Book Description

Book Description
The Upper Río Orthon Basin of Pando, Bolivia, is a transition zone between moister lowland Amazonian forests and dryer deciduous forests. This largely unexplored region potentially harbors one of the most richly biodiverse aquatic systems within Bolivia, if not within the Amazon River basin. A multinational and multidisciplinary team of scientists surveyed the area to provide a baseline assessment of its biological and conservation value as well as the current and future threats facing the region. In just over two intensive weeks, scientists surveyed water quality, zooplankton, benthic macroinvertebrates, crustaceans, fishes, and genetics.

Book Description
The third edition of this comprehensive Dictionary covers the whole field of physical geography and provides an essential reference for students and lecturers. This edition has been substantially updated with the help of an advisory board of international experts in a range of key areas. Many of the entries are new or have been fully revised, with a large amount of additional material on new themes and topics. The dictionary includes coverage of geomorphology, climatology, biogeography, zoogeography, hydrology, pedology, the Quarternary, GIS, remote sensing and the human impact. It contains over 2000 entries ranging in length from succinct definitions of technical terms to extended discussions of concepts and essays on themes of particular interest or importance. The Dictionary reflects changes within the discipline and provides an international perspective on the key topics of physical geography. The entries are self-contained or cross-referenced with further reading and references for those who wish to develop themes further.
Customer Reviews:
Good overall coverage..........2005-02-11
Compiled, written, edited, and overseen by some of the world's most prominent Geographers, this dictionary covers everything the educated layperson could want to know about Physical Geography. The entries are concise where they need to be (e.g., "alluvium") and expanded where necessary (e.g., "rock coatings"). If you were to expand the glossaries of BOTH a basic Physical Geography text AND a basic Geomorphology text, this is what you would have.
Although not as heavy with references as its predecessor, the venerable "Dictionary of Human Geography," it nonetheless fills a good-sized gap in Geography reference literature. It is not a "dictionary of geography terms/places" nor is it a "dictionary of geologic terms." It simply takes the broad field of Phyiscal Geography and expands upon hundreds of often- and lesser-used terms, concepts, and ideas. It has proven very useful throughout my doctoral studies, and will no doubt serve me well into the future of academia.
After being thoroughly acquainted with the "Dictionary of Human Geography," I was hoping for more citations after each entry. That is, in my eyes, its only downfall. It is also several years old now, and hopefully a new edition will be published soon.

Book Description
This volume provides definitions and historical perspective for specialized and technical concepts used in current research and writing in the field of physical geography. Of particular value to the serious student and professional in geography and related fields, the dictionary covers some 100 major concepts and provides the most complete reference available in the field to date. For each concept, the authors provide detailed definitions, arranged from the earliest to the most recent. They proceed to describe the historical growth of each term using original research works for references whenever possible. This enables the researcher to see how the concept has evolved over time, how it is currently used, and what the general direction of research might be in the future. Each entry also includes a list of prominent references concerning the concept and a bibliography of additional sources of information available such as texts, literature, reviews, important articles, and bibliographies. Complete cross referencing of concepts and an appendix that groups concepts into broad categories make the dictionary an especially valuable reference tool for both beginning students interested in the scope of physical geography and advanced students pursuing graduate study in the field.

The Descent of Man (Great Minds Series)
ASIN: 0674992814 |
Book Description
Aristotle, great Greek philosopher, researcher, reasoner, and writer, born at Stagirus in 384
BCE, was the son of Nicomachus, a physician, and Phaestis. He studied under Plato at Athens and taught there (367-347); subsequently he spent three years at the court of a former pupil, Hermeias, in Asia Minor and at this time married Pythias, one of Hermeias's relations. After some time at Mitylene, in 343-2 he was appointed by King Philip of Macedon to be tutor of his teen-aged son Alexander. After Philip's death in 336, Aristotle became head of his own school (of 'Peripatetics'), the Lyceum at Athens. Because of anti-Macedonian feeling there after Alexander's death in 323, he withdrew to Chalcis in Euboea, where he died in 322.
Nearly all the works Aristotle prepared for publication are lost; the priceless ones extant are lecture-materials, notes, and memoranda (some are spurious). They can be categorized as follows: I Practical: Nicomachean Ethics; Great Ethics (Magna Moralia); Eudemian Ethics; Politics; Economics (on the good of the family); On Virtues and Vices. II Logical: Categories; Analytics (Prior and Posterior); Interpretation; Refutations used by Sophists; Topica. III Physical: Twenty-six works (some suspect) including astronomy, generation and destruction, the senses, memory, sleep, dreams, life, facts about animals, etc. IV Metaphysics: on being as being. V Art: Rhetoric and Poetics. VI Other works including the Constitution of Athens; more works also of doubtful authorship. VII Fragments of various works such as dialogues on philosophy and literature; and of treatises on rhetoric, politics and metaphysics.
The Loeb Classical Library edition of Aristotle is in twenty-three volumes.
Customer Reviews:
Useful for the specialist and the student.......2005-01-10
Like most volumes in the Loeb series, the emphasis is not on word-for-word precision in the translation, but on acheiving greater readability in broader terms. Since the original text in ancient Greek is provided on the facing page, the editors assume that anyone with a little knowledge of Greek can supplement the looseness of the translation by referring to the original. And in general, the compromises made in this way are good ones throughout the series. In this case, perhaps, the translation may be a little too loose, and also given over to some unfortunate jargon that can distort Aristotle's meaning. But even so, this is still a very useful text for the specialist or the student.

Book Description
This book provides a new literary treatment of an often-overlooked collection of fragmentary poems from the third century B.C.E. Alexandrian poet Callimachus. Callimachus' Iambi form a collection of thirteen poems, which rework archaic Greek iambography and look forward to Roman satire and other genres, especially to such collections as Horace's Epodes. The poems are especially significant as examples of cultural memory since they are composed both as an act of commemorating earlier poetry and as a manipulation of traditional features of iambic poetry to refashion the iambic genre. This book fills a significant gap by providing the first complete translation of several of these fragmentary poems in English, along with line-by-line commentary, notes, and literary analysis.
The structure of the book is thematic, with chapters focusing on such topics as poetic voice, fable, ethical criticism, and statuary. Each chapter consists of an introduction, text and selected critical apparatus, translation, and comprehensive thematic discussion. Acosta-Hughes focuses especially on Callimachus' manipulation of traditional features of archaic iambic poetry such as persona loquens, ethical and critical message, and eristic dialogue. He also includes a detailed analysis of the Alexandrian poet's artistic relationship with the earlier iambic poets Archilochus and Hipponax.
Polyeideia will interest not only readers of Greek and Hellenistic poetry but also readers of Roman satire and invective verse, as well as those intrigued by the processes of memorializing and fashioning poetic culture.
