Book Description
Shopping for a new set of wheels has never been a more serious proposition. With a proliferation of lease deals, no-haggle dealers, and car-shopping services, most consumers need practical, factual, and effective help. This fully revised and updated edition includes using the Internet to gather all the information you need to find the right car and the right deal.
Customer Reviews:
Good writer falls short on substance........1997-08-13
I bought this book hoping that the financial editor of Money Magazine would give me some real nuggets of wisdom on car leasing. Alas, this book favored me with basic information available in magazine articles -- which is probably where he gleaned his material. I would love to see a more in-depth and careful analysis of the subject

Waste of Money, Even When It Was New.......2006-12-29
The professionals in the law field in this book aren't the type of lawyer or law professional most people want to become. I understand not everyone becomes a six-figure-paid lawyer right out of law school, but this book is ridiculous. It shadows a guy who wants to only be a law clerk? Give me a break.

Book Description
Hardbound. The present advancement in the brain is characterized by the dichotomy of the molecular approaches to cellular functions in the brain and integrative approaches to the mechanisms of brain functions. This book contains the proceedings of the Uehera Foundation Symposium held in 1996 in Tokyo, which aimed to synthesize the two lines of approaches.
The major research strategy employed at the molecular and cellular levels is to pinpoint a molecule, a set of them, a microstructure which is responsible for a cellular function. That undertaken at integrative and functional levels is to comprehend the mechanisms which underlie a system function of the brain. These two strategies will be mutually beneficial, and the need to combine them in brain science will become increasingly important. This monograph, thus, helps envision the future of brain science and is of great interest to researchers, graduate and undergraduate students who want to know the cur

Book Description
What are the main challenges of computational molecular biology once the genome projects are completed? Integrative Approaches to Molecular Biology focuses on molecular biology beyond sequences: from gene regulation to differentiation, a higher-level integration that will be a major theme in biology following conclusion of the genome program. It charts the course of the emerging discipline of integrative molecular biology from macromolecular sequences to a biological (and theoretical) perspective, showing that novel integrative methodologies and paradigms are emerging at the confluence of such disciplines as computer science, logic, linguistics, and mathematics.
Following an introductory chapter by Richard Lewontin that offers a critique of the evolutionary process as one of engineering design, the first part of the book, on computational biology, addresses issues concerning protein and DNA sequences within genome projects and a federated infrastructure for databases. The second part brings together experimental, evolutionary, computational, and theoretical approaches dealing with regulation of gene expression, metabolic pathways, and cell differentiation. The book concludes with a chapter on problems and perspectives on artificial intelligence.

The geologic panorama of Texas is as wide as the state is big, sweeping from volcanic mesas and thrusting mountains in the west to the red canyons of the Panhandle, along tropical sand barriers of the Gulf Coast, and across central limestone plateaus to the hard granitic terrain of central Texas. Learn about the rocks as you come to them--what they are, when they formed, what they mean, and how they fit into the big picture of the geology of Texas.

A Trusted Guide Always.......2003-05-16
As with all the books in this series, you simply cannot go wrong. On a recent trip to central Texas, we took this guide with us and were able to follow along the drive and both visually and scientifically understand what the geology was all about. A truly great geology guide for Texas.
Excellent.......2002-05-04
This book is very easy to read and understand - even by someone who knows nothing about geology! I highly recommend it to anyone who wants to know more about the geological beauty of the beautiful state of Texas!
A must for roadcut rockhounds!.......2000-08-17
This is the best book of the Roadside Geology series. Spearing explains not just the location and character of the rock formations one encounters on TX roadways, but the processes which made them. Best of all, he specifically provides the name and formative time period of almost every formation mentioned (e.g., "Triassic Trujillo sandstone") -- avoiding the overgeneralized naming (e.g., "Mesozoic sediment layer") of a few other Roadside Geology volumes. This is certainly a time saver for the rock collector who catalogs his specimens! This book is a must-get for all rock enthusiasts -- even those who have never been to Texas. Now if someone would just write a Roadside Geology of Oklahoma volume...
The single best book on Texas geology.......2000-06-22
Excellence abounds in this book. The illustrations are good, but the writing is extraordinarily good for a book on a technical subject. I read it through like a fine novel. I've lived in Texas all my life and was surprised that there was so much Texas geology that I didn't know. A must-have for anyone interested in Texas history or geology.

