).
Modern revisionists love to take scattered comments by Lincoln about Black people to show that Lincoln was a racist. Aspects of the Douglas debates and his mesage of colonization of 1862 do not deny this, but such people conveniently forget (or omit) Lincoln's evolution of thought as evidenced by the Second Inaugural Address (which also appears in its entirety at the Lincoln Memorial) and his statements about Black soldiers having the right to vote (in the 1860s, mind you). Some racist!
It is also important to remember that Lincoln wrote all of his own speeches and was largely self-educated! When you compare the quality of his speeches and writings to our soundbyte era, it is truly remarkable.
Read this book and become acquainted with greatness.
The great man in his own words .......2005-09-18
This collection of documents in a sense tells the life- story of Lincoln. It consists primarily of letters but also contains communications of other kinds, including his great speeches. Lincoln's immense power with language, the depth of his feeling and insight, his quiet humor and his great imaginative sympathy are all on display here. Also of course his political wisdom, his detailed knowledge of local and national political affairs, his struggle in conducting the great Civil War.
There are certain people it simply an honor and uplifting to be in the presence of . Lincoln is such a person, and so these words of his inform and most often, inspire.
A brilliant writer's showcase.......2000-10-04
The Portable Abraham Lincoln is just that, a small book packed with nothing but Lincoln's words and ideas, from the famous debates with Stephen Douglas to his immortal 2nd Inaguaral Address.
Mixed throughout the speeches are letters, both public and private, which reveal his inner thoughts and animating philosophy. Included is his short and moving letter to Mrs. Lydia Bixby, featured in the movie Saving Private Ryan, which is the most eloquent expression of patriotic grief I have ever read.
The book is organized in themes, from his emergence of a polictian to his writings as Chief Executive and as Commander-in-Chief, and ending up with Fate.
This book is for people who want to go beyond the soundbytes featured in documentaries; it places those famous phrases in the context of the entire speech and the commentary is kept to a minimum, showing respect for the reader.
