Book Description
A fascinating insight into how Toyota conceived, developed and launched its own luxury car brand - Lexus. This remarkable success story will explain how the Japanese giant went from zero to 25hare of the luxury car market in the space of only ten years.
Customer Reviews:
Insightful !.......2005-02-24
This is a great manufacturing love story in which Toyota, an automaker clearly in love with its product, decides to go after the U.S. luxury car buyer, a suitor who has repeatedly ignored its advances. To get America's attention, Toyota must first re-invent itself. It must make itself more handsome (through better styling), improve its physique (be faster, stronger and need less maintenance) and prove its financial management skill (by selling great cars for less). Because time is fleeting and the buyer has many other suitors (Mercedes Benz, Jaguar, Nissan, Volvo), Toyota must work fast before its intended lover makes an irrevocable decision and buys someone else's car. Like some other love stories, this is repetitive and suffers from some plain old sloppy editing. But it makes you want to test-drive a Lexus to see what causes such a sensation. We recommend this book to CEOs and sales and marketing executives who dream of producing revolutionary, successful products for the global marketplace. And who would mind getting a little consumer love?

A Solid Effort!.......2004-05-20
The good news is that this tome provides tremendous detail about its subject matter, retail banking in Europe. The bad news is that you have to really want to know a lot about this specific subject to penetrate its lack of organization and awkward writing style. The information is abundant, particularly about the past, although the book doesn't include insight about the future. European banking is full of threats, opportunities, reversals and challenges. It is subject to revolutionary reshaping by major political and economic events. Popular books don't tend to get written about such esoteric subjects unless they are post-mortems on disasters. Given that, we think this academic if thorough entry may be indispensable to people with a real need to know about the subject.

Book Description
Many people know more about the planets Venus and Mars than they do about our home planet, Earth. Unique in our solar system, and so far as we know in the Universe itself, the Earth has been evolving for the past five billion years, and is the result of the dynamic interplay of astronomical, physical, and chemical forces ranging from the vast to the barely perceptible. The evolution of the earth has never been predictable. Life has come very close to being extinguished many times. After each such crisis, the survivors and their genes have diversified and grown in number to exploit all opportunities. Without such traumas it is hardly likely that evolution's pace could have reached its present advanced level; that of conscious life capable of changing the world, contemplating it, and in doing so changing itself at geologically stupendous rates. In Stepping Stones, Stephen Drury explores how such a seemingly fragile world could have been formed and developed. Looking at the astonishing leaps, and near catastrophes that have occurred along the way, intermingled with inexorable but slow change, the book interweaves the evidence from geology, physics, biology, and chemistry, to tell an extraordinary story of the earth's evolution spanning nearly 5 billion years.
Customer Reviews:
Fascinating Book.......2002-06-22
This is one of the best books out of the hundreds I've read on astronomy, earth science and biology. This is the rare book that weaves together these disciplines. If you read one book on how our planet got to where it is, and where it's going, this is the one.
Wonderful Exposition!! As Gripping as a Good Novel........2001-09-02
Dr. Drury has produced a much needed lay-person's exposition of Earth science - Bravo! To paraphrase his words, this book provides the complete story which is sketched out in several contemporary works dealing with life sciences and origins.
On the down-side, the reader is forced to read the authors' (short but frequent) political commentary peppered throughout the work. Marx, Engels, Lenin and other economic/political writers are quoted throughout. In most cases, the quotes are forced and read as though they were inserted in spite of the otherwise wonderful text.
Can I be a geologist, please!.......2000-03-05
For years I have been interested in geology and the evolution of life, but have rarely found any general book aimed at the non-specialist. Stepping Stones breaks completely from the single-topic approach and takes on probably the broadest scope of any book I have read - the entire evolution of our home planet, the life upon it and our own emergence from a history of quiet change interspersed with unimaginably violent events over almost 5 billion years. It links geology through physics, chemistry and biology to astronomical factors. Forget the Whole Earth Cookbook; Stepping Stones tells our story. Like all good reads, it contains a sting in the tail and blends fact, theory, speculation and some wry humour. I can't say that it is an easy read, but truly found it hard to put down. What I particularly like about it is the way that the author has divided the text into more than 20 chapters, each of which is almost self-contained and possible to read in an evening. I don't know how he did it, but the huge amount of content links together wonderfully. My favourite passage - where he jokingly links our irritating cough reflex to the survivors of a volcanic holocaust 25 million years ago when the atmosphere was thick with noxious fumes, and 90 percent of all life perished. Every living thing today descends from those survivors, and I laughed to think we may owe our being to the plague of concert halls. What I learned most - how humans evolved through a repeated sequence of huge climate and environmental shifts, which helped hone our ancestors survival skills, and generally how evolution is as much a product of outlandish chance as it is of slow change governed by genes pitted against surroundings. If I were younger, I would enroll for a geology course, and would feel confident that I could master any specialist detail thrown at me, now that I have grasped the fullest possible context from Stepping Stones!