If you wonder where Lorraine Hansberry's character Beneatha.......2001-05-16
Younger would go from Chicago if she did choose to marry her African boyfriend after college. Well then you've found the work you're looking for. The Dilemma of a Ghost is profoundly deep in the sense that it is based in the world of newly independent post-colonial black Africa in collision with the world of the black African-American. If you are interested in such things as ideology and culture then you could definitely enjoy the conflicting and sometimes tragically comical images of these characters' choices. The woman and the man and their in-laws make the story traditional in its setting, but the influence of white U.S. culture on the bride and the whole academic and intellectual elitism of the modern Africa juxtaposed upon the flesh of traditional Africa are bared here. And the results like the finale of A Raisin in the Sun are hardly bearable to the human desire for pleasant resolution. But all are very realistic and spawn considerable thought instead of the usual types of forgettable works that are usually praise as classics. If you are interested in the practicalities of love and real people the plot line will satisfy you desire for drama. And also you can glimpse into the mind of an early commentary on African female thought about syndrom of the African man who wants to be in a capitalist and so-called educated world and its lack of practicality in the real situation at the time. The black U.S. fantasy about back to africa fairy tale paradise and stereotypes of primitivism which are encountered by the U.S. black woman, who is white in culture according to her inlaws. Overall the content is very challenging and still thought provoking today in our examination of the on-going encounter between black and white and colonialism and indigeneous vs. capitalism.

Book Description
Playing on the phrase, "The author and you," a commonly taught reading comprehension strategy that teaches the learner how to look at the words of an author and make inferences about what is being said, this new series assists teachers and teacher-librarians in understanding the underlying purposes of the author as they prepare learning activities for their students. The series focuses primarily on books for the elementary age child (K-6) featuring insights into the author's background, purposes and goals in writing his books. By furnishing an overview of the author's works, the books in the series give teachers the big picture. This book, like the others in the series, features personal information about the author, including insights into why she writes the type of books she does, plus information about each of her featured books. Part II of this book is the author's writing workshop--writing about writing. This book features Jacqueline Briggs Martin, award winning picture book author. It discusses her life and work and the researching, writing, and illustrating of each of her books, providing insight into the writing process and promoting reading as a source of good writing. Grades k-6.

