After just the first few pages, I was pleasantly surprised. Liked the famous twenty mule team on the cover and inside.

William I. Brustein provides a systematic comparative and empirical examination of anti-Semitism in Europe before the Holocaust. Brustein studies the evolution of the four principal roots of anti-Semitism--religious, racial, economic, and political--and demonstrates how these roots became ignited in the decades before the Holocaust. The book explains the epidemic rise of modern anti-Semitism, societal differences in anti-Semitism, and how anti-Semitism varies from other forms of prejudice. The book draws upon an extensive body of data from Europe's leading newspapers and the American Jewish Year Book.

Scholarly...but is something missing?.......2005-06-15

The methodolgy adopted by the study involved sampling newspapers in five European countries for anti-Semitism in the forty years before WWII. Four roots of anti-Semitism are identified for analysis: racial, religious, economic and political. Contra Goldhagen, Brustein concludes that anti-Semitism was not an axiom of 19th century German nationalism. His other arguments are directed towards the impact of Jewish immigration from the East into Europe (pogroms and the Russian revolution) and the perceived involvement of Jews in the rise of leftwing politics. Race and religious practice served to further create a uniqueness for the group and a social opacity. There are a large number of challenging theses and arguments in this book. Facile certainties about anti-Semitism are explored in detail and some of the conclusions are controversial, e.g. about the relatively benign nature of Europe towards the Judaism in the 19th century. However, this is an exceptionally intelligent book in that it analyses anti-Semitism against a background of general European upheaval in the late 19th century and post WWI. The book argues that unlike other migrant minorities in search of labour, Jews were both disliked and feared (due to economic prejudices). The methodology of newspaper sampling over such a long period of time is debatable. The conclusion reached is that by and large the newspapers (the 'broadsheets') were neutral towards Jews. There is something missing here and that is a explanation of the potency of anti-Semitism in the political arena. Some element9s) of popular culture have not been caught in the trawl.

In Germany the 'fork' in media coverage came with the rise of the Nazis in 1933. What the book does not explain however, at least to my satisfaction, is how the step from mutterings about anti-Semitism to the Holocaust was accomplished. In other words, the various layers of social fabric and the vernacular ideology of the 'street' that enabled the rolling out of the extermination program are not satisfactorily explained. Whether the flaw lies in the data sampling, the methodology in general or at the level of testing the wrong hypotehses is beyond the remit of this review. Nevertheless, this is a book worth reading in its entirety. It is never strident or reliant upon a tacit acceptance of pre-existing anti-Semitism to force its claims. I must admit in conclusion that it while it clarifies several of the ideological and structural properties of anti-Semitism, it did not provide me with a 'logic of anti-Semitism' sufficient to explain the Holocaust.

Tremendously informative.......2002-04-11

This book concisely explained the probable causes of anti-Semitism. Lindemann was careful to acknowledge that by attempting to understand anti-Semitism, one can misinterpret this to mean accept it in some way. Anti-Semitism is never an acceptable expression but by understanding why it has occurred perhaps steps can be taken to prevent its future occurrence.

If you don't have a lot of time but want to better understand this troubling issue, I can't imagine a better book to read.

Good little book, but get the full-size original this fall........2000-06-22

I liked this book tremendously, but often found myself comparing it to Lindemann's previous masterwork Esau's Tears (1997), on which this is based. The original hardback is 600 pages of pure erudition; this new one is only a fifth of that. Reading Esau's Tears was such an eye-opener that I ordered ASBH as soon as I heard about it, even knowing much would be somewhat redundant.

Lindemann's writing comes out equally engrossing. Of his new material, I most enjoyed Lindemann's intelligent discourse on the despotic Hebrew god, in chapter one. Peering into the "mind" of this famously jealous-vindictive Deity is surely an appropriate starting-point for exploring His human devotees. I am surprised that none of the many books I've seen on antisemitism begins here.

Lindemann is at his best in surveying antisemitic writers and politicians of La Belle Epoch. The rise of a uniquely German antisemitism came about in this period, due largely to influential writings by Wilhelm Marr, Heinrich von Treitschke, Adolph Stoecker, Houston Steward Chamberlain, Otto Boeckel, Richard Wagner and Austria's Karl Lueger. Lindemann manages to introduce us to all of them, together with a few of their English-language counterparts. He notes that "The assertion that an anti-Semitic `German ideology' was embedding itself ever deeper in the psyches of Germany's intellectual classes has much engaging evidence to support it."

News flash: Esau's Tears in full-length original will be re-issued in fall of 2000.

The book is easy to read, easy to understand, and has challenging exercises in Linguistics. It is well written, and if you get a chance I highly recommend taking a course in Linguistics with Justice. He is a helpful, easy to talk to instructor.

Perfect for high school teachers.......2005-07-15

Faced with the challenge of teaching a ninth grade linguistics course, I looked long and hard for books that could help me. Almost all linguistic texts are hundreds of pages long and pitched at way too complex a level. In this one, though, Paul Justice tells you exactly what you need to know, distilling but not oversimplifying the subject. The book is designed so that you can effectively teach yourself, with exercises and good examples throughout. Justice is a clear writer and explicator, revisiting important topics when appropriate, so that you see connections, and he always remembers to explain why what he's teaching you is relevant in a high school classroom. And like the best linguistics books, it's fun. My only complaint is that the on-line solutions to the exercises are only available to teachers who adopt the text for their classes. All in all, though, this book is a definite find.

Great textbook for Linguistics students.......2003-11-28

This textbook is a great source for both undergrad and grad students. No other books explain phonology, morphology, and syntax better than this one. All the chapters are carefully designed to help learners understand better. I strongly recommend this book to any students who are interested in Linguistics.
