        Book Description

The Charter of Fundamental Rights of the European Union includes, in addition to the traditional 'civil and political rights', a large number of rights of an economic or social nature. This collection of essays by leading scholars in this field considers the significance of the inclusion of such rights within the EU Charter, in terms of protection of individual and collective social and economic interests within and between the EU and its Member States. What differences might it make to EU law and policy (both in terms of its substance, and in terms of the processes by which it is formed), that certain economic and social rights are proclaimed in the EU Charter?

4 out of 5 stars Natural History of Apples.......2004-09-01

This book is a natural history of apples. Its ten chapters cover the following topics: the genus Malus, the spread of the apple in North America, apple varieties, the ascendancy of mediocrity in the apple world (aka Delicious and Golden Delicious), the nightmare of standard orchard chemicals, the medical benefits of eating apples, the propagation of apples, crabapples, and apples in other parts of the world. At the end of the book are a list of apple sources, a glossary, a bibliography, and an index.

Lape's style is quite accessible for general readers. He is an apple connoisseur, and he wants others to come to share his passion. He grew up on a farm in upstate New York that had many old apple trees. This early exposure to a variety of types of apples makes him extremely dissatisfied with apples such as the Delicious, which was bred for color, bearing, and shipping qualities but has virtually no taste. He is also quite concerned with the chemicals commonly used in commercial orchards, which not only poison animals, the soil, and workers, but also leave residues on your fruit that may wind up in your food. He suggests for consumers to either grown their own trees if they have a backyard, choosing heirloom varieties for taste, or, lacking a yard, purchase local apples from small farms, which will probably taste a lot better than those horrible Delicious apples on supermarket shelves. If you must purchase your apples at a supermarket, then ask the manager to carry something more exciting than Delicious- -Macintosh apples, for example, at least have some flavor.

I found the chapter on apple propagation quite useful. I've been frustrated in my own yard at having 4 old apple trees that produce rather disappointing apples. I've tried planting some nice new trees in heirloom varieties, but the deer always eat them to the quick and they die within a season or two. But Lape's got me going now- -why not treat the established apple trees as root stock, and graft some tasty apples on them? And if I ever try planting new trees again, instead of hanging soap from the branches in an attempt to keep the deer away, I'll follow his suggestion and build a chicken wire fence around the tree, large enough to keep the deer away, but not so large as to make an insurmountable project out of the job.

I found the book to be quite illuminating. After reading the book, I feel that I understand the story of apples and their Twentieth Century downfall much more clearly. Actually, I never really liked apples all that much (probably because I only knew the Delicious variety) until I lived in Finland for a year. During the time I was in Finland, I noticed how almost every house had at least one apple tree in the yard. And when a friend finally coerced me into tasting one of the apples off a neighbor's tree, I was blown away by the flavor- -I never knew apples had any flavor at all! But this brings up one weakness of Lape's book. Towards the end of the book are 3 chapters in which Lape enumerates popular varieties of apples on other continents. These chapters read as if they are simply summaries from journal articles, and they give no reflection of personal experience on Lape's part. It would have been great for him to include information gathered through personal travel to these areas, where he could have seen (and tasted) for himself some of the apple cultures of foreign climes. He mentions that apples are grown in Hungary, but a visit to Hungary would have shown him that just about every single yard of every private house, from downtown Budapest to the tiniest mountain village in Hungary is filled with fruit trees, especially apple trees. Such fruit growing habits can probably be found throughout Eastern Europe. But the phenomenon of fruit trees in the yard is not necessarily just a reaction to communism, since we also see the trees in Finland as well, which certainly was never communist. There's a lot more to learn about apples in other countries besides just the names of the popular varieties. So in my opinion, this book is well worth reading, but it's not quite finished.

I think that this is one of the best books ever. I think you should buy this book if you like horror books. There were 2 families that moved in to the "crescent". The first family's names were Jenni, Allie, and their dad. The next family's names were April and her parents. Some really mysterious things happen to the Carpeks, the Burtons, the Joslins, and to April and her parents. So if you are ready for a really scary book buy this book. By Nick

1 out of 5 stars The Moonlight Man.......2006-12-04

I rate Moonlight Man a one because I don't think there was enough action in it.Also,I didn't like the setting."I mean a house?Whats up with that"?The characters were ok. I didn't like April. She was very bossy. The rest of the characters were ok. This is why I rated the book 1 star.

            Book Description

"Please--no apple blossoms!" protests author Robert Price, speaking of his approach to the Johnny Appleseed story. For over a quarter century Mr. Price has followed the circuitous trail of the elusive folk hero. Says the author: "Perhaps my bent for the outdoors, travel, and music shows up in this book. John Chapman's story has only recently emerged from a cloud of popular sentimentalism to become a major national myth in which 'Johnny Appleseed' is a symbol of everything good associated with the development of the land. To show this evolution, I have tied his drama not just to history and folklore, but to American topography. Most of his trail I have trampled or driven over from Leominster, Mass., to Fort Wayne."

After rural school teaching and country newspaper reporting in the Middle West, the author graduated from Denison University, took M.A. and Ph.D. degrees from Ohio State University and is now professor of English at Otterbein College.

Mr. Price has written John Chapman: A Bibliography of "Johnny Appleseed" in History, Literature and Folklore, and articles for the New England Quarterly and other magazines. The Library of Congress awarded him a grant-in-aid to complete the study for the present book.

