This book is exactly what I was looking. It provides an detailed overview of Lean Manufacturing, from its history to examples of implementation in US manufacturing facilities today.
If you are looking for a detailed overview and want to understand what lean manufacturing is all about, then I highly recommend this book. I have passed it on to our CEO (with specific sections marked) and it has sparked great discussion concerning our manufacturing methods.

BECOMING LEAN
Probably one of the better "lean" production books, because most books will tell you what lean production is. We have all heard the buzzwords, kaizen, quality circles, empowerment, kanban, benchmarking. but one is still left with their peculiar situation. There is always the thought that this particular company or industry is does not lend itself to lean production and is the exception to the rule. "Becoming Lean" is the account of some diverse companies on the road to lean production. The attempt of make each company fit a certain production model and achieve its goal. I recommend this book for teaching by example, instead of dealing with just theory.
A Data Bound Argument for Lean.......1999-01-28
This is the real stuff - not academic theory but real examples of "lean" written by the people that made it happen. The concluding chapter on "what we have learned about becoming lean" pulls it all together in a neat package. This is a must read for anyone who enjoyed Womack's book on "Lean Thinking". We have applied these learnings at this company with great results.
The most insightful first-hand account of implementing lean........1999-01-13
This book covers a number of great insights into the journey to leanness. It has the unique angle of having its case studies written by the people from the companies profiled in the studies. This gives a first hand review of the accomplishments and roadblocks that are part of becoming lean by those that went through them. Becoming Lean also gives accounts from people with personal experience from working for Toyota while they transplanted to North America to how the Japanese school system compares to and contrasts from the American school systems. In general, this book gives an excellent understanding that only a first-hand account can do. If you want to learn what it means to become lean this book is a must and should be used as a reference book while going through the lean transformation!

How did we get where we are just now? And, more importantly, what can we do about it? This book offers some keen insights into how the dot.com speculative bubble was created, and the mistakes in judgement that many of us made in the process. But rather than crying over "spilt" milk, it offers us sound ideas for picking up the pieces and building on from there. I like its brevity and flow, and the quotes from CEOs and luminaries, such as Baruch Lev,are appropriate rather than gratuitous. Good work.

This book is an introduction into modern cardinal arithmetic in the frame of the axioms of Zermelo-Fraenkel set theory together with the axiom of choice. A first part describes the classical theory developed by Bernstein, Cantor, Hausdorff, König and Tarski between 1870 and 1930. Next, the development in the seventies led by Galvin, Hajnal and Silver is characterized. The third part presents the fundamental investigations in pcf theory which have been worked out by Shelah to answer the questions left open in the seventies. This text is the first self-contained introduction to cardinal arithmetic which also includes pcf theory. It is aimed at undergraduates, and also at postgraduate students and researchers who want to broaden their knowledge of cardinal arithmetic. It gives a relatively complete survey of results provable in ZFC.

Is the continuum hypothesis still open? If we interpret it as finding the laws of cardinal arithmetic (really exponentiation since addition and multiplication were classically solved), it was thought to be essentially solved by the independence results of Godel and Cohen (and Easton) with some isolated positive results (like Galvin-Hajnal). It was expected that only more independence results remained to be proved. The author has come to change his view. This enables us to get new results for the conventional cardinal arithmetic, thus supporting the interest in our view. We also find other applications, extend older methods of using normal fiters and prove the existence of Jonsson algebra.

The claim has been made by modern mathematicians that Fermat could not have had a proof for the theorem he formulated. The reasons given for this conviction amount to a belief that some very convoluted and obscure modern mathematical techniques are needed to carry out the proof, techniques certainly not known by Fermat. (They are also largely unknown to mathematics professors of today.) Lively interest was generated by Talbott's book since he provided substantial evidence that Fermat could indeed have had a good proof before he died in 1665. Readers have suggested that a more formal statement of the proof be given, and this suggestion has been followed in DERIVATIVES IN CARDINAL ARITHMETIC. Talbott's book is sound, but this new paper makes the logic specially clear, and is a suitable conclusion to a long standing mathematical mystery.

Jaap Mansfeld and Frans de Haas bring together in this volume a distinguished international team of ancient philosophers, presenting a systematic, chapter-by-chapter study of one of the key texts in Aristotle's science and metaphysics: the first book of On Generation and Corruption. In GC I Aristotle provides a general outline of physical processes such as generation and corruption, alteration, and growth, and inquires into their differences. He also discusses physical notions such as contact, action and passion, and mixture. These notions are fundamental to Aristotle's physics and cosmology, and more specifically to his theory of the four elements and their transformations. Moreover, references to GC elsewhere in the Aristotelian corpus show that in GC I Aristotle is doing heavy conceptual groundwork for more refined applications of these notions in, for example, the psychology of perception and thought, and the study of animal generation and corruption. Ultimately, biology is the goal of the series of enquiries in which GC I demands a position of its own immediately after the Physics. The contributors deal with questions of structure and text constitution and provide thought-provoking discussions of each chapter of GC I. New approaches to the issues of how to understand first matter, and how to evaluate Aristotle's notion of mixture are given ample space. Throughout, Aristotle's views of the theories of the Presocratics and Plato are shown to be crucial in understanding his argument.

Another excellent collection of literary brain-teasers.......2001-08-28
Lovers of Mr. Rochester beware - in this, his second book of literary puzzles, John Sutherland turns his considerable powers of literary analysis towards, amongst other things, undoing the good reputation enjoyed by Jane Eyreýs brooding hero. Bronte fans, brace yourself for some idol-smashing. As in his first book of devoted to literary head-scratchers (the wonderful Is Heathcliff a Murderer?), Sutherland here sets himself out to answer some of Western literatureýs most intriguing questions. Though you might not always agree with some of the conclusions Sutherland comes to (we have to have a talk, he and I, about Mr. Rochesterýs moral integrity) as a writer he is always witty, as a thinker always innovative, and as a guide through literatureýs most baffling conundrums, always genial. Buy this book and I promise not only will you learn something (and, if youýre anything like me, get into some very heated debates with fellow literature lovers about Jane Eyreýs prospects for bliss, etc.) - but youýll also have a heck of a lot of fun.
Classics brought to life in a whole new light!.......2001-06-08
"Can Jane Eyre Be Happy" is only one of the many questions about classical literature you will have answered by this book. Other novels explored include "Great Expectations", "Mansfield Park", "Hound of the Baskervilles," and other novels of that genre and category. Sutherland's insights are simple and straightforward and his questions are probing and answer those sometimes irrelevant things your curiosity won't let you sit on! However, this book loses one star because Sutherland often does try to contradict the author and occasionally discards the author's motive in writing the novel. Also a warning: Don't read through the table of contents before you have read all the books addressed therein. Some of the questions assigned to each book will give away or ruin in part the ending to the novel. Luckily this is not a major setback. I do heartily recommend this book, but the reader must be open to new ideas about some of his or her favorite novels and authors, and must also take Sutherland's ideas with a pinch of skepticism.

As Sutherland points out, the 1835 act prohibited marriage with a deceased wife's sister. However, aside from this, she was not "too young to marry for a month or so." A girl could be married at 12 in Britain until the Age of Marriage Act of 1929, although the age of consent for sexual intercourse was raised 1n 1881 from 13 to 16. Whatever Roger Prynne's reasons for staying away, Massachussetts was not a place "where they like to burn witches and wizards." (They hanged them). I enjoyed combing for nits to pick.

God, I wish I had the brains John Sutherland. Why the heck don't we think of these things when we read? These puzzles are fascinating. I am amazed at the information John Sutherland brings out in these puzzles. A must for everyone who loves Victorian fiction.
