Corporate Welfare Policy and the Welfare State: Bank Deregulation and the Savings and Loan Bailout (Social Institutions and Social Change) (Social Institutions and Social Change)
Davita Glasberg , and Dan Skidmore Manufacturer: Aldine Transaction ProductGroup: Book Binding: Paperback ASIN: 0202305627 |
Book Description
The 1990s have been marked by a renewed vigor in debates concerning reforming and reducing the size and scope of the United States welfare state, an approach that critics have described as attempts to dismantle the welfare state. The question of whether or not we have been witnessing an attack against the welfare state hinges on how we conceptualize welfare policy. Only when we redefine the welfare state as a conception of both social and corporate welfare can we see the expansion of the welfare state in recent decades. An examination of the savings and loan crisis and subsequent bailout reveals that the welfare state is a dynamic process: the bailout is an extension of a larger process of state projects for economic intervention that began with banking regulation following the Great Depression of the 1930s, and continued with the Chrysler bailout legislation in 1979 and the Garn-St. Germain Act of 1982, which deregulated the banking industry .
In viewing the welfare state as a power process involving shifts in relative emphases on corporate and social welfare policies and expenditures, this book provides both central case studies and a new conceptual framework for policy debates on "welfare as we know it."

The Guilt of Nations: Restitution and Negotiating Historical Injustices
Elazar Barkan Manufacturer: The Johns Hopkins University Press ProductGroup: Book Binding: Paperback Similar Items:
ASIN: 0801868076 |
Book Description
How do nations and aggrieved parties, in the wake of heinous crimes and horrible injustices, make amends in a positive way to acknowledge wrong-doings and redefine future interactions? How does the growing practice of making restitution restore a sense of morality and enhance prospects for world peace? Where has restitution worked and where has it not?
Since the end of World War II, the victims of historical injustices and crimes against humanity have increasingly turned to restitution, financial and otherwise, as a means of remedying past suffering. In The Guilt of Nations, Elazar Barkan offers a sweeping look at the idea of restitution and its impact on the concept of human rights and the practice of both national and international politics. Through in-depth explorations of reparation demands for a wide variety of past wrongs -- the Holocaust; Japanese enslavement of "comfort women" in Korea and the Philippines; the internment of Japanese Americans after Pearl Harbor; German art in Russian museums and Nazi gold in Swiss banks; the oppression of indigenous peoples in Australia, New Zealand, the U.S. mainland, and Hawaii; and the enduring legacy of slavery and institutional racism among African Americans -- Barkan confronts the difficulties in determining victims and assigning blame in the aftermath of such events, understanding what might justly be restored through restitutions, and assessing how these morally and politically charged acknowledgments of guilt can redefine national histories and identities.

An outstanding book! Exceptionally thought-provoking!.......2002-03-27
Why, for example, when a thief robs a victim, does the thief pay damages to the State rather than the person he robbed? Why does the victim of the crime often receive nothing for having been robbed (unless he receives it though the insurance he himself paid for)? Why do the fines from speeding tickets go into the general funds of the city or county in which the infraction occured, rather than go into a fund to pay for the injuries to other drivers and pedestrians who are hit by speeders? When the funds go to the city, doesn't this encourage the corruption of underposting the speed limit, speed traps and ticket quotas for traffic cops?
Who is the victim of crime, the person who was robbed, beaten up or the family members of the person who was murdered, or is the victim of crime the State? Who should receive restitution from the offender, the victim or the State? Under our present non-Biblical system, the State receives the compensation from the criminal, not the actual victim of crime. It doesn't make sense. And because of that, our society is becoming increasingly lawless over time, not law-abiding.
I most highly recommend this book to anybody who is interested in better understanding the Biblical view of one of the major social issues of our time. Regardless of whether or not you are a Christian, this book will have you thinking and reflecting deeply on the issues it brings up.

The Law and Ethics of Restitution
Hanoch Dagan Manufacturer: Cambridge University Press ProductGroup: Book Binding: Hardcover ASIN: 0521829046 |
Book Description
Dagan's book provides a dynamic and much needed account of the American law of restitution. The book reviews the existing doctrine, including the forthcoming (third) Restatement, using an ethical perspective to expose and examine critically the normative underpinnings of the core categories of restitution. Dagan also discusses some of the most controversial issues in the area, such as cohabitation, improper tax payments, and the role of constructive trusts as trumps in bankruptcy. He further tackles the recent restitution claims of slave laborers (or their descendants) against corporations that benefited from their enslavements, and of governmental bodies against injurious industries. Dagan argues that the concept of unjust enrichment is not an independent reason for restitution but, rather, serves as a loose framework, structuring the contextual application of commitments to autonomy, utility, and community in situations where either the cause of action or the measure of recovery is benefit-based. By integrating doctrinal and ethical analyses of restitution across the spectrum of restitution contexts, the author offers significant and provocative insights on existing law as well as possible reforms.

Ionospheric Precursors of Earthquakes
Sergey Pulinets , and Kirill Boyarchuk Manufacturer: Springer ProductGroup: Book Binding: Hardcover ASIN: 3540208399 |
Book Description
The book aims to explain the variations of near-Earth plasma observed over seismically active areas several days/hours before strong seismic shocks. It demonstrates how seismo-ionospheric coupling is part of the global electric circuit and shows that the anomalous electric field appearing in active seismic areas is the main carrier of information from the earth into the ionosphere. The discussion of physical mechanisms is based on experimental data. The results can be regarded as the basis for future applications such as short-term earthquake prediction. It proceeds to describe existing complex systems of space-born and ground-based monitoring for electromagnetic and ionospheric precursors of earthquakes, as well as those still under construction. It is an excellent text for courses and contains a wealth of information for those scientists working in the field of natural disaster reduction.

Something practical.......2004-09-24
Real science, real simple.......2004-07-18
There are four chapters -- the first chapter looks at relativity, discussing the speed of light, frames of reference, and the idea of warped space-time around massive objects. The second chapter, quantum mechanics, presents the idea of the photoelectric effect, the idea the energy behaves in wavelike and particle manner, and that there are few 'real life' experiments that can adequately explain quantum effects. The third chapter looks the conservation of mass and energy, the famous Einstein equation of E = mc(squared). The fourth chapter presents one more misunderstood physics idea, the Heisenberg Uncertainty Principle, one of the important concepts in quantum physics, that basically sets the stage for much of the 'bizarre' aspects of modern physics, including the concept of limits to our knowledge and measurement ability.
Fleisher presents several short appendices -- a two-page timeline starting in 1675 with Olaus Romer's discovery that the speed of light is finite to the late 1900s with nuclear events. There are eight pages of one-paragraph biographies of major physicists of the past few hundred years. There are selected readings and bibliography, as well as a useful glossary.
Not just for kids, the book and the others in the series of 'Secrets of the Universe' present science ideas in small, easily comprehended pieces for any non-scientifically-literate reader.
