People say the darnedest things. They tell you how much money they make, how well their company did in the last quarter, what it'll take to undercut their latest bid on a government project or to undermine their marketing efforts. All you have to do is ask.

John Nolan, a 22-year veteran of international espionage who is currently involved in corporate intelligence-gathering, shows you how to ask, what to ask, when to ask, and whom to ask. The methods can be as simple as deliberately making a misstatement--"The toothpaste division sure missed its projections this quarter"--and getting someone who knows better to correct you, in the process supplying you with the information you want about his company's inner workings. Or they can be as complicated as patiently and doggedly piecing together tiny scraps of information from a number of sources. Whichever you resort to, Nolan shows a conversational method for ensuring that the person dispensing the information doesn't even remember he or she gave it out. No, it's not hypnotism; it's starting and ending a conversation with generalities, and discussing specifics only in the middle, the part of a chat that most people won't recall.

Confidential could be useful to anyone who needs information about a rival, or who needs to protect his or her own company's secrets. Nolan illustrates his points with examples from business (how Johnson & Johnson gathered intelligence that protected its Tylenol franchise from a rival product) as well as fiction (Appendix A is dedicated to the techniques used by Sherlock Holmes to elicit information). The result is an entertaining book that may take your business to a more intelligent level. --Lou Schuler

Book Description

Whether you know it or not, your business competes in an environment in which many Fortune 500 companies are recruiting ex--CIA officers--specialists with training in elicitation, intelligence collection and analysis, and counterintelligence. Welcome to the era of Business Intelligence, where staying one move ahead of the competition requires uncovering their secrets and using them to your advantage.

In Confidential, John Nolan, a former federal intelligence officer and a preeminent expert in the field of Business Intelligence, reveals how your company can gather the intelligence it needs to beat the competition, while keeping your own valuable secrets under wraps. Providing the basics of Business Intelligence, including such invaluable techniques as data elicitation and sourcing as well as higher-level intelligence gathering and counterintelligence tactics for more sophisticated corporate policy makers, Confidential reveals:

How a well-planned conversation can be your most valuable information gathering tool

Who will most likely tell you what you want to know--and who is supposedly unsusceptible

How to discover the people who know what you need to know, both inside your company and outside, inside your industry, and beyond

How studying your customers and the leaders and decision-makers in their industries can enhance your competitive intelligence in significant ways

Why trade shows present an unparalleled opportunity for intelligence--what to look for, how to obtain it

Which countermeasures will ensure that neither you nor your employees become the unwitting sources of leaks

How to translate information into action that will directly affect your company's profits

Whether you're looking to find out the design and price of a competitor's upcoming product line, or uncover the dangers of entering a new market, this comprehensive, practical handbook offers effective strategies that anyone from senior-level executives to middle managers can utilize to protect themselves and outwit the competition.

5 out of 5 stars The Best Book I've Ever Read on Compretitive Intelligence.......2003-07-09

John Nolan, a 22 year veteran in the intelligence community, has written what I believe is the best book on the subject of competitive intelligence. Most books on competitive intelligence, more commonly known as CI, focus on the collection and analysis of information from online databases, the Internet, company financial reports, etc. Mr. Nolan's expertise however, is in "elicitation." Elicitation is the process of conversing with another person in a non-threatening manner and have that person unintentionally reveal information about themselves or their companies.

The most valuable parts of the book are those sections that cover the elicitation techniques - there are 17 in all according to Mr. Nolan. Readers will gain valuable insight into each of the techniques and how to use them. Mr. Nolan uses clear and concise examples to make his points.

Once the reader becomes expert at using the elicitation techniques, Mr. Nolan shows how to protect information, what to protect, how to protect it and for how long.

Mr. Nolan's book is engagingly written, and above all, useful the day one starts to read it. 'Confidential' describes ethical and legal procedures and processes that, with some practice, yield greater confidence in decisions that must be made 'ahead of the curve.'

Once I started reading this book, I couldn't put it down!

Mark Robinson, author of "Beyond Competitive Intelligence: The Practice of CounterIntelligence and Trade Secrets Protection."

