And that's pretty much all this book does. And truly I'd be okay with that if it were at all well written or offered ANY real insight into his method. Y'know how reality shows always spend like one-third of their air time repeating stuff they already told you? This book is like that.

The King of Virgin is clearly a marketing genius. Surely there's another book that does him justice.

A Good Read!.......2004-11-04

This book is a handy compilation of observations, hypotheses and speculations on the subject of Richard Branson. Author Des Dearlove freely and frankly admits his debt to several other writers who have probed the Branson story in depth and breadth. There is little if anything original to be found, aside perhaps from the author's style of presentation, which tries hard to be light and deft. Although the book carries you along, its biggest punch resides in the author's list of "10 secrets" of Branson's success. Readers who would like to know in the most general terms what Branson has done and how he has done it, and who are willing to swallow a few clichés in lieu of explanations, will seize upon this book.we think you will enjoy it and, after all, enjoying your work is one of Branson's great secrets.

Brief, unsatisfying and repetitive.......2003-07-18

I believe that Richard Branson is a unique character and that information about his life and business philosophies would make an interesting read. Thus I chose to read this book.

However I was somewhat disappointed. Although I did learn a few things and there were some interesting passages, a great deal of the book consisted of quotes obtained from OTHER biographers and journalists attempting to document Branson's life.

Each chapter concluded with a summary (read: repetition) of the information in that chapter, and dozens of other sections/quotes/anecdotes were obviously repeated in various chapters. Perhaps because of this, it only took me an hour to read the entire book (admittedly I am a reasonably fast reader).

One thing that I can say in its favor is that the book was structured well; there were 10 main sections, each devoted to a different "Branson philosophy" (for example, "pick on someone bigger than you").

In short, although I did get some interest out of this book I am looking for another Branson biography to read because this one fell short of expectations.

I suggested that we choose Virgin as a company to research as an MBA Project. Our group used this book as research material. We found it wonderful, and uplifting, exactly what what was necessary for this project. I would highly recommend it to others as well as the book "Losing My Virginity". Virgin is a company that should be studied by US business'executives, its shows you can create an empire - differently!

Chang and Kelly have done a wonderful job simplifying a very crucial process in any environment that seeks to improve its operation. The book is short and very directive. I recommend it for any organization that wants to find ways to review its operation and implement changes that will have a positive impact. People are resources and have the ability to share their ideas to make things work more efficiently. I wish more of those contemporary self-help texts would follow this book's example by reducing their 200 to 300 page text to a 104-page workbook process like Chang's and Kelly's. This is a pragmatic approach that can be used immediately by any group.

Shameless deconstructionism, but hey that can be good.......2002-04-01

Schlag's mission to point out what is wrong with the law and legal academia leaves one wondering if he isn't really a nihilist after all. He does sound at some points like he is just playing the fiddle as Rome burns. This is the frustrating half of postmodernism: the purely deconstructionist process that seems to deny the constructivist process that is inevitably to follow.

Nevertheless, this is one of my favorite books on jurisprudence, because it sharply exposes so many of the fictions that academics, lawyers and judges all engage in, often in a way that is highly entertaining. Schlag's ideas resonate in your head and give a new outlook on society generally, beyond just the law. I think about the essay on "Values" every time I hear the President talk about "the Evil One" in Afghanistan.

One interpretation of "lay down the law" is that Schlag is calling for the culture of law to admit its limitations and become more receptive to, continuous with, and even subservient to other areas of human study. Schlag's real concerns are with form and structure. I suggest as examples: psychologists and economists are presented to the courts as "expert witnesses" to serve the biased ends of litigators, rather than serving the court directly; law review articles regularly engage in normative discourse even while acknowledging that no one is listening, etc. There are areas of law that are becoming increasingly defined by economic and "therapeutic" (as opposed to legal) principles; these changes leave legal academics without much to do except cheer from the sidelines.

Of course, Schlag is getting at a lot more than that. Yet assuming that he's right about our inability to become rational autonomous individuals, why bother complaining about it? (The Tao that can be bitched about is not the true Tao, so to speak.) well, at the very least, one does come away from this book with some good ideas to play with.

