Kimberley Lindsay Wilson's book, Work It! The Black Woman's Guide to Success at Work, is a must read for every female high school and college seniors and should be in every library in the country. This small book gets right down to the basics. Your first "real" job can be an eye opener and many women learn the hard way that businesses don't run as smoothly as they do on TV.

Although this book is geared toward African-American women, it is truly a guide for women of all races. Wilson's book provides a set of guidelines that all women need to be aware of and follow almost as closely as they do their Bible.

Wilson offers hard-nosed facts on what the business world is really like. Her chapters include "Getting In," "Getting Over," "Getting Along," and "Getting Out." The chapters are succinct, to the point, and brutally honest.

I am a middle-aged white woman with 20 years of corporate experience and the lessons and tips that Wilson provides are a grand slam.

Work It! The Black Woman's Guide to Success at Work also provides a wonderful final chapter on "Career Resources" that lists more than 15 Internet research sites for career opportunities and research, which can provide even the most experienced woman with new information. This would make a great gift for that newbie on the job or entering the job market!

Life changing!!!.......2007-10-10

I read through this book rather quickly, but then I went back and did the real work, which is a life assessment and a guide to making your dreams work for you. No one ever asked me what I was willing to sacrifice to make my dreams happen, but this book did. No one had ever given me a step by step process from taking my dreams from the potential phase to the making it happen phase, but this book did. If you are in need of directon or just want in on some of the secrets of successful people this is the book for you. I am now ready to start writing my first novel, 2 children under the age of 5 years old and a husband are my assets now, not impediments from my goal. I now have a plan to make it work and my only job is to work the plan. Thank you ladies and I will Work It.

In this accessible book, a leading expert provides a critical assessment of the official sector's efforts to more effectively manage financial crises in emerging markets. Professor Eichengreen reviews international initiatives on both the crisis prevention and crisis resolution fronts. While crises will always be with us, he concludes that good progress has been made in limiting their spread and strengthening the international financial system. Ironically, however, official-sector initiatives in this area may in fact have made life more difficult for the poorest countries. Initiatives to limit the incidence of crises and threats to the stability of the international financial system should therefore be linked to an increase in development assistance designed to offset the extra burdens on the poorest countries. The other place where official efforts have fallen short is in creating new ways of resolving crises. The author argues that the old way-official sector financing through the International Monetary Fund-is part of the problem, not part of the solution. The Fund's financial operations allow investors to escape without significant losses, which in turn encourages them to lend without regard to the risks, weakening market discipline. Moreover, bailouts are inequitable. Because investors are allowed to exit and the IMF ultimately gets paid back, the residents of the crisis country end up footing the bill. This is one reason why IMF programs have come to be regarded with such animus in the developing world. Imagining that the solution is for the official community to simply show the resolve to resist bailouts is too easy. That the International Monetary Fund has repeatedly come under pressure to extend financial assistance reflects more than a lack of political will; it reflects the inadequacy of the alternatives. At the same time, seeking to create radical new alternatives like an international bankruptcy court is too hard. It would do more to increase the efficiency of resource allocation and the stability of financial markets, the author concludes, to concentrate on more modest changes, namely the introduction of restructuring-friendly provisions into loan agreements, enhancing the capacity of creditors and debtors to resolve debt problems on their own.

Barry Eichengreen, one of the world's foremost economists, presents an illuminating, footnote-rich, reflection on the nature of financial crises and the need for systemic reform. Heretofore, official responses to financial crises have often made the problem of systemic vulnerability even worse. International Monetary Fund (IMF) bailouts of developing countries in crisis increase moral hazard by taking the pain of the consequences away from lenders and investors. The IMF effectively allows such investors to reap upside gains from risky ventures while they place responsibility for losses on the IMF itself. Market discipline needs to be the first line of defense against policies and practices that lead countries into crisis. But many political, institutional and financial players resist needed reforms. We congratulate Eichengreen for doing an excellent job of exploring what is necessary and distinguishing it from what is possible.

Buchholz is truly an economic prophet, and he brings wit to the table as well. I thought this book, in addition to his previous masterpieces, was a wonderful, informative, helpful, entertaining read. Well done, Buchholz!

Entertaining Light Reading.......2000-06-26

The terms "Upheavals" and "Market Shock" should not be used to describe the subject matter in this book since it consists entirely of slow, gradual changes in demographics. These changes are only discussed in the most general of terms. There is not one chart or graph in this book. The lack of a timeline makes it impossible to do any serious financial planning. Most of these changes will not have a major effect on the U.S. economy until after most of us are dead and buried.

Unfortunately, the financial advice in this book is very limited, consisting mainly of common sense items, such as, "Learn to broil a trout." The useful information in each chapter can be summed up in one sentence: Chapter 1: Americans are aging. They will need health care and retirement homes. Chapter 2: Science is cool, but make sure that a lot of people will pay for it before investing. Chapter 3: Mutual fund fees are too high. (Also contains the crazy theory that all funds will collapse when people figure out they are not FDIC insured.) Chapter 4: One day, white people will be the minority in America. Chapter 5: The Japanese are getting older, too. Chapter 6: Europe needs Euro-denominated junk bonds. Chapter 7:China has a tough row to hoe. Chapter 8: The crime rate will rise. Chapter 9: There's that global warming thing.

I would recommend this book to anyone who enjoys historical trivia. On the one hand, I read every page in this book. On the other hand, I don't expect to ever make a dime off of anything that I learned.

We all see the changes that are taking place around us (such as the graying of America). This book takes those changes and puts them into perspective with actionable information. I kept slapping my forehead and saying, "I know this, why didn't I see where it leads?" Buchholz makes sense out of our everyday observations and puts them into economic context.

A rare book on the economy that is actually interesting and fun to read. Buchholz has taken a very clever approach to making his point (with mini-novellas) that are both insightful and well researched. And humourous. Raises some serious concerns about the not too distant future that we should all be looking at as we contemplate our next investment.