Life returns to geology!.......2000-03-05
Drury has done for geology and the evolution of Earth and life what Carl Sagan did for the cosmos. In Stepping Stones you can see how chemistry, physics and biology combine with the evidence from rocks, and begin to understand the highly complex and extremely long past from which our own evolution has sprung. Heady stuff, but surprisingly easy to read.
Excellent, thoughtprovoking, but slow.......2000-02-14
I just finished it. It was a really great book. It is somewhat technical, as of course is must be, without going over the top.
But not being trained in neither geology, chemistry or biology it was slow work on my part. 5-10 pages max. per sitting. Too much info to digest.
But well worth the effort.

What can you say about nothing? Paradoxically, it turns out we know quite a lot about emptiness, and physicist Henning Genz fills us in with Nothingness: The Science of Empty Space, a heady and delightful romp through the cold void of space. From Aristotle's horror vacui to modern quantum-mechanical confirmation that nature does indeed abhor a vacuum, Genz rockets us through the inky blackness with clarity and playfulness. The concept of the absolute void is one of the few that touches both the farthest reaches of philosophy and the most intimate corners of experimental physics, and the push and pull between these two fields has never been more plain. Torricelli's demonstration of the vacuum in Renaissance times turned his world inside out; it took hundreds of years for scientists to conclude that the seeming emptiness actually froths with "virtual particles" and the just barely real Higgs field. The stories are uniformly engrossing and enlightening, and while the science can get a bit abstruse from time to time, the narrative thread runs independently of the hard stuff. If you want the dirt on the most ephemeral of scientific subjects, look to Genz; he's done the impossible and created something out of Nothingness. --Rob Lightner
Book Description
"I don't know of a better introduction to the basics of physics and cosmology."- Sterne und Weltraum (Stars and Space).
Nothingness addresses one of the most puzzling problems of physics and philosophy: Does empty space have an existence independent of the matter within it? Is "empty space" really empty, or is it an ocean seething with the creation and destruction of virtual matter? With crystal-clear prose and more than 100 cleverly rendered illustrations, physicist Henning Genz takes the reader from the metaphysical speculations of the ancient Greek philosophers, through the theories of Newton and the early experiments of his contemporaries, right up to the current theories of quantum physics and cosmology to give us the story of one of the most fundamental and puzzling areas of modern physics and philosophy.
Customer Reviews:
This is not written for dummies.......2007-04-18
Although touted as a book written for non-science professionals as a primer to the concepts of empty space, the books did not deliver as promised.
Four aborted attempts to read the book left me disappointed. The author set my expectations in the book cover to believe that this book would make the subject matter absorbable and stimulating. I found it extremely technical from page 1 and undigestible.
I have some graduate physics and math background (not much) but I couldn't follow anything in chapter 1. After the third failed attempt to ignite my interest in the book, I jumped forward a few chapters to see if it lightened up any. No joy.
Sorry, I'm sure the book has a lot of interesting and compelling information, but I think it's written way over the head of me and, I presume, most readers.
BOTTOM LINE:
If you are a scientist, physicist, or graduate/doctorate level student in these fields, go for it. You'll probably love the book. If you aren't any of the above, I'd skip it for other books like Surfing Through Hyperspace, or some Steven Hawkings, or even Einstein's Special Theory of Relativity, all of which were easier reads!
hello reviewer, check the dates of publication.......2006-06-28
One reviewer states this is a rehash of "The Book Of Nothing" by John Barrow.
Hello! The Genz book was written several years prior to the Barrow text.

THE UNCERTAINTY OF NOTHINGNESS.......2004-03-23
Genz tries to put empty space into a few words [9 Chapters] but ends the book on P. 312 with "the epilogue of this book may serve as the prologue for physics of the future." In a word he ends where he begins-lost in space.
Try to put one of his statements in context: "The fluctuations of zero point energy are real and measurable [Casimir effect], even if the zero-point energy itself is not." Whether space can be empty, he asserts, depends on orientation. As though one had two pairs of glasses with which to view the question. On P. 202 he writes, "Since we do not yet have a theory that unifies general relativity and quantum mechanics, anything we might say about fluctuations of the fields of general relativity must remain mere speculation."
