Customer Reviews:
Basic Guide a Good Start for the Young Adult.......2007-08-08
Like all "Idiot" books I have read, this one has excellent organization. Technical jargon is kept to a minimum, and the conversational writing style moves along at a good pace. The level of user-friendliness makes the information instantly accessible and useful to young people who are concerned about their financial futures. The strategies are indeed suited to the age group in the title - 20s and 30s - because the strategies outlined are quite conservative. These will have limited use for people in their 40s or 50s who have suffered a devastating financial loss (such as foreclosure and bankruptcy)and are having to start over building for retirement. This book is just what it says. It provides a wealth of simple but crucial information, all for about the price of a movie ticket, with extra large popcorn and soda. Thumbs up!
So-so book. Get Suze Orman's instead........2007-08-04
I bought this book and The Money Book for the Young, Fabulous & Broke. Skip this one and get Suze Orman's book instead. Both books are for people in their 20's or 30's, but Suze Orman's book covers much more material and many more options. The Idiot's Guide tells the same old story: budget, budget, budget, and is very light on details.
Too juvenile.......2007-07-13
I found this to be ridiculously juvenile. I skipped the first ten or so chapters because it provided absolutely no information that any person over the age of ten should know. I did however find the chapters on stock and mutual funds, etc to be very helpful. Not for someone over the age of fourteen.
Great Book Excellent Transaction.......2007-01-22
This seller is fabulous and items are as promised and delivered lightning quick.
good book for young people.......2005-08-30
even if you don't have a lot of money, this book offers helpful tips on how to manage, budget, and invest.

Book Description
Polyamines have had a hard time competing for research interest. As anyone who has studied polyamines knows, it is possible to observe some sort of polyamine effect in almost any assay system at high concentrations, and their generality of action has obviously been a deterrent to intensive research. Most of the research is concentrated in the field of cancer and relatively little polyamine research is neuroscience related, although in 1926 spermine (then known as neuridinc) was first isolated from brain tissue. Further research revealed the existence of uptake and release mechanisms for brain polyamines, as seen with other substances more commonly accepted as neurotransmitters. Polyamines were also found to play a regulatory role in cellular calcium homeostasis and to have a metabolism that is deregulated in response to cerebral trauma or ischaemia, and finally to modulate the NMDA receptor. It was this last effect which tipped the balance in favour of intensive research into polyamines in the brain.
Despite their ubiquity and demonstrated links with many important physiological regulatory processes, there is no coherent hypothesis to explain their presence or role in cellular physiology. This book does not provide such a hypothesis, but attempts togroup the known effects and properties of polyamines as applied to neuroscience and to stimulate interest in this field. The polyamines are deliberately treated as neuromodulators or neurotransmitters with an important and specific function in the brain. This assumption is far from proven, but it is hoped that enough interest in this research area will be stimulated which will result in a more precise definition of polyamine function in the future.

Book Description
This much-needed book -- the most comprehensive, up-to-date text available on nuclear physics -- expertly details the numerous theoretical techniques central to the discipline. It is based on lecture notes from a three-lecture series given at CEBAF (the Continuous Electron Beam Accelerator Facility), where John Dirk Walecka was at the time Scientific Director: Graduate Quantum Mechanics, Advanced Quantum Mechanics and Field Theory, and Special Topics in Nuclear Physics. The primary goal of this text is pedagogical; providing a clear, logical, in-depth, and unifying treatment of many diverse aspects of modern nuclear theory ranging from the non-relativistic many-body problem to the standard model of the strong, electromagnetic, and weak interactions. Four key topics are emphasized: basic nuclear structure, the relativistic nuclear many-body problem, strong-coupling QCD, and electroweak interactions with nuclei. The text is designed to provide graduate students with a basic level of understanding of modern nuclear physics so that they in turn can explore the scientific frontiers. Written by an eminent authority in the field, it will be welcomed by graduate students and researchers alike.

