Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Thorough coverage of the IPO process-needs update.......1999-04-30

Looks like the effective date of the info is 1993 from a legal disclaimer in the begining of the book. For the price, this book packs a lot of good information on the IPO process. It thoroughly covers the ins and outs of IPO, SEC regulations, investment bankers, underwriting, etc. Gives a lot of good info regarding the advantages and disadvantages of going public. Lots of reference to the hot bio stocks of the late '80 (Genentech). Nice coverage of the Microsoft IPO. Good reference source for choosing underwriters, but probably needs updating. Would be great if this book could be updated to reflect the current .com IPO era.

For better or worse, most of us have at least one of the 720 million little plastic cards that are used each year to complete $860 billion worth of purchases at 15 million incredibly varied merchant locations throughout the world. This is a far cry from the humble beginnings of these myriad credit, debit, and charge cards, which just a few decades ago were generally a perk offered only to elite customers for the acquisition of fine meals, hotel rooms, department-store goods, and oil-company products. They are now so common and such an integral part of our economy, in fact, that few pay them much mind--a situation that makes David Evans and Richard Schmalensee's Paying with Plastic all the more interesting. Evans, senior vice president of National Economics Research Associates, and Schmalensee, dean of MIT's Sloan School of Management, meticulously trace the history of these cards from both the consumer and merchant perspectives in this surprisingly appealing volume, which will prove enlightening to anyone who ever wondered how plastic money works. --Howard Rothman

    Book Description

The payment card business has evolved from its inception in the 1950s as a way to handle payment for expense-account lunches (the Diners Club card) into today's complex, sprawling industry that drives trillions of dollars in transaction volume each year. Paying with Plastic is the definitive source on an industry that has revolutionized the way we borrow and spend. More than a history book, Paying with Plastic delivers an entertaining discussion of the impact of an industry that epitomizes the notion of two-sided markets: those in which two or more customer groups receive value only if all sides are actively engaged. New to this second edition, the two-sided market discussion provides useful insight into the implications of these market dynamics for cardholder rewards, merchant interchange fees, and card acceptance. The authors, both of whom have researched the industry for more than 25 years, also examine the implications of the recent antitrust cases on the industry as well as other business and technological changes -- including the massive consolidation brought about by bank mergers, the rise of the debit card, and the emergence of e-commerce -- that could alter the payment card industry dramatically in the years to come.

    4 out of 5 stars Great Overview.......2006-11-05

If you work in the payments, credit card or finance industry this book is great. It has a very easy to read history about credit cards, who knew Diners Club invented the category in the 50's. But more importantly is how the industry is moving forward and progressing.

Overall, this is a book you read if you need to, but I can't imagine anyone outside the industry reading it. You would have to be the most intellecually curious person in the world if you read this cause you were interested in how credit cards work.

    4 out of 5 stars Great book!!.......2006-01-04

I loved this book and how the author talks about the fine points of credit cards and how American consumers got hooked into it. A terrific read and it is money well spent, although FREE shipping would have been nice!

5 out of 5 stars What's old will be new again.......2005-10-24

Paying with Plastic first edition has been revamped, rewritten and repositioned here with edition number two.

Most important, Paying with Plastic "2.0" addresses new developments of online payment processing. The authors correctly begin to question the requirement of a merchant set top box for reading "antiquated magnetic stripes".

"Old is new" item #1. Frank McNamara's Diners Club platform would cost about $50,000 to set up today. What's the next mutiny of merchants?

Old is new item #2. Sears starting up Discover and getting to more merchants tha American Express -all within 2 years. Moore's law (doubling within time) would suggest the next Discover would ramp up in less time.

Old is new #3. Industries in decline, lobby best. The payment industry's recently raised interchange rates. Does technology cost more?! No, but growth is stagnant.

Old is new #4. Whoops, John Reed (ex-ceo of Citibank) pulled their Visa membership (p14) and moved the Mastercard logo to the back. Why?! Pull the entire Citi into a closed loop - Citi wanted to be like Amex and Discover. There will be more banks doing this like Chase (Octogon) or MBNA (PayPass).

Old is new #5. Wal-mart as a bank. See Sears above in #2. Wal-marts pays fees to V/MC/D/Amex but they'd rather charge fees and lend money. Why just make $2.00 on the VCR when you can make $10 on the financing. By the way, I like the payment system name, "Wallycard"... just kidding.

    5 out of 5 stars A remarkable accomplishment.......2005-07-11

It is a very difficult and ambitious task to write a book about an industry combining indispensable facts and history, fundamental business aspects and subtle economic insights. Yet this is precisely what the authors have done for credit cards, the digital quantum leap in the evolution of payment instruments. It is a very rewarding and fun read, providing the equivalent of a comprehensive 3D animated view of the organization of credit card companies (not-for-profit associations like Visa or for-profit firms like American Express) and of the complex ecosystem that surrounds them: banks, merchants, cardholders, regulators, ATM networks, etc.
And the "lens" of "multi-sided platforms" that Evans and Schmalensee use to conduct their analysis turns out to be so appealing and insightful that one wonders how economists, policy-makers, business people and even casual observers managed to make any sense of this industry before.

