    Book Description

When it first published in spring 1998, Derivatives: The Wild Beast of Finance made bold predictions and recommendations for the future of global finance. Alfred Steinherr explained that, without effective risk management, the incredible explosion in the use and value of derivatives could destabilise the entire global market structure. His views and suggested solutions were not universally accepted. And then, suddenly, in the space of a few months many of the inherent dangers he set out became reality - the Asian crisis took a vicious toll on the tiger economies and the Russian bear collapsed, heralding the ultimate destruction of the most celebrated hedge fund of recent years - Long-Term Capital Management. The knock-on effect of the LTCM collapse was so severe that the US Fed was forced to intervene. In this extensively revised paperback edition, Alfred Steinherr brings the story up to date and uses the opportunity to analyse and reflect on the effectiveness of the solutions he offered first time around. Much of the more technical material from the original edition has been removed to produce a highly readable and thought-provoking explanation of the origins and benefits of global finance, while once again assessing the dangers - imagined and real - that still lurk within this fascinating world. Time alone will tell how much heed is taken this time. "Alfred Steinherr has written a fascinating book that examines the role derivatives play in developing the world economy today, and the part they will have in shaping the financial markets of tomorrow.. For practitioners, officials and students alike, Steinherr has provided a lively and informative canter through the world of derivatives." Investors Digest ". a welcome departure from most texts on the topic. Books on derivatives seem either to be ludicrously sensationalist or steeped in higher level mathematics. In contrast, this work by Alfred Steinherr is both accessible and rigorous." Investment Adviser ". will give a useful insight into the relationship between the derivatives market and the wider financial markets to the general reader.. a highly informative read for those who really want to get to grips with what the derivatives markets are all about." The Investor "Steinherr brings a lucid approach to a complex topic with this book [and] has produced a comprehensive overview which manages to combine a readable style with considerable detail and thought-provoking ideas for the future." European Fund Manager

            Book Description

The book is divided into three parts: theory, method and implementation. Starting with a summary of the state-of-the-art in mobile technologies, the first part analyses their impacts on cartography and pinpoints the missing theories concerned with the development of map-based mobile services. A conceptual framework of mobile cartography is then introduced with the emphasis on mobile usage context. The second part is devoted to the design methodology under the constraints defined in the theoretical framework. A core issue deals with personalised mobile map services. The final part demonstrates the feasibility of the methods by using application scenarios. The accompanying CD-ROM contains the PDF-Files in colour.

This is a great book to read on airplanes, or at leisure. Each short work is fascinating, and I felt both marvelled at Feynman, and at the process of discovery.

It is a very human book, and combines very well the soft, sparky, almost childish side of a person, and the deep, analytical, thought provoking, more adult part.

I also made me think about the atomic bomb, since I was born in the 60s, I was too young to remember that frenzie.

The book is also great to get stories and quotes for training and conversation.

The book is not an arid description about a methodology for discovering things, or a novel.

            5 out of 5 stars Further Feynman.......2003-12-31

Yet another glimpse inside the mind of one of the most brilliant and most peculiar physicists of recent times, this book is perfect for those who enjoy physics or even just a good story. If you enjoyed the other semi-scientific Feynman books, you will not be disappointed by this one.

            5 out of 5 stars A very different book........2003-08-27

In this series of lectures and interviews, Feynman lays out his, sometimes surprisingly philosophical given his aversion to such things, outlook on science, religion, and life in general. As an added bonus, you get a lecture or two on his "absurd and crazy" ideas, like nanotechnology, that give you a real feel what Feynman was about.

This book held a lot of credibility with me. First, Feynman was a singular individual, unswayed by pomposity and false pretenses, with no hidden agenda, and little desire to have other people like him - a rare thing. Second, the book is poorly written. The editors, on purpose, left it raw and unrefined, just as Feynman spoke it, to let more of Feynman come across. The result is uneven, jarring, and a little hard to read, and this, to me, is a good thing. Whenever I see fresh, sparkling, vibrant prose I don't believe it, because show me a more effective speaker than Hitler or a more electrifying call to action than the "Communist Manifesto". Without the swaying torrent of rhetoric, the message of the book stands on its own merrit.

Read this book. You'll walk away from it a little wiser.

5 out of 5 stars GREAT COLLECTION OFFERS INSIGHT INTO MAN OF SCIENCE.......2003-07-15

This book is a collection of Feynman's most memorable essays and speeches, in which he talks about the Manhattan project, his childhood, the future of physics, the unscientific nature of society, among other topics. This is a book for the non scientist, as there is very little physics required, and it talks as much about the future of science as it does about the future of society.

Feynman is a remarkable character, which many virtues and flaws which are readily detectable in the book. It is a short, quick read that left me wanting to learn more about him.

