Great Color Photographs!.......2000-07-10

This book is illustrated with LOTS of beautiful photographs of two spotted rabbits named Freckles and Dotty. It begins with their mother building a nest, and soon we see the first picture of the two rabbits as new-borns. As the babies grow, the illustrations follow, and we see them at eight days, thirteen days, three weeks (getting very cute), five and six weeks, and three thru seven months, when the bunnies have grow to adults and Freckles has her first litter of baby rabbits. The text is simple, and gives lots of information on rabbits, while telling the story of these rabbits in particular. This is a very enjoyable book.

This is a one of a kind book! If you think that you may be interested in anything to do with rocks in Ontario get this book. Well written with lots of background information. If your a caver, climber or weekend hiker you'll like this one. Great photo's and side stories.

The book gives accounts of non-quantum optical phenomena and of instruments and technology based on them, at a level suitable for the last two years of an honours degree in physics and for graduates starting out. Topics covered include the conventional (diffraction, coherence, thin films, holography...) but also the less conventional (etendue, Gaussian beams, laser cavities, cd reader, confocal microscope...) which belong in today's university courses, for example, to support laser physics. Even the conventional material has frequently been given a fresh presentation by giving a tidier-than-usual route through a calculation, or finding insightful connections with other parts of physics, or simply avoiding common errors. Problems offer opportunities for checking the reader's basic understanding, or for taking a careful route through reasoning, or for checking orders of magnitude. But most problems contain exploratory and critical material: investigating possible alternative approaches, asking searching questions about fundamentals, or solving apparent paradoxes.

Intermediate text, very readable, conversational tone..........2006-02-10

Born and Wolf is a classic, but tough sledding at times. If it is a common topic in optics, you probably will prefer reading about it here instead. This book has a nice conversational tone, gives insight, and is reasonably detailed (but not exhaustive). It includes a lot of practical advice in small-type paragraphs in margins throught book (for example, the chapter on thin films notes that the refractive index can often vary with deposition method, etc.).

Yes and No.......2004-05-19

A previous reviewer has suggested that this book's breezy style contributes to readability but limits the utility of the book for those who seek a substantive and quantitative understanding of optics. In this he is correct. In his assertion that the book's oversimplifications are, "presumably," appropriate for optometry students, he is mistaken. To suggest this is analagous to suggesting that cliff's notes are acceptable for students of physics but not of literature. After all, physicists, bless their sweet souls, could not comprehend the full text versions!

If you are a student in an introductory optics course (in any field), this book's style may help you get your footing. If you are not a beginner, or you want to understand the mathematical basis (derivations) of paraxial optics' formalisms and assumptions, this book is not for you.

Of course, it would be absurd to suggest that any work is, by itself, sufficient for the study of any discipline.

Pleasant light intro, but exercises too trivial........1999-05-08

For several semesters, I used the text by Pedrotti and Pedrotti in my 1-semester Optics course for Physics majors. But needing a change, I eventually switched a few years ago to Meyer-Arendt, and despite growing misgivings, have taught the course from his book 3 times so far. It appealed by its brevity, large variety of topics offered, lively historical anecdotes, and appeared somewhat more amusing and less dry than the solid, thorough, careful book by P & P. In those respects, it did not disappoint.

However, I need to warn potential readers and adopters of a serious downside: exercises are TOO simple--usually 1-step plug-and-chug jobbies. They may be adequate for future optometrists, who were, presumably, a large part of Dr. Meyer-Arendt's original audience. But they offer no real workout or skill-building exercise worthy of a Physics or Math major. The text also seems to bend over backwards to be "user-friendly" to the least skillful readers--rather than "scare away" anyone still at the "Sophomore level," it tends to fade out into vague descriptive language at the ends of chapters or whenever the topic at hand threatens to become a little bit sophisticated. No science student can solve any quantitative problems based on such hand-waving "snippets," so what good does this do?? No skill is imparted by these weak chapter-endings--but every mature Physics student knows that skill-building ability is the one indispensable criterion of value in a textbook. Unless a reader/teacher has the wherewithal to invent adequate problems to accompany the text, he should be aware of this practical limitation of the book as a learning tool.