5 out of 5 stars Written by (and for) an intelligence professional.......2002-04-30

John Nolan has a style that makes this niche teaching book also a great read. With just a small amount of teasing info about his background in government intelligence, he moves directly into skill recognition and honing that will allow CI professionals to expand their tool boxes. Through many case study examples he demonstrates that the techniques he has written about are those he himself has practiced and successfully used.

In addition to my appreciation for his one-liners and clever "winks" to the reader, my favorite part of the book is the full ethic/moral gray-zone discussions and examples the appendices contain.

5 out of 5 stars Right on Target !!!!!!!.......2001-09-28

Mr Nolan's jockular style of writing takes the reader through all the ins and outs of planning, gathering, and then evaluating competitive intelligence. He has been there, done that and then some and it clearly shows in his very informative tome. He introduces the reader to the intell cycle and then shows exactly how to implement it. I highly recommend this classic.

5 out of 5 stars A quick lesson in common sense.......2000-08-07

It's a bit humbling to have an author provide so much common sense in one book. Somehow it seems like I should have learned this from the lessons of life.

Nolan gives clear answers to guide businesses in the process of protecting their proprietary information. It is a must-read for those involved in this work.

The discussion of interviewing skills will be on my list to re-read once a year. It is a valuable resource.

5 out of 5 stars Techniques not just sources for competitive research.......2000-06-21

Where other books suggest sources for getting information on business competitors, Confidential also describes techniques. The author has a company which specializes in competitive research. He knows what works and what doesn't. His techniques are interesting- and legal. This is a book that all companies-at least companies planning to compete successfully-need now.

Book Description

A state-of-the-art introduction to the powerful mathematical and statistical tools used in the field of finance

The use of mathematical models and numerical techniques is a practice employed by a growing number of applied mathematicians working on applications in finance. Reflecting this development, Numerical Methods in Finance and Economics: A MATLAB®-Based Introduction, Second Edition bridges the gap between financial theory and computational practice while showing readers how to utilize MATLAB®—the powerful numerical computing environment—for financial applications.

The author provides an essential foundation in finance and numerical analysis in addition to background material for students from both engineering and economics perspectives. A wide range of topics is covered, including standard numerical analysis methods, Monte Carlo methods to simulate systems affected by significant uncertainty, and optimization methods to find an optimal set of decisions.

Among this book's most outstanding features is the integration of MATLAB®, which helps students and practitioners solve relevant problems in finance, such as portfolio management and derivatives pricing. This tutorial is useful in connecting theory with practice in the application of classical numerical methods and advanced methods, while illustrating underlying algorithmic concepts in concrete terms.

Newly featured in the Second Edition:

Numerical Methods in Finance and Economics: A MATLAB®-Based Introduction, Second Edition presents basic treatments and more specialized literature, and it also uses algebraic languages, such as AMPL©, to connect the pencil-and-paper statement of an optimization model with its solution by a software library. Offering computational practice in both financial engineering and economics fields, this book equips practitioners with the necessary techniques to measure and manage risk.

5 out of 5 stars Great book for quants.......2007-09-30

This is a great book if you want to be a quant or are interested in using mathematical methods for finance purposes. There are not many good books in this field and this one is definitely one of the few good ones out there.

However, this book is not for people with little background in math.

4 out of 5 stars Like it, just what I need.......2007-05-23

It has up to date information about finance and math background needed. I pretty much like it.

4 out of 5 stars Misssing the new stuff, still good on the old methods.......2007-04-19

The book earns 4 stars for how it combines what has been out there for some time with Matlab functionality. What one would have appreciated though is something about all the new stuff that has evolved in the last few years (e.g. credit risk, etc.)

Book Description

Balanced coverage of the methodology and theory of numerical methods in finance

Numerical Methods in Finance bridges the gap between financial theory and computational practice while helping students and practitioners exploit MATLAB for financial applications.

Paolo Brandimarte covers the basics of finance and numerical analysis and provides background material that suits the needs of students from both financial engineering and economics perspectives. Classical numerical analysis methods; optimization, including less familiar topics such as stochastic and integer programming; simulation, including low discrepancy sequences; and partial differential equations are covered in detail. Extensive illustrative examples of the application of all of these methodologies are also provided.

