Abortion and the Politics of Motherhood (California Series on Social Choice & Political Economy)
ASIN: 019515309X |
Book Description
Shrage argues that Roe v Wade's regulatory scheme of a six-month time span for abortion on demand polarized the public and obscured alternatives with potentially broader support. She explores the origins of that scheme, then defends an alternate one--with a time span shorter than 6 months for non-therapeutic abortions--that could win broad support needed to make legal abortion services available to all women.

Life in the Chesapeake Bay
ASIN: 0801864682 |
Book Description
With its rich evolutionary record of natural systems and long history of human activity, the Chesapeake Bay provides an excellent example of how a great estuary has responded to the powerful forces of human settlement and environmental change. Discovering the Chesapeake explores all of the long-term changes the Chesapeake has undergone and uncovers the inextricable connections among land, water, and humans in this unusually delicate ecosystem.
Edited by a historian, a paleobiologist, and a geologist at the Johns Hopkins University and written for general readers, the book brings together experts in various disciplines to consider the truly complex and interesting environmental history of the Chesapeake and its watershed. Chapters explore a variety of topics, including the natural systems of the watershed and their origins; the effects of human interventions ranging from Indian slash-and-burn practices to changing farming techniques; the introduction of pathogens, both human and botanical; the consequences of the oyster's depletion; the response of bird and animal life to environmental factors introduced by humans; and the influence of the land and water on the people who settled along the Bay.
Discovering the Chesapeake, originating in two conferences sponsored by the National Science Foundation, achieves a broad historical and scientific appreciation of the various processes that shaped the Chesapeake region.
"Today's Chesapeake Bay is only some ten thousand years old. What a different world it was... when the region was the home of the ground sloth, giant beaver, dire wolf, mastodon, and other megafauna. In the next few thousand years, the ice may form again and the Bay will once more be the valley of the Susquehanna, unless, of course, human-induced changes in climate create some other currently unpredictable condition." -- from the Introduction [p. xviii]
Book Description
Our journey in search of the origin of matter - and, by extension, the origin of the Universe itself - has taken us deeper and deeper inside atoms. First to come into view was the atomic nucleus, and still further downscale the individual protons and neutrons that constitute the nucleus. At least for three decades, nucleons (protons and neutrons) were considered to be our final destination. Then, peering into them, we detected shadows of yet another layer of matter that lurks inside. Unable so far to crack open a nucleon and bring out one of these shadowy objects for observation and measurement, we can only guess what they are. We have named them quarks. We believe that two types of quarks - one named "up" and the other "down" - make up the proton and the neutron. Quarks are held together by a force dubbed the chromo force, represented by particles named gluons, which are just as unseen as quarks. So it is the quarks and gluons that lie at the bottom of all known matter!
In this important book, the major developments in atomic, nuclear, particle and quark physics over the past one hundred years are presented in a style that is both accessible to the layperson and of value to the expert. It provides a brief history of particles, charting the discovery of electrons and photons, antimatter, atomic nuclei, strong and weak forces, and quarks and gluons. In particular, it traces the concept of "conserved charges", a phenomenon that is consistently manifested in each of these milestone developments in modern physics.
Customer Reviews:
A wonderfully accessible introduction to particle physics.......2000-09-24
Moo Young Han, a professor at Duke, must be a great teacher, and this book gives everyone the chance to share in the excitement and wonder of particle physics. Han can make all those esoteric terms like quark, meson, lepton, and neutrino meaningful and interesting, which is no small feat. I finally understand how all the particles relate to each other and the larger universe, and enjoyed reading the book in the process.
an excellent view of how particle physics works.......1999-09-16
i have just finished reading Quarks and Gluons and thought it was terrific: clean, clear, focussed, tightly organized, at a perfect general reader level with a neat colloquial bite to the style, very informative for me with a lot of ahahs-that's -why- they- do- that- , clearly a labor of love by a major contributor in particle physics.
Very good explanation of particle physics.......1999-04-01
We found this book to be excellent for those people with some scientific training or interest, to learn about particle physics. It's written in such a style that people will want to keep on reading it and not put it down.
Book Description
Relations between the sexes was a pervasive concern of ancient Greek thought and literature, extending from considerations of masculine and feminine roles in domestic and political spheres to the organization of the cosmos in a pantheon of gods and goddesses. In Playing the Other Froma Zeitlin explores the diversity and complexity of these interactions through the most influential literary texts of the archaic and classical periods ranging from epic (Homer) and didactic poetry (Hesiod) to the theatrical productions of tragedy and comedy in fifth-century Athens.
Zeitlin demonstrates the indispensable workings of gender as a major factor in Greek social, religious, and cultural practices and in more abstract ideas about nature and culture, public and private, citizen and outsider, self and other, and mortal and immortal. Focusing on the prominence of female figures in these male authored texts, she enlarges our perspective on critical components of political order and civic identity by including issues of sexuality, the body, modes of male and female maturation, and speculations about parentage, kinship, and reproductive strategies. Along with considerations of genre, poetics, and theatrical mimesis, she points to the powerful mythmaking capacities of Greek culture for creating memorable paradigms and dramatic scenarios that far exceed simple notions of male and female opposition and predictable enforcement of social norms. Consisting of both new and revised essays, Playing the Other is a wide-ranging account of a central category of Greek literature by a scholar who pioneered an approach to classics through the perspective of gender.