Genz relishes the idea that Aristotle flatly denied the existence of empty space. He uses modern speculations to agree with Mr. A's s thesis, speculations of Heisenberg's uncertainty relation and speculations about the vacuum fluctuations of zero point energy. Like a politician flipping flapjacks he tosses both something and nothing into the air but nothing comes down. Yes, the smaller the space the higher the velocity and more random the energy movement but what became of those elusive eleven dimensions that string theory promised us?
vacuous treatment of the "vacuum".......2003-06-08
A disappointing read; Tries to construct the whole treatment from various pespectives; historical and scientific.. However, the book falls short of any serious merits that would make this recommended reading. Possibly intersting for the uninitiated? The book holds a lot of unrealized potential in the treatment of this subject so full of possibilities.
Fascinating!.......2003-03-19
Shows that the boundaries between science, religion, and philosophy have always been arbitrary and meaningless. The discussion of the Casimir effect - the finding that the vacuum exerts pressure - is mind blowing. Those who are familiar with Zen will be struck by the parodoxical finding that nothing is not nothing at all, just as Zen tradition maintains. Very perplexing.

Book Description
A brain-teasing, brain-pleasing look at the often-hidden mechanisms of innovation. From Archimedes' discovery of the principle of water displacement while taking a bath to Einstein's Theory of Relativity, from Brunelleschi's development of perspective drawing to the Impressionist revolution, from the taming of fire to the creation of the laser, "breakthrough thinking"--that is, a sudden, seemingly unaccountable moment of inspiration--has shaped and advanced civilization. But Nature invents, too--through evolutionary watersheds like vertebrate mammals and formerly grounded creatures making the leap to flight. How, then, does breakthrough thinking really work? What, if anything, does human invention have in common with biological evolution? In this sly tour de force of deep analysis and practical exercises, David Perkins explores the common logic behind breakthroughs across many fields, historical periods, and evolutionary epochs. Drawing on a rich knowledge of artificial intelligence and cognitive psychology, Perkins offers a uniquely integrative theory of how breakthroughs occur, along with dozens of delightful mind puzzles and illustrations that will have you quizzing whoever happens to be nearest.
Customer Reviews:
Understanding Sudden Insight.......2006-01-21
Inventors differ from the average person because they practice an art and logic that enables them to make breakthroughs in solving problems which ordinary reason and common sense fail to solve. This author selected as a prime example of such insightful thinking the oft told story of how Archimedes, some 2200 years ago, determined if the king's crown was made of pure gold. As you may recall from elementary school, as Archimedes lowered himself into his bathtub, the water rose and an insightful thought occurred to him. He realized the volume of the irregularly shaped crown could be determined by how much water it would displace and with knowing the density of pure gold he could establish what the crown should weigh for its volume.
The book is devoted to answering the question of how breakthrough thinking works. Many examples of such thinking are given and analyzed. The author notes five stages or steps that many breakthroughs seem to follow: "Long search, little apparent progress, precipitating event, cognitive snap, and transformation". He cites Leonardo's helicopter and the Wright brothers as examples.
He offers Edison's search for a practical light bulb filament as an example of the long search process. He notes that Edison called his systematic scanning process "draghunt".
The author uses the Great Klondike Gold Rush of 1897-1899 to illustrate four basics that underlie breakthrough thinking. He calls these the "wilderness of possibilities, the clueless plateau, the narrow canyon of exploration, and the oasis of false promise. He applies these four "Klondike logic" elements to many examples of problems requiring breakthrough solutions. He suggests how detecting clues, reframing, and decentering can put an end to going in circles.
To avoid being dry and abstract, the book contains many simple puzzles that illustrate how these analogies and techniques can be applied. Some will amuse you and some may infuriate you. We, as humans, tend to look only for the reasonable solution and miss the "unreasonable".
The book also looks at several of the familiar idea producing and creative problem solving techniques such as brainstorming and techniques not as not as well known such as bisociation, Synectics, and the triarchic theory of intelligence. He examines both their positive and negative aspects.
The author compares how mother nature has solved problems with human solutions. For example, how by evolution the insects and birds have achieved flight.
Much effort, through the years, has been devoted to trying to understand how insightful thinking takes place and how it might be acquired. For example, in 1927, a German psychologist studied the familiar observation that we remember unsolved problems better than we remember solved problems (Zeigarnik effect). Why do impasses seem to circulate in our memory banks and can we utilize this trait better?
The author calls attention to the fact that "knowing too much for your own good" can be a villain in problem solving. A mental set may prevent trying different approaches.
