Book Description

Back in the hunting and gathering days, the answer to the question "Why do we have to work?" was straightforward: you hunted because you were hungry, skinned animals because you needed clothing, and built a shelter for protection. Today the answer is more complicated. "Work" nowadays involves carrying out highly specialized tasks that seem to have no direct link to providing for our survival--how and why did this happen?

Part I of "Why Do We Have to Work?" aims to make sense of this confusing situation, and traces the common link between the workday of the prehistoric hunter and gatherer, the first millennium BC farmer, the AD first century pottery-maker, the nineteenth century assembly-line worker, and today's videogame programmer. Included in this overview is an explanation of why we use this odd thing called "money": why the complications of bartering inevitably lead communities with multiple goods & services to use some type of "medium-of-exchange" (be it beads or dollar bills) to solve their trading problems.

Part II focuses on today's world, and questions one of the side repercussions of our modern workday: the assumption that our basis for happiness should come from the wealth, status, and identity we derive from our careers. It presents the alternative guideline that instead aims for a balance of our physical, emotional, mental, and spiritual dimensions.

5 out of 5 stars An excellent introduction on what it means to work........1999-06-02

Like a good parent, Mr.Gates is both firm and understanding in introducing the young reader to the realities of the workplace. From a history of labor, to the meaning of modern employment, the author provides fresh answers to old questions, without ever becoming pedantic.

5 out of 5 stars This book addresses a question on the minds of most students.......1999-05-24

The uniqueness of Todd Gate's book, "Why Do We Have To Work", lies in the fact that it addresses a question on the mind of every student: What can I do to bring meaning to my life? Students who may be bombarded with messages from family and and friends about the need to make as much money as possible, will enjoy Gate's presentation of another view- a need to strive for a balance in life. Todd Gate's book should attract a wide range of readers who are in need of thinking things through and coming to their own determination about Why We Have to Work.

4 out of 5 stars Premised on fine child development psychology.......1999-04-30

As a psychotherapist, I appreciate the psychologically sound principles Gates put in this primer for adolescents on the nature and necessity of"work." For example, Maslow's hierarchy of needs and Erikson's stages of identity formation are evident in his elegantly simple and logical communications to his sons about the fundamentals of money, career and balance in one's life. The cost and format are not ideal; it would be great to see this packaged as an affordable paperback for teenagers.

5 out of 5 stars A help for young parents for growing healthy kids........1999-04-25

While this is a practical treatise, there is an underlying current of organization that carries with it an attitude of profound respect for and committment to child development. In this book Gates presents a balance in living, advancing a value of self and sensitivity to the needs of his children, providing them with the necessary tools to be able to cope with the realities they are having and will have to face in order to thrive in the adult world. It is by no means an easy task to be satisfied with one's self as an adult. Gates gives some important hints about loving one's self, accepting reality, dealing with it, and making use of that achievement in accepting the responsibility for teaching his children how to get a jump-start on their own development. It looks like he intends to have his children thinking independently by their teens. So this book is helpful in its practical scope but beyond that has a coherent inner structure that contains its own subliminal guide.

5 out of 5 stars This book helped me make sense out of work and money.......1999-04-24

I liked Chapter 6 ("Measuring Success") the best. It helped remind me that what you happen to DO for a living is not necessarily what you ARE. And that while it MAY be time-efficient to combine your deepest interests with your paycheck, sometimes it's better to keep the two separate!

I liked a lot of the points brought up in Chapter 1 ("Hunting, Gathering, & Video Games"), like the origin of the double meaning of the word "trade" - how your job, or your `trade', is really just about what you use to `trade' with food, clothes, and shelter specialists. And I never thought about why we have to use money before, but after reading Chapter 2 ("Surgery & Dental Floss"), it suddenly made so much sense. Could a surgeon and floss-maker reliably make much use out of each other's specialties if they had to rely on straight barter?

    Book Description

Over the past ten years, economic volatility has come into its own after being treated for decades as a secondary phenomenon in business cycle literature. This evolution has been driven by the recognition of the permanent negative effects of volatility on long-run growth and inequality, especially in poor countries. After presenting basic features of volatility, this volume investigates commodity price volatility as an absorber and amplifier of shocks. The collection then examines macroeconomic crises, which are driven by the same phenomena that make volatility difficult to treat effectively.

      Book Description

This volume examines whether multinational corporations have obligations under international law and, if so, how they may be held accountable if they act in breach of these obligations. It concludes that multinational corporations indeed have such duties, particularly in the fields of human rights and the environment, and that they may be held accountable in both domestic courts and intergovernmental organisations.

The book first takes stock of the standard setting and supervisory activities regarding multinational corporations undertaken within international fora, such as UNCTAD, the UN Sub-Commission on Prevention of Discrimination and Protection of Minorities, the Conference establishing the International Criminal Court, and the OECD. It then continues to analyse the lawsuits alleging violations of international standards by multinational corporations that have been brought so far in the United States and the United Kingdom. It finishes by assessing the prospects for similar lawsuits in other countries, such as The Netherlands.