The text is primarily focused on MATLAB-based application, but also includes descriptions of other readily available toolboxes that are relevant to finance. Helpful appendices on the basics of MATLAB and probability theory round out this balanced coverage. Accessible for students-yet still a useful reference for practitioners-Numerical Methods in Finance offers an expert introduction to powerful tools in finance.

Download Description

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Too much introductive.......2003-04-08

Since there is few books on financial application of Matlab, I would say that Mr. Brandimarte has done a good pretty good job. I liked especially the fact that the book covers many topics (bond pricing, derivatives, optimization), however, even if the title says "an introduction", it is still too much introductive and you don't get a grip on the amazing capabilities of Matlab. This book is suitable for people discovering Matlab and Finance at the same time.

              Product Description

The recent volcanic activity at Mount St. Helens is a continuing reminder of the explosive power of our western volcanoes. Fire Mountains of the West: The Cascade and Mono Lake Volcanoes is Stephen Harris s completely revised, thoroughly researched account of the volatile history and deadly potential of volcanoes spanning the West from California to southwestern British Columbia. Fire Mountains of the West is intended for the general reader with an interest in the geologic forces that shape our western mountainscape. It begins with an introduction to volcanoes, the processes that create them, and the glaciers that sculpt them. The heart of the book is a fascinating biography of each of the major volcanoes of the West. From the subterranean lava tube caves of the Medicine Lake volcano to the fire-and-ice formation of Mount Garibaldi, from the cataclysmic collapse of Crater Lake to the incinerating blast of modern Mount St. Helens, and from deadly volcanic gas presently killing trees at Mammoth Mountain to massive mudflows waiting to burst from Mount Rainier, Stephen Harris brings to life in dynamic, crystal-clear language the geologic story behind each of the major volcanoes of the Cascade Range and Mono Lake area. Dramatic photos and illuminating maps and diagrams graphically illustrate the features of these magnificent mountains. A brief section at the end of each chapter gives directions and descriptions for those visiting the volcano. Harris also offers a careful appraisal of the prospects of each for future eruptions some of which may be more devastating to human life and property that any in the past. The book ends with a hypothetical account of a future eruption at Mount Shasta. With a rare ability to describe geologic processes in layperson s terms and elegant prose, Harris inspires in readers great respect and awe for the rugged beauty as well as the violent potential of these majestic fire mountains.

              Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Fire Mountains of the West, 3rd Edition is excellent!.......2007-06-17

Anyone interested in the history and inner workings of each of the Cascade volcanoes will find this book rewarding. Like its predecessors, the 3rd edition is well organized and clearly written. But the new edition is greatly expanded with many more (and carefully documented) technical details. The introductory chapters on volcano formation and glaciers provide a nice overview. Chapters on the individual land forms (from the 'shield' Newberry Volcano to Crater Lake and Mt. Rainier) portray a range in vulcanism. Descriptions for visitors will enhance a trip to any of the sites.

              5 out of 5 stars A fascinating geologic history.......2003-11-09

Stephen Harris' Fire Mountains Of The West provides a fascinating geologic history of the Cascade and Mono Lake volcanoes of California. One might anticipate a technical discourse involving many geological facts: think again: this title provides an unusually lively, engaging dialogue which assumes no prior scientific background. From specific hazards of volcanoes to keys to viewing inactive volcanoes, this is an important guide.

5 out of 5 stars This book is awesome........2003-08-06

Dr. Harris has provided an outstanding guide to the Cascades here. He provides wonderful detail on all the big Cascade volcanoes from Garibaldi to Lassen, and covers Mono Lake/Long Valley, a geologically unstable area that deserves far more attention, as a bonus. Especially welcome is his information on Glacier Peak and Newberry, two of the most overlooked volcanoes of the Northwest. The geological detail is mid-range; Harris explains the chemical composition of different types of lava but does not overwhelm readers with charts and graphs.

Harris sometimes crosses over into the realm of tour guide, as he provides basic instructions on how to visit and climb the Cascade volcanoes, and he provides welcome information about the prehistoric and modern histories of the mountains, including the stories about how they got their many names (the story behind Mount Adams is great). Also included is a wealth of information about glaciers and the conflict between 'fire and ice.' However, this book is primarily designed to be a lesson about the nature of the 'fire mountains,' and there Harris succeeds on every level.