Book Description
This book is a revised and updated version of the most comprehensive text on nuclear and subnuclear physics, first published in 1995. It maintains the original goal of providing a clear, logical, in-depth, and unifying treatment of modern nuclear theory, ranging from the nonrelativistic many-body problem to the standard model of the strong, electromagnetic, and weak interactions. In addition, new chapters on the theoretical and experimental advances made in nuclear and subnuclear physics in the past decade have been incorporated.
Four key topics are emphasized: basic nuclear structure, the relativistic nuclear many-body problem, strong-coupling QCD, and electroweak interactions with nuclei. New chapters have been added on the many-particle shell model, effective field theory, density functional theory, heavy-ion reactions and quark-gluon plasma, neutrinos, and electron scattering.
This book is designed to provide graduate students with a basic understanding of modern nuclear and hadronic physics needed to explore the frontiers of the field. Researchers will benefit from the updates on developments and the bibliography.
Customer Reviews:
Very readable discussion .......2006-08-27
There are many difficult problems in physics, but there are two that certainly stand out in the sheer amount of resources and intellectual power that have been exerted to resolve them. These are the many-body problem in condensed matter physics, and the bound-state problem in the physics of the strong interaction. In this book one will see different manifestations of both of these problems. Since an atomic nucleus is made up of protons and neutrons that interact not only electromagnetically but also via the strong interaction, one has to deal with both the many-body and the bound-state problem. The analysis of a strongly bound state between a proton and a neutron is difficult enough. To deal with a typical uranium-235 atom, that contains 92 protons and 143 neutrons is a problem of enormous difficulty.
The author has to address both of these problems in this book, along with many other issues that arise in nuclear and subnuclear physics. The experimental and theoretical techniques that are used to study nuclear systems are impressive, considering the relatively small amount of time that nuclear physics has been around. Some of these techniques are discussed in this book, and some are only mentioned but with pointers to the literature for further reading. The book of course is targeted to the physicist reader, such as a graduate student in physics or perhaps a physicist in another field who is curious about the current state of nuclear physics. The history, experimental techniques, and theoretical formalism are included in the book, and the informal writing style assists non-experts (such as this reviewer) in assimilating the contents rather quickly.
One of the hottest topics currently in nuclear physics is the existence of the quark-gluon plasma. The heavy-ion collision experiments have been conducted to try and produce this plasma, and the author spends a short chapter discussing these experiments in the book. The details of the experiments and relevant relativistic transport theory he leaves to the references. As expected, the computational schemes, such as lattice gauge theory, have been stymied in their attempts to describe the quark-gluon plasma at high baryon density. The author however devotes a chapter in the book to phase transitions in quantum chromodynamics (the gauge theory of the strong interaction) wherein he calculates a phase transition from a hadronic phase to a quark-gluon phase at both low temperature and high baryon density and at high temperature but very low baryon density. This calculation involves the conception of `nuclear matter' as consisting of two phases: a baryon-meson phase described using `quantum hadrodynamics' in relativistic mean-field theory, and a quark-gluon phase described by quantum chromodynamics in the asymptotically-free regime. Also crucial to this calculation is the property of confinement of quarks and gluons in the interior of hadrons. The author gives brief discussions of this confinement property in the book, pointing to the work done in lattice gauge theory that shows (at least with the numerical calculations that have been done) that confinement results from the nonlinear strongly interacting gluons. It will be fascinating to see whether future research and calculations support this belief of confinement, for it will shed light on the bound-state problem in quantum chromodynamics.
Indeed, the bound-state problem is one of the major unsolved problems in quantum chromodynamics (and even in "simpler" cases such as quantum electrodynamics), and readers who want detailed discussion of it will be disappointed while reading this book. There is no discussion at all for example of the Schwinger-Dyson equations or other strategies for getting a handle on this important problem. This reviewer knows of no article or book that shows explicitly the formation of a bound state in the context of quantum field theory. It seems as though quantum field theory is a technique for studying scattering events and is unable to address bound states without radical changes to its formalism. To resolve the bound-state problem will therefore be the most important advance in the history of quantum field theory.
excellent graduate text.......2005-05-26
Walecka is well known in physics circles as the co-author with Fetter of a standard text on many-particle systems. Here, he specialises to the important case of nuclear systems. The text continues the impressive depth of theoretical detail evident in that earlier book.
You can get a thorough grounding in the theoretical aspects of modelling a nucleus. The many-body treatments are sophisticated. It does mean that the text may not be the easiest to read. Not through any flaw in the writing, but due to the inherent nature of its subject. It would really help you to have prior acquaintance to Feynman diagrams. In terms of actually being able to generate these, and get numbers, like cross sections, out of them.

Book Description
Although the colonies in the West Indies were as important to the expanding British empire as those in North America, writings from the British West Indies have been conspicuously absent from anthologies of seventeenth- and eighteenth-century British literature. In this first literary anthology dedicated to the region, Thomas W. Krise gathers important but little-known descriptions, poems, narratives, satires, and essays written in and about this culturally rich and politically tempestuous region.
Caribbeana offers invaluable period commentaries on slavery, colonialism, gender relations, African and European history, natural history, agriculture, and medicine. Highlights include several of the earliest protests against slavery; a superb ode by the Cambridge-educated Afro-Jamaican poet Francis Williams; James Grainger's extended georgic poem, The Sugar Cane; Frances Seymour's poignant tale of the Englishman Inkle who sells his Indian savior-lover Yarico into slavery; and several descriptions of the West Indies during the early years of settlement.
