A Real Butterfly Bible.......2003-08-31

A friend of mine who studies moths and butterflies turned me onto this book as we were trying to distinguish between an Edwards Hairstreak and a Banded Hairstreak. The color plates are terrific and the descriptions are very clear. This is a real must have for anyone tying to identify butterflies. I have Butterflies through Binoculars and some others and those are good for quick field references but this book really has the text and detail (maps and works) that I was looking for.

Theoretical physicist and Nobel Laureate Philip Anderson has been described as one of the most imaginative of condensed matter physicists working today. His achievements have not merely constituted significant discoveries in their own right, but have also frequently set the agenda for the work of others. His pioneering contributions include the Anderson model of magnetic impurities and the concept of localisation, both of which were mentioned in his Nobel Prize citation. He also worked on the study of spin glasses, the fluctuating valence problem and superexchange. He predicted the existence of superfluidity in He-3 and provided a microscopic explanation, and was involved in the discovery of the Josephson effect. The understanding of topics as diverse as the Higgs mechanism, pulsar glitches, high Tc superconductivity, flux creep and flow in superconducting magnets and the solution of the Kondo problem has benefited from his contributions.

This volume contains a discriminating selection of the many topics on which Philip Anderson has worked. Some of the papers included are now hard to find elsewhere, and each has been embellished with commentary on how they came to be written. Anderson has also provided an entertaining introduction setting out his philosophy of what is important in science.

"In the Beginning..." is a lucid and entertaining history........1999-09-04

Hoskins' book is engaging and enjoyable for the history buff, although if your looking for a lot of politically correct pablum this book isn't for you because it deals with some subjects that aren't always understood. "In the Beginning..." is written in an easy to follow manner and covers ancient religions and characters, tying them in with the international trade cartel (ITC). Hoskins focuses on the teachings of Hinduism and how they influenced religious and international trade policies down to the present day. Overall it's an excellent and uncommon historical account.

For those who seek a greater understanding of global governance and the machinations of the International Trade Cartel, this book is a Must Read!

In it Hoskins displays a brilliant comparison to the Russia under Soviet rule and the feudal Russia of old - the names and faces were changed, but it remained the same with the near totality of the populace remaining mere serfs.

From the very start, Hoskins captivates your attention, with this opening passage:

"In the Holy Land during the Wars of the Crusades, crusaders defended a seaport being besieged by Muslims. The seige had lasted almost a year. The fighting had been violent, many had died.

Suddenly, trumpets sounded. Instantly the fighting stopped. A camel train appeared, one camel plodding along in front of the next - a long line stretching back into the distance. The Arab armies parted; the gates to the city opened, the drawbridges dropped. One after another, camel after camel - an endless chain of camels plodded into the city. Two thousand of them.

It was a smaller camel train, all that was left of 20,000 animals that had arrived at a terminal city inland and been divided into smaller trains and sent on to their final destinations. On the back of each animal rested a cargo so precious that it could have made a man rich for life - if he could but seize it. But few tried. Those who tried and failed were punished with a painful death.

Once in the city the camel drivers directed their charges through twisting, narrow streets down to the harbor. Not So Much on Retirement.......2007-09-23

This may be considered a good book if you're interested in reading the memoirs of intellectuals and former activists. I was looking for practical advice on preparation for retirement. Instead, this book is filled with a bunch of women reflecting on their yuppie, professional lives and personal histories. Most of the women drone on with self-indulgent, narcissistic drivel. There are a couple of interesting stories (like that of Ms. Carol A. Scott) and in between some of the blather there are some startling statistics and interesting facts. But overall, this book has very little sensible advice on retirement, and I feel I've wasted my money.

Exciting Transitions.......2003-06-10

I found this book very interesting. Since these women have led active professional lives, often politically active as well, their stories are really compelling. They face the issue of retirement, and its problems, with so much honesty that I was genuinely riveted by their experience. Some of them have decided to go on leading rich and exciting lives in retirement, while others have chosen to enjoy their freedom by luxuriating in relaxation. Almost all of them give absorbing accounts of their experience, and those few who don't, you can skip.

New ways to look at retirement...........2003-04-28

I enjoyed it tremendously. It gives me the sense that one's
older years are likely to be very fluid, not fixed at all, with doors opening and closing. There were certainly familiar themes, but new ones, too. This is a very thought-provoking book that would make a wonderful gift for an older woman friend or relative.

Good advice, a bit out-dated.......2007-05-16

This book discusses a variety of options for people with advanced science degrees (MS or PhD mostly) who wish to pursue a career outside of academia. It provides interviews with scientists who have successfully made the leap out of academia, either immediately after they finished their degree, or after spending some time in an academic job.

Overall, I found the book very helpful. It provided advice about how to enter specific fields and also gave general advice about how to get a nonacademic job, how to sell yourself to a potential employer, how to determine if a career is right for you, etc. The book is divided into sections based on career paths, and I read every section (even those for careers I wouldn't consider) because I found the general job-seeking advice extremely helpful. However, I encountered two main problems while reading this. First, it is almost 10 years old, so many of the trends discussed, web addresses, contact info, and program suggestions are out of date. Second, it contained no information on jobs in conservation, ecology, or the environment. These are huge areas with many possible nonacademic jobs, and the fact that they were not included is a significant oversight.

This book is a great idea, but is very skimpy with the details. The interviews consist of two questions (the same for each person) that cover general advice, but nothing specific about what the careers involve. Some fields don't need this detail (high school education is something most of us are familiar with), but if I want to learn what a policy advisor actually does every day, I'll need to look beyond the "policy" career section of this book. It was full of advice for success (improve your communication skills, do what you love), but rather short on what tasks you'd actually need to succeed at to make it in a particular career.

This book was originally loaned to me by an administrator at my graduate school. I borrowed it twice, for several months each! I finally bought the book because it is such a great reference. It gives overveiws of broad areas, such as law, business, writing and publishing, scientific journalism and education, both formal and informal. For each section, there are bios and interviews with people holding various positions within the field. And there are great tips for how to prepare yourself for the change, as well as things to expect after the leap (for example, many of these careers are a one-way change, meaning the door to research closes). However, the most valuable part of the book (and the reason I purchased it) is the contacts with trade organizations. For each area, there is a list of several organizations, listing who they are, what the mission is, what they offer and how to contact them. Bottom line, if a lifetime of benchwork and grantwriting doesn't seem like you, but this book. You might find yourself identifying with a career you never would have thought about otherwise.
