5 out of 5 stars Work at what you love!!.......2006-05-29

Nancy Anderson's unique book, Work with Passion, is unlike anything I've ever read. It's a one-of-a-kind, hands-on, practical approach to getting paid to do what comes naturally to you. This is not a job hunt book. It's about the process that takes you to knowing your life's work, what's enjoyable for you, the job or business that uses all of your talents and skills. Doing this work gives you deep personal satisfaction, and all the money you need.

Work with Passion is different from other career books because it connects the emotional and psychological intricacies of early family life to the subconscious blocks that inhibit personal and financial success. I discovered this connection six years ago after I worked through the exercises in the book. I am still amazed by the transformation and changes that have occurred and are still occurring in my life since then. The process was slow and often painful, but it led me to freedom from the past. I've learned that the journey should be enjoyed because that's how you come to know yourself and what you love. The hardest part was letting go of what's familiar and trusting in the unknown. It's been a struggle to dissolve the myth that work should be drudgery, but three years ago I moved to Madrid, Spain and created my own business doing what I love most, language and communication coaching. The journey and process are still unfolding, but thanks to the work Nancy's book encouraged me to do, I'm at a place in my life that I had only dreamt of when I was younger.

5 out of 5 stars Life Changing.......2006-05-15

This book was the foundation upon which I was able to change my life from that of an frustrated CEO to an independent business woman, wife, mother and friend. Nancy's process uncovered so many "ahh hahhhhh" moments that the dots connected themselves. I found myself breathing deeper, living lighter and seeing a brighter future. All of my relationships have improved -- including the one with myself! It has been three years since I started the my "Work With Passion" journey and my life is amazingly fulfilled. I thank Nancy and her guidance for showing me the way. I now recommend this book to all of my friends. An easy way to find a better life path.

5 out of 5 stars Work passionately, live passionately!.......2006-05-11

Nancy Anderson doesn't just show you how to find a career you're passionate about she shows you how to find a life you're passionate about!

As I worked my way through my autobiography, and the other enlightening excercises in the book, I watched the hardened exterior of my old life crack and fall away, exposing the shine of a new life as bright as freshly polished silver.

I recommend this book to anyone who is tired of being and working the way others think they "should" and to those who are tired of making excuses for not doing the work they love and living the life they deserve.

Life is precious, live it now. This book will show you how.

4 out of 5 stars Fuel the Passion Inside.......2006-05-07

"Do not let mediocre people discourage you," writes Nancy Anderson as she encourages her readers to discover the passion within and apply it to their lives. Such passion will attract other people to you. She notes, "People cooperate with people for mutual gain in a trade-off situation."

On the examined life, she includes an exercise whereby you can write the epitaph for your life. In essence, mine was to live passionately as a steward to Jesus Christ, maximizing the resouces He provided for me to serve as steward over.

She has some insightful things to say about how our work defines us, telling us, "It is through the dignity of the work we do that we achieve self-esteem in life." Anderson is a big advocate of enjoying life's journey, reminding readers that life can be adventurous and provide satisfaction.

5 out of 5 stars what's your passion?.......2006-05-07

Centuries ago, Socrates had observed that "the unexamined life is not worth living." Nancy's structured approach of obtaining and having a meaningful career through passion takes this ancient advice of self-examination to a very practical level. The first two chapters of this book are probably the most challenging because the reader is guided to write his/her own autobiography. It was just for this fact alone I'd decided to buy this book and use it in my new career path re-adjustment. I could not ever imagine that having my abridged life story `spilled' over eighty or so pages, that I could see it quite differently; sort of a perspective shift - from a frog's perspective to bird's view. But as my intuition/curiosity stirred me toward this book, the results were forthcoming. I had found and reconfirmed myself as a "solo type" in a contrast to "the partnership type" and "the team type", as Nancy classifies the basic personal traits in chapter six. No wonder my business venture with a partner ended in a hostile split (short of a fist-fight), nor was it a big surprise for me to realize the motivation for my escape from a Communist country decades ago. Surely, every person is a complex being, but there are preferred and detrimental conditions for one's own existence. Learning about passionate activities and analyzing happy moments in one's life brings more understanding what is important; we tend to habitually focus on analyzing our miseries. In this regards, Nancy accomplished through her approach and her writing style a major feat, not found in other career/personal growth books.

I'd like to mention that I am fortunate that Nancy lives in the neighboring county, and that she still offers private sessions; one-on-one in person or by the phone. She is in a real life as true to a client as she is as a writer to a reader. I had to research her past with a great effort; she is very humble about her accomplishments.
The consultations are useful for "decoding" of the autobiography. Nancy has a great gift to see the underlying patterns that we operate on - our choices of partners, employers and so on. The reader, a passion seeker, does the nitty-gritty work; sessions with her are not `make me feel good again.'