Narrative of the First White Man s Explorations of the Interior Regions of Pennsylvania, Western New York and the Great Lakes
Never before has a book captured my imagination as this book has about the first civilized man to explore the interior regions of Pennsylvania and Western New York, as has this book by Butterfield. First published in 1898, this book traces the course of Etienne (Stephen) Brule s 17th century travels, from his arrival in North America with Champlain in 1608, to his untimely death in 1626 when he was killed and eaten by the Indians. We always talk about what life was like on the Eastern Frontier in the 18th century, now we can read what it was like to be the first white man to explore the pre-contact areas of the Eastern Frontier 150 years before the start of the French and Indian War. This book gives us one of the rare glimpses into the fascinating early pre-contact Indian history of the East. Do you know about the Erie Indian tribe (or the Cat nations as the Indians called them), formidable adversaries of the Iroquois who suddenly disappeared into history? It was Brule s restless spirit and ardent love of adventure that prompted him to request permission from Champlain to explore interior New York and Pennsylvania. No white man had preceded him into that region and the date of that particular journey was 1615 a little over eight years after the settlement of Jamestown and six years after the first white man ascended the Hudson.
Read about the tobacco farmers to the west of the Iroquois called the Neutral Nation. Learn the basis for the Iroquois hatred of the French. Sail down the Susquehanna River past the palisaded forts of the Susqhehannocks into the Chesapeake Bay country through Brule s journal in the early 1600 s and record his time here in North America until his untimely death at the hands of the Huron who killed and ate him. This is a book unlike any other you will ever read about this early 17th century time period because there are no others. I believe we need to have a sense about the pre-contact period in order to understand the roots of the French and Indian War in North America and this is the only real book to give us this understanding. The principal reason why Brule s visits to the various unexplored regions of the East have found so few historians referring to him are simply because of the lack of early information available. Butterfield simply spent the time collecting the available data and published it. Many questions we might ask about the 150 years following Brule can be answered by the knowledge we gain by reading this book. Come back with me in time as we read and rediscover the early 17th century
Beautiful hardback 216pp limited edition book (1,000 copies) with illustrations and 50+ page note appendix and index...$29.95
It all started with a dream, preserving America s 17th and 18th century Eastern Frontier history. Beginning in the fall of 1994, our first books, Indian Chiefs of Pennsylvania and Indian Wars of Pennsylvania became instant hits and today we are one the largest publisher and seller of books on 17th and 18th century Eastern Frontier History. As a small family business consisting of Ron and Kris Wenning and our son Scott, we have turned our love of early American history and our great Pennsylvania outdoors into the publishing company called Wennawoods Publishing. Book Description
The poems in
Slow Fire use original and compelling language to create experiences so real that the reader can inhabit them. This poet can delight in a "loitering" saxophone or a twelfth-century stone prayer hut, but much of her attention-her "eye" of close observation and precise language-is tuned to the natural world.
With a lifelong interest in ecology and outdoor experience from Maine to Arizona, Pamela Alexander incorporates specifics of desert and forest into her lines. Whatever the subject of the poem, from the death of a mother to marriage to real estate (James Merrill called her choice of subjects "impeccably democratic"), this is a book with an environmental consciousness and a liveliness of language that engages the reader on many levels.
Pamela Alexander is the author of three previous collections. Her first,
Navigable Waterways, a Yale Younger Poets selection, was nominated for a Pulitzer Prize. After teaching for many years at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, she joined the faculty of Oberlin College, where she is co-editor of
FIELD magazine. An avid outdoorswoman, Alexander often finds the beginnings of poems as she bikes, hikes, kayaks, and cross-country skis. She divides her time between Ohio and Ontario, Canada.