    5 out of 5 stars Highly Recommended!.......2005-05-09

In this history of payment cards, David S. Evans and Richard Schmalensee provide an amazingly lucid account of a couple of unusual business models: the "two-sided platform," which in the use of payment cards means walking a tightrope between the interests of merchants and consumers; and the "co-opetitive," in which the bank members of MasterCard and Visa cooperate in developing industry practices while competing for business. The authors, who are both former Visa consultants, sound like your favorite college professors - up to date and extremely sophisticated, yet friendly and anecdotal (at one point, they describe a Shell gas station near MIT to make a point about competition among cards). They typically begin chapters with easily understood notions from which they methodically build complex structures of ideas and information. Another virtue of the book is its concreteness - although that occasionally devolves into repetitiveness - starting with an explanation involving electronic signals and following the paper path of what happens when you hand your credit, debit or charge card to a cashier. The authors even consider the design and manufacture of the cards themselves. We recommend this book as essential reading for those in the banking or payment card industries; and it's not a bad idea for card users to read it - which these days means you...and just about everyone else.

Shelby Foote, who cut such a courtly figure in Ken Burns's PBS series The Civil War, is an uncommonly graceful writer as well, and this careful study of the 1863 Gettysburg campaign assumes the contours of a classical tragedy. Foote positions readers on the field of battle itself, among swirling smoke and clattering grapeshot, and invites us to feel for ourselves its hellishness: "men on both sides were hollering as they milled about and fired, some cursing, others praying ... not a commingling of shouts and yells but rather like a vast mournful roar." Foote's fine book is history as literature, and a welcome addition to any Civil War buff's library.

5 out of 5 stars As Good as it gets.......2007-06-27

I could write a long review about how good this book is but that would be a diservice to the author. We lost a great historian when Shelby Foote passed. He was a historian who prefered to be remembered as a novelist. As a proud Vermont Yankee, professional historian, and living historian of that period, I tend to get cranky about revisionist views or the whole Sourthern "lost cause" foolishness. However, Mr. Foote, a proud southerner, wrote about the most important event in our nation's history without the prejudice or regionalism, so many bring to the topic. He could write excellent history and tell the story with the readability of a novelist.

We are poorer for his passing but the body of work he left behind on the Civil War will remain some of the must have items in any serious collection of books about that second birth of our nation.

We'll miss you Shelby but thank you for what you left behind.

5 out of 5 stars "They will attack you in the morning and they will come booming--skirmishers three-deep. You will have to fight like the devil.".......2006-07-04

Heth upon hearing a rumour that Early's men had over looked a suppy of shoes (many of his men were barefooted) when they passed though Gettysburg the week Sent his lead brigade under Johnston Pettigrew to investigate. Johnston Pettigrew returned on thr 30th of June, mindeful of Lee's warning not to bring on a battle till the whole army was at hand, prudently withdrew when he encountered Federal troopers along a creekbank west of town.
Heth still wanted those shoes so he took Pettigrew with him to repeat what he had seen to Hill. Hill responded "The only force at Gettysburg is calvalry, probably a detachment of oberservation. Mead's infantry are still down in Maryland and have not struck their tents." Heth was quick to reply "If there is no objection, I will take my division tommorrow and go to Gettysburg and get those shoes." "None in the world" said Hill.

Thus what started out as a movement for shoes ended in prehaps the most important battle of the War!

Sheby Foote is a master story teller who turns history in to classical literature. He includes many maps to help understand the grand movement of both armies.

Standing in the way of Heth's men to'get those shoes' was John Buford, a tough, Kentucky-born regular with a fondness for hard fighting. Though Hill was correct that at the moment there were only cavalry in Gettysburg, these troops (two brigades) were armed with the new seven shot Spencer carbine. They belong to Reynold's Corps who's infantry were that night camped just six miles from Gettysburg.

What would you do to 'get those shoes'?

*The title is from John Buford addressing his troops on 30 June 1863. "....You will have to fight like the devil until supports arrive."

Imagine, if you can, a book written by a modern historian that actually seeks the truth. Imagine a book written by a modern historian that is not slanted to promote his/her politics. Imagine a 20th century historian that does not even mention the sexuality (alternative or otherwise), of any historical figures in an entire book.
If you are looking for "the truth" at Gettysburg, "Stars In Their Courses" is for you. Shelby Foote is a fine author, and has written the book in a captivating manner that I highly esteem. Pick this book up and give it a try, one chapter should do the trick. You will have a good feeling afterward that you have learned something worthwhile about American History.

5 out of 5 stars The Tragedy of Gettysburg.......2006-01-22

"Stars in Their Courses" is a superb narrative account of the Battle of Gettysburg, excerpted from Foote's three volume history of the Civil War. Shelby Foote, a novelist and a son of the South before becoming an historian, approaches the Gettysburg Campaign as a tragic human drama, the high tide of Confederate arms for General Robert E. Lee's Army of Northern Virginia and the turning point of redemption for General George Meade's Army of the Potomac.