The number of books and essays which, in whole or part, devote long discussions and evaluations to the views of the Manifesto-for or against-is enough to fill this book from cover to cover in a mere listing. But this book is not one of them. It is, logically, anterior to all of them for the following reason. ...
Book Description
Only a century ago, almost all state universities held compulsory chapel services, and some required Sunday church attendance as well. In fact, state-sponsored chapel services were commonplace until the World War II era, and as late as the 1950s, it was not unusual for leading schools to refer to themselves as "Christian" institutions. Today, the once pervasive influence of religion in the intellectual and cultural life of America's preeminent colleges and universities has all but vanished. In The Soul of the American University, Marsden explores how, and why, these dramatic changes occurred. Far from a lament for a lost golden age when mainline Protestants ruled American education, The Soul of the American University offers a penetrating critique of that era, surveying the role of Protestantism in higher education from the founding of Harvard in the 1630s through the collapse of the WASP establishment in the 1960s. Marsden tells the stories of many of our pace-setting universities at defining moments in their histories, including Harvard, Yale, Princeton, the University of Michigan, Johns Hopkins, the University of California at Berkeley, and the University of Chicago. He recreates the religious feuds that accompanied Yale's transition from a flagship evangelical college to a university, and the dramatic debate over the place of religion in higher education between Harvard's President Charles Eliot and Princeton's President James McCosh. Marsden's analysis ranges from debates over Darwinism and higher critics of the Bible, to the roles of government and wealthy contributors, the impact of changing student mores, and even the religious functions of college football. He argues persuasively that the values of "liberalism" and "tolerance" that the establishment championed and used to marginalize Christian fundamentalism and Roman Catholicism eventually and perhaps inevitably led to its own disappearance from the educational milieu, as nonsectarian came to mean exclusively secular. While the largely voluntary disestablishment of religion may appear in many respects commendable, Marsden believes that it has nonetheless led to the infringement of the free exercise of religion in most of academic life. In effect, nonbelief has been established as the only valid academic perspective. In a provocative final chapter, Marsden spells out his own prescription for change, arguing that just as the academy has made room for feminist and multicultural perspectives, so should there be room once again for traditional religious viewpoints. A thoughtful blend of historical narrative and searching analysis, The Soul of the American University exemplifies what it advocates: that religious perspectives can provide a legitimate contribution to the highest level of scholarship.
Customer Reviews:
Not My God.......2006-09-24
I have read three other books by George M. Marsden. He is sympathetic to Liberal Protestantism, which he likes to call mainline. On occasion he will argue that the Fundamentalist are an obstruction to Christianity being tolerated on the college campus. My view is that Fundamentalism is Christianity. That the type of Christianity taught and argue for on many college campus is worse then atheism. This work by Marsden writes a clear picture of such philosophical faith with little grounding in the Bible as record of historic fact.
Marsden does present a picture where Christians rather have a school move away from Christianity then allow the Catholic church to have their own schools. My disagreement with the Catholic Church is large. But I think they are much closer to reality then Mainline Protestantism as depicted in this book. Page 17 tells of Henry Slove Coffin attempts to Shepherd away the American University from evangelicalism.
I like to think of it as sort of Ethics for Damnation. To use church to teach a moral structure. Instruct not about God as creator and supernatural ruler of the universe. In a manner teach God is holy, that God hates sin- but to dissuade it from condemnation. Christian Faith is matter of persuasion. The Bible is a book of philosophy and moral tales, not a source of ultimate truth. Myth, ethical stories, not the ultimate truth from God. Chapel is a place to persuade ethical moral behavior - but in reality God does not really exist. This is the Christianity Harvard and the University wanted to teach from their beginning. Marsden finds this as ideal. Leaders of many University wanted to train young men into some moral structure. Marsden laments that the university no longer tries. My feelings is if this is the purpose of mandatory chapel on the college campus - good riddance. Ethics derived by men, do not need the bible. The Bible is to be used to understand God's will. Not to keep some sort of cultural Christianity that is devoid in any belief that there is an actual supernatural being.
