Over all, the book was excellent. Keep in mind that I am new to welding, so the book looked pretty good to me. Personally, I could care less about the history of welding and the blacksmith in the very begining of the book, but from there, Richard Finch shows the reader how to set up a good Farm Welding shop and also tells the reader what tools are needed. He too goes over saftey in the next Chapter. He then talks about the different farm welding processes such as oxyacetylene, arc (stick) and MIG (wire fed). Finch also covers how to identify metals on and around the farm. Chapter 5 covers oxyacetylene cutting, heating and plasma cutting. From there on, he pretty much goes into all of the processes I prevously mentioned only in much greater detail. He also concentrates on some "hard to weld" metals such a cast iron and aluminum. At the end of the book, he has writen a very good referance guide on where to buy welding tools and acessories.
Over all, this is a very good book, especally for the farmer who does not know too much about welding already.

Make Sure You Already Know a Lot on Vampires..........2006-07-02

That book covers a lot, and honestly if you are unfamiliar with the topics dealt with, then you will feel lost at times; but that is hardly avoidable considering the quite impressive span of the work in question.

This being said, the style is very humorous and punny, so provided you're familiar with the material discussed there, you'll like this book. Yet, if you hate Psychoanalysis and/or Freudism (cheap psychoanalysis) then you may have some issues. Of course, the book doesn't discuss psychoanalysis, since it's not its point, but it's essentially a Freudian reading, and if you disagree with Freud's theories (the primal tribe and stuff like that) then you may shake your head now and then. But that won't be a problem at all if you're looking for deepened analysis of Vampire-ness.

An interesting book, but consider this before you read it..........2004-02-13

Lawrence Rickels has a very particular writing style that is often frowned upon because the 'average' reader cannot really handle it. It is jargonistic, self-inflating, self-validating, and extremely complex. Like many other writers of critical theory, Rickels is engaging in a discourse for those 'in the know.' This is not an introductory book on the subject of vampyrism, and I would not recommend it to any reader if they are not at first familar with contemporary psychoanalytic theory. I enjoy reading Rickels' writing because he loves to play around with word puns in a very witty way. Perhaps a better introduction to Rickels' writings would be his many short articles in various art exhibition catalogues (check your local university library). I do not think I would have enjoyed this book had I not had the opportunity to listen to Rickels' lectures. This book requires an active reader who is willing to struggle with the text (that is the beauty of theory, right? A sort of painful pleasure). That said, it can be rewarding if you are up for a challenge.

This book made me feel like I was being drained for the change. The author's language or way of thinking took me by surprise, put the bite on me, and then left me there. I am thinking his thoughts! As the title admits, this isn't another book about vampirism; it participates in vampirism: vampire lectures. Enter free willingly.

this was a bad book.......2003-06-10

When you first read this book you think to yourself how insightful and unique its contents were. Upon further analysis, however, you realize how absurd and useless the information really is. Lets give credit where it's due, this book captures you, so much in fact that you forget to question anything being written and assume as truth whatever Rickels is trying to say. This author makes it seem as though he is just trying to "sound smart" if I may resort to grade school type critique. The analysis is ridiculous and the complexity of the style in which it was written is unnecessary. I do not recommend this book to anyone studying vampires unless they are insane.

Technical but True.......2003-05-15

I bought this book along with several others because I was researching vampires. This is a great book but very technical. I believe it is written more for college students and people who would understand university 'lingo'. The book goes in depth into the psychological theories concerning vampires, why people believe in them, and even certain books like Dracula! I would recommend this book for any college or university level student or graduate who is interested in vampires.

Dictionaries are all about editorial choices, and this is especially true for dictionaries of biography and geography, because there are far more people and places in the world--now and from times past--than can possibly be contained in one volume.

Compare the Oxford Desk Dictionary of People and Places with a full-sized biographical dictionary, such as the Merriam-Webster edition, and you'll note dramatic differences. In overall number, of course, the Oxford Desk Dictionary has far fewer entries--a bit more than 7,500 individuals, compared with the 30,000 in Merriam-Webster's. But it includes many current notables that are omitted from the larger tome. Take a look at the B's, for example. Sure, the Oxford Desk Dictionary draws a blank when it comes to Bourgault Ducoudray (1840-1910, French composer and musicologist), Sir Richard Bourke (1777-1855, British soldier and Australian colonist), or John Bouvier (1787-1851, American lawyer and author of Law Dictionary). But Oxford does include George Booth (1926- , New Yorker cartoonist and author), Bjorn Borg (1956- , Swedish-born tennis champion), P.W. Botha (1916- , former prime minister of South Africa), Boutros Boutros Ghali (1922- , Egyptian diplomat and former Secretary General of the United Nations), and David Bowie (1947- , English rock singer)--none of whom can be found in Merriam-Webster's. And the Oxford font is twice the size, so what is there can be seen and appreciated without a loupe.

And then there's the geography component. Again, comparison with a full-sized geographical dictionary offers perspective. The Houghton Mifflin Dictionary of Geography, for example, claims more than 10,000 entries, plus maps. The Oxford Desk Dictionary of People and Places likewise offers more than 10,000 geographical entries, plus maps. For differences, take a look at the C's. Both dictionaries identify Colombo as the capital and largest city in Sri Lanka, but Houghton Mifflin goes on to provide a short history. They both include Colon, city in northern Panama, but the Oxford misidentifies its population at 140,900 (possibly referring to the larger metropolitan area), instead of the more accurate 59,840 in Houghton Mifflin. In addition, Houghton Mifflin includes Colonial Heights (Robert E. Lee's headquarters in southeast Virginia), colony (general definition), Colophon (ancient Greek city), and Conchos (river in northwest Mexico), whereas Oxford offers Colonia (resort city in Uruguay), the Colosseum (Roman amphitheater), Comilla (city in Bangladesh), and Congo (formerly Zaire).

The Houghton Mifflin maps are much better, but the Oxford Desk Dictionary is more up-to-date, more compact, and more convenient. You can't set too high a premium on space, and in one sturdy volume, Oxford provides both people and places. And if you're more interested in contemporary worthies than in notables from the distant past, then the Oxford Desk Dictionary of People and Places is the clear choice. --Stephanie Gold