Contributions are by leading experts in this new field of international law, including attorneys acting on behalf of plaintiffs in Doe v. Unocal, Wiwa v. Royal Dutch Shell, and the cases against Cape plc, as well as experts involved in the creation of the sessional Working Group on Transnational Corporations of the UN Sub-Commission on Prevention of Discrimination and Protection of Minorities, the drafting of the Statute of the International Criminal Court and the revision of the OECD Guidelines for Multinational Enterprises. The book features the text of relevant international instruments, tables of statutes and cases, an extensive bibliography, and a subject index.

          Book Description

This book deals with two important aspects of the place of corporate bodies in international law. The author examines, first, in relation to both private and State-owned corporations, the problems of diplomatic protection, nationalization and State responsibility. Second, he discusses some problems of those corporate entities which owe their existence to international law, whether international organizations proper or common inter-State enterprises. These questions are all ones of continuing practical interest.

              Book Description

The Hong Kong securities market ranks sixth in the world in terms of capitalisation. Public Companies and Their Equity Securities presents a comprehensive, critical examination of the laws and norms regulating existing companies, their equity securities, and other participants in this significant international market. The author highlights the difficulties in making Anglo-Saxon corporate and securities laws fit fundamentally different markets via four major themes: (1) To ensure investor protection, corporate law and securities regulations must be formatted as one integral law. (2) Rules of corporate governance prevailing in Anglo-Saxon jurisdictions must be adapted in Hong Kong's different corporate structures. (3) Problems of enforcement must receive particular attention given the difficulties inherent in a self regulatory regime and the absence of a contingency fee system. (4) The problems posed by internationalisation require specific solutions. The author's probing, critical examination makes this an important work and one of significant comparative interest for corporate and securities lawyers and for academics and others interested in the workings of a major securities market.

                            Book Description

This original contribution to Indian history, focusing on contemporary and largely indigenous documents, introduces a new set of concepts for the analysis of late Mughal rule. More specifically it examines the origins and development of the Maratha svardjya or ‘self rule’ within the context of declining Muslim power. It traces the expansion of Maratha dominion to a process of fitna, a policy of ‘shifting alliances’ which was recurrent in the wake of Muslim expansion throughout its history. The book gives an interesting perspective on Hindu-Muslim relationships in the pre-British period as well as on the nature of the Indo-Muslim state and its most important successor polity, on its capacity for change and development in the intermediate sections of society, the land-tenurial system, the monetisation of the economy, and on the fiscal system.

5 out of 5 stars Outstanding Radar Remote Sensing Book.......2000-02-18

A comprehensive story of radar remote sening written by the guruhs of synthetic aperture radar. Very application oriented and not such crypitc collection of mathematical/physical hard core stuff. Well done! A bit on the expensive side due to its dimensions and colorfulness! This book is what I was waiting for!

                                  Book Description

As important to modern world views as any work of Darwin, Marx, or Freud, Lyell's Principles of Geology has never before been available in paperback. In the second of three volumes, Lyell (1797-1875) continues his uniformitarian argument of Volume I—the physical features of the earth are endlessly fluctuating around a stable mean—but focuses on organic rather than inorganic processes. Volume II is widely known because of its influence on Darwin, who took the book on his famous Beagle voyage and was stimulated by Lyell's extensive treatment of biological history and diversity.

I have to be honest with you guys: I have not read this book yet (although I will soon). However, if we keep in mind that this book was written by one of the most famous British geologists of the XIX century, we will certainly find it great. It is good to mention that this was the book that Charles Darwin took with him in his famous trip around the world aboard the Beagle, around 170 years ago. After having read it, Darwin witnessed the effects of an Earthquake in South America, and confirmed the teachings of Lyell. Lyell and Darwin actually met and shared their findings on the Earth's physics. I think that rather than considering this book as a novelty in the Earth Sciences, what is most valuable are the original descriptions of the dynamic forces shaping our planet, seen from the point of view of one of the pillars of the Geology as a Science. If you like Earth Sciences, don't miss the chance of reading this jewel of the history of Geology.

The subjects covered are as follows: the physical properties of the reservoir rocks and the fluids they contain; the estimation of oil and gas reserves; the interpretation of well tests; the evaluation of producibility and of the distribution of reservoir fluids; the global behaviour of a reservoir and aquifer in contact. Each topic is dealt with in a concise and rigorous manner, and the underlying mathematics is presented in an easily comprehensible fashion. Because it does not require prior knowledge of reservoir engineering, this book is ideal for use by students of the subject. However, it will also prove invaluable for field and office use by professional engineers, covering both the fundamentals and the latest developments in their sphere of operations.

                                              Book Description

Many students of physical and applied science and of engineering find difficulty in copying with the mathematics necessary for the quantitative manipulation of the physical concepts they are atudying in their main course. This book is designed to help first and second year under-graduates at universities and polytechnics, as well as technical college students, to find their feet in the important mathematical methods they will need. Throughout the text the physical relevance of the mathematics is constantly stressed and, where it is helpful, use has been made of pictorial mathematics and qualitative verbal descriptions instead of over-compact mathematical symbolism. Topics are presented in three stages: a qualitative introduction, a more formal presentation and an explicit check or worked example. There are many exercises included in the text which are aimed at testing a student's understanding and building his confidence progressively throughout each piece of work.
