This quite possibly has to be the most deplorable book I have ever had the misfortune to read. How antiquated is this useless info. anyway? "Keep your head down so you don't look the boss eye to eye"? What??! "Don't take your shoes off in the office"?! The advice is either geared towards uncivilized savages who have never stepped foot in an office before, or workers interested in becoming unthinking machines who bow down to their master (err, boss) at every turn, without the capacity for individual thought or creativity. Is this George Orwell's vision of 1984? Read it for comedic purposes only, because it does not contain an ounce of humor, making its serious tone of draconian office "do's and dont's" unintentionally comical. Annoying, at best.

A (almost) complete reference.......2001-11-06

I bought the book as a practical reference in risk management/ applied financial engineering. I think the book accomplishes this goal.

It describes concepts and techniques in a clear, logical way and, most important, gives clearly outlined numerical examples, which help to implement the models. If all material would be written that way one didn't have to buy several introductory books and save a lot of money. This is especially true for professionals who want to implement things in a reasonable time without loosing time with (generally) confusing and incomplete derivations that have to be figured out afterwards through a painful process.

I must say though, that the work lacks to present some important concepts and techniques in interest rate risk management. As in many cases, fixed income applications were almost omitted. A treatment of PCA applications (hedging, simulation) would be very welcome and a more complete description with examples of interest rate models with implementations would complete this work.

Excellent reference for financial derivatives.......2000-03-28

I have read this book for the class of modeling financial derivatives and I was very impressed by the presentation of the theories of financial derivatives and risk management. The book covers derivative pricing in a very detailed form. THe best thing about this book is the presentation of the problems(mathematical) throughout the book, either through graphs, spreadsheet models, etc. It is not pure theory book, but it also contains many applications which encompas real finanical world. Such presentation enables the reader to easier comprehend the contents of the subject. Overall, the book is very very good for a beginner in finacial derivatives fiels, but it is also a great contribution to one more experienced in the field. Greatest emphasis was put on interest rate models, option models, volatility and risk management techniques.

Located in a region blessed by geology with nutrient rich, lush, black soil, DeKalb County, Illinois, is known for its agricultural prosperity. Here, in 1912, an enterprising group of successful farmers, businessmen, and bankers joined together to form an agricultural organization dedicated to improving crop production, the DeKalb County Soil Improvement Association. Aided by its capable farm advisor, William G. Eckhardt, this coalition evolved into the DeKalb County Farm Bureau—a new type of organization that soon proliferated throughout the United States, offering educational and farming services to rural communities.

Originating as a private soil improvement association, it grew to offer a wide variety of assistance to farmers, rural families, and the community. THIS IS A MAGNIFICENT BOOK BY A REMARKABLE MAN. WILLIAM PENNINGTON JOINED THE BRITISH ARMY AT 14, WENT TO INDIA, FOUGHT THE NAZI'S, THE JAPANESE AND CAME OF AGE AND WISDOM AS A RESULT. HE STARTED THIS BOOK AT 77 YEARS OF AGE AND I CAN ONLY DREAM OF BEING AS LUCID, WISE AND ENTERTAINING AT THAT AGE.

THE HISTORY IS RELEVANT TO TODAY AND IS ALSO SIGNIFICANT IN IT'S TRUTH. THE CBI WAS WITHOUT A DOUBT THE BLOODIEST AND MOST BARBARIC COMBAT IN WW II, WITH MAYBE THE EXCEPTION OF SOME OF THE MARINE ISLAND CAMPAIGNS. YET IT IS STILL NOT A THEATER OF WAR THAT GETS THE PRESS OR THE MOVIES. THE BOOK REMINDS ME IN STYLE OF GEORGE MACDONALD FRASIER'S "QUARTERED SAFE OUT HERE". PENNINGTON'S WORK AND "BURMA, THE LONGEST WAR" BY LOUIS ALLEN WILL GIVE YOU SOME GOOD INSIGHTS TO THE CHINA, BURMA INDIA THEATER. Made in the Middle Ages is a 45 year old work for teens and general audiences about Medieval craftsmen and their work. At a time when seeing the artifacts of this era meant going to a few widely-scattered and specialized museums, Christine Price used her artistic abilities and historic knowledge to create a wonderful illustrated introduction to this topic.

The book is divided into two sections: "Things Made for the Castle," and "Things Made for the Church." These are subdivided into sixteen chapers on Armor and Weapons, Cloth and Clothing, Jewels and Enamels, Sports and Pastimes, Tapestries, Tableware, Books for the Castle, Diptychs and Reliquaries, Books for the Church, Embroidery, Wood Carving, Paintings, Carvings in Alabaster, Carvings in Ivory, and Treasures of the Church. Each page is amply illustrated with pen and ink drawings of artifacts of the time that now reside in The Metropolitan Museum of Art, the Morgan Library, the British Museum, the Victoria and Albert Museum, the Bodelian Library, and other places. The end papers are outline maps of Europe that show the places mentioned in the book.

Well-organized and well-presented, this little book provides much detail about life and crafts in Europe between the years 1000 and 1500. Today photographs of many of these items are on the Internet, but Price's presentation gives them an order and logic unique to this work.

Absolutley loved it.Funny and well written. Can't wait to hear more from Josh Pryor. Could not put it down. One thing, my book club had to keep a dictionary close at hand.

Great sentences, so-so book.......2003-09-12

When I started reading this book I thought I had a real winner. Pryor's sentences are awesome--full of creative metaphor and unique use of language. The problem was that after while, all the great sentences, one after another, started to seem long and stilted. Don't get me wrong, there are some well-thought plot twists and pretty hilarious characters (a transsexual assassin working for Saddam Hussein!?), but unfortunately the writing style gets in the way of plot and character development. I found myself skimming the paragraphs trying to get the gist of the plot and move on. This is too bad, because some of those passages were probably worth reading. Too much of a good thing, maybe?

What a Wowza of a book!.......2006-05-30

"Penny" Pennington joined the British Army as a boy of 14 (as a trumpeter) during the depression, and never looked back. He not only saw India in the last days of the Raj (an era I knew absolutely nothing about), but he also fought the Japanese as a Forward Artillery Observer, ending up as a Captain and decorated for bravery during World War II.

This book is a frank, interesting and entertaining read from the very beginning to the very end. I highly recommend adding it to your library. I would suspect that this is what serving in the British Army was REALLY like.

I like reading autobiographical accounts of ordinary people who lived during extraordinary times. This one absolutely meets that criteria- well written, highly insightful and just downright fun at times.

I generally only review books I'm particularly impressed with, and this one certainly fits the bill.

Sylvan Learning Centers evaluated their reading at 1-4 years above grade level! Reading makes such a difference in future life! This particular set was one of my favorites too! We still play it on those "Dark and Stormy Nights".
