      Book Description

This pathbreaking book shows how credit markets functioned in Paris, through the agency of notaries, during a critical period of French history. Its authors challenge the usual assumption that organized financial markets—and hence the opportunity for economic growth—did not emerge outside of England and the Netherlands until the nineteenth century. Drawing on innovative research, the authors show that as early as the Old Regime, financial intermediaries in France were mobilizing a great tide of capital and arranging thousands of loans between borrowers and lenders.

The implications for historians and economists are substantial. The role of notaries operating in Paris that Priceless Markets uncovers has never before been recognized. In the wake of this pathbreaking new study, historians will also have to rethink the origins of the French Revolution. As the authors show, the crisis of 1787-88 did not simply ignite revolt; it was intimately bound up in an economic struggle that reached far back into the eighteenth century, and continued well into the 1800s.

        Book Description

Comparative Income Tax Deferral examines the benefits achieved by deferring income or accelerating deductions, with reference to the income tax systems of the United States and Japan. The United States has been at the forefront of recognising the time value of money benefit of tax deferral and of devising methods to prevent tax deferral. Japan, on the other hand, is only gradually placing greater emphasis on tax deferral issues, in light of the activities of foreign companies, and the constant introduction of new financial products which take advantage of the tax deferral allowed under Japanese income tax rules. The book starts with a detailed discussion of the 1948 Cary Brown model and its various interpretations, an understanding of which is key to any analysis of tax deferral issues. The author goes on to provide a comparative analysis of the different tax deferral patterns that can arise under the United States and Japanese income tax systems, and of methods introduced by the United States to eliminate the tax deferral benefit. A history and overview of the Japanese income tax system is included in the appendix. Principles of tax deferral and time value of money are crucial in an era of globalisation in commerce and finance. They cut across all areas of taxation and are particularly important in the context of taxation of derivatives and other financial instruments. Comparative Income Tax Deferral is an important addition to the literature in this field and will be of great interest to tax and business law practitioners, investment bankers and financial planners.

            Book Description

Methodologies used to analyse the genomes of prokaryotes and eukaryotes are advancing very rapidly as it has been realized that there is a resolution gap between what can be viewed under the microscope and what molecular techniques can resolve. This book presents current, successful
strategies for construction of physical maps to identify and analyse the arrangement and function of genes. These techniques, which are applicable to a range of organisms, are being used to move from linked markers to candidate genes in several human monogenic disorders. They are presented in a
way that should enable any research or diagnostic laboratory to apply them to their particular systems. Also included are descriptions of new probes and approaches for the localization of human disorders whose analysis has so far eluded the molecular geneticist.

Although it is generally understood that the Antarctic Ice Sheet plays a critical role in the changing global system, to date there is a general lack of readily available information on the subject. The Atlas of Antarctica is the first atlas on the seventh continent to be published in 20 years. It contains 145 accurate topographic and elevation maps derived from satellite data (GEOSAT and ERS-1 radar altimeter data), which are the best of their kind available today. Each map is accompanied by a description of geographic and glaciological features.

The introductory chapters familiarise the reader with the world of the Antarctic Ice Sheet and its role in the global system, as well as discussing satellite remote sensing and geo-statistical methods at textbook level. Applications include detailed regional studies of 15 outlet glaciers of the inland ice, some of which are currently changing rapidly. Combinations with SAR data facilitate the study of surface structures and flow features.

Despite its state-of-the-art scientific accuracy, the Atlas of Antarctica is not only intended for use by researchers and students in glaciology, geophysics, remote sensing, cartography and Antarctic research, but also informative and enjoyable for any reader interested in the seventh continent. The Atlas is accompanied by a CD-ROM containing all the atlas maps and elevation models – enabling the reader to discover a wealth of fascinating details in Antarctica!

                  Book Description

This book, suitable for use in a one-semester introduction to electrodynamics for advanced undergraduates, emphasizes relativity and symmetry in developing the theory. By focusing immediately on the Lorentz invariance of Maxwell's equations, the presentation makes many advanced topics readily accessible to the student. After a brief review of the history of electrodynamics, the book presents the experimental basis for the four Maxwell equations, both in vacuo and in dielectric and magnetic media. The principle of relativity is then used to unify the equations into a pair of covariant field equations, and steady-state solutions of these are treated both analytically and numerically. The final chapters discuss radiation in a vacuum and in dielectric media; the motion of charged particles in electromagnetic fields; radiation by moving changes; and, briefly, extensions to quantum theory. Mathematica scripts on the included diskette provide graphic solutions to many of the examples discussed in the text.

3 out of 5 stars Look elsewhere for EM theory.......2007-08-14

First, this book was poorly edited. Lots of errata. They are mostly notational typos, but some of the physics is misleading as well. Many annoyances, e.g author uses m's and n's for indices back to back and type-set makes it hard to distinguish them. The book is bog downed with needless notation that isn't useful in most cases. The book tries to be fancy and loses clarity instead. For those looking for CONCISE AND CLEAR, go with LEV LANDAU's courses. For tensors, see Bishop or Lovelock.

