Business Club Winner (weiner).......2004-10-29

My college business club has long had the practice of selecting one book as the "must read" book of the semester to develop our skill set and promote our careers. We all look for books (besides the national best sellers everyone has read) to share with the group. One of our members stumbled onto 20/20 Insight and brought it to the rest of us, not because it was a candidate, but because it was so bad. I borrowed his copy to see if it was as bad as he made it out to be. I tried to read it, but it was too bad. It only got worse as I went. I tried to skim it just to get through it, but it is so poorly done and makes no point that I had to quit and get back to my studies. It has earned a spot on a newly created shelf in our library as the first initiation into our "holy crap someone published this!" shelf. I don't know where these five star, generic reviews came from, but they either didn't read the book, are trying to sell their copy, or are related to the sucker who wrote it.

Must be the dumbest colleciton of blah ever printed........2004-10-16

I could not believe that this book oculd get worse as it went on. I admit, towards the end, with less than 1/5 to go, I quit. It was hopeless. There is nothing redeeming about this book. This is a true waste of paper. I feel for the tree that gave its life for this wasted effort for everyone involved.

Don't waste your time on this book and don't waste any more of your time considering purchasing this book. I've never read a book which is so confusing and pointless. 20/20 Insight is the wrong title - they should call it "Read this book and you won't be able to see a thing" or "Turn off the lights and begin to not understand anything about business." This guy must be blind when it comes to the world of consulting. I've never been so confused after reading a book. I kept reading hoping things would get better, but I just become more and more confused. His examples are silly and don't really apply. Again, don't read this book!!!!!

20/20 Insight.......2001-08-06

I found this book to be excellent!! Anyone that wants to transform their life, finances and business should read this book. Randy Gibbs puts everything into perspective and very manageable so that anyone can make the proper changes. I highly recommend this book to anyone!!

One of the MUST READ Books of the year!!.......1999-04-01

Randys insights into making lasting changes are among the best I have ever read or tried. He delivers real everyday "How To's" and it's obvious that he teaches what he has done himself. This is one of the best books I have read and used.

Only buy if you're an Academic.......2004-02-12

The book claims to be of use to "practitioners and academics", however this book is of nil to minmal use to anyone actually working in construction project management.

The indepth modelling analysis (and almost exclusively empirical) is of no use to industry, although probably serves well as a statistics course lesson. The complex and empirical tools may have been of use in days gone by when programming and cost and revenue control software did not exist to the extent they do today.

Disappointing waste of money. Do not rely on the editorial brief in making the decision to buy this book.

Space, Time, Matter, and Form collects ten of David Bostock's essays on themes from Aristotle's Physics, four of them published here for the first time. The first five papers look at issues raised in the first two books of the Physics, centred on notions of matter and form, and the idea of substance as what persists through change. Morrison examines the legacy of the modernist poetics of Ezra Pound and T.S. Eliot, as it relates to current theoretical orthodoxies, and traces its influence on the current crisis in post-structural literary theory. Morrison reads the politics of post-structural theory in relation to the socio-cultural arguments espoused in the poetry and prose by Pound and Eliot, and reveals a continuity between that theory and high modernism's tendency towards fascism. Without reducing the political implications of poetry to mere caricature and without slighting the force and fact of literary mediation, Morrison has produced a book that will reshape the discussion of the social dimension of modernism. He concludes with a provocative analysis of deconstruction and the work of Paul de Man, and makes a case for a new post-structural theory that can accommodate history.

Morrison's book is an interesting take on T.S. Eliot.......1998-12-11

Morrison's timely post-Marxist screed comments sagely upon a variety of contemporary critical debates. Those familiar with the polymathic cultural critic's briefer interventions will not despise this, his first sustained engagement with Modernism's embryonic (and full-blown) fascist affinities. Those who fashionably scorn and/or valorize Modernist pieties, or who rest secure in the "knowledge" that the Modernist trajectory has trailed off the cultural radar screen, will find much to raise hackles here. If, like a PoMo Pilate, you find yourself questioning Truth, but not staying for an answer, you'll really relate to the characters in this book, and you'll hate when it ends. There's some unnecessary talk about a guy called "Ideology," and frankly offensive references to a brother named "DeMan," but the true-to-life characterizations of the protagonists and visual descriptions of settings carry the reader through and make this page-turner impossible to put down. I hope Morrison keeps up writing like this, and I will recommend this book to all my co-workers.