Foote's account of Gettysburg is absolutely gripping, full of the human details that make those events come alive for the student of the Civil War and the casual reader alike. Foote captures both the heroism of individuals and the sometimes blind blundering of large armies. Gettysburg is not Lee's finest hour; Foote's narrative may be fairly read to show that Lee's normally sure hand was absent over the three days of battle, allowing the Army of Northern Virginia to stumble into an unexpected battle. Lee's desire for a decisive victory and his underestimation of the long-suffering Army of the Potomac probably led him to persist in a clumsy and costly fight his army could not afford.

On the Union side, General Meade seems more driven than a driver of events, but his willingness to fight it out made possible the victory that his various valiant subordinates delivered. Meade's failure to vigorously follow up in the days after the battle probably cost the Union a chance to do much more damage to Lee's Army.

This book is highly recommended to the student of the Civil War and to the casual reader looking for a highly readable account of this critical battle.

5 out of 5 stars Superb Account of the Gettysburg Campaign.......2005-02-06

Shelby Foote's monumental, three volume history of the American Civil War is widely recognized as one of the great works of the twentieth century. However, its great length - roughly three thousand pages - is undoubtedly intimidating to many readers. Fortunately, this 1994 Modern Library edition, Stars in Their Courses, the Gettysburg Campaign, circumvents this difficulty.

Stars in Their Courses is the middle chapter in the middle volume of Shelby Foote's remarkable history. This extract offers an easy way for a reader new to Shelby Foote to become acquainted with his masterpiece.

The editors of the Modern Library series should be commended for selecting this particular chapter. It is hard to imagine a better introduction to the Gettysburg Campaign. Stars in Their Courses is not only great history, it is great literature. Shelby Foote is an outstanding writer, one that happens, fortunately for us, to write history. In reviewing Foote's acclaimed historical narrative, one critic said, "It seems to me unlikely that it ever will be superseded."

Remarkably, Stars in Their Courses is entirely self-contained. A reader not familiar with Shelby Foote's writing would not realize that this Modern Library edition was actually a single chapter drawn from a much larger work. The reader has no need to reference any other sources.

Stars in Their Courses would make an excellent gift for that friend or family member that enjoys good literature, but heretofore has not developed an enthusiasm for the Civil War. The Modern Library edition is attractively bound, and printed on acid-free paper.

Michael Shaara's Pulitzer Prize winning novel, The Killer Angels, would be a great companion gift to Stars in Their Courses. Shaara's focus is on specific participants in the three-day battle, especially Lee, Buford, Longstreet, Chamberlain, and Armistead. The Killer Angels was the basis for the epic movie, Gettysburg.

                              Book Description

When author and historian Miranda Lewis accepts an invitation from her old college roommate and her roommate's father, a handsome, courtly Virginian, to attend the reenactment of the Gettysburg Battle over the Fourth of July weekend, she hopes to recapture the magic of the long-ago summer she spent with them. But the jaunt down memory lane turns into a nightmare when her roommate's estranged husband, Wiley, a hardcore Confederate reenactor, is shot in the leg and dies of a heart attack while reenacting Pickett's Charge. Wiley's death begins to look suspicious when a large amount of money is found on the shooter, a fellow reenactor, after he flees the scene on his motorcycle and is mowed down by a truck. Also, the victim had no known history of heart trouble. Concerned for her grieving friend, who blames herself for her husband's death, Miranda sets out to discover the truth. As she plunges into the strange and sometimes scary world of Civil War reenactors, she uncovers a string of betrayals that have resulted in mayhem and ultimately murder. The revelations force Miranda to shed certain cherished illusions about people and events of both the past and the present, and to risk her own life to uncover a cunning killer.

Leslie Wheeler, a descendant of Union general George B. McClellan and a self-confessed Civil War buff, is the author of a previous mystery, Murder at Plimoth Plantation. She lives in Cambridge, Massachusetts with her husband, son, and cat.

Her roommate as an undergraduate at Stanford Ginny Longford Cross and her father Virginian Randall Longford invites Boston historian Miranda Lewis as their guest at a Gettysburg reenactment. Ginny's estranged husband, Wiley, a die hard reenactor who believes in 100 percent authenticity and willing to look war torn gaunt, will play a Confederate soldier at the event.

At the gala, Wiley is accidentally shot and soon after dies of cardiac arrest, which is surprising since he had no heart trouble. While Ginny grieves her loss, Miranda makes inquiries among the Civil War participants after learning that the person who shot Wiley is also dead following a motorcycle-truck incident. As Miranda digs deep into what is going on at the reenactment, she is jeopardy of being the next victim of the Civil War though it is a hundred and forty years since Appomattox.

Though the homicide occurs towards the middle of the book, readers will enjoy how MURDER AT GETTYSBURG provides insight as to what happens behind the scenes at a reenactment. The first half of plot also sets the tone on relationships between the key players. Once fans adjust to Miranda investigating a potential murder (a difficult issue of acceptance with most of the sub-genre tales), the entertaining amateur sleuth story line grips the audience until the heroine risks her life confronting the killer.