N.B. Diskette is useless on a modern CPU, and all the text pages the code takes up are wasted becuase of this.

the 3 stars are for chptrs 6-8 ONLY. The rest is sub-standard.

5 out of 5 stars Broad, concise and lucid........1999-11-06

Westgards book it possibly the best electrodynamics text I've come across, for those who want an upper level text. The lucid and yet incredibly concise description of tensors alone makes the book worthwhile. And since most of the book then goes on to use tensor notation, one is not left with a lot of the ugly mathematical muck you find in most electro books.

                  Book Description

This book aims to help the business strategist and policy-maker understand how compatiblity standards may be used to ensure business success. It provides a framework for standards strategy and policy, together with a series of case-studies which interpret the economics of standards in practical settings. The book considers the problems of establishing a new standard in the market and winning standards contests. It also studies questions of how to maintaing the profitability of a standard and how to compete within an established standard. It combines the strategic analysis with an evaluation of standards policy, and suggests ways in which markets and policy intervention may effectively be used together. Cases include contests for standards for video cassette recorders, digital audio tape, personal computers, open computer systems, high-definition television, and Telepoint cordless phones. Standards have long been seen as a technical problem, yet in a large number of industries they are central to business strategy and technical aspects are only part of the effort needed for product success. They imply very different strategies and policies than for conventional products.

5 out of 5 stars A book combined with standard_strategy theories and cases.......1996-12-06

There're two parts in this book. One is about strategies of standard, the other is real cases. The strategies of standard can be roughly divided into "de facto" and "de jure" The cases shows every pattern of standard_setting_way... Mmmm...I think the cases in this book are most attractive !! I love it!

                      Book Description

Drawing upon vast amounts of fresh research, David CarpenterÂ's remarkable new book brings to life medieval Britain in the tumultuous period between the Norman conquest of England and the English conquest of Wales under Edward I. This epoch saw a profound reshaping of Britain, as Norman and Anglo-Saxon peoples were molded together into a new identity, and the development of a powerful parliamentary tax-based state enabled England to dominate the rest of Britain at the end of the thirteenth century. Yet as CarpenterÂ's wide-ranging narrative makes clear, during this time England was also linked in an entirely new way to continental Europe, leaving plenty of space for the ambitions of BritainÂ's other rulers, namely the princes of Wales and the king of Scots, to emerge.

Carpenter's survey of post-Conquest Britain somehow manages to be both very detailed and very broad. As expected, he focuses mainly on the political and religious aspects of the period, but he is careful to include social history (including discussions of slavery, the peasantry, queenship and chivalry)where it impinges on those subjects. The result is magnificently clear narrative of this complicated and turbulent era. Four chapters of purely social history round out the story: two at the beginning discuss the peoples and economy of Britain, and two near the end summarize "The Structures of Society" and the "Church, Religion, Literacy, and Learning." Within the main body of the text he provides short overviews of Welsh and Scots power structures and history. These are especially welcome additions, and though he generally includes only the details that help make sense of Anglo-Norman actions, he writes these sections from a Welsh or Scottish perspective.

Surprisingly, the most gripping parts of the book concern subjects that might be thought dry. Carpenter excels at dealing with abstractions. His description of the legal system, which changed several times throughout the period and eventually gave rise to both common law and the Magna Carta, is actually thrilling. His discussions of the economy, feudal rights and obligations, and the importance of the castle to medieval politics are fascinating. Of course, all this comes at a price: he doesn't have room for much in the way of anecdote, and a few subjects that ought to make for exciting reading (the civil war between Stephen and Empress Matilda, the reign of Henry II)are a little flat. Sometimes, maddeningly, he refers to good stories (Matilda's daring escapes, "notorious" clerical crimes, the romantic intrigues of Nest, a Helen of Wales) and then refrains from telling them. Other chapters in history fare better; his coverage of William I, William Rufus, and Henry I was especially lively and satisfying. The small sacrifices he makes to narrative cleanliness don't detract from the work's readability; it's compelling throughout--it's just what's compelling that gets you.

There are a few more serious omissions, or rather near-omissions. The crusades get little attention, and I would have liked to hear more about the major female players. Still, he covers everything at least briefly--in itself a staggering achievement. In short, this is a thorough introduction to the period, an engrossing read, and a fine update on contemporary medieval scholarship. Indispensable.

                      Book Description

The years from 1066-the Norman conquest of England-to 1284-the English conquest of Wales--were momentous ones in the history of Britain. In this comprehensive synthesis canvassing the peoples, economies, religion, languages, and political leadership of medieval Britain, David Carpenter weaves together the histories of England, Scotland, and Wales. Arguing that English domination of the kingdom was by no means a foregone conclusion, Carpenter analyzes the multiple struggles for mastery of Great Britain. He explains why English monarchs focused on continental landholdings more than the island of Great Britain and narrates the loss of Normandy, Anjou, and Acquitaine. He recounts how the Welsh kings strove to recover areas lost to the Normans and to assert dominion over one another, and how the kings of Scotland expanded their realm to create a united Scotland. Based on readings of primary and secondary sources, Carpenter sheds light on major highlights of the period including the Battle of Hastings, the murder of Becket, and the signing of the Magna Carta, as well as intermarriage, the feudal system, and the characters of key figures. This new interpretation is a definitive introduction to the period for general readers.