Left with an empty stomach..........2001-05-21

This series of essays is probably useful to anyone wanting to get a grasp for Schlag, but the Conclusion left me wanting much more. Shlag lists a series of questions that the masses would ask, akin to "what is next in jurisprudence?" His answer is, "Maybe nothing. Maybe what comes next is that we learn to stop treating "law" as something to celebrate, expand, and worship. Maybe, we learn to lay down the law." I have no idea what that last sentence means, and it is never developed. If this is postmodernism, I feel almost compelled to live my life as liberal humanist... at least I can believe in something. He then uses the sentence question as a title for his book... I think that is a tactic he shares with punk bands that name albums after random lyrics. Schlag also throws around the terms "violence", "mysticism", and "fetishism", probably to peek the reader's interest. I'm not sure that those words are very accurate of the situation at hand, and Schlag exemplifies one of the worst traits of the acedemics he is critiquing - - he is writing not out of pure intellectual interest, but rather to gain an audience. Not a bad book, but not a great work of philosophy, either.

In chapter after chapter he tackles the most vexing problems of law and legal thinking, but at the heart of his concern is the question of normativity and the normative claims made by legal scholars. Learned readers of modern social thought and of the legal brand of postmodernism will find little new in Schlag's arguments anout the linguistic and rhetorical status of value statement, prescripions, and evaluations. But his work is distinguished by the manner in which he develops those arguments, combining analytic rigor, a learned grasp of the literature relevant to his topics, and a bracing irreverence. He reminds legal scholars of the gap between what law pretends to be and the reality of its bureaucratic presence. In so doing, he revisits legal realism, reenergizes it, and bring readers face-to-face with the central issues confronting law at the end of the 20th century

This is an ornithological bibliography for the counties of England, Wales, and Scotland and for the Isle of Man. It includes all known books, pamphlets and papers which contain substantial studies of the birds of local areas, from a county down to a back garden or a gravel pit. Each county has an introduction on its boundaries and the history of its ornithology. There has been no comprehensive national publication of this kind since Mullens, Swann and Jourdain's Geographical Bibliography in 1920. The volume also provides a detailed record of the many county and local bird reports and of the ever-increasing number of area surveys produced by statutory and voluntary bodies. The material is arranged by the pre-1974 counties and takes the record up to 1995. There are maps to show the many changes in county boundaries since 1800.

The Greatest Satire Ever Written in English.......2006-06-22

This collection of Swift's essays gives a terrific overview of his hilarious and too true writings that have withstood the test of time. From the opening lines of the first essay (Swift's Preface to 'The Battle of the Books'): "Satire is a sort of glass wherein beholders do generally discover everybody's face but their own..." to the end of the book (Swift's gravestone epitaph, translated by Yeats), every selection is thought-provoking, funny, and accessible. Highly recommended!

Biting satire.......2002-03-13

Perhaps the most famous work included is "An argument against abolishing Christianity", in which he points out the "Inconveniences" of abolishing Christianity. Why even "The Bank of East India Stock my fall at least one per cent". As a clergy, Swift wants to skewer the Enlightenment deism project of a rational religion.

Some of the other essays are more humorous, such as "A meditation upon a broomstick", and who can imagine the proposal of admiring gloves for ladies (made of baby's skin), being published today! The tale of the spider and the bee in the battle of the books, reminded me of Francis Bacon's earlier story of the spider, the ant, and the bee in the Novum Organum. Well I'd better stop now, to quote Swift "Some people take more care to hide their wisdom than their folly".

Since the first edition of this book was published in 1986 the dusky seaside sparrow whose plight was chronicled in the chapter "Vanishing Species in our own Backyard" is gone, a victim of politics and neglect. On the other hand, the black-footed ferret of America's Great Plains has recovered from the brink of extinction through captive breeding and is being reintroduced into the wild.

The Last Extinction was one of the first books on biodiversity and species loss, and today there is a new and more widespread awareness of what some consider to be the great tragedy of our time - organisms which took many thousands or even millions of years to evolve are being snuffed out permanently owing to human activity.