In fairness, the author also examines the point of view that some scientists hold that sudden discovery is really a myth and that sequential reasoning is the proper technique. The author concludes "...the cognitive snap is alive and well in the world of science, as in other worlds". Archimedes'Bathtub.
Puzzle lovers will be delighted to see the classic nine dot problem has two solutions whereby one straight line can connect all nine dots instead of the usual four straight lines solution!
The author has a Ph.D. in mathematics and artificial intelligence, yet his book can be read by a high school student. This book will be a real delight to anyone who has ever tackled difficult and "unreasonable" problems. It can be read as recreation or as a serious approach to understanding the mysterious phenomena of sudden in-sight.
Archimedes' Bathtub.......2002-01-17
Excellent book by David N. Perkins who explores "breakthrough" thinking. The author reflects a "need to understand" demeanor that is profoundly the essence of real learning. Archimedes'Bathtub expresses the contemporary motivation of the intelligent person's need to understand. Don't put the book away until you really make a "connection" to what the author is saying. He is brilliant. When does one know the moment, they cross the invisible line of "affluence" to "opulence"?
...Rob Harriman, Ed.D.
Solana Beach, California USA
Clear and compelling information on breakthrough thinking.......2001-08-01
This book itself is a breakthrough. I have yet to read a book on creativity that so effectively combines real-world advice on how to achieve breakthrough thinking in such an engaging and clearly presented way. As a book which is targeted toward the business person, rather than the academic, it does an excellent job of focusing on the key points and practical applications of breakthrough thinking without getting bogged down into too much detail.
The authors start out by drawing you in with simple and compelling points on creativity and problem solving along with simple exercises to illustrate each point. They then build from there to elaborate and drive home both the techniques and the rationale behind those techniques in a way that continues to be engaging.
As with any book of this sort, 50% is stuff you already know (but may not be practicing). However, I'll bet the other 50% will really make you to think about ways to improve your personal and your company's ability to achieve breakthrough thinking.
Disappointing and annoying.......2001-06-27
If you like puzzles, you'll be intrigued to see all the puzzles in this book. But if you like puzzles you will have met them all before. Only one or two were not familiar oldies. More serious are the outright mistakes. The writer coins a buzz word, "Klondike" for his theories and that word is scattered liberally throughout the book. Every time I read it I was reminded that when he introduces it, on page 46, he informs that the Klondike is in the Yukon Territory (correct) and the Yukon is in Alaska (wrong). On page 175 he tells us that ash is a compound of charcoal and oxygen. A man who claims so many fancy degrees ought not to be making High School mistakes, and his publisher ought to have cared enough about the book to hire a competent copy editor.
What is the logic behind breakthrough discoveries?.......2001-02-20
From Archimedes' discovery of water displacement to Einstein, this poses connections between human invention and biological evolutionary processes. What is the logic behind breakthrough discoveries across scientific disciplines? Chapters examine how changes in thinking lead to revolutionary findings.

Pre-Order His Lastest, This One is Dated.......2007-07-15
I respect Michael Dowd very much, and I have for some time been following a number of authors who bring religion into play as a force for what Paul Goodman called Humanitas. I certainly do recommend this book, but more so, his forthcoming book that I link to below, along with others that I
have in my library that have impressed (I list only the religious, there is another whole list on ecological economics and natural capitalism, and another on the extremist Republican war against science (I am estranged moderate Republican)).
Thank God for Evolution!: How the Marriage of Science and Religion Will Transform Your Life and Our World
Communitas: Means of Livelihood and Ways of Life
Faith-Based Diplomacy: Trumping Realpolitik
Left Hand of God, The: Healing America's Political and Spiritual Crisis
The Lucifer Principle: A Scientific Expedition into the Forces of History
Tempting Faith: An Inside Story of Political Seduction
Good Muslim, Bad Muslim: America, the Cold War, and the Roots of Terror
Religion Gone Bad: The Hidden Dangers of the Christian Right
Piety & Politics: The Right-Wing Assault on Religious Freedom
Stand For Something: The Battle for America's Soul
Disappointing.......2003-04-01
I read this book to determine if Dowd should come share The Great Story at my church, as he is in the habit of doing around the U.S. Dowd writes with a profound mixture of poetry and prose and philosophy. He uses many great quotes from a wide dispersal of fields to support his key contentions: that we need a new cosmology to describe our relationship to God and the planet. I appreciated many of the thoughts of those quoted, and some of Dowd's thoughts on the rethinking of who we are in the cosmos: we are the consciousness of the earth, the only part of the earth capable of self-reflection.