With all respect, I APPEAL TO THE AUTHOR to rescue his rather entertaining, breezy book by adding problems worthy of intelligent science students. And to shore up many chapter-ends, replacing the descriptive fluff with usable, quantitative material--if need be, putting it in optional sections that "eyeglass-doctors," bless their good souls, can skip.

Quick Reference Guide.......2000-07-26

This particular reference of the Kings and Queens of Britain provides 2-3 page autobiographies of each monarch from a complete chapter dedicated to the Saxon Kings, and from William the Conqueror to George VI. It provides a breakdown of the eight dynasties that has been seated on the throne from 1066 to 1952 along with detailed family trees for each dynasty. The book also provides detailed maps so the reader can get a visual idea of how Britain was created from the Norman Conquest 1067-72, The Dominions of Henry II Plantagenet 1154-89, to the Hundred Years' War, the War of the Roses, and the Civil War. This reference also has a chapter on Irish kings and a chapter on Scotish kings as well. This reference is good for people who just want a little overview of each king or queen of Britain. For anything deeper, I suggest an individual autobiography for each monarch.

good ethnography but bad writing.......2006-11-14

This could be a better ethnography if the author does not play his jargons. i feel overall the book presents a very interesting perspective approaching the shifting of authority of shari'a in relating to the modernization of Islamic state. In terms of the ethnographical details and the theoretical undertaking, the book is definitely the first rate. However, I cannot enjoy the reading since the author sometimes overthrows theorectical jargons in his descriptions, which in turn obscures his arguments. Thus, I rate this book relative lower. And I do hope a book with such an interesting idea can be written in more precise language.

Ethnograpy of the Shari'ah.......2003-06-19

Messick's work is perhaps one of the most interesting approaches to studying the shari'ah ever written. His focus and approach is that of an anthropologist, hence the ethnographic character of the book; however, at the same time he maintains a keen understanding of both history and fiqh throughout.

The locus of this work is nearly entirely dominated by the highlands of Yemen and Ibb, the location of Messick's own ethnogrpahic study. Through the filter of Yemeni culture and the vast changes occuring there, Messick weaves a tale of what happenned theoretically, structurally, socially, politically, etc. to the practice of the Shari'ah within Yemeni society--oscillating between pre-modern, pre-bureacratic practices of the imamate, the effects of Ottoman reforms and the nationalist efforts at modernization.

As is fitting in the context, a keen regard is kept throughout the work for the dialectial aspects of textuality and orality and how as the scales increasing tip in favor of textualized, bureacratic order Yemeni society is utterly transformed. We then are able to see how the shariah was reshaped from a central discourse of the Muslim polity into "Islamic Law" as yet another component of governance have been repositioned within the framework of the nation-state.

Major Disappointment.......2006-09-15

After reading the reviews I could not wait to recieve this book.
To be honest if it go lost in the mail I would of been happier.
Totally disjointed reading, found myself skipping around for lack of grabbing my attention, I ended up moving along to my next book.

Stimulating to one's gray matter........2002-03-15

I bought my copy of David's book from a store before I discovered Amazon.Com. As the clerk bagged the book for me she jokingly remarked "Well this looks like relaxing read for the weekend". This book is more fun to read then the title let's on. However, I don't think It was compiled as well as some other works like in the author's lost cities series. David's chapter on Einstein and unified field was good but the rest of the book looked a little thrown together. Even compulations should be well ordered. And, I am not saying this because my copy was bound with some extra duplicate pages either.

I appreciate the author's open mindedness on many issues. If this work were someones first read of this author they might be tempted to underestimate the rest of his work. I am saying this as fan.

Are you stuck in your thinking, or can you entertain new theories, new thoughts, a new approach to thinking? What we see is not all there is. We live amongst unseen (but not unfelt) waves and vibrations which impact us daily. Yet, we go about our lives in an unthinking way because we cannot actually "see" radio waves and their impact upon us. Yet, they do impact us. Is your mind open or closed to new ideas about who we are and the world around us? Einstein told us that energy and mass are interchangeable. If that doesn't blow you away, then you're a perfect candidate to read this book.

Childress, in his Anti-Gravity books, theorizes that Gravity can be controlled and warped into a field around us, providing propulsion for flying saucers and other aircraft. Apparently, he says, UFOs are already using a kind of technology like this, utilizing the Unified Field of Gravity, Magnetism and Electricity.
