Over the past few years the cocoa market has had to modify how it operates. Continued low prices, fewer companies trading, and both the perceived and real element of del credere risks have brought about the change. Those that remain have had to return to the fundamentals of their business - knowing the needs of their clients and above all, knowing the commodity. This affects everyone directly and indirectly involved in cocoa. In the past, exporters could rely on dealers sorting out some of their problems, and the factories off-loaded much of the risk of delivery onto the dealer. Current trading conditions make this more difficult. People outside this chain now have larger roles in cocoa than in the past, in particular, the banks, but also the shipping companies and the warehouses. All those in the chain of trade, from the exporter, dealer, and broker through the factory must improve not only their understanding of the market but of the difficulties faced by others in the commodity. Sedimentary geology as an integrated discipline..........2002-10-18

I think Leeder's textbook will appeal to anyone who's striving to learn more about sedimentology and dynamic stratigraphy. It's a concise, yet thorough introduction to many topics selected within the vast, ever-expanding (and worryingly so! ) field of sedimentary geology... The author's main goal was probably to provide readers with a clear sense of how well integrated sedimentary geology now is with many other branches of earth and life sciences, physics and chemistry. And in my opinion that aim is succesfully achieved. The book will be suitable read to all those who have already taken an introductory, comprehensive course in sedimentology, on the look for something else to be inspired in their reflections. Reading through many of the chapters, newcomers will learn how sedimentology gained many precious contributions from other sciences, as well as just how much of a contribution the discipline itself can be to the whole bandwagon of geology. It takes a holistic approach to Earth system science to highlight this, and the book hits this mark real well...
I appreciated particularly a brief, separate chapter dealing with the properties and stuctures of fine, cohesive sediments, which is a refreshing perspective on the physical and dynamical sedimentology of muds... And a longer one introducing sediment sources as resulting from the interaction of tectonics and erosional processes. What left me rather disappointed was a too cursory mention of base-level control on sedimentary successions, and its logical development into sequence stratigraphy, not as a preconceived model but as a new philosophy in tackling with the complexity of the stratigraphical record. But something had to be probably neglected or the tome would have become real cumbersome to handle physically! Also, I wonder whether Coriolis force really bears any influence upon such small-scale systems as lakes...? But this is an aside... All in all, the book is enjoyable and informative, the author's style pleasant and clear, the artwork excellent, and if you wanted to try out something alternative for mumbling on the hidden meanings of sands, muds and other slimy stuff we like so much, having a go at this book would be very much worth the price...

We integrated structural analysis of multichannel seismic data and isopach maps of the Quaternary sedimentary cover to evaluate how salt tectonics has influenced the stratigraphic evolution offshore the Gulf of Lions. The interplay between salt tectonics and sedimentation occurs at two scales. At local scale, listric normal faults create bathymetric relief able to deviate sediment transport axes, with implications on depocenters configuration. At depocenter scale, overburden vertical movements due to salt evacuation or salt diapiric rise create sub-basins, providing accommodation space for clastic deposition. These mechanisms have significant implications on the architecture and the internal organization of turbidite systems offshore the Gulf of Lions.

Sedimentary basin inversion, the shortening of formerly extensional basins, is accommodated mainly by compressional reactivation of extant faults and fractures across a wide range of scales. As such, inversion is a large-scale manifestation of Byerlee friction, the dynamic criterion for fault reactivation governing the effective shear strength of the shallow crust. Basin inversion generates distinctive deformational architecture, and it is implicated strongly in sedimentary basin exhumation. As a principal source of horizontal stress, inversion drives significant sedimentary porosity reduction and resultant fluid flow. Upper crustal deformation is critically dependent on fluid overpressure (i.e., pore fluid pressures greater than would be calculated from a hydrostatic gradient), and, perhaps more than in any other tectonic setting, overpressures are potentially large during sedimentary basin inversion. This review therefore includes discussion of the role of fluid overpressure in inversion and the evidence for it. Collectively, inversion has profound implications-good and bad-for the prospectivity of many petroliferous sedimentary basins. Thus, recognizing the evidence for basin inversion, quantifying its magnitude and understanding the mechanisms that accommodate inversion and other phenomena affected by it, have become essential components of the basin analyst's remit.
