Island of Excellence is an insightful book that explains corporate culture in a truly insightful way. Mark Bodnarczuk breaks the mold of corporate literature with this unique novel. While Island of Excellence succinctly explains corporate culture and ways to tap into its creative power, it also speaks to the individual. It has helped me greatly in my personal, as well as professional life. The lessons I've learned have helped me form a new understanding about my relationships at work along with a better understanding of how I fit into the culture of my workplace. The author, Mark Bodnarczuk, combines the solitude of scuba diving the spectacular reefs of Papua New Guinea to explore the corporate and personal lives of nine characters attending a life altering dive workshop. This "Teaching Novel" has provided me insight on how to set free the creative thinking within our organization and allow individuals to find meaning and significance in their work. An eye-opening book that I highly recommend!

Using Fictional Characters relating to Jungian and Enneagram models, Mark Bodnarczuk, takes the reader on a journey exploring the inner self. In a unique approach to the "Corporate Book" Mark invites the reader to identify with one of the characters and discover their own internal conflicts that prevent them from fully experiencing their potential for excellence and success. Mark's book takes us a step beyond just identifying leadership traits and obstacles, to recognizing, understanding, and overcoming those obstacles to unleash our full potential. I am on my third read of Mark's book and discover new insights each time. His principles have helped me achieve greater success not only as a CEO, but also in my personal life.

A great business book that reads like a novel.......2005-01-01

This book was one of the best books I've read in recent memory. The writer, Mark Bodnarczuk, uniquely used fictional characters to make a very complex subject enjoyable to read and easy to retain. His insights into how personalities affect work performance and teamwork were especially helpful. I've applied his principles in my organization and found them to improve teammwork, employee morale and organizational productivity. I would recommend this book to anyone who desires an understanding of human personalities, how people's personalities impact teamwork and how understanding personalities improves business performance.

Sedimentary facies in the subsurface are usually interpreted from a depositional/stratigraphical perspective: the depositional layering is generally considered to remain undisturbed, except in a few settings. But, there is growing evidence that subsurface sediment mobilization (SSM) is more widespread than previously thought, as new observations arise from the ever-increasing resolution of subsurface data. Many examples are from hydrocarbon provinces but studies elsewhere, for example in preparation for the underground storage of hazardous waste, have yielded unexpected examples. Although until now the different aspects of SSM, including soft sediment deformations, sand injections, shale diapirs, mud volcanoes, etc, have been separated, the new discoveries emphasize their inter-connection, regardless of scale, depth, location, grain size or trigger mechanism. This volume integrates the different aspects of sediment mobilization in the subsurface and their structural consequences, allowing a more general and a more coherent view of the subject.

If Garry Winogrand photographed everything, all the time, as he is famous for having done, his pictures of airports convey, despite their dated hair styles and clothing, the many still very familiar sights and spaces and sensations attached to air travel. Arriving at an airport, checking baggage, watching other travelers amble, walk, and sometimes rush by, luggage trailing and flailing and neatly rolling along, passengers waiting forever on those long rows of attached seats, friends and relatives greeting each other and saying goodbye: everything that happened and stills happens in these vast public spaces. Winogrand's airport photographs were taken over a period of 25 years, with the first frame shot around 1958 and the last in 1983, just months before his death. In Winogrand's archive at the Center for Creative Photography at the University of Arizona in Tucson, there are hundreds of contact sheets containing airport images, and over 1,100 prints of airplanes and airports that Winogrand made during his lifetime. Edited by Alex Harris, one of the first to publish selections from this body of work, in DoubleTake magazine in 1996, and longtime friend and colleague Lee Friedlander, The Airport Pictures of Garry Winogrand assembles 86 of the photographer's most compelling, never-before published images of travelers, flight attendants, airport waiting rooms, airplanes on runways, and all the people and places in between.

Interesting Collection of the Comings and Goings of People.......2004-09-12

It's just wonderful to see the comings and goings of ordinary people candidly portrayed by a photographer as skilled as Garry Winogrand. The photograghs date from the 1950s to the 1980s with most from the 1970s and 1980s. My how airports and styles have changed. Most of the photograghs are of people in U.S. airports but you'll also see Paris and Marseilles. Among U.S. airports, the majority are from NYC but also Salt Lake City, San Francisco and Los Angeles among others. One of my favorite photographs is of a business man in suit and an old style business hat speaking with obvious pleasure on a pay phone (remember pay phones?). Winogrand also seems to favor attractive women -- whose beauty seems to transcend the fashion of the times. The images of people standing in line are also interesting. Some things never change.

The reproduction quality is very good. Highly recommended.

Eric Newby got the travel bug from his parents, who would leave him with a housekeeper for months at a time when they went off to market their fashion "productions." But he took the habit farther afield and for far longer than anyone could have imagined, and in the process developed an audience devoted to his witty travel tales. Now in his 80s, the venerable English travel writer still pedals a cycle or bounces across a desert on a jeep whenever the opportunity presents itself, for, as he notes, it might well not recur. In this selection of short pieces, Newby focuses on his most enduring memories of departures and arrivals, beginning with his regular walks "up to the bend and back" with his mother in his childhood village of Barnes, England. With abundant detail and his trademark self-deprecating humor, he takes his readers on one of the last journeys of the Orient Express, into the world's biggest opal field in South Australia (where miners live in the "unimaginable horror of corrugated iron huts" in 140° temperatures), and on to Tuscany for the mad two-minute horse race known as the Palio where horses and riders are regularly maimed or killed. In his 70th year alone, Newby cycled from Rotterdam to Dijon, traveled to northern Rajasthan for the full moon of Kartik, when tens of thousands of Hindus try to bathe in the sacred lake at the same time, and then to the biggest cattle fair in all of Asia, where he describes in delightful detail the twice-daily bathing of the elephants. Two years later he decided to ride his bike along the meridian two degrees west of Greenwich in bleak November weather because it was the only time of year he could stay at bed & breakfasts without advance reservations.

The short essays cover lots of territory at a rapid pace and, as a result, are not as satisfying as his classics, such as A Short Walk in the Hindu Kush and Love and War in the Apennines. But he makes up for the lack of length and depth with a brilliant selection of telling scenes and the amused irony with which he views the world and himself. During a visit to China, he irreverently describes the embalmed Chairman Mao this way: "Lying there, with only his face visible, he looked like an over-sized omelet from the McDonald's across the way at the south-west corner of Tiananmen Square." As for himself, he's busy being overtaken on his made-to-order touring bicycle by elderly Dutch ladies "mounted on bikes that looked like two harps welded together." With his ironic and endearing sense of humor and his willingness to go absolutely anywhere, Newby makes the perfect traveling companion. --Lesley Reed

I was saddened when I finished the book; I wanted to remain in touch with the town and its citizens and visitors. It was all I look for in fiction; laughter, tears, sadness and joy, in short, life as most of us live it.
