Book Description
DEALS OF THE CENTURY
Throughout history, mergers and acquisitions have been the major game played on Wall Street. These deals have had far-reaching effects, on the worlds of finance and industry - more than most commentators or financiers are publicly willing to admit.
Deals of the Century captures this dynamic moment in history by taking an in-depth look at the most notable merger and acquisition deals of the twentieth of Carnegie Steel in 1901 to the creation of the former AOL Time Warner, renowned business historian and bestselling author Charles Geisst traces the deals that have had the most dramatic impact on the worlds of both finance and industry over the past century. Decade by decade, you'll be introduced to the personalities behind each event, as industries are built, dismantled, and reorganized by "professionals" driven mainly by the profits extracted from the deals themselves.
Engaging and informative,
Deals of the Century paints an exciting portrait of the incredible M&A journey and illustrates how many of these deals changed the face of business, creating a modern capitalist society that continues to grow.
Download Description
An exciting portrait of one of the most dynamic times in financial history
Consolidation, restructuring, and megadeals. These are the business events that have left an indelible impression on the worlds of finance and industry, as well as shaped the America we live in today. The deals made over the past century irrevocably changed employment patterns, created new industries, and gave rise to the modern American way of life. Deals of the Century captures this dynamic moment in history by taking an in-depth look at the most notable mergers of the twentieth century-and the role Wall Street played in each of them. This book skillfully illustrates how these deals changed the face of American life and created a modern American capitalist society that continues to grow. Beginning with J. P. Morgan's acquisition of Carnegie Steel in 1901 to form U.S. Steel, author Charles Geisst traces the deals that had the most dramatic impact on the worlds of both finance and industry over the past century. Decade by decade, readers will be introduced to the personalities behind each event, and the ultimate outcome of their ventures. Deals of the Century closes the door on this extraordinary time in financial history by discussing the merger of J. P. Morgan & Co. and Chase Manhattan.
Charles Geisst (Oradell, NJ) is the author of thirteen books, including Wheels of Fortune (0-471-21222-9) and the bestseller Wall Street: A History. Geisst has taught political science at the City University of New York, worked in banking and finance on Wall Street and in London as well as having consulted. His articles have been published in the International Herald Tribune, Neue Zurcher Zeitung, Newsday, and Euromoney. Since 1985 he has taught finance at Manhattan College where he is presently a professor of finance.
Customer Reviews:
A Good Read!.......2004-03-02
For all the headlines they grab, mega-mergers typically aren't a good deal for anyone but corporate executives and investment bankers. And guess what? This was just as true when J.P. Morgan created U.S. Steel in 1901 as it was when Steve Case engineered the AOL-Time Warner merger in 1999. Financial expert Charles R. Geisst dissects a century's worth of deals in fascinating detail. His conclusion: investor and regulator beware. Geisst's accessible style is a plus, and he manages to be skeptical but not jaundiced in this thorough, clear-eyed analysis. We suggest this book to any executive contemplating an M&A deal, and to any investor trying to cut through the hype surrounding mergers.

Book Description
This book is for students and researchers who have a specific interest in learning and memory and want to understand how computational models can be integrated into experimental research on the hippocampus and learning. It emphasizes the function of brain structures as they give rise to behavior, rather than the molecular or neuronal details. It also emphasizes the process of modeling, rather than the mathematical details of the models themselves.
The book is divided into two parts. The first part provides a tutorial introduction to topics in neuroscience, the psychology of learning and memory, and the theory of neural network models. The second part, the core of the book, reviews computational models of how the hippocampus cooperates with other brain structures--including the entorhinal cortex, basal forebrain, cerebellum, and primary sensory and motor cortices--to support learning and memory in both animals and humans. The book assumes no prior knowledge of computational modeling or mathematics. For those who wish to delve more deeply into the formal details of the models, there are optional "mathboxes" and appendices. The book also includes extensive references and suggestions for further readings.
Customer Reviews:
Good reading hippocampus.......2003-08-05
reading this book, i think very interesting neural network modeling hippocampus. so GOOD
An extremely useful introductory text.......2002-03-06
To those students, mostly at the undergraduate level, that are not applied mathematic specialists and have looked for an easy to understand, well written, introduction to Neural Networks in learning processes; this is a must-have book. "Gateway..." is an excellent read, targeted to readers from a wide scope of backgrounds, from Biologists to Computer Science Majors through Medical Sciences.
Although leaning a bit too heavily on the conceptual view of the subject, the book introduces the reader gradually to what a Neural Network is, what a computer model is and how it works.
Two basic tools are of special interest to the reader. First, the beginning half of the book gives a general, yet very complete, introduction of the concepts, history and theory to be used. Second, for those with a little more interest in the mathematics there's a good number of "Math Boxes" delving into the details of the subject(s).
The effect of these tools is that, by the time you reach into the core matter of how neural networks models are constructed and worked in the field of Hippocampal memory, the reader suddenly finds his/herself well-familiarized with the theory. A comfortable, gradual, learning process has taken place without any discomfort (and in less time than you would think!).

Book Description
Leon Cooper's somewhat peripatetic career has resulted in work in quantum field theory, superconductivity, the quantum theory of measurement as well as the mechanisms that underly learning and memory. He has written numerous essays on a variety of subjects as well as a highly regarded introduction to the ideas and methods of physics for non-physicists. Among the many accolades, he has received (some deserved) one he likes specially is the comment of an anonymous reviewer who characterized him as "a nonsense physicist".
This compilation of papers presents the evolution of his thinking on mechanisms of learning, memory storage and higher brain function. The first half proceeds from early models of memory and synaptic plasticity to a concrete theory that has been put into detailed correspondence with experiment and leads to the very current exploration of the molecular basis for learning and memory storage. The second half outlines his efforts to investigate the properties of neural network systems and to explore to what extent they can be applied to real world problems.
In all this collection, hopefully, provides a coherent, no-nonsense, account of a line of research that leads to present investigations into the biological basis for learning and memory storage and the information processing and classification properties of neural systems.

Book Description
* Major new book explaining the science, policy, and politics of climate change and what it means for the future of humanity and planet Earth
* Presents all of the key data, provides easy-to-follow explanations, and tackles the "climate change skeptics" head-on
* Authored by one of the world’s leading climate researchers and backed by the Climate Impact Group of the prestigious Commonwealth Scientific and Industrial Research Organisation (CSIRO)
Barrie Pittock, one of the world’s leading climate researchers, argues that we need to act urgently to avoid increasingly severe climate change. This timely book sorts fact from fiction as the author examines the arguments surrounding the reality of climate change and the divergent views of greenhouse skeptics and doom-and-gloom alarmists.
Pittock looks at the controversy around global warming and other predicted changes, especially:
· The scientific basis of the changes observed to date
· How they relate to natural variations
· Why the evidence points to larger changes later this century
Climate Change: Turning up the Heat explains how our attitudes toward risk and uncertainty – constant companions in life – influence our decision-making and, ultimately, how much we and future generations stand to lose from rapid climate change. It outlines the current concerns of the major international players and reviews the response to date, detailing national interests. Importantly, it shows there is real hope of managing climate change and minimizing the risk of disaster if we step up efforts to develop and apply innovative technological and policy solutions.