Pete Moore's compilation of great ideas, titled E = MC-squared, is suitable for browsing or for a classroom reference source. However, many readers may find this collection not entirely satisfactory. The choice of entries is at times puzzling; some great ideas are missing while other more sensational, less significant contributions are included. Despite the title, only three pages discuss Einstein.

The text is divided into the following sections: The Nature of Nature, The Structure of Nature, The Earth, The Universe, Mathematics, Invention and Innovation, Evolution and Genetics, The Human Body, and The Brain. The Universe section, for example, contains four entries: Edwin Hubble (4 pages), George Gamow (3 pages), Fred Hoyle (3 pages), and Ilya Prigogine (2 pages). Each description typically includes a large photo of the scientist, a description of the great idea, and a timeline.

The more familiar I was with a topic, the more I questioned Moore's selections. In the mathematics section Rene Thom and John Nash were included, perhaps in part because Rene Thom's catastrophe theory is popular in the media as is also the story of John Nash's remarkable life. But where are Euclid, Leibniz, Gauss, Cantor, and Godel?

Likewise, I was quite surprised to find that Moore considered James Lovelock's Gaia theory to be one of the three great ideas in the earth sciences. Moore's other two choices (Charles Lyell's uniformitarianism and Alfred Wegener's continental drift)were reasonable ones, although I would have liked to seen some reference to the critical work on the mechanism responsible for continental drift by J. Tuzo Wilson, Marshall Kay, Frederick Vine, and others. Their work gave Wegener's speculative idea a firm theoretical basis.

Despite the occasional quirky inclusions and omissions, E = MC-squared does offer a leisurely way to become familiar with a wide range of scientific ideas that have shaped our world. The text may in some cases be criticized for being overly simplistic, but for the most part the explanations will prove useful to the layman.

Great Biography Factoid Book.......2005-07-11

This book provides a short 1-3 page biography for each of the most influencial scientists/thinkers that have helped shape the world we live in today. I gave it only 4 stars because there are some grammatical errors throughout the text. These errors however, do not affect the content. Great book!

Very bland book.......2005-04-20

I was very disappointed with the book. It is a VERY shallow view on many historical scientists. Frankly the book did nothing to me, it is so broad you will forget about it twenty minutes later. The biographical aspects mixed with the scientific contribution of that particular person amounts to virtually no information due to its brevity.
It was a bit amusing to see the author trying to compact string theory in one paragraph with no math, but what is the point really? At this level of detail you will not learn anything.
I can't imagine to what audience this book was written.

Not a Book About Einstein.......2003-02-04

REVIEW: This book is a good but brief (2 pages or less each) overview of about 75 individuals whose ideas have greatly influenced the world. It is targeted to a general audience and as it is fairly short its purpose is merely to introduce the individuals and their main influential ideas.

The book focuses mainly on Western civilization and then primarily on scientific and technical achievements. All the familiar names are here: Plato, Einstein, Newton, Darwin, Marx and many others not so famous. The author can easily be criticized for leaving out many important ideas, especially social or non-technical innovations, but this could probably be said about anyone's top 75 list of great ideas. If you are looking for a relatively easy to read book that introduces some of the most important thinkers of the past 4000 years, this book will do. Just don't expect a comprehensive book or a thorough explanation of the ideas. It may also make a good, light reference book for your bookshelf.

STRENGTHS: I especially liked the inclusion of a picture of each individual and some discussion of the person and not just their ideas. The book is easy to read and not too technical.

WEAKNESSES: As one would expect of a book of such breadth, there is not much depth to each discussion. Additionally, while not really affecting content, I think the book could have been a little more "professionally done". I found too many errors missed by editing and I thought the title and book cover very misleading (only a small portion of the book relates to Einstein). I also noticed some style changes that may indicate different authorship for certain sections.

Great layman's book.......2002-12-31

This book briefly describes historical figures who "shaped" our world in terms of science. Two or three pages are alotted for each person briefly describing their lives and accomplishments. If you're looking for equations and proofs then this isn't the book for you; however, if you want a basic understanding of important people of science and their concepts than this may be what you're looking for.