              Book Description

Albrecht Dihle presents the most up-to-date history of Greek literature from its Homeric origins to the age of Augustus. Greek literary production throughout this period is embedded in its historical and social context. Dihle sees this literature as an historical phenomenon, a particular mode of linguistic communication, with its specific forms developing both in an organic way and in response to the changing world around. In this it differs from conventional humanist approaches to Greek and Latin literature which analyze the works as objects of timeless value independent of any historical setting or purpose.

This magisterial survey by one of the leading European authorities on classical literature will establish itself, as it already has in Germany, as the standard account of the subject.

4 out of 5 stars An interesting book about Russian emigres.......2000-05-18

This book is about "the Russian dustmen of Cannes", the Russians who fled during and after the Russian revolutions in 1918-1919 and tried to carve out a new life for themselves and their families in the West. The book is made up of 61 chapters, each by a different emigre. Mostly they are extracts from interviews by the book's authors with the emigres; a few are from written sources. A few of the emigres are whiners (the Bolsheviks "took all our lovely horses", one Countess complains) but most have interesting things to say. For royalty watchers, there is the account of Dowager Empress Maria Fyodorovna's lady-in-waiting of their captivity in the Crimea, and tales of Grand Duchess Ksenia in exile. There are tales of pogroms under imperial Russia, life during the revolution, escape from Russia in multitudes of ways, life in exile, life under the Soviet regime... The book's format makes it easy to skip around, and boring or annoying accounts are easily skipped over. The accounts seem to be weighted in favor of members of the nobility and bourgeoisie. A good book for anyone who is interested in how they lived during the revolution and after.

For many years Richard Hoagland alone hypothesized that sentient beings spent time on Mars millions of years ago assembling behemoth structures whose ruins are still seen today. Here Hoagland redefines the solar system as a different place than NASA has presented. The book includes a new preface covering the Mars Global Surveyor photos and reactions of NASA.

Read this book with a very healthy level of skeptisim!

The claims put forth in this work has been debunked by many high level science experts, such as Phil Plait ( Author of Bad Astronomy ) and Seth Shostak ( SETI Institute) - among others.

But don't take my word for it. Go do the research yourself!

Funny thing, the internet. You start out going one place and end up somewhere else altogether. While looking for information about Jack Parsons (founder of Jet Propulsion Laboratories) I eventually, somehow, ended up here at The Monuments of Mars. That's okay. I happen to have a copy of Monuments (4th edition) so I decided I might as well post a review. Then I read about half of the 70-something reviews already posted and wondered what else was there to be said?

Clearly, Hoagland's massive work engenders its own weight in controversy. But, having followed Hoagland's work for many years, I'm inclined to think perhaps that is one of Hoagland's greatest contributions and perhaps one of the most valuable aspects of what he does.

Hoagland's motto (a rephrased version of the Star Trek motto) is "To boldly go where someone has gone before." Obviously that's a reference to his whole underlying assumption that some intelligent species had been on Mars and on our Moon centuries ago. But I'm inclined to think perhaps the original Star Trek motto more accurately fits Hoagland himself: "To boldly go where no one has gone before." (Yes, I know, I know. That's not the ORIGINAL original. It's the "other" original.) Hoagland has consistently proposed ideas that were/are pretty far out. But he also provides the data to back up his ideas. True, not everyone supports his claims or the data he uses to back up those claims but, man, he sure does make you think. And not just think in conventional terms but think outside the box. After all, isn't that where some of the greatest discoveries are made? Einstein anyone? The Wright Brothers? Tesla? Who am I missing?

The Face on Mars. The pyramids on Mars. The strange objects on the Moon. Are these all really artificial constructions created by alien beings from another planet? Another dimension? I don't know. But having read Monuments and after listening to Hoagland's arguments I can say I'm open to the possibility that he may be right.

And let us not overlook the fact that Hoagland isn't just some "nobody" who somehow sneaked his way into the limelight. Back in the 1960s he was the NBC consultant for the moon landing of Surveyor 1. A couple years later he became the director of a major science museum and planetarium in Connecticut. Then he became a science advisor to Walter Cronkite during the Apollo missions. I could go on but I think the point is made.

I would recommend The Monuments of Mars if for no other reason than to give your critical thinking skills a workout and decide for yourself whether or not someone has gone there before. Are Hoagland's ideas far out? Yes. But... isn't that where we want to go?

                      5 out of 5 stars absolutly amazing.......2007-09-22

I only recently learned of Richard C. Hoagland when I stumbled upon his website. I was intrigued by some of the things written on there so I decided to buy this book.

At first I was cautious at believing what he had to say, but everything he says is very-well documented and not only that, it is backed by many different scientists from many different fields.
While he is very eager to claim life on Mars, he does indeed back all of his claims with evidence(all backed by legitmate scientists) and outright says when he is speculating.