I wish he had pursued this line of thinking more. I was excited about this book, hoping for a look deep into biological evolution, and how it can show for us the nature of God in Jesus, as He created this very process. There is very little material out there about biological evolution as it relates to Christianity, and even less on how we can use it as devotion, teaching about who God is.
But unfortunately, after a promising start Dowd begins to develop more an understanding of evolution in the general sense- a common mistake of laymen, confusing the specific process of biological evolution with the larger word "evolution", describing a change or progression. Indeed, biological evolution is specifically not positive progression, but simply change, in continuous adaptation, as Stephen Jay Gould so convincingly shows us. Dowd however runs with the idea of evolution in a more metaphorical manner, suggesting that our ideas and understanding of who God calls us to be in relation to the earth need to change, become better, and "evolve". In doing this he relies on the common interpretation of scripture as a "schoolhouse of faith"- certainly a very helpful and acceptable exegesis of the Old and New Testament, but causing great confusion when combined with the idea that we are continuously philosophically evolving. For at that point, Dowd would call us to go beyond what we find in the Bible, to something better, while still not denying the Bible (in his words), for it is still our foundation, just as the Old Testament was the foundation for the New. It becomes then a clever way of denial of the truths in the Bible.
By the end of the book, Dowd is advocating that we are all part of God, and that God is all things. He moves from Panentheism (God in all things) to Pantheism, and from ecumenicalism to universalism. All ways are equally valid ways to God, for God is in all things, and all moments and places are God- we just need to see that. Such beliefs are not Christianity. Sadly, rather than using Christian beliefs and scriptures to bring us to a new understanding of what those beliefs and scriptures say, it seems more that Dowd seeks to use the beliefs and scriptures to prove his own points, as if he knows that there is a certain segment of society that will not believe what he has to say unless he uses these instruments. And so he subtly changes the meanings of some quotes- while Paul calls us to be transformed by the renewing of our minds, Dowd calls us to *renew* our minds. While Athanasius would say "Christ became human that we might become divine.", Dowd quotes him as saying, "Christ became human that we might become God." There's a cosmos of difference in those two words. In the end Dowd seems much more comfortable with the Gospel of Thomas than with the actual Gospels, and indeed ends up quoting Thomas.
There is that to be said for this book- it gave me new insights, and provided me with a new cosmology, of thinking of myself more fully part of this planet, the thinking part, and not wholly separate. But Dowd goes too far off into netherworlds of belief and science to be all that his writing could be.
COSMOLOGY: IT BRINGS CHRIST ALIVE IN ALL BEINGS.......2002-09-20
Michael Dowd wrote this book in exceptionally clear prose with dozens of biblical quotes and hundreds of references and quotes from world class authors who teach and preach the sacred Paschal Mystery as it is present in all of nature. We're challenged not to be environmentalists, although this comes through as a likely action out of this new vision, but to be embrace Christ in all of His creation and to continue that creation in everything we touch. We are His hands and feet and continue to redeem the earth and all of nature (the whole of cosmology) in Him and through Him. The Rev. Dowd speaks from his heart and has built into this book many rich devotions and prayers as well as meditations that can literally cause a spiritual transformation in anyone so open to seeing Christ in a new light. This book is something that any post modernist or Christian naysayer could easily live with and grow from.
Our prayer group used Michael's book for three months as our main teaching source for 'cosmology and a critical new source of modern Jesus theology.' No one ever got tired of reading his inspiring words and rich concepts of this new Jesus cosmology.
Michael turns traditional Christian theology on its ear and, without once disturbing the core truths of Christianity, he gives them an essentially new set of clothes and a much more disturbing kind of challenge to live our Christianity in all parts of our life and in all we see and do in the this world of splendor, death, suffering, joy, goodness and core freedoms in Christ Jesus.
I am sorry to see that this excellent book is out of print. It deserves to have greater readership and to become a best seller.
Very good.......2000-09-29
The author elegantly weaves scripture, cosmology, and the Universe together as only a master storyteller can. This is a story sprung from the heart of humanity.
Earthspirit: A Handbook for Nurturing an Ecological..........2000-06-15
Michael Dowd has written a book that introduces one to many of the current day concepts in cosmology. He looks to the first point of humans being able to view the earth from outer space as a turning point in our view of our place in creation. He presents this information in an easy to understand format and includes many quotes to emphasize his points. The quotes are from authors in all walks of life and prompt one to think about the subject. By the end of the book, Dowd will have you seeing our natural environment in a new light and relating it to Christianity.