The book is only eleven chapters long, but do not let this fact mislead you. Nancy is a very efficient, eloquent and precise writer - there is never a doubt about what she means. In this book, there are real people stories, there are sample approach letters.
Buy and use this book.

4 out of 5 stars Encouraging and Motivational.......2004-02-05

This book helps you to discover your passion, build upon your strength, and take the necessary action that leads to fulfillment. It clearly delineates the "ten passion secrets" advocated by the author. It begins with knowing what you want, i.e., defining your goal and ends with arriving at your destination. In between those two steps are the other eight which comprise the process entailed.

The insightful reflection she offers encourages you to enjoy the process of achievement, not just focus on the result. On commitment, she reminds us, "We develop a commitment to whatever we have spent time on: the more time, the stronger the commitment." She reinforces the importance of putting goals down on paper, noting that words in print are more permanent, they remind us of what we were thinking at a give time.

She has some creative things to say about creativity. "The artist, like the entrepreneur, is primarily a solo type. Their values are generally not those of the majority of the population," she writes. In terms of like attracting like, she adds, "The only mind that can understand a creative mind is one that is also creative!" This is an insightful book. It's major drawback is it limits things to "looking in" for guidance, when God offers so much more for Christians.

5 out of 5 stars The best of 100 or so self-help books I have read........2001-09-02

In my early 20's I was an avid reader of self-help and psychology books. I took seminars, workshops, and volunteered in self-help groups for 2 years. I read books literally by the dozen.

I read "Work with Passion" about 5 years ago. It is the only book I can honestly recommend, as it is the only book which ever caused me to change my behavior. Assuming that such a change is the goal of reading a book geared towards helping one's self, then it alone was successful with me.

In reading it I became particularly in touch with the interests I had as a child. Upon reading it, I proceeded to fine-tune my college studies, and two years later had a job in the specialized field I had re-discovered through reading this book.
One thing I hadn't been aware of is that the author offers counseling in Marin County (call 411 for her number). Due to the recession, I am now in a state of career flux once again, and intend on using her personal services for the first time.

Though it helped me, this book may not resolve another person's lengthy (in my case 7 years) search for the "true" profession. However, if you intend on buying a book to help you out, do include this one.

5 out of 5 stars One of the best I have read........2001-06-19

I highly recommend this book for those individuals that are self motivated and ready for a job change. For ten years now, I have read many, many books about careers and career counseling. This is truely the first book on careers that I read cover-to-cover in two days. I can't say that about any other career book, and that includes Richard Bolles' books. Of the 20-plus books I've read, this book gave me the information about changing careers in a way that felt comfortable, interesting, and most importantly empowering.

1 out of 5 stars Trendy Career Cheerleading ... but No Substance.......2000-08-07

I just don't understand the 5 star ratings this book has received so far.

This book offers just a very general motivational approach ... with good luck stories and such. There is no problem-solving, practicality, or real vocational guidance.

I didn't even find it inspirational because it sounded too ... too much like (metaphorically): "throw yourself off the cliff if you've always dreamed of doing so, because the river will carry you" ... even though you still don't know "which cliff" you want to "leap off" of ... much less how to find OUT which one ... and to what PURPOSE it may even serve ... forget it!! I don't THINK so!! This book has a pop new-agish appeal to it that's overly idealistic, glossy ... with a light, superficial, nebulous, happy-happy-joy-joy feel to it. I finished it feeling depressed. It was like going on and on, praising EXCITEDLY some great present for a child, but leaving the innocent with no clue has to WHAT it is or how s/he can get to it. Taunting.

If one is lucky enough to already know EXACTLY what one wants and just needs a little rallying to go out and DO it, who knows: this book might help such a person. Otherwise, forget it. For myself, this book was a huge disappointment and (another) waste of my money and time.

(You might like to read my other reviews if you're interested in the few career books I HAVE found helpful.)

5 out of 5 stars Work with Passion.......2000-01-24

I would give this book my highest recommendation. It was extremely interesting to work through and the size of it is not daunting whatsoever. It gives the reader a structure and a well-thought out process to work through to define what one's passion actually is - not an easy thing for many of us! In fact, it's a wonderful book to help you define yourself - especially if you have had life changes or feel stale and in need of a change.

It's rather hard to find the perfect job until you define what lights you up on every level. When you have worked through the process, it's amazing how opportunity presents itself in just the right way!