The Fire Chef.......2001-11-07
After years of cooking the standard fare on the barbeque (hot dogs, hamburgers, etc.), I wanted to learn more. This cookbook is fantastic, and I recommend it highly!
The author is a firefighter in Canada, who draws on his knowledge of Southern Barbeque, as well as some ethnic dishes he learned from his family. The beginning of the cookbook provides the basics of barbeque. The recipies are relatively simple, and the ingredients can be bought in any supermarket. Every single dish I have prepared using this cookbook has gotten rave reviews. This book can turn the weekend amateur BBQ cook into a gourmet grill chef. There are wonderful recipies for salmon, swordfish, filet mignon and chicken. If you're going to purchase one barbeque cookbook, this should be the one!

Cross currents of thoughts merege effortlessly.......1999-02-11
almost a bit too effortlessly, almost etherial. There is something cloudy about her work, maybe a bit over vague. She uses slices of eastern mysticism, down home images and an american sense of virtue and pride. Another slice is from the Rule and Exercises of Holy Dying from 1651 theology.

Unseen Danger: A Tragedy of People, Government, and the Centralia Mine Fire
ASIN: 0812212355 |
Customer Reviews:
A Great Photo Document of the Centralia Story.......2005-01-13
The photos in this book (and a radio interview in Philadelphia with the author in 1986) started me on what became a very deep interest to me-the story of Centralia. I was furtunate enough to buy a copy at that time (along with "Unseen Danger"). I just returned from 9 years on the West coast (I'm a native Philly boy)and hadn't ever heard of this town or the mine fire.
I got to see the town starting at time when the book came out--the town was starting to be gradually razed to the ground. I was a regular vistor during those and subsequent years, although not as much these days.
I think this book is excellent on many levels--as a documentation of the tragic end of a town and the dispursing of its inhabitants; as a humanistic photo essay--the people of Centralia are captured and portrayed in a compassionate manner of the best humanistic photo journalists--
A moving tribute to the people of Centralia and what was a long and painful deterioration and end of what had been their town and their home.
I hope it comes back in print for those of you who also find the place and its story so compelling.
An interesting, if hard to find item.......2004-11-30
Anyone interested in the Centralia mine fire will quickly find that the amount of published material about it is rather sparse. Most people run into Unseen Danger rather early in their hunt, which is an excellent overview work, but for those of us who hunger for more, books like Slow Burn start to creep onto the radar.
This title was published in 1986, and is almost 150 pages, approximately 1/3 to 1/2 of which are large black and white photos of the town and its residents.
While not being a scholarly book in the traditional sense, it offers several fascinating vignettes of the town as seen through the eyes of its residents and gives some insight as to the personal struggles that people had to go through when deciding to leave their homes behind and resettle (or not in some cases). As such, it can serve as a primary document for those of us interested in the historical / social side of the disaster, though given the recent nature of the events, tracking down the former residents would still be possible with a little legwork. That said, if one is looking for a primary source without actually digging out the phone book, this is a nice option.
Overall, I think the book is a worthy addition to the home library of any Centralia-phile, though the price can obviously be prohibitive at times due to the popularity of the subject and obscurity of the book.