5 out of 5 stars Almost everything you'd want to know and then some.......2006-01-26

This book is an outstanding work of history, going for the most part into incredible depth on this critical period of British history, from the initial Norman conquest of England in 1066 to the final English conquest of Wales in 1284 (and also to the first English conquest of Scotland a few years later). Most importantly, it shows how this period formed the foundations of what would become Britain, covering everything from how the Norman overlords and their English subjects eventually assimilated each other to become one people, how the Scots were successful in forming a viable kingdom out of many disparate groups while the Welsh, who had seemingly greater advantages, ultimately failed due to their endless internecine feuds. The kings of the period, Norman and Angevin, come into sharp relief, their personal strengths and weaknesses shown often to be the biggest factor in the successes or failures of their reigns. The book also covers in great detail how Magna Carta came to be the foundation for the rule of law, how the institution of parliament evolved, how the concept of common law evolved and the unifying effect that this had on the nation, and how none of these things occurred without a great deal of struggle - military, political and social - between the various parties involved. It really is impossible to convey the depth of detail the book goes into on everything from how laws were enforced (at one point traveling courts called 'eyres' would hear cases in a given shire about once every two years), how creative taxation could be (widows were sometimes required to pay a fee for the right to choose if and whom they wished to remarry) and how the document-driven bureaucracy evolved (King Henry II employed four clerks in his chancery. His great-grandson Edward I employed over two hundred). About the only areas where I felt the author could have gone into more detail was in the eventual conquests of Wales and Scotland at the end of the period. But otherwise, I found this book extremely informative on many levels. It's a somewhat dense read due to the amount of detail, but you come away with a very firm understanding of what happened in the period and why it was all so critical to Britain's evolution.

Excellent and highly recommended: the best I've read in the recent Penguin history of Britain (v. 4 is poor, v. 5 is very good). Carpenter offers a very intelligent, comprehensive, balanced, and authoritative account of the social, economic, political, and religious aspects of a very rich period that witnessed the early formation of institutions that have lasted to the present. Best of all, Carpenter has written a masterful narrative in a clear, perspicuous, and fluid style that seamlessly weaves many complex themes in an orderly pattern, mixing illuminating detail with judicious observation. This volume is also much longer than the others I've seen in the series, and all the better for that. The index's organization is a bit peculiar (see all entries for "England"), but once you get used to it you'll find it accurate and reliable. (With all due respect to the previous reviewer, with whom I otherwise completely agree, I think the educated lay reader new to the period will do fine with this book. It's true, on occasion my eyes glazed at the detail on battles or finances, but one can easily skip a paragraph or two, or even several pages, without losing the thread, such is author's organizational skill.)

5 out of 5 stars Outstanding Guide to Period.......2004-05-16

As a closet British/Norman amateur medieval scholar, the Norman and Angevin rulers are endlessly fascinating to me. This is one of the best books I've ever read on the subject. It places virtually every individual and significant event into context, some of which even biographies devoted to a particular individual haven't discussed. It blends the events, personalities, economics, religious aspects and power struggles into a comprehensive, highly readable narrative. My only caution -- the author assumes the reader has a general knowledge of the time period from the Norman Conquest of England through the Angevin dynasty.
Even though I have over 75 text books and biographies on the period, this is already one of my favorites I know I'll turn to time and again.

If medals were awarded to animals for living a long time, then a giant tortoise would certainly win one. Some giant tortoises have lived for more than 150 years! Still, there are things on this planet much older than giant tortoises. Some of the giant sequoia trees that grow in California could be more than 3, 000 years old. But the trees aren't that old compared to the Barringer Crater in Arizona--that was made about 49,000 years ago. And it's almost impossible to imagine that 65 million years ago, the T. rex dinosaur roamed this planet--but we have the skeletons to prove it!

5 out of 5 stars A must read for all interested in the Environmental Movement.......2001-03-02

Not in Our Backyard, is an excellent book that highlights many of the lesser-known characters and events that comprise the U.S. Environmental Movement. Tim Redmond and Marc Mowrey have crafted a culmination of intriguing and exciting stories that detail the formulation of what would ultimately become a force to be reckoned with: The Environmental Movement.

In a time when we are losing our giants of the movement including David Brower, Marc Reisner and countless others, Not in Our Backyard brings forth insight and intelligence, ultimately proving that individual citizens can make profound contributions to worthwhile causes. As a student of environmental history and someone who has read numerous books on the subject, I can say with certainty that this is my favorite book by far on the subject.

Written in a journalistic style, the book consists of numerous short chapters that focus on a diverse cast of people, places, and events that changed the course and helped define the environmental movement. Although over 400 pages long, the book reads extremely fast and is difficult to put down. I highly recommend that anyone interested in Environmental History seek out this out-of-print book and read it, you won't regret it.