Religious Faith is part of the fabric of society. When one studies society, known as social studies is part of the subject manner why people behave and interact with each other in a certain manner. My question is how sociology incorporates and makes value judgements about hip- hop, rock and roll music, premarital sex television viewing, thoughts on David Hume and/or Descartes, Paul the Apostle, Moses or Jesus Christ. Compare how the teachings of Mohamed and the teachings of Jesus. The implications of religious belief is a fundamental part of studying Sociology. Herbert Spencer is critical of religious faith and made a value judgement that all faith in a supernatural being is wrong headed and ought to be dissuaded from in society. Should such an introductory book be used in a "Christian University" or a neutral public University. Should such a decision be left up to the individual professor. This was a debate in 19th century Harvard. Page 23 in this book.
Creating a platform for secular wisdom.......2003-10-01
No historical interpretation lacks an agenda. The author struggles to determine why American higher education has such strong prejudices against traditional religious viewpoints. Religion was relegated to the periphery on Enlightenment grounds. Religious viewpoints were unscientific.
The liberal Protestant establishment endorsed the scientific ideal. It was believed, inter alia, that positive cultural development advanced the Kingdom of God. There was a broad idealism, especially in the humanities. Nonsectarian moral ideals received emphasis. Campus ministries were added when it was perceived that academic life favored purely naturalistic and materialistic worldviews. Then academics ceased to believe in purely objective science.
Recently the postmodernist views presuppose naturalistic worldviews exclusively. The alternative to liberal pragmatism is postmodern relativism. Procedural rationality is still necessary. Prejudice against academic expression of religion has flown under the banner of academic freedom. Academic freedom was limited to the common good as defined by the predominantly male Anglo establishment. Control of the universities has now diversified. The book concerns pace-setting American universities with a Protestant heritage.
The American university system was built on a foundation of evangelical Protestant colleges. By the 1920's evangelical Protestantism had been effectively excluded from classrooms. Many of the same educational theories were conceived as a means of assimilating other traditions into the American heritage. The attitudes were imperialistic and exclusive.
The American Protestant leadership wanted a standardized educational system. Protestant universities, the nonsectarian ideals of the Protestant establishment, dictated that even liberal Protestantism itself should move to the periphery, virtually excluding all religious perspectives to resolve the problem of pluralism. The book tells a story of disestablishment and secularization.
Higher education was influenced by English, Scottish, and German models. William Buckley wrote GOD AND MAN AT YALE in 1951. Buckley conflated economic and religious issues. Buckley pointed to the gap between Yale's rhetoric and reality.
The Reformation brought changes in the social function of education. The scholar's gown was the garment of the Protestant clergy. Oxford and Cambridge colleges had been particularly important to the Puritan movement. Higher education was a keystone of the edifice of social authority. The sacred and secular were not sharply differentiated. It was assumed that pagan learning should be surrounded by biblical and theological subjects. Protestantism was congenial to the study of the natural order.
The founding of Yale College grew out of a concern for maintaining orthodoxy. The College of William and Mary was part of the Anglican establishment. America's primary university models in the eighteenth century were Scottish. The Scottish universities were dominated by Presbyterian Moderates.
Most American college builders were heirs to the Great Awakening. Later there was a vision of making America a land of great scholars based upon the idea of the German university. Germany had symbolic importance. The rise of the German universities coincided with the rise of German idealism. By the mid nineteenth century German trends had an impact on American Protestant theology.
At the University of Michigan Henry Tappan sought to fuse Scottish and German influences to create a great university. He required of the faculty scientific or literary qualifications. The University of California emerged from the College of California. Typically the transition from old style colleges to universities was peaceful. While essentially Protestant, the University of California was committed to a nonsectarian course. At Johns Hopkins, established in 1876, there was voluntary chapel. It was America's leading graduate university. Gilman, president of the university, saw his work as a Christian ministry.
Harvard's transition to liberal Chrisitianity had been going on since the revolutionary era. Charles Eliot of Harvard mobilized forces of professionalism and modern technique. He founded the elective system. He initiated practical reforms to implement religious ideals. He struck one observer as having Unitarianism to the nth degree. The moral purpose was to build character. Philosophers like James and Royce played a mediating role in the era of transition in cultural authority from the minister to the scientist.
At Princeton there was insistence that it be a Christian university in the traditional sense. When Woodrow Wilson was president of Princeton religious emphasis was toned down. Wilson unsuccessfully sought to reform the social life at Princeton. His plans for reform were the outgrowth of his Christian vision. Wilson was thwarted in his efforts to build a model Christian and nation-serving educational community. The issues were social as much as they were religious.