Those that say this is psuedo-science, obviously do not beleive in any of this to begin with, meaning they could not possibly give a fair review. In other words, they had probably made up their mind before reading the book. Also, the argument that you can not go by fuzzy pictures, does not work, as updated pictures from the more recent Mars mission continues to prove him right.

One thing I did not like was the fact that there were not more recent pictures and more pictures overall.

Overall this was a very good book and if you are open minded you should find this book very persuading, otherwise don't bother reading it.

                      1 out of 5 stars Tabloid Science.......2007-04-13

This book was a disappointment. I have never dreaded reading such a large book as this one. Not that I don't agree that there appears to be Martian Architecture on Mars or I wouldn't have spent so much $ or time on this rediculous book. Hoagland writes a 700 page tabloid book on Mars. Incredible! Too much "old" Hoagland history and too many disjointed pictures/images. He spends way too much time on the rediculous "face". One photo or the first Viking photo makes it look like a face and THAT IS IT. Period!!!! He must have at least fifty pages just on the face alone! Reading this book was more like experiencing a freak show at the county fair. I recommend that you not waste your time on this book. The guy is definitely correct that there appears to be "life on Mars" but take my word for it, you'd be better off buying a science fiction book.....it would be more convincing. I haven't read it but a better book would be The Martian Enigmas: A Closer Look: The Face, Pyramids, and Other Unusual Objects on Mars Second Edition by Mark J. Carlotto and it is not so long......Scotty beam this guy up to the Enterprise and KEEP HIM THERE! I want my money back!

5 out of 5 stars Good Explanation of One Point of View.......2007-02-28

Mr. Hoadland certainly has better eyes than I do. I look at the pictures he has included in this book and read his descriptions and just don't see what he sees. Yes, I see some vague resemblence to a face in the original pictures taken by the Viking orbiter in 1976. Then I look at the newer pictures taken at higher resolution and different lighting and if I wasn't deliberately looking for a face I'd just see some mountains.

Now once you have a fact, then it isn't a big step to go find other thing with which we humans can identify, e.g. a city, a fortress, a pyramid. It's not unlike laying on the grass in the summer time with a pretty girl and seeing figures in the clouds. (I don't know why the girl has to be pretty, but it fits with the story.)

He also discusses the meteorites from Mars, but in much less detail. Presumably this was just coming to light as this book was going to press and will be treated more completely in the next edition.

Mr. Hoagland is clearly out on the edge of what scientists are believing about Mars. There is some evidence that yes there is or may have been some kind of life on mars. But there is also some evidence that contradicts the other findings. The majority of scientists do not believe that conclusive evidence has been found.

If you've already got your mind made up that the 'Face On Mars' is absolutely 100 percent natural and NOT man-made, then what are you doing reading this book? This book is primarily for those SEEKING answers, NOT for those who have their minds made up already. Maybe Hoagland's ideas are completely wrong, but then again, they may be right, or maybe somewhere in between.

One question I've never seen addressed: Why doesn't NASA release their Mars photos IMMEDIATELY when they get them? Why are the photos always delayed 48 or 72 hours? Does NASA feel they need to be screened for pornography or something? If there is truly nothing but rocks up there, I can find absolutely no reason for any delay. They might say they need to be 'cleaned up' or the images made clearer. Fine. That can be done later. But it would make folks like me feel a bit less like they were hiding something if they'd release photos the moment they got them. There's no good reason not to. Just put a caption that says something like "Raw untouched image" on it. We're smart enough to figure it out.

                                  Book Description

"This is the most complete reference available on Texas earthquakes.... Its general information on earthquakes, presented in a humorous and understandable manner, will even make the text attractive to non-Texans who want to know more about earthquakes."

—Diane I. Doser, Professor of Geology, University of Texas at El Paso

When nature goes haywire in Texas, it isn't usually an earthshaking event. Though droughts, floods, tornadoes, and hail all keep Texans talking about the unpredictable weather, when it comes to earthquakes, most of us think we're on terra firma in this state. But we're wrong! Nearly every year, earthquakes large enough to be felt by the public occur somewhere in Texas.

This entertaining, yet authoritative book covers "all you really need to know" about earthquakes in general and in Texas specifically. The authors explain how earthquakes are caused by natural forces or human activities, how they're measured, how they can be predicted, and how citizens and governments should prepare for them. They also thoroughly discuss earthquakes in Texas, looking at the occurrences and assessing the risks region by region and comparing the amount of seismic activity in Texas to other parts of the country and the world. The book concludes with a compendium of over one hundred recorded earthquakes in Texas from 1811 to 2000 that briefly describes the location, timing, and effects of each event.