      4 out of 5 stars It's never too late!.......2000-05-08

Nancy Anderson has done an admirable job of examining the truths of human nature and success, and then using those truths to direct the reader toward self-fulfillment. The most interesting and revolutionary concept is that success comes from our search for self-fulfillment, and not vice-versa. Her anecdotes are down-to-earth and effective, and I found myself my own situation revealed in more than one of them. The "Law of Interest" made me smile more than once! Deja vu... A must read for anyone who is not completely content with their place in the work world.

            Book Description

This volume provides the first sustained treatment of the legal theory of Eduard Gans (1789--1839) and the first translation of Gans's Systems of Roman Civil Law in Outline (1827). Hegel's close personal friend and recognized leader of the Hegelian movement, Gans posthumously edited Hegel's Philosophy of Law and Philosophy of History. As Professor of Law in Berlin, Gans championed legal codification in opposition to Savigny and the Historical School of Jurisprudence. Hoffheimer argues that Gans's legal writings, especially his systematic exposition of Roman Law, combined a brilliant application of Romanist legal scholarship with a creative, original vision of Hegelian methodology. The teacher of Karl Marx and Felix Mendelssohn, Gans promoted a liberal interpretation of Hegel and influenced an important generation of German thinkers.

This book lacks the spooky charm that was abundant in the author's other book, "Ghostly Tales and Mysterious Happenings of Old Monterey." Although there are one or two good stories, the majority of the tales in this book are brief and vague. They tell of people feeling a strange presence at one place, or seeing ghostly fog in another. It leaves the reader wanting. If you enjoy the atmosphere of the Monterey Peninsula and want a good ghost story for a dark and stormy night, then I suggest "Ghostly Tales and Mysterious Happenings of Old Monterey" over this book. Both are by the same author.

I don't care for (or much understand) economics. And I often find history to be very dry.

This book, however, was a VERY enjoyable read. I originally checked it out of the library because I needed some information for a paper I was writing...and I was hooked enough to buy this books and others by this author.

Braudel sees the big picture AND the details -- and not only that, he writes in such an interesting manner that I was able to assimilate a vast amount of information before I knew it.

We conceive of and describe the world in ways that usually work just fine, but in the far corners of the labyrinth of reason, our best intentions fold back on themselves, and we end up trapped in an intractable loop or tumbling down a chute of infinite regress. Labyrinths of Reason is a collection of classic philosophical thought experiments and other imponderables that push reason and language to their logical limits. Beyond just idle brainteasers, William Poundstone shows that these mental exercises have profound implications for such fields as cryptography, decision theory, subatomic physics, and computer programming. But most of all, they're good, clean philosophical fun!

                                                    Book Description

This sharply intelligent, consistently provocative book takes the reader on an astonishing, thought-provoking voyage into the realm of delightful uncertainty--a world of paradox in which logical argument leads to contradiction and common sense is seemingly rendered irrelevant.

This is a fun book on logic, pardoxes and puzzles. It's a good mental tune-up and reminder of the limits of what we think we know. Poundstone is an entertaining writer who knows how to take us through the logical steps without making feel like work.

                                                    4 out of 5 stars Thought-provoking treatment.......2007-10-02

Though LoR covers well-worn ground, it does so both ably and entertainingly. The paradoxes Poundstone discusses are of the ages and for the ages; as long as humans think, they will never cease to fascinate, confound, and inspire. Anyone interested in language and reasoning and the relationship between mind and the external "objective" world will find much to chew on between the covers of LoR. LoR provides a gentle introduction to some very difficult topics in the philosophy of mind and the philosophy of science. It is well worth a read.

You should be math-oriented to get the most out of this book - but some of the paradoxes are dandy and the 'prisoner's dilemma' is always worth a review.

I enjoyed this book, but one should realize the audience for this work. I was a novcie to logic when I read this book and felt quite satisfied with the content and structure.

Labytinths does not overwhelm the reader; it introduces a fair amout of classic logic problems, scenarios, etc. Many of the examples offered would serve well in a high school math class.

5 out of 5 stars Great book on logic and the meaning of 'knowing'.......2004-02-29

I have to confess - I bought this book after reading Mr. Poundstone's book 'How would you move mount Fuji?' I probably never would have bought this book otherwise - and I'm glad I did.
So first of all - this is not a riddle book. Its a philosophy book trying to dismantle well know paradoxes in modern epistemology. It's not revolutionary in any way, but it collects its ideas from good sources and gives a nice and coherent view of the topic and the field.
I would recommend this book only to people willing to read slowly and think about what they read. The journey is not easy - but Mr. Poundstone would get you to your destination every time.