5 out of 5 stars Great book for women ready to be in charge of their lives........1999-04-04

This book integrates the best of the traditional and macho roles for women. The how's and why's to be independent and the freedom it gives you to enjoy love and life. This book describes the various stages women go through as they grow and mature in a way that makes it easy to determine where you are. Then it describes, gives examples, and scenarios of how a women who loves more and needs less refocuses, reframes, and responds. I wondered if I made the right but tough decision to leave a relationship. The description of a poisonous situation confirmed my decision even though the situation seemed innocuous to outsiders and at times to me. A woman so touch with her life creates very positive and affirming way of living for everyone around her. It is not easy to be such a person but this is a model worth emulating.

                                      Book Description

This book is an introduction to the physical processes of cohesive sediment in the marine environment. It focuses on highly dynamic systems, such as estuaries and coastal seas. Processes on the continental shelf are also discussed and attention is given to the effects of chemistry, biology and gas.
The process descriptions are based on hydrodynamic and soil mechanic principles, which integrate at the soil-water interface. This approach is substantiated through a classification scheme of sediment occurrences in which distinction is made between cohesive and granular material. Emphasis is also placed on the important interactions between turbulent flow and cohesive sediment suspensions, and on the impact of flow-induced forces on the stability of the seabed.

An overview of literature on cohesive sediment dynamics is presented and a number of new developments are highlighted, in particular in relation to floc formation, settling and sedimentation, consolidation, bed failure and liquefaction and erosion of the bed. Moreover, it presents a summary on methods and techniques to measure the various sediment properties necessary to quantify the various parameters in the physical-mathematical model descriptions. A number of examples and case studies have been included.

                                            Book Description

This new edition strives yet again to provide readers with a working knowledge of chaos theory and dynamical systems through parallel introductory explanations in the book and interaction with carefully-selected programs supplied on the accompanying diskette. The programs enable readers, especially advanced-undergraduate students in physics, engineering, and math, to tackle relevant physical systems quickly on their PCs, without distraction from algorithmic details. For the third edition of Chaos: A Program Collection for the PC, each of the previous twelve programs is polished and rewritten in C++ (both Windows and Linux versions are included). A new program treats kicked systems, an important class of two-dimensional problems, which is introduced in Chapter 13. Each chapter follows the structure: theoretical background; numerical techniques; interaction with the program; computer experiments; real experiments and empirical evidence; reference. Interacting with the many numerical experiments have proven to help readers to become familiar with this fascinating topic and even to enjoy the experience.

Charlotte Mary Yonge was one of the most prolific writers of the nineteenth century. Though perhaps best known for her popular children's books, she also wrote adult novels. Swiftly-plotted and cleanly-wrought, Yonge's work has again gained critical attention, in part because she writes about the predicament of nineteenth-century women.

The Clever Woman of the Family is a new woman novel that focuses on a group of women in a small seaside community. It is the early 1860s and British women outnumber men to such an extent that not all women can expect to marry. Rachel Curtis, the clever woman of the title, is an opinionated young woman whose yearning for a “mission” in life leads to tragicomic results. The Broadview edition contextualizes the novel's ambivalent feminism and pro-empire sentiments with materials on some of the most pertinent debates of the time.

Rose found the wheeled chair, to which her aunt gave the preference, was engaged, and shaking her little discreet head at "the shakey chair" and "the stuffy chair," she turned pensively homeward, and was speeding down Mackarel Lane, when she was stayed by the words, "My little girl!" and the grandest and most bearded gentleman she had ever seen, demanded, "Can you tell me if Miss Williams lives here?"

3 out of 5 stars Too much like a Jane Austen rip-off..........2006-11-27

I would actually give this book 3.5 stars, but since that is not an option, three it is. That said, while I was kept interested by Yonge's narrative, I can't help but feel that she read Jane Austen's novels when she was young and then could not get away from similar plots. Clever Woman certainly parallels both Emma in the main character of Rachel Curtis, and Persuasion in the characters of the Colonel and Ermine. Therefore, while somewhat enjoyable, I feel that this book did not live up to all it wanted to be.

                                            5 out of 5 stars A satisfying read.......2005-12-17

The Clever Woman of the Family (1865)
Like Dorothea Brooke of Middlemarch, Rachel Curtis (the 'Clever Woman' of the title) longs to live a more useful and more meaningful life than that generally accorded to young ladies of her station. Like Jane Austen's Emma Woodhouse, Rachel also has an arrogant habit of believing she knows better than anyone else how the world ought to be arranged. She governs her own life foolishly, and with great presumption manipulates the lives of others; and like both Dorothea and Emma, she makes colossal blunders in the process. Her actions, however, unlike Dorothea's, hurt other people more than herself; and unlike Emma's, they result in tragedy as well as comedy. The story also offers a rather unusual and utterly lovable hero, and a Persuasion-like subplot of two lovers long kept apart by family disapproval and personal misfortune.
Like Yonge's other works, this novel has an instructional purpose and a high religious & moral tone. However, in this case I did not find these so intrusive as to interfere at all with my considerable enjoyment of the book. Needless to say, The Clever Woman of the Family is hardly a feminist manifesto - but then, it was the written and set in the Victorian era, when the mere idea that it was not only acceptable, but necessary, for a young woman like Rachel to read and think deeply (as the author quite clearly implies) was pretty radical stuff.