If you are remotely interested in geology, like to hike or climb in the Pacific Northwest, or simply live there yourself, you ought to know the story and potential of Rainier, Hood, St. Helens, and their kin. This is especially true if you have Hood or Rainier as a neighbor! Highest possible reccomendation.

5 out of 5 stars Great book for nongeologists!.......2003-08-05

For those of us with an interest in geology, but no degree in the field, this is a well written, easy to read and understand treatment of the subject of Cascades volcanos. It was a thoroughly enjoyable adventure into the world of vulcanism. Well worth reading.

5 out of 5 stars A useful, accurate guide to a beautiful, exciting region.......2002-03-07

Stephen Harris may be one of the last non-specialist authors. He doesn't confound the reader with copious scientific jargon. Insstead he conveys his love for what may be one of the last wild regions in the United States. In addition to excellent, understandable discussions of each volcano's potential danger and past history, Harris' technique enables the reader to use his book and a simple road map to plot the reader's own choice of which delightful scenic areas to visit. We visited the Oregon and southern Washington Cascades, as well as Mount Shasta, last September, and without Harris' well-planned guidebook, we would have missed many sights, such as Mount Newberry, and would have failed to fully appreciate others, such as the Columbia Gorge.
Harris' doesn't overwhelm the reader with propaganda about environmental spoliation by logging companies, but simply lets the facts speak for themselves. The book is an absolute must for anyone planning a vacation, in whole or in part, in the Cascades or Mono Lake region.

                  Book Description

From Coherent Tunneling to Relaxation is an impressive review of ten years of progress in our understanding of interacting tunneling systems. The dielectric and elastic response of (111) off-center impurities in alkalide halides is investigated in detail and the coherent motion of an impurity pair is discussed in view of recently observed rotary echoes. The low-temperature properties of defect crystals with an impurity concentration higher than 100 ppm are reviewed and the dipolar interaction is shown to drive the cross-over to relaxational dynamics. This comprehensive presentation of the theory is illustrated by experimental data for lithium, cyanide, and hydroxyl impurities in various host crystals. This monograph is an ideal reference book for scientists working with defect crystals and glasses

                  Book Description

Reynolds Price, novelist, poet, playwright and essayist, author of the bestseller Kate Vaiden and the recent Roxanna Slade, is one of the most accomplished writers ever to come out of the South. He is an author rooted in its old life and ways; and this is his vivid, powerful memoir of his first twenty-one years growing up in North Carolina. Spanning the years from 1933 to 1954, Price accurately captures the spirit of a community recovering from the Depression, living through World War II and then facing the economic and social changes of the 1950s. In closely linked chapters focusing on individuals, Price describes with compassion and honesty the white and black men and women who shaped his youth. The cast includes his young, devoted parents; a loving aunt; his younger brother Bill; childhood friends and enemies and the teachers who fostered and encouraged his love of writing. Clear Pictures is an autobiography set apart from others by the author's clarity of vision, the power of his characters and the richness of his writing.

5 out of 5 stars if you are a lover of art, this is wonderful.......2001-11-07

OK, this is yet another great autobio by a writer that I admire: it displays a fabulous power of memory - one of the traits that Nabokov said was a sign of creativitiy - and is written in a secure and elegant style. Its portraits are sharp and unlike any that I have ever read, leavened with enormous subtlety and humor. This makes it a truly unique read.

Interestingly, not a whole lot happens in this autobio outside of personal growth, ambition, and his father overcoming alcoholism. Instead, the author muses over a rich life that started with an average family. There are deep relationships and a great deal of love, ruminations over the racism and sensitivity of his southern upbringing, and the outlines of his concerns with art. It is a bit annoying that he plays the pronoun game with those he loved: obviously, they were either men or men and women, so why not say it?

If you like a measured and calm set of vivid recollections by an individual of great literary talent, you enjoy this very much. Very very much.

Reynold's beautiful memoir contains memorable characters that many readers will find perched somewhere in their family tree. The prose pleads to be read aloud.

Reynolds Price was born in North Carolina. He has lived here his whole life, excluding four years in Europe. He is rooted in Southern ways and Southern life.