Whereas Cornell had stood for democracy and Johns Hopkins research, the University of Chicago stood for pragmatism and innovation. William Rainey Harper was a quintessential organizer. Harper's enthusiasm for popular education was fortified through his connection to the Chautauqua movement. The Chautauqua network was an extension of Methodist technique. Harper had a tendancy to conflate Christianity and democracy. The religious stance of Stanford was expressed most vividly in its architecture.
In 1906 Andrew Carnegie set up the Carnegie Foundation. It provided incentives for colleges and universities to drop their denominational ties in order to participate in a faculty pension program. An assimilationist vision of universal science and universal morality was promoted by the Religious Education Association.
By the 1920's explicitly Christian rationales for the ideals of the university would seem to be vestigial. The fatal weakness in Christian terms was the university's commitment to scientific and professional ideals. Academic expressions of Christianity seemed superfluous.
By the 1950's academic freedom had attained sacred status. The inspiration for academic freedom comes from Germany. The peculiarity of the German scene is that academic freedom was guaranteed by an autocratic state. Freedom for public speech was a guarantee rolled into the American version. In the 1890's most of the controversies over academic freedom were political.
By 1921 the YMCAs reached their numerical peak. By the end of that decade the influence of the Y's had declined markedly. American Protestant higher education trends militated against keeping theological principles part of the educational enterprise. Unfortunately, tolerance and diversity do not in and of themselves present a coherent ethical stance.
A fascinating story.......2000-05-05
I really enjoyed this book. It is very detailed, and I would occasionally get lost in all those details. But I enjoyed Marsden's story of the gradual shift from colleges and universities dominiated by Protestant church influence to college and universities that had become neutral or even hostile to expressions of religious faith. Since I have worked in and around college campuses all my life, I found myself several times saying "So that's why that is true today!" I really enjoyed Marsden's tracing of the rise of the scientific worldview as dominate in university life. I wish Marsden had treated the shift from modernism to postmodernism more, since I believe that shift began occuring in the latter part of the 1900's, well within the scope of his book. I will say that only motivated readers will finish this book--it is very detailed and long. But for those who are interested, it is worth the time spent.
Long on history, short on future university soul........1998-10-15
A favoring review in the New York Times suggested future university guidelines. Actual prognostic suggestions delayed until the last ten pages. The prehistory was anecdotally attractive, but was all old stuff.
Book Description
With a New Preface by the Author Scientists have raised questions about religious belief since the earliest development of scientific thought. Over the centuries, as science has become ever more sophisticated and answered many of the questions previously in the domain of religion, more and more people have developed a skeptical point of view regarding religion. Today, many scientists are nonbelievers with a secular, science-based perspective.
In this wide-ranging overview, physicist and acclaimed science writer Taner Edis examines the relationship between today's sciences and religious nonbelief. Beginning with a brief history of science and philosophical doubt, Edis goes on to describe those theories in contemporary science that challenge spiritual views by favoring a naturalistic conception of the world. He provides a very readable, nontechnical introduction to the leading scientific ideas that impinge upon religious belief in the areas of modern physics and cosmology, evolutionary biology, and cognitive and brain science. He also shows how science supplies naturalistic explanations for allegedly miraculous and paranormal phenomena and explains widespread belief in the supernatural. Finally, he addresses the political context of debates over science and nonbelief as well as questions about morality.
Complete with an historical chronology, an extensive annotated bibliography, and selections from primary sources, Science and Nonbelief is an indispensable and accessible reference work on the subject.

Book Description
The Chipko movement emerged in the early 1970s in the Garhwal region of the Indian Himalayas. In attempting to draw attention to the difficulty of sustaining their livelihoods in the region, local communities engaged in protests by hugging trees that were marked for felling in state-owned commercial forests. As the story of these protests spread across India and the globe, Chipko was hailed worldwide by ecologists, ecofeminists, policy makers and academics. Ironically, as the legend grew, Chipko's story became increasingly disconnected from the realities that gave rise to the protests. This book brings the Chipko movement back from the realm of myth into the world of geographical history. It reveals how the biogeography of the region has been shaped by struggles over resources and livelihoods, and illustrates how Chipko as environmental myth has added a new layer of frustrations to communities now embroiled in a struggle for regional autonomy.
